Vartan Gregorian's tale starts with a childhood of poverty, deprivation, and enchantment in the Armenian quarter of Tabriz, Iran. As the world reeled from depression into six years of warfare, his mother died, leaving his grandmother Voski as the loving staff of his life. Through unlettered example and instruction, he learned about the first of his many the strenuousness required for survival, the fairy tale that explained existence, the place and name of his own star in the night sky, how to maneuver as a member of a Christian minority in a benevolent Muslim kingdom, the beauty and inspiration of Armenian Church liturgy, the exciting foreign world of ten-year-old American westerns, the richness of life on the streets. He learned the magic of the innumerable worlds he could find in books -- and he wanted to visit them all. As the spell books cast on him grew more powerful, so did the constraints imposed by his father's indifference to his dreams of redirecting his life through learning. So, one day when he was fifteen years old, he presented himself at an Armenian-French lycée in Beirut, Lebanon, to start the arduous task of becoming a person of learning and consequence. This book tells not only how he reached that school but also about the many people who guided, supported, taught, and helped him on an extravagantly absorbing and varied journey from Tabriz to Beirut to Palo Alto to Tenafly to London, from Stanford University to San Francisco State University to the University of Texas at Austin to the University of Pennsylvania to the New York Public Library to Brown University and, currently, to the presidency of Carnegie Corporation of New York. With witty stories and memorable encounters, Dr. Gregorian describes his public and private lives as one education after another. He has written a love story about life.

Ինձ համար սա 2021-ի թերևս ամենակարևոր գրքերից մեկն է։ Չափազանց անսպասելի, անհավատալի անկեղծ, զարմանալիորեն ուսուցողական և գրական առումով որակյալ այս ինքնակենսագրականը պարզապես Վարդան Գրիգորեանի կյանքի պատմությունը չէ։

Այն պատմություն է, թե ինչպես էին ապրում մեր հայրենակիցները 1930-70 թթ.։ Մենք գիտենք, թե ինչ է եղել Խորհրդային Հայաստանում։ Իսկ Սփյուռքո՞ւմ։ Չէ որ այդ ժամանակ, ու հատկապես 2-րդ աշխարհամարտից հետո դժվար էր բոլորի համար։

Վարդան Գրիգորեանի կենսագրականի լիբանանյան հատվածը ուղղակի գեղարվեստական ֆիլմի սցենար է։ Իսկ ամերիկյան բուհերում սովորելու մասը կարճ կոնսպեկտ քաղաքագիտությունից և միջազգային հարաբերություններից։

Իսկ նրա Նյու-Յորքի գրադարանի ու Քառնեգի հիմնադրամում աշխատած տարիների պատմությունը՝ վարպետության դասընթաց կամ լայֆհակ կամ մաստեր կլաս ԱՄՆ-ում հաջողելու մասին։

Մի խոսքով, իսկապես լավ հուշեր են։ Եվ որ ամենակարևորն է՝ չափազանց օգտակար։

Գիրքը ընթերցել եմ անգլերեն լեզվով ու մտովի անցել եմ հեղինակի ճանապարհը: Հաճելի էր տեսնել գրքերի հանդեպ իր անսահման սերն ու գնահատանքը: Որպես իրեն բախտակից մարդ, այս գիրքը ինձ ոգեշնչեց ու հուսադրեց, որ մարդը իր աշխատասիրության, համառության և խարիզմաով կարող է հասնել առաջին հայացքից անհնար համարվող ցանկություններին: Ընթերցանության ողջ ընթացքում մտովի կազմում էի իմ ինքնակենսագրական գրքի կմախքը, այ տենց ինքը մարդուն հավեսի է գցում: Վերջում ուզում եմ տեղադրեմ գրքից դուրս բերած մեջբերումները:

A book, to me, is still one of the most extraordinary creations of man, because it is a gift if knowledge: someone wrote it because he had something he felt was worth sharing with others, including you; someone gave it to you or recommended it to you or you found it yourself on a shelf in your favorite bookstore. … to construct and cherish a library is to invest now only in ourselves but in future generations. I read Vartan Gregorian's book in preparation for an interview with him. The interview was pleasant, and he was very humble. Yet, I stand by my evaluation that The Road to Home is not a memoir but a clever textbook on probability. On its face, Gregorian's story seems by all accounts impossible. Gregorian's story begins in beautiful Tabriz, sneakerless and destitute. His story ends three hundred pages later in New York City: "I went to meet Bill Gates of Microsoft to try to convince him to become a major philanthropist rather than wait until his retirement." Call it luck, but readers of this book know better. There is an interconnectedness to Gregorian's life — an interconnectedness between his charisma, his work ethic, his bookishness, his humor, his positivity, and his intense intelligence — that permeates every page and successive achievement. Despite his humility in his interview, I refuse to believe he was just lucky. After all, the Central Limit Theorem tells us that over a long period of time, over the course of a life, random variables are not so random.

