Even though I've never read books in the previous series with main character Nora, I dove right in. Glad I did. This book has a great plot, great back and forth between characters, and a satisfying ending. The writing is excellent, too. I'm looking forward to reading more books from this author!

I picked this since I am a diver and have enjoyed the Cayman Islands. Often, dive stories have enough inaccuracies that my divemaster brother in law and I compare notes on what we find in a novel. Glad to say this one has none I could spot.

Geography, however is another issue. The author badly mangles the descriptions of the Manatee River and its issues. I gather he lived in St. Petersburg for awhile so the river is nearby to there and to where I live. I'm all for artistic license but the river's sites, flows and discharges does not match reality, nor are there any existing or threatened paper mills along it and it is fairly concentrated in direction and flow, not broadly dispersed (except possibly further to the source).

That aside, the story is interesting but very contrived. Hard to imagine anyone taking the steps the villain did in this tale. Frankly, too clever by half. And if he is as good at digging up information Nora Sommer, he would not have made the fundamental mistake in selecting his target.

I'll skip any spoilers. Giving it 4 stars for creativity, solid writing and a story which moves along. The second in the series is waiting to be fired up on my kindle.

Uhm… sir, I need my jaw back off the floor please. I haven’t enjoyed a book like this in so long. Nora is an amazing character to follow. I wish I’d known about the novella prequel, I’d still be here. Very excited to read book two.

Crime, the thrill of the chase, and a gripping mystery all wrapped into one book. There were so many moving pieces in this story that kept me captivated, more than just that of the usual ‘crime novel’. Sure, there’s the classic ‘bad guy’ and ‘good guy’ but not everything is quite so black and white. When we’re introduced into this life of Nora Sommer, we’re not sure what we’ve gotten into, but then the plot thickens as we discover more about the circumstances surrounding her first case. Even as she’s gone through her own trials before this, when Nora’s thrown into this crazy situation I really love seeing how she perseveres and fights to do what’s right. The pace was moderate, not too fast or too slow but really well-paced. Though I’ve never been the Cayman Islands, I liked how I was able to imagine the scenery clearly and felt as if I were in the story with the other characters.

This book is a fantastic start to a new series. It is exciting, fast paced and simply unputdownable. I was sucked into the story straight away and just had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I was blown away by how easily is connect with his work.
I really enjoyed the characters. Not just the main characters but a lot of the supporting characters too, which doesn’t often happen to me. I really did just enjoy this whole book from start to finish and I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2.

Great new series from N

Nick has brought a favorite character from the AJ Bailey universe to her own starring role. Was also nice to get a deeper insight to Whittaker as well. Good fast moving plot line with a great finale. Can’t wait to til the next one!

Nora has just started a new job with the Royal Cayman Police thinking the job will be relaxed and different pace to life, but when Nora and her partner are thrown into a kidnapping thing start to get interesting.

While Nora starts investigating, she is drawn into the kidnapper’s sick plan and she become a porn in the crime, having to race against time to try and solve four challenges set by the bad guy, the only thing is if she fails any then the kidnap victim will have things done to her, so Nora must try and solve the clues and the challenges to find this sick man.

In the end, can she find out who has drawn her into this game, and can she survive?

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I really enjoy the well written story. I had a hard time relating to the character of Nora but as the story progressed, I found my feelings changing and becoming more involved with the character. If you love a good murder mystery than this is a story for you, with twists and turns which will have you glued to the book and have you reading into the early morning trying to finish a chapter.

The story if impactful and as the author drip feeds the clues to you it is a great page turner, I don’t really like stories which you know the murderer in the first five chapters and then you are constantly cursing the lead character, but this book did not give me those vibes at all.

This is a great beach book, where you can just get absorbed into the world and forget your reality for a bit. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series and see which next adventure Nora gets to go on.

This is a new author to me and I love all things murder mystery but this one was over the top. The storyline is amazing, it’s kind of like a game show that no one wants to be on. The characters are super relatable and at first you hate them but by the end the ones you started out hate you don’t hate quite as much.

