A century ago, I lost my family. While on the hunt for a killer in my late mate's pack lands, I found my future.
Mya's my true mate. I know it. My wolf knows it.
We won't let her go.

This book is the closed-door version of FREEING HIS MATE by Nancy Corrigan, the Mainstream fiction pen name of Dana Archer.
---------
As always, Dana guarantees a happily ever after with NO CHEATING.
I can’t give this more than 2.5 even though I mostly enjoyed it. The reasons being the gray areas and one HUGE thing I just didn’t get enough closure on.
The gray area being the question: Is it cheating when you find your true mate but are already in a forced relationship ship with another man. In this circumstance I lean more toward no. The heroine was drugged, raped, and claimed against her will by another male BEFORE she was of legal age to be claimed. She had no way of running or fighting back. She was truly stuck. Plus she had twin daughters with this man and was pregnant with another set when the story starts. It should also be noted that she had to submit to the other man every full moon - regardless if she wanted to or not. So, with that knowledge I can’t 100% consider this cheating but I can’t say that it wasn’t.
The biggest issue though is the Hero’s past relationship. He was in a “breeding” relationship with a woman who he did grow to love but died in childbirth (children died too). I have no problem with him having a past - the OW died 40 yes prior to him meeting th heroine - my issue is that when they became “breeding” partners the OW claimed a part of his soul. The heroine therefore will never have all of him. Plus the way she found out was horrible and then his reaction to her being hurt over it didn’t help him out IMO. Furthermore, while the heroine was initially upset - as she should have been - she got over it too quickly. I wanted to strangle him when he didn’t answer her if it was better with her (h) than with the past “breeding” partner. He lost major points when he couldn’t and didn’t tell her how special or different it was with her (h).
Granted my issues are subjective as technically the h was in a relationship when they met ( the OM also has a part of her soul...however the difference was in the choice. The H chose to give a part of his souls to the OW, the h didn’t have a choice...it was taken from her) and his past relationship was over before she (h) was even born. For me this could have been a 4 Star read if the H would have explicitly told the h that what he had with the OW was nothing compared to what he has with the h because she’s his true mate. That his feeling for the OW pale in comparison to what he feels for the h. I needed to hear that to let me know how much he valued the h and I felt the h deserved those words.
"You're right. I'll fix you. Just as you'll fix me." "Are you broken?" "Shattered."
This book left me so conflicted! On one hand, I absolutely LOVED the story and relationship that bloomed between Rick and Mya. Their love story and courtship was so heart-breaking to read as they were both such broken and beaten characters. Rick has loved before and lost his mate and children during a difficult pregnancy and has lived in stark depression since, struggling to find his path in life. Mya was tricked into a relationship by the dipshit Todd who only views Mya as a way to further his bloodline by giving him sons. However as soon as they find each other, Rick and Mya finally realize their salvation has arrived in the form of their true mate. Their HEA was hard-fought but well-deserved, and I just loved every single beautifully written word of their story.
On the other hand, I was confused by some of the rules and terminology of this shifter world. Despite the fact that this world also operates on the archaic idea of complete male dominance over women (and not the sexy kind), there were also a lot of minor details about this shifter world and its different characters that I feel I never fully understood. However, I found myself not really bogged down by the details and kept reading because the bones of the story were that good. Overall, I'd say this book is worth the read and plan on reading more from this author!
Freeing His Mate is the first book in the Shifter Affairs series, and it is set in the same world as the Royal Kagan series. That being said, this review is for this book alone. And what a book it is! You have an 'old' wolf, depressed and contemplating suicide. He meets a waitress who perks his interest, only to find out that she is bonded unwillingly to somebody else as his breeding partner. Throw in an old murder, drugs rampaging through a town, assassins, new partners, cute kids, and you have a book that will keep you engrossed from start to finish.
Whilst this is the first book in the new series, we do reunite with some old favourites of mine from the Royal Kagan series. These appearances enhance this story without taking it over, giving it a depth and a richness. There are new characters to grow fond of and wait impatiently for their story. A perfect combination of new and old, guaranteed to satisfy.
This story was exceedingly well written, with no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading. The scenes flowed smoothly from one to the next, and the pacing was perfect. An absolute stunner of a first book, that will definitely leave you wanting more. Highly recommended by me.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *
Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Jan 2, 2018
Good overall story. Hated the shifter world portrayed, though, where women are considered nothing and can be treated anyway a man chooses with no repercussions. It is medieval at best and horrific and brutal at worst. Not fun to read when a woman has no way to defend herself at all.