«Օ՜, նավ մարմնի, օ՜, նավ հոգու, դեգերում ես, դեգերում, դեգերում». Վարդան Գրիգորեանի ամբողջ կյանքն է ուղևորություն եղել՝ Իրանի Թավրիզից մինչև Լիբանան, հետո Կալիֆոռնիա, Տեխաս, Փենսիլվանիա, Ռոդ Այլենդ և Նյու Յորք ու բազմաթիվ այլ վայրեր։

Պարզ, հաճելի գիրք, որում չափազանց կարևոր տեղեկություններ, անգամ ԱՄՆ-ում ապրելու life hack-եր կգտնեք: Հատկապես կհետաքրքրի ինքնակենսագրականներ նախընտրողներին:

Մի աղքատ տղա, ով գիրք գնելու և անգամ վարձակալելու գումար և հնարավորություն չի ունեցել, ով ամբողջ կյանքի ընթացքում կրթվել և կարևորել է կրթության դերը, պաշտել գիրքն ու գիտելիքը։ Ինչպես ինքն է նշում. «Այո, կա' աշխարհի ժողովուրդների ունիվերսալ լեզու։ Դա գիտելիքի և փոխըմբռնման լեզուն է»։

Տղա, ով ունենալով շատ ծանր մանկություն, հաջողում է մեկնել Լիբանան՝ ուսանելու, որտեղ, կրելով բազում զրկանքներ և անցկացնելով սոված օրեր՝ ի վերջո կարողանում է բակալավրի կրթություն ստանալ։ Վարդան Գրիգորեանն իր գրքում բազում անգամներ հիշատակում է այն անձանց, ովքեր մեծ ներդրում են ունեցել իր կյանքում, որոնցից մեկն էլ Սիմոն Վրացյանն է, նրա հովանավորը, աջակիցը, պաշտպանն ու ընկերը։

Տղա, ով անգամ լավ անգլերեն չիմանալով՝ մեկնում է ԱՄՆ՝ իր երազանքի հետևից։ Վարդան Գրիգորեանը ԱՄՆ-ն ընկալում էր մի վայր, որտեղ երազանքները չեն մեռնում, և որտեղ ստիպված չես լինի ապրել երազանքների փլատակներում։ Եվ, կրկին շատ անհատների և կազմակերպությունների շնորհիվ, նա հասավ իր երազանքներին։

Վարդան Գրիգորեանը պատմաբան է, ուսուցիչ, կառավարիչ, առաջնորդ, լավ հայր ու ամուսին, հավատարիմ ընկեր։

Գրքում շատ են այն օրինակները, երբ Վարդան Գրիգորեանը, իր նվիրվածության, սիրո և հավատի շնորհիվ կարողացել է հաղթահարել անհնարին թվացող մարտահրավերները։ Կառավարման ոլորտում նրա գրանցած հաջողությունները ստիպում են ընդունել, որ գիտնականը, դասախոսը նույնպես կարող է լավ կառավարիչ լինել, եթե իր մեջ ունի այդ ջիղերը։

Գրքերի հանդեպ նրա սերը օգնում են նրան Նյու Յորքի հանրային գրադարանի նախագահության տարիներին։ Նա այն կարծիքին էր, որ հաջողության հասնելու դեպքում ամեն բան դրական կլիներ, իսկ ձախողելու դեպքում՝ դա կլիներ արժեքավոր փորձ։ Եվ, գիտակցելով, որ «առաջնորդության հաջողությունը կարելի է չափել նրանով, թե որքան տաղանդ և ինչ կառույց ես թողնում քեզնից հետո», Վարդան Գրիգորեանին հաջողվում է արդյունավետ ղեկավարել գրադարանը։ Հենց նա է ասում, որ «գերեզմանոցները չեն, որ երկրի վրա տղամարդկանց ու կանանց անմահությունն են ապահովում, այլ գրադարանները, թանգարանները, համալսարաններն ու դպրոցները»։ Եվ նրա համար, գրադարան նախագահելը ոչ թե աշխատանք էր, այլ առաքելություն։

Քարնեգիի հիմնադրամը նախագահելու տարիներին, նրա ժառանգության միջոցով Վարդան Գրիգորեանը սովորեց, թե ինչպես է պետք վարվել փողի հետ. պետք է այն բաժանե՜լ։ Եվ նա այդ փողը ուղղեց կրթության արդյունավետության բարձրացմանը բազում երկրներում, աղքատների շրջանում կրթության բարելավմանը, երեխաների կրթության ու խնամքի, նրանց ուսումնառության, դպրոցների բարելավմանը։ Ինչպես ասել է Քարնեգին. «Միայն հանրային կրթության մեջ է հնարավոր գցել կայուն քաղաքակրթության կառույցի հիմքը»։ Վարդան Գիրգորեանի խոսքով լավ կրթություն նշանակում է նաև «բարձրակարգ ուսուցիչներ, ասել է թե՝ գիտելիքի ու հմտությունների այն որակը, որ նրանք բերում են դասարան»։ Ընդհանրապես, նա իր կյանքի ընթացքում շատ է կարևորել ուսուցչի դերը։