Nora, who has not had an easy life up to this point, is persuaded to join the Cayman Island Police force. Just less than a month into the job Nora and her partner stumble across a kidnapping where unbeknownst to Nora the kidnapper has chosen her to participate in his story. Now with a girl's life on the line Nora has to complete four separate challenges or the Kidnapped victim will face the consequences. As the story unfolds it seems that though they thought they had all the pieces figured out it turns out that they don’t know the full story. Can Nora complete the challenges in time to avoid consequences to the victim? Will the truth about the past ever fully be uncovered?

This is a story as old as time where the past doesn’t always stay in the past and until all the secrets have come to life the whole story cannot be uncovered. This book takes a while for the reader to start putting the pieces together. It is a compelling read that I could not put down. I myself am excited to dive into the other books in this series to see what this author has up his sleeve next for Nora. I will be recommending this book to everyone, definitely give it a try you won’t be disappointed!

Deadly Sommer
By Nicholas Harvey
5*
This book is the best type of suspense. The type that is filled with believable characters and a believable storyline. The main character is Nora and she is new to the Cayman Island Constable force. She has taken this position after facing a tragedy. She is also the first to admit that she is only alive because she does not want her friends and family to feel what she is feeling right now. She also is the lucky chosen constable who is tasked with participating in a series of games to free a hostage who is being held by a mad man. This mad man is Live Streaming every single one of these games and the entire world is watching and waiting to see what will happen to Nora and this hostage. The Cayman islands are a nice peaceful place that don’t see this type of crime frequently, to say they are unsure how to handle this is an understatement. Add to this, the hostage is the daughter of a prominent American businessman. In comes the FBI to help the American citizen. What they see is that this is they type of case where no amount of experience will help. What will succeed is following their gut.
This story had the most amazing characters and was an amazing look at family and friendships. It also was a look at how people handle trauma. I’m not sure that the author set out with this to be the purpose, but it struck me that many of the characters had faced a recent trauma and were responding in very different ways. I will most definitely be reading more of the Nora Sommer Books!

A suspenseful thriller where the reader is just as out of the loop as the characters continue to develop. This Multiple POV style mystery followed Nora, a Norwegian runaway turned Cayman police officer as she is thrown into a vicious battle between sides, and no one is safe. Physically and mentally tested to save the life of someone she’s never met, Nora battles against the odds where most humans would fail.

As she runs from a burdened past, Nora is a strong-willed fighter that has gone through hell and back just to be thrown into more turmoil. As she runs from the grief of a past love, Nora distracts herself as much as possible. The relation to not wanting to feel or acknowledge life after the loss of someone you loved is where sympathy plays a huge role in this literature. As she continues on to play puppet in the games where multi-millionaires are revealed to be more than what meets the eye, Nora faces some of her greatest fears.

An easy read with a twisting and compelling plot that leaves the reader on their toes and wanting more, the author does a fantastic job of drawing you in and taking you for a wild ride. Happily able to say that the remainder of the series and related books will be happily read in the near future.

What is there to say about Deadly Sommer? Well it reminded me a lot of the movie Untraceable. There’s always a story to tell. Especially once one resorts to kidnapping.
Nora Sommer, nineteen, and new to the Cayman Island police force thought she was going to have a normal day. Well boy was she wrong. Getting looped into a 4 challenge scheme to rescue the daughter of a prominent Florida business man Donovan Briggs.
Jensen Massey is trying to prove a point. That his wife was murdered and that it was covered up. So he kidnaps Skylar Briggs and enlists Nora into helping him with his game. “Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil” Broadcast online for anyone to see. Jensen has a message and doesn’t plan to stop till the family he feels is behind his wife's death is brought down and held responsible.
Will Nora get through all 4 challenges?
Does Skylar end up hurt and/or dead?
Where does the Briggs family fall into all this?
The author keeps you intrigued and guessing on what will happen next. Weaving you through a story of corruption, lies, and the benefits of having friends in high places. Unfortunately an innocent young woman is used as a pawn to get the story across. If you like suspenseful thrillers this book is definitely for you!