I liked this book well enough. The characters were fun and the plot was interesting enough. Things did start to bore me at the end, this made everything feel a tad lacklustre (especially that end fight, I just wanted it to be over because I just didn’t care anymore). I also hate hate hate an epilogue from someone else’s POV that is more to promote the next book than pull together this one. Oh well.
Ms. Corrigan is a new to me author, and I'm surprised and awed by the intensity with which she writes.
This shifter world is very different from others I've read about. It's complex and complicated. Laws have been established and are abided by. To challenge a law could mean death. But to take that risk... It could mean all the happiness in the world if you remain the victor.
Is it worth it? Challenging another male for the right to mate with his breeding partner if that breeding partner is your true mate? Is it worth risking the wrath of the male who claimed you against your will to let your heart lead and, for once, grab what Fate has placed in front of you?
For Rick and Mya, yes and yes.
Their story isn't the only one to unfold. The game's afoot as Rick and his new partner, Uri, work to solve a cold crime and find out who's behind the influx of drugs in town. The twist at the end, the reveal of the Whodunit, was well written. No matter how many times I read this story, connecting the dots to that final moment was impossible. Ms. Corrigan did, in my opinion, a terrific job of maintaining the suspense and mystery while letting Rick and Mya's romance grow.
The ending will leave you happy and anxious. Happy for Rick and Mya and her children, even the unborn ones, and anxious to know what comes next.
A word of warning: the archaic brutality of this world might not sit well with all readers. I get it. There's a level of civility I, myself, have come to expect in paranormal romances, and the fact this one is more supernatural and brutal took my breath away.
But is this a book worth reading? Absolutely. Rick and Mya's story is a standalone in this series. Old characters make cameos and may leave you a little lost if you haven't read any other Royal-Kagan stories, but hang in there. I promise it's worth it.
Will I read the next book? Absolutely. If Ms. Corrigan can make me sit up and take notice of this story with just the first page, I imagine the books to come will be just the same.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋💋 A new excellent series by Nancy Corrigan. And one I’ve waited for with baited breath. I’m so glad to read this book, Mya is mated to another shifter but he’s not her life mate , just her breeding partner, and she hates his touch , she has twin daughters and is now pregnant again , but is at the end of her tether . She needs to get away from his abusive behaviour, but how . Rick is part of shifter affairs and has lost his breeding partner, he’s about to give up on life when he meets Mya in a local bar . Realising she’s his life mate he pulls out all the stops to protect her and make her realise they were meant to be together. Loved this book and can’t wait for more x
This story hides behind repetitive dialogue and is a bit confusing with all the doublespeak.
In a nutshell, Rick Lyall's breeding partner (any feminist need read no further) died during childbirth leaving Rick a broken, suicidal shell of a man. Rick joins Shifter Affairs, aka law enforcement for shifters, and heads off to his assignment investigating the cold case murder of Benjamin Tanner. Rick meets his new partner Uriel, aka Uri, a Royal, immortal multi-animal shifter, to work the case. Fortunately for him, his true mate, Mya Ammon, still lives and he has found her. The roadblock for him to her is her mate to whom she is a, you guessed it, breeding partner, only.
Rick and Mya are instantly attracted to one another which sparks fear in Mya since she was claimed as a mate before she was of age and has never experienced the myriad of feelings she feels towards Rick. Mya's mate, Todd, mated Mya because he needed to breed strong boys to carry on the family name. How fitting that Mya has already birthed him a set of female twins. Todd's response to the twins was to keep trying. Thus, Mya finds herself pregnant again--with twins. Todd can only hope that Mya is carrying twins. All of this and Rick remains undeterred. True mates!
The story is an okay one although mired down in heavy, repetitive dialogue and laden with grammatical errors and typos. I got to chapter 18 and all but didn't finish. The oppression for Mya overwhelms the story, and after reading her thoughts on how she is treated in every single chapter, it gets monotonous. If you can get through all that, you can appreciate the story for what it is, a story about an abused woman who finds redemption.
Note: This is the "tame" version of this story. If you want a spicer read, check out the retitled version, Freeing His Mate by Nancy Corrigan.
