He's the enemy I can't resist - but fate has other plans.

Unlike other college students, I hide in the shadows. I should be out partying and living it up. Instead, I’m running from monsters that torment my mind, along with the salacious hunger of a shadow beast living inside me.

Unprepared and totally lost, I’m told that I must get into the Aries Academy to fulfill my destiny as a warrior shifter. But my fate is fraught with challenges.

Secrets emerge about my path, wreaking havoc in my life. Just as a dark, ruthless and powerful man threatens to claim me as his own. Is he evil incarnate or my fated mate?

All I know is that it is he who holds a deadly secret—one that could lead to my destiny or my undoing.

***Note to readers: This is the first book in a college-age, steamy, paranormal romance series. Expect a kick-ass heroine, shifters, vampires, fae, and enough action to keep your heart racing with every turn of the page. If you like books by Elizabeth Briggs, Jaymin Eve, Caroline Peckham, and Susanne Valenti, you will love this book! (18+).

Readers should note that there are trigger warnings at the beginning of the book, but there is one I feel has been left out, so here is your proceed-with-caution-when-reading PSA:

MST (Military Sexual Trama): Sexual assault or sexual harassment one experiences while serving in the military.

Yes, R.C. Luna mentions SA in the trigger warnings, but this is a pretty specific type of assault needing to be expanded upon further. I work for a VA hospital and I am part of the intake department for applications of those who have suffered from MST, so this is not at all a subject I take lightly, nor did I appreciate for the most part how Luna handled it in this book, but I'll get to that in a little bit.

Had I not felt obligated to leave a review due to this copy being provided in exchange for a review through Goodreads, I would have abandoned this book within the first two chapters. The writing is choppy and unpolished, the pace moves far too quickly, and it feels like a gigantic information dump. There is too much telling, not enough showing. These beginning pages felt more like the author's outline for the story she wanted to relay rather than the actual story itself. In just the first two chapters we are told about a marriage and divorce, that Sasha sees things in the shadows (I would have liked more description on HOW they made her feel when she saw them), her rocky relationship with her parents, and so much more.

Now comes the military portion, which takes up the middle of this short read. It's Sasha's divorce lawyer who refers her to his brother, a recruiter. At this point, Sasha has described herself as a total wreck on the brink of madness. I don't feel anyone in that lawyer's position would refer anyone going through that type of mental trauma to the military. In a sense, the military is its own special type of mental trauma, something Sasha didn't need.

Despite the dialogue not feeling very natural in parts, the middle part of the book seemed stronger and better written. I question how much research actually went into developing what Basic Training is like; I asked a few veteran friends about some things that made me raise an eyebrow, and they said it wasn't like that at all. For example, they ate actual food and not MREs as Luna writes. One thing she did get correct is they weren't allowed to talk during meals. I think a little more research and questions asked from real veterans would have benefited this storyline.

The MST. I was nervous, extremely nervous, how this would go. We have a TI (a supernatural character, so he has some ability to kind of mind control) who all of the women recruits find attractive, including our heroine. It's described in some detail the sexual things she wants to do with him, and it left me feeling unsettled. Luna almost seemed to be making this seem glamorous, but I just felt sick. I like a bad boy just as much as the rest, but there are lines that shouldn't be crossed, and this power dynamic in the military is not one of them. People, this is not sexy! And while in the end good prevailed over evil, there was still even more commentary about his hotness. Just because someone is smokin' doesn't mean this type of "relationship" is steamy.

Now for the supernatural bits. I think Luna was on to something really special with the Zodiac houses and the nagual (jaguar shapeshifter) arc. This actually felt pretty fresh to me, and I wish the military stuff hadn't existed at all and just explored Sasha trying to find her shaman while trying not to go insane before it was too late. This just felt like Luna maybe had two story ideas and then combined them into one.

This was not for me, but I wish Luna all the best in her writing career. Her imagination is incredible, but she just needed a bit more guidance with plot pacing, polishing, and editing. I found a slew of backward apostrophes, grammatical errors, missing words, and total lack of the Oxford comma.

Sasha's Destiny . . .