Deadly Sommer is a book about a young rookie officer who recently joined the force on a small island in the Caribbean. Weeks into her new job, a girl is kidnapped and the young officer finds herself alone, thrust into a game of challenges that she must complete and she has to play by the kidnappers' rules. As she begins these challenges she realizes it wasn't by chance that she was the one selected, the kidnapper chose her specifically, and when her losing means the death of the kidnapped girl, failure is not an option.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a good story and was an interesting read. You find out early on who the kidnapper is, so you are left to solve the “why?”. The kidnapper is not asking for money, they have a purpose for taking this girl and for the way they did it. I enjoyed following Nora through these seemingly random challenges and reading her thoughts along the way. I did have to take away one star because this book has a very slow start. I usually appreciate an author painting a picture with words to draw you into the story, but this seemed excessive. There was too much description in some places to the point where it distracts from the story. Fortunately, the story is good enough that I still think it is worth 4 stars.

This book is more than a well worth read, I loved it with a passion from start to finish. I could not put this one down! Seriously it did hold its grip on me quite well, and it kept me guessing. I loved this book was unpredictable and really brought a lot to the table! The suspense level was amazing and well done!

This is a book that held a new author for me. I will certainly say I will be reading the rest of the series with passion. The danger that the contents contained was mind blowing. I loved the build up as I read. Nothing seemed to be what it seemed. I felt I was right there with Nora trying to crack this case. She was a super awesome character by the way. I was truly captivated and on edge. The thrill of this book was defiantly there. It also had its shocks moments for the reader. Freaking loved it from start to finish!

A must read to say in small words for sure. I highly do recommend this author and their grand writing skills, as well as the book and the series I will be for sure indulging in. A high recommendation for sure!

Nora Sommer is only a few weeks into her new career as a police officer on the normally pretty quiet Cayman Islands. Her first case is definitely one for the books. A young woman named Skylar, daughter of a rich businessman, is kidnapped. Nora is the first on the scene. Once getting there, a video pops up of a man congratulating Nora for being chosen to compete in 4 challenges to potentially save Skylar’s life. If Nora beats all 4 challenges, both women will be set free. If Nora fails said challenges, Skylar has a chance of being killed.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me on my toes trying to guess what is going to happen next. Everything was so unpredictable. I also really liked how the author wrote the antagonist, he had a reason for everything which made him much more relatable and I could sympathize with him.

Meanwhile Nora is amazing. She had a hard life already in her 19 years of life and she is just trying to make the best of it. She is witty and sarcastic. Although she didn’t know Skylar, she was still willing to throw her life away to save this young girl.

Boy, did this book start out and keep up the pace, all the way through. I do feel I would have been clearer on some things if I had read previous books from the series that included Nora. However, the descriptions are beautiful and engaging, the little blurbs about the background story help fill in enough of a gap of info to keep you invested and feeling included, and the mysteries the author calls on Nora and the reader to solve are excellent. What a good book! I'm interested in learning more about Nora, AJ and friends.

Nore is a new constable on the PD in the Cayman Islands, and living in a friends shack. On a normal day, normal patrol with her partner, she discovers a kidnapping and is chosen by a madman to be the pawn for his insane revenge plot. Racing the clock, Nora has to complete a series of difficult challenges to protect the victim.

Gripping, intense, suspenseful, with a lot of crazy twists and turns, Nora was an excellent lead character and an interesting POV here. Starting the AJ series now!

Deadly Sommer (Nora Sommer Caribbean Suspense Book 1) by Nicholas Harvey - Review by Maryn Belling

Deadly Sommer is the first book in the Nora Sommer Caribbean Suspense series by Nicholas Harvey. If you’ve been waiting to meet a new female main-character built of tenacity, grit, gumption, sass, and resourcefulness (and a past) Nora Sommer is who you’ve been seeking!
Deft storyline creation with compartmentalization that ring of Tom Clancy or Shakespeare, Nicholas Harvey brings us into the world of the Caribbean. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re a seasoned traveler, details bring the water, land, and people to life with familiarity and uniqueness.

Appealing to natives & transplants, Nora’s thinking brings us all together: “Home can be about familiarity, where you were born, or where you spent the most time, but ultimately it came down to people.” Her youth belies wisdom & experience.

