An advantage of being ill is having time to just sit and read, and this turned out to be the perfect story for recuperation reading.
I really enjoyed the first novel in the A Season in Pinecraft series, Her Heart's Desire, but I loved this one even more. It was great to meet Mary and Jayson again, but Betsy's story is totally captivating. Sheltered all her life by overprotective parents Betsy is taking an extended trip away to break free and to tick off items on her 'life list'. The first item on the list is to learn to play golf, but on her first visit to the local course she is saved from injury on the fairway by August Troyer, the son of missionary parents who are serving overseas and who disapprove of their son's life choice. August takes on the task of teaching Betsy, and that is so wonderfully described that I shan't spoil it by giving any hints here!
Betsy's life list sends ripples into several other lives. August's friend Nate takes his courage into both hands and asks a very important question. Sisters Danielle and Annie begin to mend their damaged relationship (and OH how I would LOVE to know more about them, both in terms of Danielle's family, and Annie's fledgling relationship with Jack). And the changes in relationships between two sets of parents and their children are really well portrayed, as is the portrayal of the parenting of August by his Uncle and Aunt, who are lovely people.
There are so many fantastic things to say about this book. It's engrossing, amusing, agonising (one particular episode in a hospital room stands out!), and joyous! Shelley Shepard Gray creates a fully rounded cast of characters with completely believable strengths and weaknesses. There are no 'bit part' actors here. I honestly can't wait for the next instalment, Lilly's story, and my wait is going to be a long one since I've been lucky enough to read a very early manuscript ahead of this novel's publication in summer 2023. All I can say is that if you're looking for a summer holiday read, add this to the top of the list.
For transparency, I work with the publisher so have seen an early manuscript. It is therefore possible that there may be some changes in the final manuscript. I was not required to write a review, or to make any positive comments. All the views above are my own.