The book starts out fairly strong & grabbed my attention quickly, but looses it's momentum along the way. Things start to drag & feel like they have been going on forever. By the last 25% of the book, I had thoughts of quitting & struggling to keep going. I started skimming thru pages to get to the end. There's not a whole lot of world building, I'm assuming from all the versions of "Shifter World" I noticed, that this must be splintered off another series, I just didn't care enough to see what one it came from or desire to read that series. Since the shifters in this world are different than the normal/average portrayal of shifters in other authors' books, it was a bit disorienting trying to grasp the differences & make them "stick" in my mind to make the story work smoother. There's a lot of mention of Royals having 3 animals, and being immortals, about certain things like her being a red wolf, but nothing really explained enough to understand what that was about. The main characters, Mya & Rick are ok, I felt like there was a lot of background for them missing, that would have helped them feel less one dimensional. I wanted them to be more than they were. The epilogue was really crap, in my opinion epilogues are supposed to have info on the HEA (or whatever) for/about the couple in the story -either further into the future or a short distance, to give the closure for the couple. This takes place at Mya & Rick's wedding, but other than Mya leading Ilan out for a dance a the very end, we don't get any insight to the happy couple. Really -this was just a lead in for Ilan's story (book 2). I didn't enjoy this book enough to want to read book 2, especially after reading his lead in -in the epilogue, it made him undesirable to want to read about for me.
Freeing His Mate is the first book in the Shifter Affairs series, but is connection to Ms. Corrigan’s Shifter World universe. Mya is a female shifter with no rights and her world quickly tumbling around her. When she meets Rick, she thinks she’s just providing him a moment of happiness in the bar she works at, but she soon realizes that he means much more to her than she ever thought. But will their forbidden love survive her breeding partner’s bond and family?
This book is super intense, full of a lot of drama, world building, passion, and Rick and Mya steal the show. There’s a lot of themes of coming into your own power, realizing your own strength and potential, and coming to terms with a rough past to realize that it’s made you the best version of yourself. I thought sometimes this book was difficult to read through because of the lack of power that female shifters potentially have, but I loved the scenes where the females were able to fight for themselves and those they love. Mya, bless her, has such a hard past, but I love the hope and trust she’s willing to find when she begins to fall for Rick. Rick is someone you can depend on, one who fights for all that’s his, and I really enjoyed his character. I think that there felt like too much going on in this book, though, and I found myself getting distracted from the story by previous storyline and making sure that I wasn’t forgetting any important details. Otherwise, I enjoyed this book! I’m drawn to the characters in this story and things get set up for future books, too!
I read the "tame" version of Rick, the first of the Agents of Shifters Affairs from Ms. Corrigan's Shifter World (the second series she has set in this world).
Both have made mistakes, Rick and Mya - not mistakes so much, but more like life has given then pain and problems in their love lives. Mya is in an abusive (emotionally and physically) relationship and Rick has lost a woman he loved well, though not soulmate level. They have survived but are scarred.
I really enjoyed the adult emotions and problem-solving the two went through instead of the normal insta-love, insta-perfection normally found in a soulmate story. I did think there was a little too much of the "innocent-virgin" trope for a story where the woman already has two children and is expecting more; will we ever be out of the men-should-be-experienced and women-be-innocent-girls syndrome?
The thriller-agent part of the story line included a murder mystery. The paranormal world has a well-defined mythos already introduced in the previous series. And we got to meet tons of characters - some from the last series and some for the relationships for the future books of the present series; though not overwhelming - the author kept focus on the main couple.
A complicated world, a complicated romance, and the thriller portion getting enough attention so it isn't an add-on. A good story.
Picked up while free on Kindle as an incentive to buy the rest of the series.
Rick lost his mate forty years ago as well as his twin boys. She wasn't his true mate but Rick is a lone wolf who just rejoined Shifter Affairs to solve a murder. He never expects to meet his true mate or have a family.
Mya is mated to a weak shifter who took her before she was mature and against her will. Women mean nothing to him. He thinks they are weak and he wants nothing to do with her or their daughters. Mya meets Rick and things start to change for her. She may find a way to get rid of her mate and find out what it means to be loved and respected and not be treated as property.
I really like this book in the new series. Molly has a fairly large role in this book. Her advice saves lives but it's kind of scary since she is a very old soul in a young body. Ms. Corrigan writes about characters who can get behind and cheer for. Her books are hard to put down. There are twists and turns to keep you glued to the pages. I want to know more about Ella and if her true mate will ever step up to the plate. With each book, we get a bit more of the future of Molly and Megan. I am hooked and Ms. Corrigan has a new fan.
The Shifter Worlds created by Ms. Corrigan are ingenious and exhilarating. In her shifter world Shifter Affairs is to be avoided at all costs. This story focuses on Rick who is a member of Shifter Affairs working on solving a murder. Rick lost his breeding partner 40 years ago, and is only living half a life. When he meets his true mate he is appalled that she is mated and has children.