Added bonus: Norwegian swear words!

Nora is a native Norweigian who is living on the Grand Cayman Islands. She is a newly inducted Constable with the local police department. This particular area doesn’t see a lot of crime but Nora is chomping at the bit to do “something fun”. Little does she know that her life is about to change!
Entering a house that had a sign that lured Nora and her partner, Nora finds herself in a dangerous mind game with a girl’s life at stake. Can she maneuver through these grueling tasks that this insane kidnapper is demanding, while knowing that he’s livestreaming every step she takes?
This is a new-to-me author but not much longer! There are other stories that give a little bit more of Nora’s back story but I don’t feel like I missed a lot by not reading them prior. The author gives enough background to grasp the gist of her story. I do look forward to going back and reading other books that contain her character to see how she progresses. This book did not disappoint and kept me on the edge of my seat!

This is the first book in the Nora Sommer Caribbean Suspense series. We were introduced to Nora in the author's previous books. I haven't read though but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of this story.
This story is fast paced and full of twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing. I loved the plot and how Nora has to complete 4 stages to try and find the kidnapper. This additional challenge adds to the suspense of the story as there is no guarantee that Nora will succeed. There is so much at stake on Nora succeeding and finding this kidnapper.
Nora has troubles and failures in her past which threaten to come to light during this already stressful time. With everyone watching her and the life of someone else on the line, can Nora rise to the challenge and bring her home safely or will the pressure get to much for her and jepodise her career and the life of the kidnappers victim.

Deadly Sommer had me hooked from the beginning and only got better. Nora Sommer is the new constable in the Cayman’s and has quite a bit on her plate from the very start. Coupled with recent loss and grief and new beginnings, Nora has her work cut out for her. Taking on the new job, Nora expected a change in pace and a bit of time to relax, but that just isn’t the case. She is thrown into a kidnapping case almost immediately and it only escalates from there. It isn’t long before she finds herself in the middle of a sick mind game, where she has to solve four challenges and race against time to rescue the kidnap victim. As the author slowly feeds you clues, you find yourself more and more involved with the plot and the characters. This is a great page turner for those who love murder, mystery, and mayhem. I will definitely be grabbing the future books in this series to see where we go next!

This book was fascinating to me. At first, I struggled to connect with Nora, she seems closed off and doesn’t enjoy talking to people, and seems to not have many friends or meaningful relationships and the reason for that is devastating and explained later in the book. The book follows Nora, a young and new officer whom a kidnapper personally chooses to go through his challenges in order to save the life of the kidnapped girl. The challenges were unique and meaningful and all part of a bigger picture. I did end up enjoying the fact that Nora was not so touchy-feely as most women I read about. She was strong, a survivor of hard times, and authentic. She was also insanely smart and creative during the challenges and I absolutely loved watching this unfold. I was on the edge of my seat until the very end. I enjoyed the end much more than I thought I would it took a different turn than I expected which I loved. I would definitely recommend reading this if you want unique suspense.

I thoroughly enjoyed this action packed crime thriller, which had me hooked from page one. Nora Sommer's is new to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, and her first case is definitely not one she will forget. Nora is first on the scene when the daughter of a wealthy businessman goes missing, she is then 'chosen' by the kidnapper to complete four treacherous challenges. The crime is then live-streamed on the internet for everyone to watch as Nora faces the dangerous challenges, whilst the kidnapped girl’s life depends on her success. However, it’s not just the girls life on the line as Nora undertakes this difficult case. The storyline is full of drama and suspense, whilst the plot twists kept me guessing. Nora is a strong main character, who is likeable and relatable and I felt engaged with her throughout the story. I literally could not put this book down, it’s a real page turner.

Deadly Sommer (Nora Sommer Caribbean Suspense Book 1) by Nicholas Harvey. I love this genre, its my absolute favorite so it was no surprise that I loved this book and can't wait for the next one. Its the story of Nora who has been talked into joining the Cayman Island Police Department. Before she can even get her feet wet she is thrown into a kidnapping case that involves her more than ever. The kidnapper has a victim but wants Nora to be his next victim so he wants her to complete these challenges in order to save the other victim. The challenges are crazy and Nora has never experienced anything like this ever. As all good "Who Done Its" secrets come out and of course it can change the whole course of the investigation. Will Nora be strong enough to complete the challenges and help the victim live along with herself? Read this amazing Mystery to find out!