Sasha Moreno is Nagual of the Underworld and Protector of the Gates of the Zodiac, but this could not happen until her 20th birthday. Her Aunt Lily tried to prepare her for it, but her mother only wanted to ignore it and hope it never happened. But her aunt told her a shaman would come to help her by taking her to a school to understand what this was all about. There would be others just like her there. But for now, Lily asked her to only talk about the lights she sees around people with her and not tell anyone else, even her mom. At 10 years old, she saw a vision of her aunt’s plane crashing on her trip home from a visit. Unfortunately, believing her niece, Lily changed planes and it was the plane she was on now that crashed and killed her.

Ten years later, remembering the things her aunt told her, Sasha sees shadows cover the walls as they slither toward her, accompanied by a dark mist that held creatures of the underworld that tried to grab at her with claws. Demons were in the corners at night. She called this living nightmare the Zodiac Shadows since her nightmares showed a zodiac sign she had to fight her way to through the shadows.

Now as she went to eat at her favorite bodega, someone grabbed her wrist and said she must cross the Zodiac Gate soon, there was not much time, and her shaman who was the only one who could help her was missing. She had to find the shaman, cross the Gate, or she would lose her mind. She was way behind in her training now and must get to the Academy. The Shadow had called her a Nagual. What was that? And when a dark, ruthless, and powerful man enters her life, is he evil or her fated mate? How will she know? And what must she do next?

I found this a difficult book to get into. It was too strange for my liking and didn’t move forward at a good pace. The main character is clueless, not her fault but still frustrating to the reader who is also waiting for enlightenment or clarification. I doubt that I will continue with this series.

My mind is officially BLOWN 😮
I didn’t THINK it could be done. I picked up this book, expecting the enemies to lovers shifter romance stories I crave. What I got was all that and SO MUCH MORE.

🙌👏 The book is fantastically written with characters that leap off the page. Sasha’s journey is heartbreaking and oh so empowering, all at once. To see a character develop that much, with so many obstacles and challenges all around her, is incredibly fulfilling. While she’s getting pulled into the arms of a someone that is clearly a Dark Fae!

For anyone that loves a plot with depth, a character that grows, is a huge fan of enemies to lovers and wants to be swept away into a powerful love story with a HUGE twist – look no further, this book is for you. Fans of all things astrology and books like Zodiac Academy, Zodiac Wolves and Sarah Piper books, will get such a kick out of how astrology and mysticism take shape in this story. It goes deep… I was reading that one reviewer said they found it complicated – but this wasn’t true for me. Get ready to learn about new worlds, magical systems and mystical creatures. I didn’t want the book to finish and can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Loved this book! 😍

I am really enjoying this series so far.

You follow Sasha in trying to navigate her life and make a better future for herself while trying not to have her mind drive her crazy . She has powers she does not know how to fully control and she needs to find her shaman before time is up. Only problem is hes been off the grid and doesn't want to be found.

But that's not her only problem. She has made enemies in the army and they do not plan on giving her up .

I couldn't believe a broke girl from the hood with daddy issues could have come this far in such a short time.

What a amazing story. Very different from what I usually read. Character growth and how she kept herself from going mad and harnesses her abilities on her own was very cool

I’m hooked! Bring on the next book!

Wow! What a ride! This book has it all…action, adventure, magic, emotions, sex, interesting characters and creatures, not to mention hot men in uniform. I love how the zodiac, psychic and magical elements were woven together into an unputdownable story. It pulled me in from the start, and now I’m hooked! I can’t wait to see what happens next for Sasha. Hurry up, RCLuna, finish the next book already!

This was a really fun read! We follow our MC, Sasha, as she goes through an incredible journey to find her shaman who will help guide her to the zodiac gates.
I really enjoyed her journey through her military training. It was very detailed and I felt like I was right there with her.
The ending does finish with a cliff hanger. I am excited to see what comes next in Sasha’s story!

