Danny Davies is proud to work at ‘Winscombe Funeral Home, Crematorium and Cemetery.’ His job is not exactly run-of-the-mill yet in a curious way, Danny enjoys treating the dead with care and respect. Mr Winscombe, his employer, is meticulous in his work; a very private, much esteemed member of the community of Lychgate and somebody Danny looks up to.

When Mr Winscombe mysteriously disappears one afternoon, Danny is naturally concerned. After all, the man is usually such a stickler for routine. He goes to the police later that evening when there is still neither sight nor sound of his boss.

As a courtesy, the police despatch two officers to Mr Winscombe’s home. Little does Danny know that the town of Lychgate will be forever changed afterwards. As will his opinion of his boss.

Some things are meant to be buried.

What Did I Just Walk Into?
Danny Davies works at a funeral home. Quiet, respectful, slightly spooky? Sure. But he likes it. At least, until his boss disappears and the entire quaint little town of Lychgate goes from creepy quaint to grab-your-bug-out-bag real fast.

This book starts with a missing mortician and ends with... well, no spoilers, but let’s just say the dead stop staying put. And it is not a clerical error.

Here’s What Slapped:
The tone is pure gold: a mix of dark humor, quiet horror, and full-blown zompoc chaos.

Danny is such a reluctant hero, you almost want to shake him until you realize you’d rather keep him alive.

The pacing lures you in like it’s going to be a cozy little mystery and then BAM! Corpses, consequences, and oh look, the end of the world.

The cast? Loveable. Doomed. Occasionally unhinged. Perfect.

One scene had me rethinking every funeral home I’ve ever passed. Thanks for that.

What Bit Back:
Would it have killed someone to run a background check on Mr. Winscombe? Just saying.
Also: RIP to any emotional attachment you may develop for the supporting characters. You won't see it coming, and it will hurt.

Perfect for Readers Who Love:
📖 Quietly spiraling zombie apocalypses
📖 Small-town horror with a corpse problem
📖 Characters who should not be trusted with end-of-the-world decisions, but somehow carry the story
📖 Dark humor and slow-burn dread with a bite (literally)
📖 Books that trick you into thinking, “Oh, this might just be a quirky little thriller,” and then absolutely wreck your evening

This was a perfect blend of horror and “oh no” energy. The kind of book you pick up thinking it’ll be a mild ride... and then suddenly you’re emotionally compromised and dodging the undead. I’m ready for a sequel or at least a support group.

Something wicked this way comes!!

What is happening in the little village of Lynchgate? For Danny, finishing up at his job at Winscombe Funeral Home, life as he knows it is about to change…forever.
Little does he know that his employer has gone down a very horrifying slope, one that will prove to be the undoing of everything he holds dear.
Hang on for the ride of Danny’s life as we are propelled helplessly along for the show!

This is a really engaging book. I thought the storyline was something different and had great characters from the village of Lynchgate. A funeral home is where the terrifying events begin and right to the end,we are caught up in all the horrors.I can really recommend you give this ago. You won't be disappointed.

I really enjoyed this book. Very reminiscent of early James Herbert. The author strikes exactly the right balance to make this story believable. If you love a good zombie rompof a book, this is the one for you.