Mya was tricked into becoming a breeding partner for Todd. Her daughters are considered a “waste”, and the current pregnancy may result in greater danger if they are males. Mya is only required to see Todd on the night of the full moon; when she meets Rick she knows that interest in him could lead to both their deaths – all permissible by law under their current situation.
The “perfect” catch-twenty-two story, with brutal shifter laws, fated mates, and the willingness to die for your loved one. Another excellent shifter story, which I highly recommend!!
*** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book ***
I’ve learned that I’m a sucker for a brooding Gothic hero (in books – they’re a ton of work in real life). Rick is a true wounded warrior, in desperate need of a reason to keep going. Mya has been forced to make herself ‘small’ in order to survive, but she’s strong and fierce. All she needs is the freedom to show off those qualities. This book immediately captivated my imagination. From the very first page I was sucked into the story and was prepared to fight anyone preventing me from finishing it. This is a very unique perspective on shifter culture from everything I’ve previously read. I’m not really a fan of how very misogynistic their world is, but I appreciate that the author shows us heroes and heroines that are working to make a difference in that situation. This book has a very twisty plot that’s as much about the villain’s misdirection as it is about the romance between our leading couple. I can’t wait to dive back in and read more about this world. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.
This book was so good. I love visiting this world. Rick Lyall has been assigned to Shifter Affairs with a new partner. Uri is a Royal feline shifter and a stickler for the rules. These two are quite the partners, as they are so opposite they have just about everything covered. They're new case is to solve a murder that happened suspiciously. Mya sparks Rick's attention from the first time he saw her. She has a breeding partner and a set of twin girls. The Silverman men, Todd and his uncle Wyatt, have an archaic view of women and Mya is stuck with them. This case gets bigger and more complicated each day. I love Uri. He's all business and rules, but he finds ways to work the rules. I loved his reaction after he made the date with the waitress for information. This book has wonderful romance, action, a lunatic, and a happy ending. I am so excited for the next book for Ilan's story, as well.
Rick is an agent with Shifter Affairs and a past including his breeding mate.. May is his true mate but has been forced to be a breeding mate, has already got twin girls and is pregnant with twin boys by Todd. Todd's uncle is a dominant, a thief and sales drugs out of his diner. Rick and his partner Uti put the pieces of the puzzle together including murder, of his nephew, Todd and a cousin, Ben. With Todd home and the fact that the mate Mark is still open Rick is able to soul bond her. Jr's twin sons will be Rock's and one of them when he reaches his maturity will accept the Ammon pack Southington Megan. Meanwhile there is Sara and Ijal from the Black Widow that are true mates, he knows and is trying to leave town and Sara knows she's a attracted to him but doesn't know about shifters, she's human, and has taken a message for him that a package is to be delivered to him Saturday night.
First, the story is great. I loved it! I was really excited to get the next available books in series. As with most of the authors I follow loyally, I found this book in free Kindle books and if I like the storyline or style of writing I go buy the rest in the series, along with other books by the author. When I went to buy the next book, Ilan, I am told NONE of these books are available on Kindle. I just read the first one on that very format! This was so disappointing. This is my format, not $15 paperbacks or $22 hardbacks that I don't have space for, hard to travel with and reduce my book addiction money. I'm sure my one review or disappointment is not much in the grand scheme of this publisher/ author's day or pocket, but I would've supported this author and her other pen name with my money and reviews if it just didn't feel like a draw in to buy a higher priced version of the books I was interested in following.
Rick is a Special Affairs agent and he is just barely hanging on to his life until he meets a beautiful woman waitressing in the bar she served him a drink but there is something about her he is determined to have her but she didn't tell him her name he meets his new partner and when he sees the waitress again he realizes that he feels a lot more for her and she is also his true mate, he has to convince Mya who they are to each other. Mya feels something for this man but there is nothing she can do because she is in an abusive relationship with another shifter who hates her as she does him. Rick and Mya cannot seem to catch a break because it seems that someone is a step ahead but it cannot be her children's father. This is a romantic suspense. Adult. A good read. I was given a copy as a gift from the author. I am providing an honest review without obligation.
