After the death of her father, the heir to the throne, Lilian Coleman must accompany her cousin to the Crown Palace, where he is to take her father's place as heir. However, Lilian does not find lavishness and breathtaking balls as she had imagined. She finds a mysterious darkness, secrets her father left behind for her in his diary, and a curse he had been trying to break.

Henry Freyr was never a hero, and he never wanted to be one. Stuck as a bandit to keep a roof over his and his friends' heads, Henry has resigned himself as the villain. But when he and his friends happen upon a dead nobleman with a strange medallion in his pocket telling of a cursed land called Peveren, Henry finds himself pulled into a dark mystery.

As more and more nobles are found murdered, all with something to do with the curse, Lilian’s and Henry's paths collide. Unless they break the curse in time, Peveren will vanish forever. However, Henry does not wish to work with a spoiled princess, and Lilian does not want to join a criminal, either. But as the Great Clock ticks on and more people fall, Lilian and Henry know that they must come together to save Peveren and break the curse—the curse that might just be their end.

This was my first foray into any type of historical fiction, but the fact that it was historical fantasy greatly intrigued me.

And I'm so glad I read it! This was so great!

Not only is the story and plot unique, but Henry and Lilian's banter was pure gold!

There were a few spots that went really fast toward the end that I think could've been fleshed out a bit more, but overall this was a strong, beautifully written debut, and I absolutely can't wait to read the next book!

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Where Iron Meets Flame is one of my most anticipated books of 2022! I had the honor of alpha and beta reading it, and cannot express my love for it enough!

The characters feel like family and Peveren feels like home. (Yes… even the sketchy parts. Because anywhere I go with the bandits is home enough for me!)

If you enjoy mystery, found family, magic & curses, and a bit of romance, then WIMF is the book for you! I cannot wait to hold a hard copy and read it yet again!

And as always, at the end of my reviews… CAN WE JUST ADMIRE THE COVER?! It fits the books aesthetic, and symbolism PERFECTLY.

Where Iron Meets Flame by Louise Everett
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Welcome to the home of wayward idiots and king haters.”

Why I put this book off for so long I will never know, IT WAS SO GOOD!! Louise Everett is an indie author which was what originally caught my eye, and what a talented one at that! I knew as soon as the cover was revealed that it would be spectacular. Speaking of the cover, it is absolutely PERFECT for the book!! Which is not always a success, but I am not sure a cover has ever fit a book better than this one does.

Lilian Coleman is the crown princess and after two deaths, the heir to the throne.

Henry Feyre is no hero, and he never wanted to be.

And James is…James is James and we love him for it. 😂 The dynamic between him and Henry reminded me SO much of my own characters Tyler and Jake. They are everything I hope my own characters to be and more! James is reckless and impulsive, and Henry is cool, calculating, and broody. LOVE!

One of the things I really liked about this book was the Duel POV between Lily and Henry. I absolutely relish seeing their different feelings and voices about their lives and each other. All of Louise’s characters were in depth, well thought out, and well written. Henry is obviously my favorite thought hehe. I just adore him.

I especially related to this quote: “I don’t want love. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want it for other people. I find it a waste of time.”

And I hope, that the following quote becomes true for me as well.

“I once told you that I thought love was a waste of time and that I did not want it for myself. But I do now.“

This book was incredibly well written from the plot, to the characters, to the scenes themselves. My favorite scene is when Lilian blows the whistle for the first time. The whistles should be acknowledged as their own characters because that was so original and clever!! …Okay let’s be honest, I loved every scene between Lilian and Henry. The banter was gold!

This book is everything I desire in a book. Its historical fiction with dark fall vibes, enemies to lovers and found family tropes, indie gem, and way more!

Also, Louise if you are reading this, you are the one that introduced me to Stalking Jack the Ripper (it is now one of my favorite books!) I squealed when you used ‘Wadsworth’ like a little girl on Christmas lol. Especially when you gave the eponym to Henry and his sister!! “Lord Idiot” had me dying. 🤣

There is so much I want to say about this book, and I will probably reread and edit this review after the rerelease on June 12th so I don’t accidently say things on stuff you have edited or removed. But Louise, this is a beautiful and stunning debut!! It's one of my favorite books now. Thank you for writing it!

I will always consider the cabin and the bandits my second home and wish to go back as soon as possible.