Phenomenal, edge of your seat read. Had me hooked from page one & the initial kidnapping…First time reading author Nicholas Harvey, however it won’t be my last!! Easy 5 stars! Can’t wait for Nora’s next adventure! Will go back & read the prequel, Finding Sommer, as well as the AJ Bailey Adventure Series.

Nora Sommers is settling in as a tough as nails heroine; newly assigned consulate to the Cayman police force, when her & her new partner are swept into a complex plot set in motion by a grieving husband, while on patrol. Full of twists & turns, Nora raises against the clock in order to save the hostage & solve the crime.

Action packed & full of suspense, I found that I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!! Thoroughly enjoyed the sprinkle of humor and the tropical island references too! Highly recommend

After reading the prequel and all the books where Nora Sommers is introduced, i coudnt wait to see how this would go. It went very well indeed. Nora is a 19 year old Norweigan living in Grand Cayman, who after a horrendous start (the subject of other books), begins life anew as a police trainee. The boooks are all told from the perspective and mind of this young woman living in a different world with a huge personal trauma and tragedy to overcome. The book is excellent. My only thought is that there might be too much action and challenges for a brand new constable. But it is the first book so it establishes her skills and her blinders. Definitely recommend: However, i was more invested because i read the book where she is introduced Ghost Mountain, and the prequel, finding Sommer. That would be nice , but not necessary.

First book of a new series features Nora, a 19 year old constable with a somewhat checkered past. Taken under his wing, the chief along with her friend, AJ are hoping to help her through her escape from a trafficking ring and loss of her soulmate. Being of Norwegian decent she certainly stands out on the Caribbean island, the setting for this series.
This case involves the kidnapping of the daughter of a local businessman. Who to noone's surprise has questionable business practices. Nora is "selected" by the kidnapper to solve puzzles to prevent harm to his captive.
You'll follow along with each puzzle and her ability to solve them in his "See no Evil, Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil" plot that releases information regarding the father. You'll also see how Chief Whitaker and the police force try to find their location and execute a resolution to the kidnapping and save the daughter.

Deadly Sommer - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Detective Nora Sommer is new to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Force, having recently transferred from Norway - only to be thrown in at the deep end of Nicholas Harvey's latest AJ Bailey spin-off series opener, Deadly Sommer.
As part of his great Caribbean Suspense series, it could be straight out of the British tv series, Death in Paradise, with the twist of a psychotic killer, a là Dirty Harry thrown into the mix, as Nora's 'nominated' by the twisted kidnapper as the candidate for an against-the-clock race from one task to the next, in a bid to save a young woman's life...will she succeed?

Get your copy of Deadly Sommer - a riveting psychological-thriller by Nicholas Harvey, that you simply must not miss - highly recommended!

This is my first book by this author which I enjoyed and look forward to reading more from him. I enjoyed his writing style that made the story come to life. His attention to details made the story realistic. I found this book to be fast paced and full of twists and turns. I enjoyed how the characters were able to pull me into their story. They are connectable and kept me turning pages to the end. They have great growth throughout which made the story easy to read. You don’t want to miss what happens in this story. A daughter comes up missing and puts Nora’s success and failures to the test. What will happen to Nora with everyone watching her? She is a great, supportive character. She is my favorite and made the story for me. A great afternoon story that I highly recommend.

Deadly Sommer is the first book in the Nora Sommer Caribbean Suspense series. I hope the author makes a prequel, because there is a lot of reference to Nora's past and how/why she joined the police force. This is the first book I have read by this author but I am hooked. It was so well written, and the characters were wonderful. He even wrote the locals' speech in the broken English you would find in the Cayman Islands. This book was filled with suspense, and kept me on the edge of my seat. It slowly unraveled, but kept us guessing what would come next. Nora is an amazing character, despite being young and a rookie cop, she is very resourceful and passionate. I cant wait to read the next book in the series.