Ահռելի մեծ է Վարդան Գրիգորեանի դերը «Ավրորա» մարդասիրական նախաձեռնության մեջ, որը հիմնադրվել է իր,  Նուբար Աֆեյանի և Ռուբեն Վարդանյանի միջոցով։ «Ավրորա»-ի նպատակն է արժանին մատուցել մեր օրերի հերոսներին և գնահատել այն բացառիկ ազդեցությունը, որ նրանց գործունեությունն ունեցել է մարդկային կյանքի պահպանման և մարդասիրական գործն առաջ մղելու գործում։ «Ավրորա» մրցանակը շնորհվում է ամեն տարի, Հայոց ցեղասպանությունը վերապրողների անունից՝ ի երախտագիտություն նրանց փրկողների։

Վարդան Գրիգորեանը մահացել է 2021թ. ապրլի 8-ին՝ իր հետևից թողնելով հսկա ժառանգություն։

Newmag-ի հրատարակած «Տուն տանող ճանապարհը» գիրքն այն գանձն է, որի միջոցով կարող ենք տեղեկանալ մեծանուն հայորդու կյանքի և գործունեության, նրա անցած ուղու, ձեռքբերումների և ձախողումների, անսահման նվիրումի մասին։

Reading about Dr. Gregorian's childhood experiences growing up in Tabriz, Iran, I felt transported to that part of the world. The story of his journey to America could have ended many times, yet his tenacity (and arguably his destiny) overcame the many obstacles.

Other reviewers have found his recollection of academic politics "tiresome," which probably accounts for the majority of the less-than-stellar reviews, but as someone who has no familiarity with the subject, I was intrigued and fascinated.

Most of all, I enjoyed reading about Dr. Gregorian's labor of love in saving the New York Public Library. My mother, who has a Master’s degree in Library Science and worked as a children’s librarian at our public library for more than 30 years, instilled within me (or perhaps it is innate) a deep love of books and libraries. I confess I was overcome with emotion as he cited a long list of ways in which the branch libraries were revitalized between 1981 and 1989 (especially with regards to the children’s resources).

I believe hope is one of the greatest gifts one human can give to another. This book illuminates the hope Dr. Gregorian has delivered to many people, in so many contexts. Borrowing from Emily Dickinson, if “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers,” I now know that feathered thing “That perches in the soul / And sings the tune without the words / And never stops - at all” is a Black-bearded Bushytailed Armenian Muckraker (Protestus Incessantus), and I am one of his biggest fans.

Life story of a well-read Armenian/American, born in Iran.
Took me a while to read, between all the names and all the history and all the politics. I had to look up some names and words :) I did like Gregorian and his integrity, intelligence, sense of humor, etc.
He was a good fundraiser and salesman; I was ready to sign up during his NY Library chapter!

As a librarian this is one of the most inspiring books I have ever read.

I would give this book a 3.5 but that is not an option. This is an amazing story (and autobiography)of a young Armenian kid born into a very average avenue family in Tabriz, Iran in 1935. In many ways it is a story of the power of serindipity. He is spotted as a 12 year old as a very bright kid who had read an amazing list of classics. His spotter made it possible for him to attend an Armenian College in Beruit which was more like a high school/early college. More Seridipity: the headmaster is losing his sight and take Gregorian on as his reader/scribe. In the process the HM gets to know the kid and as he approaches graduation pull the strings he knows (other Armenians) and get young Vartan admitted to both U C Berkley and Stanford. He decides on Stanford. Where he earns both a BA and a Phd in history. That is the Horatio Alger part of the story.

The next phase is his career in the academy--San Francisco State--where S I Hyakawa was president. Then on to the U of T Austin where he tasted his first academic administrative duties with John Silber. Then on to the U of Penn where he rose quickly to Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences then on to the Provost ( a very high job at a research university) This is where the wheels started to come off. He looked to all as the heir apparent to the presidency from all points. But he was passed over at the last moment without giving him a graceful way to both not get the job and save face. The day after he learned that the job was not his he tendered his resignation. Then it was on to the New York Public Library (a VERY big job) then years later to the presidency of Brown U and now the main man at the Carnegie Foundation.

One of the more interesting things is seeing a guy in action who is much more the inspiring leader rather than a manager. His leadership qualities are worth the read. Here is an accommplished academic, who is so much more than a manager, he is a leader. He can get people to walk through concrete walls for him. What he did for the NYC library is truly amazing.

I'm not certain I would like to be his VP Finance, but he sure could bring in the loots and build institutional self confidence.

This is a good read, perhaps a four star.