Pugnamus usque in finem, bandits, Pugnamus usque in finem!

Louise, if you're reading this, please consider this to be my formal petition to get more of James in book two. He was easily my absolute favourite character and I wish he had had more page time!

This book was exactly what I needed at this point in the year: it had the autumn vibes, a delightful and lovable cast of characters, royalty, romance, and a whirlwind pace. It was all around a good time. I loved the setting from page one and was immediately gripped by the plot. Lilian was probably one of my less-favourite characters of the main rag-tag group, mainly because she felt entitled and exceedingly proud for the first half of the story (thankfully that changes in the second half!). I was also so impressed by the way Louise was able to handle so many characters and give them all distinguishing features without making them feel flat (it makes sense why James had such little page time). That said, I felt like I needed more of some of the relationship dynamics so that I could understand their significance or history. Caroline and Henry were described as best friends, but I had a hard time seeing that for a majority of the book because there were so few interactions between them. I also felt like I needed more content/page time with the bandits actually doing their jobs. I we rarely saw them doing their work (and yes, I understand that they weren't the central focus of the story, but I think it would've enhanced the storyline).

Some of the wording or phrasing throughout the book felt kind of awkward, stilted, or repetitive as I was reading, which felt a little bit uncomfortable. Some of the dates on the chapter subtitles also didn't match up with the storyline, but I wasn't terribly bothered by that as I could pretty easily grasp the timeline from the context of the chapter.

The other thing I noticed was how easily I could identify what Louise's favourite books were from reading her work. There were definitely scenes that were very reminiscent of Six of Crows or Stalking Jack the Ripper. Henry and Lilian's interactions reminded me a LOT of the dynamic that exists between Will and Tessa in The Infernal Devices (Henry was practically Louise's version of Will). I'm not saying that Louise copied the dialogue, scenes, or characters, because they are clearly all original. I'm just saying that there was an uncanny influence between.

Overall, I am genuinely so impressed by this book (especially considering that Louise is so young) and I am very excited for the rest of the series (please more James!). 4.5/5 stars!

Where Iron Meets Flame…one of my most favorite books to this day!
I won’t say too much, as the book isn’t out yet and I don’t want to give anything away, but this book is so worth it!! Louise worked incredibly hard on WIMF, and it shows through her dynamic characters, gothic london-inspired setting that fits the vibes of the book so well, and the mysteries we unravel as we learn more and more about this world.
These characters are so incredibly well written. I LOVE the main character, the love interest, the found family friendships. This book had me fully invested from start to finish, and I can’t wait to know even more about this world and these books Louise has created.

this book is a work of ART

I loved Henry and Lilly's dynamics, and the vibe of the book was amazing. I read it in one night, and I would read it again and again and again and never be bored.
The characters were really interesting, and the storyline was intriguing.
I also really loved the relationships between all of the characters.

I love these characters and the tension throughout the story. All the tropes and vibes scenes were *chef's kiss*. I cannot wait for the rest of the series so I can continue the journey with all these amazing characters. The only thing about this book is I as a reader didn't feel the stakes in the story. I understood the stakes, but I didn't really feel the severity of them.

love it love it love itttttt!!

Gonna be honest, I bought this book for the romance (why am I like this 😭) and it did not disappoint. Pretty sure the ship is no secret but I’ll not specify names (except Pest) 😆 Slow-burn, kind of rivals-to-lovers with those “noooo I’m definitely not falling in love with her/him” moments 😃 And they constantly jokingly insult each other? We love 😌 (k yes it isn’t always jokingly but it’s fine)

BUT despite having gotten the book for the romance, I was hooked before the ship even met, because of the all very very intriguing mystery and magic bits. I say “bits” like it’s not literally the plot - but anyway. The plot is SUPERB. All the mystery elements falling into place - well, not all, but that just makes me more excited for the second book.

The dual POV is excellent. I love both POV characters, and you can almost always tell whose POV it is - I think there was just one small spot where it seemed to head hop and it was a tiny bit confusing in that single place. ALSO the side characters are so well fleshed out. I feel like it’s usually hard to pull off that many SCs, but Louise Everett did it and she did it well. All the side characters feel very real and I adore them, Ferran and Hamish in particular. Also poor Callum tries so hard but I’m lowkey worried he’ll turn out to be evil - idk though.

