Funk started her career in education with middle schoolers, moved to high school, and ended up in college. She now teaches history and criminal justice at a local community college. Coming from a long line of ancestors who love all things pertaining to reading, writing, and learning, it was only natural for her to tackle the task of completing a novel. As an avid reader who especially enjoys the history of crime, she weaves interesting facts among her characters and locations. Mental health issues can be part of the psyche of a serial killer. In Silent Rage Russell’s character is developed by the difficulties he encountered in his troubled youth. We all wonder why someone chooses to do evil. Were they born that way or made that way by the environment surrounding them? Perhaps it is a combination of the two. However, just because things are tough at home doesn’t mean that person is doomed to a life of crime. Many of the youth of today are not taught how to handle the pressures handed to them by society. Silent Rage tackles the nature vs nurture question. While DE Funk enjoys writing and takes inspiration from the immortal words of Winston Churchill and “never gives-up,” she hopes to entertain with her books and inspire readers to consider helping a troubled kid. Her debut novel, Silent Rage, was awarded Best Suspense at the 2019 Killer Nashville International Writer’s Conference.
I enjoyed this book because it had so many ins, and outs. You won't be able to put it down until the mystery is solved. These characters are well written and fleshed out. You wind up caring for some, and being disgusted by many others. On occasion, the story drags a bit, but continues to surprise.
Book club read. The story really has promise to be good, however there are so many typos it can be hard to see past. The book is supposed *keyword* be about Russell as a 13 year old but the story bounces between so many characters that we don’t need to know about. I wish it was written differently.
I’ve always been interested in the psyche of monsters. Is there something missing in them? Or did life make them that way? With Russel it’s a little of both. I can’t wait to delve deeper into his story.
I was hooked starting on page one, the story moved from mile stone to mile stone. The child never had a chance. The characters came alive, and their circumstances beyond my control. I would continue to read more from this author.
Russell is a troubled young boy. He is the son of an exotic dancer and a man who was executed for multiple murders. He often hides underneath the family trailer and spies on people as he studies knives and practices covert operations.
Loretta is Russell‘s young mother. She is a drug addict who often sells her body and neglects her son in order to buy drugs. At one point, she has her arm broken by enforcers as punishment for buying drugs from an alternate dealer.
Wayne is Loretta’s live-in boyfriend. He often beats Russell and forces Russell to perform sexual acts.
Libby is Russell’s dedicated teacher. She is concerned for her student and worries about his home environment. Libby is the one person who has compassion for Russell and Russell often wonders what it would be like if she were his mother.
Mike is Libby‘s fiancé. He is a detective who investigates drug crimes.
Russell‘s anger gradually burns into rage as he deals with abuse, neglect, and bullying. What will happen if he does not get help?
This story is a well-written saga of a boy who has nothing to lose. The author, winner of the Silver Falchion Award for best suspense novel, is a college professor who teaches criminology. She does a great job telling the story of a boy without hope in a system that has a lot of cracks. Read this if you love to read crime stories and you want to examine why serial killers act the way they do.