I'm gonna be honest… it's not often I DNF a book before I get more than 2% in, but this is one of the rare few that deserves that distinction. The writing was so poor that I was making faces before the first chapter was up. The writing was weak and leading into the story, the setup skimmed over a lot of information (not all of it relevant) before we'd even been introduced to the main character. What little it did portray of her didn't endear her to me. She narrated with lots of exclamation points and depressed pining. It was like the author was trying to vomit out a backstory we didn't need as quickly as possible only to lead into a dream sequence.

There was no action. No tension. Nothing to characterize the main character particularly well other than to know she was depressed and neglecting herself, and seeing demons in the corners of her room - but the demons weren't important. The dialogue was atrocious. It didn't even remotely sound like normal human conversation. The descriptions in the narrative wavered between entirely missing to amazingly purple prose that seemed out of place.

This book was awful. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless it went through an honest to god complete rewrite and a stringent editor. Avoid. It is not worth your time.

I usually reserve 1⭐️ for dnf but this one earned it.

Oh thank gaged that’s over with.

I was so excited about this book when I found out about it on TikTok, as someone with Taino heritage, I was over the moon about this idea but where was the Taino mythology? We got some mesoamerican but just a smidge. The pacing was wild and this book was so confusing. If you have to read a prequel first to understand anything, then the prequel should have been book one. And don’t get me started on the horrifying smut. I literally said EW out loud. Needless to say I will not be continuing on with this series

Love the books that you cannot stop reading because you don’t know what it is going to happen next. This is one of them. Well written, very engaging storyline and I can even imagine it will make a great movie script . Can’t wait to read the next books.

I don’t understand the “zodiac” part, but I understand fate. The first two chapters blended together in a live dream as Estrellita slid down towards insanity. In what came before, she shoplifted, tried marijuana, married and escaped a mafia criminal, and learned lock-picking. I couldn't see it. What I saw was a sweet girl running from the shadows creeping into her vision, and she became so scared she joined the military.

Boot camp was good for her character. Without any training on her powers, Sasha started to be hounded by shadows again. Finally she felt confidant enough to confront her fears, those shadow claws reaching for her. The military is empowering. However, one of her TIs, Grange, was a vampire, and he was preying upon some female recruits. Estrellita somehow found a way to fight back against his predation that made me cheer!

Meanwhile, she had to find her shaman, her spirit guide, as her dead aunt requested. I don't know how she did it. Estrellita seemed like a witch able to pull extra time out of her purse to explore the meaning of the auras at lights-out, and then visit the location where she could sense the guide. TBH, I thought this section was too slow for me, but the ending was worth it.

This story feels like a coming-of-age. Estrellita had to battle her derangement to reach that powerful jaguar inside. Her training was waterboard tough.

I liked the side characters, too. They were sympathetic, even if they needed more development. Since this is a first in a series, I expect there will be more.

• Yes, it ends in a cliffhanger
• Yes there is smut after a slow buildup
• Yes, there is a surprise twist at the end.
• MF, not RH
• 🌶🌶🌶

Having read the prequel to this book, I was very intrigued as to how it would pan out and how the Zodiac Shadows would develop in Sasha's world.

Sasha has not had an easy life in her 19 years of age - she doesn't have a happy home life, made plenty of bad decisions in her past and decides the best course of action for her life is to join the military. Maybe there she can finally get her life in order and make some positive steps forward. However, life in the military is far from easy. The shadows she constantly sees seem to be taking over her daylight hours as well as her sleep. The TI for her flight has a few dangerous secrets up his sleeve and Sasha has to try to get everything under her control before she starts to go completely insane!

Luckily for her, she manages to learn some control on the things going on around her and when she finally finds the one she was told to search for, she's still not sure about everything she has learned along the way. Can she trust what this person is telling her? Looks like she doesn't really have much of a choice after the ending!

I liked Sasha, despite her flaws. She has had to deal with so much in such a short time, but is determined to come out on top, to not let anyone control her ever again, to stand up for herself and those she cares about against all the odds. The side characters of Santos and Trent were a great source of support and I hope we get to see more of them in the next book as well.

I'm looking forward to reading more of this new series - I need to know more about the Zodiac Houses and what being a nagual really means for Sasha.