It’s pretty clean overall. There is violence but it’s not super graphic. There are magic elements, if anyone cares about that. There is I think one curse word used several times, but not like a ton. The romance is clean (assuming you’re not concerned about kissing) though I think there are some very vague allusions to…stuff. Very light though.

In summary: FANTASTIC BOOK OMW
Highly recommend it if you like - uhh how to describe - historical-ish fantasy mystery romance with found family and stellar MCs

I found this book on Instagram, when it was still being written. Got excited with a little description of it and started following this extraordinary writer’s journey.
Where iron meets flame does starts with something that reminds me of the red queen, but don’t fear, it’s a unique story with lots of love, drama and mystery. It does have little marks that you don’t notice will be important but later on are HUGE. The whole story is well thought and written beautifully. It goes too quick sometimes and some scenes are too short, like the “training” ones, not that I’m saying to dedicate a whole chapter to them, just seems a bit unrealistic. Lilian does 3 small things in each training and then stops, so it would make more sense to put time jumps or something to do make the reader feel like there’s exhaustion and effort put into those “training sessions”. Don’t really know how to describe it I’m no expert critic. There’s also little scenes that are forgotten throughout the story like the “garden date”, nothing relevant but it just disappears and it’s never mentioned again. Also there’s a lot of characters, it messes with my head, I love the bandits but I’m lost in how many they are.
Other than this I’m so really happy to have read this book, (excuse my grammar, English is not my mother language) the bandits and Lilian’s family made me smile a lot, I really felt like I was inside the story. It’s worth the read, and the romance inside it made me smile A LOT. GIVE ME MORE SAM PLEASE, WHAT HAPPENED TO HIMMM. It would be so cool doing a map of the places in the story. Thank you Louise for this amazing story, I’ll be waiting for the next part and commenting on insta in this next journey :)
Happy read anyone that’s interested in this piece of art.

Where Iron Meets Flame is a classic YA historical fantasy, and the author captured all of the key things a reader would look for. You have a strong willed heroine who’s learning to take control of her life, a sweet and sarcastic love interest whose “not fit for a princess”, a found family that would do anything for each other, mystery, adventure, and a dash of romance. This first book felt heavily focused on Lilian and Henry, and while I totally get why, I can’t wait to get to know the rest of the bandits better in book 2! The setting reminded me a lot of The Infernal Devices, and Henry has total Will Herondale vibes (which we can never never enough of, right?). Overall, this was a great debut and I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the series!

WHERE IRON MEETS FLAME 🔥

Louise’s debut was a YA lovers dream. It was easy to read, enchanting, and witty! The relationship between Henry and Lilian was fueling all of the love in my heart that I have for Will Herondale and Tessa Gray. I absolutely loved that Louise mentions Cassandra Clare in the acknowledgments as one of her greatest inspirations, because I could definitely see that development throughout the story. 🥹 I cherished the found family relationship between Henry and his fellow band of bandits. I am really looking forward to more James content in the second book! (Yes, I would like her now please and thanks. 🙃🤌)

I would have really liked a map for this one— I found it a little hard at times to keep the world straight in my head because it is so fantastical, and I can tell the rest of the series is really going to dive into all it has to offer!

I absolutely recommend this to anyone who loves the Infernal Devices, and loves those vibes. Henry is SO cute and I can’t wait for more from Louise! 🤍

Where Iron Meets Flame
The Peveren Series #1
Historical Fantasy, YA
Louise Everett
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Unfortunately I had to DNF this one because it just wasn't for me but I can see how others might like it.

The pacing was quite slow and I found the plot the same. Even by 31% there wasn't any magic used or shown so I had a hard time staying engaged and interested.

This book had dual POVs but I found it a little tricky sometimes because there's no clear indication of when they change or who they are until another character says their name etc.

There were a few info dumps so I found myself skipping parts here and there. The vague hints about the mysterious land and what Lilian would soon face became a bit annoying rather than intriguing.

I did like the writing style and the banter between Lilian and Henry though.

The blurb heightened my expectations and I was not let down! WIMF is a solid debut filled with action, adventure, wit and a well-written slow burn romance. The characters felt realistic and fleshed out. I really enjoyed the banter between the bandits, and also between Lilian and Henry. It was so refreshing to read a healthy romance as well. Overall, I really enjoyed this one and I’m looking forward to the sequel!