I have an addiction to this series! Obviously, I'm reading them out of order, but it just doesn't matter! I was drawn into the drama of the plot right from the beginning, I felt bad for Mya, but I still saw her strength. Rick was a little pathetic at the beginning, but he gets better, he grows on you. The atmosphere of the Council dynamics was toxic for women, so a lot of the passion I felt reading this probably stemmed from my ire being stoked with all the misogyny and oppression that Mya and to a lesser extent other women were faced with, in the book. the plot thickens when Todd and his Uncle show more of their vile selves out on the pages, and just when you think it's all good in the wolf hood, PLOT TWIST!!! I stayed engaged from beginning to end and can't wait to read Ilan's and Sara's story next! I'm going to try to read the rest in order, lol
A shifter romance story that gives you an emotional ride. This book shows us the shifters that live around and with us without us ever knowing. Their world is like ours but in so many ways it isn’t. The pack are all male driven. Once a male claims a female (sometimes against her will) she is now owned by him. And he can do anything he wants and their law will back him. This is what has happened to the main female in the story. She may have been taken and forced to have his children but she will never be broken. The main male will do anything to save her but will it kill him in doing so. This is a very intense story that will have you holding the edge of your seat until the end.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of the book.
This is the latest instalment in Nancy Corrigan's Royal Kagan shifter world series. Freeing His Mate is the first in the Shifter's Affairs series, but the underlying storyline is woven throughout, connecting all the series'. Rick meets Mya at the bar where she works and realizes she's his true mate, only to find out that she has been bonded to another shifter unwilingly. Rick will do anything to free Mya so they can be together. As he pursues his investigation, which involves her bonded breeding partner, he uncovers a secret about her and her unborn children that will change their lives. I love the common thread running through all of these shifter books and the recurring characters. I anxiously awayt the next in this series!
First few pages in and our female lead tells our male lead (who is drinking heavily) "It's not often a man with a death wish walks into my bar and makes me want to be the one to save him." Oh sweetie someone needs to have a talk to you about getting involved with an alcoholic. I found the dialogue pretty cheesy in places (see above). I was confused about the soul mates deal: Rick wasn't soul mates with his late breeding partner, but he gave her a part of his soul, well okay then. The premise of female shifters having virtually no rights is a little hard to swallow in modern society, and shifters are supposed to be secret but any number of people seem to know about them, so that was a bit contradictory. I did manage to finish it, but probably closer to one and a half stars than two.
It’s a decent shifter read but there’s just some things in the story that don’t add up. A lot of the time you’re left wondering how it came to be only to be revealed towards the very end. Then there’s the matter of statements being repeated. We get it he/she is your true mate. Then there’s talk of a male dominated shifter world and the lack of importance when a female shifter is concerned. Like are you trying to write an intro how to become a feminist or just repeating that males are at the top of the food chain. Then a lot of questions in regards to shifter affairs or the council are given fickle answers or none at all. This story needs fine tuning and a good editor.
Rick is still grieving forty years after losing his breeding partner. He copes by excessive drinking. Being an Agent of the Shifter Affairs keep him sane. He has given up on happiness until he meets Mya. She has been tricked in binding herself to a cruel partner who has no respect for the opposite sex. He believes in ownership and complete dominance.
Rick recognises who Mya is to him, but she is already taken. Will he be able to free her, and by doing so, save himself?
Rick and Mya have to navigate the many unfair and archaic legal issues. It's not a story for the faint hearted. The treatment of women is appalling, but the love and respect shown by some packs cancel the unsavoury attitude.
I was intrigued by the blurb so I wanted to give it a go! Firstly, there is a tiger on the cover. Although Uri can turn into a tiger I am assuming, I would have liked to see it in the story. (I like tiger shifters). The blurb I read also didn't match the book. The blurb said a century ago Rick had lost his breeding partner, but in the book it was 40 years.
These are only minor things and did not affect the flow. I loved how ready Rick was to risk everything for Mya. He quickly adopted her children and made them his own. I liked how it explored the mate bond and turned it dark, showing how bonds could be exploited and abused. The story flowed well and I would happily continue the series.

This book kept me awake all night reading it. Rick was a fantastic character that I enjoyed. He had lots of great points with the way he was with Mya. Mya herself was a likeable character that I also enjoyed. The story had lots of mystery and interesting secondary characters that I look forward to seeing more of. Great plot with some mystery as more and more get revealed throughout the story. Secondary characters were also well done. This book also had lots of chemistry with some sexy time to keep everyone happy with a HEA. I'll be looking for more books from this author. Loved it!! I am giving my voluntary honest review of a book I received from the author.
What can I say, Ms. Corrigan has done it again with a spin off of the Royal-Kagan series that will keep you glued to your seat. I really enjoy it when the worlds overlap, you find out such interesting twists and turns. Rick and Mya are fated mates that cross paths just when they both needed to be saved. This was well written, well thought out and very easy to read. The story flows well , has great characters as well was secondary characters, mystery, drama and humor. ( I just love the purse!!:)) A great start to a new series that I look forward to reading more of. I volunteered to read this story for my honest opinion