I received a copy of this book through BookSprout, but this review is my own honest one!

Sasha Moreno is a Miami girl who is both gifted and cursed. Gifted with a second sight, nurtured by her beloved Aunt Lily, that allows her to see people's auras and experience prophetic, if cryptic, dreams. Cursed because she's fated to become a "Nagual," a guardian of the underworld, yet the shaman who must train her is AWOL and dark mysterious forces stand in her way.

Having grown up with baggage from an abusive environment, Sasha chooses to wipe the slate clean by enlisting in the military — normally a wise move, but no sooner does she begin to discover her potential through rigorous training than she runs smack into the supernatural forces that the stars have made her destiny.

There's a sadistic drill sergeant, Grange, who might just be a vampire, but whose bad boy charm seems nearly irresistible. There's a golden boy recruit with a good aura, but he's troubled and difficult to reach. Then there's that missing shaman, a man named Damian, not exactly a good "omen" in this context.

In "Zodiac Fate," R.C. Luna give us a paranormal coming-of-age romance that spans all the signs of the zodiac — plus a couple more you've probably never heard of — in snappy, sparkly prose. If you like vampires, shifters, magic and steamy sensuality, then I foresee that you will like this book, or I'm no scorpio.

Worldbuilding

It’s really hard to do first-person storytelling well. This book would benefit from professional editing, but despite that it hits the first-person narrative out of the park. Luna builds the world through present personal experience from the FMC, past childhood memories, chance encounters, dreamwalking, and supernatural occurrences. With how much information is thrown at the reader, it feels insane that it all holds together so well. I love how Luna paints the picture of their world! I’m really excited to start the second book!

(Amy) phew! I inhaled this book and am immediately ready to dive into book 2!

This book is a fast-paced, action-packed, slow burn of a paranormal romance. The story follows Sasha, who is a troubled, but resilient and badass FMC as she tries to sort out some mysteries of her childhood, get her life together and maybe find some romance along the way. Unfortunately for her, it turns out monsters are real. One of my favourite parts of the book was how deep the MesoAmerican mythology and the Zodiac is embedded in the story. It’s exciting, alluring, and intense at times.
Perhaps I wanted a little more spice, but I can also see there’s more to come. (Snickers)

This book is on 🔥🔥🔥
I could not put this book down,..(shhh peeking at it on my phone during zoom meetings!) It didn't take long to dig the main character as she was figuring out her own abilities. And the intensity of what she experienced throughout was well written , but left plenty for the imagination. Excited book two is coming out soon!

was not expecting what I got, but it was better!

I didn’t expect this book to go where it did, and to be honest, I think it was better than I was expecting because I was surprised by where it went. This book didn’t feel like the same PNR troupes and it was genuinely original and creative and I am so on board for what comes next, yes please, sign me up!

Anyways, it’s written wonderfully and the characters are relatable and interesting and the story is original creative, and highly entertaining.

5 ⭐️s= Perfect story, exciting, engrossing, well developed complex characters, solid plot with few to no holes, descriptive environments and place settings, great mystery elements, realistic dialogue, believable reactions and behaviors, loved this story so much I’d buy it.

4 ⭐️s= Great story, highly entertaining and enjoyable, exciting storyline, well developed characters and settings, a few discrepancies but nothing that can’t be overlooked. Believable actions and reactions, realistic dialogue, a book I would consider buying.

3 ⭐️s= Good but not great story, noticeable discrepancies, grammatical and or spelling errors, undeveloped characters or unbelievable behaviors but still readable. Nothing majorly wrong with the story, just not interesting enough for me to continue. Would not buy the book.

2 ⭐️s= Not offended by the story, but not interested enough to finish. Unbelievable characters, poor writing, many mistakes, big holes or discrepancies, many spelling or grammatical errors, characters not believable, unlikeable or TSTL.

1 ⭐️= Offensive, extremely poor writing, horrible characters, victimization, gaslighting, blatant abuse, unnecessary violence, child endangerment, or any other highly objectionable behaviors by Main characters. Would never buy this book, and do not recommend it to anyone
