Having fallen in love with this series through watching the anime, I’ve really come to love the similarities and differences but not only has this post Wethermon arc been learnt action packed it’s also been winding closer and closer to the last chapters so far made episodic which means excitedly the next volume will have some brand new content, I’m so stoked! Overall this volume later on does get a tad boring with its major in game town hall and planning for moving forward, but it really reminded me a lot of some lore slips I’d forgotten and getting another sneak peak at the other colossals has me giddy, I can’t wait for them specifically to fight that sea beast, idk why just seems amazing. 3.75/5
I skipped a few books in the series by accident of I never see it in the stores, but I can still follow along perfectly since the anime follows it pretty strictly except for padding out some scenes (mostly battle stuff). I even have the characters' voices (particularly the Professor) in my head, which feels better this way around than when I have my own voices in my head that don't match up when the anime comes out.
As a result, though, the manga doesn't feel like it measures up (despite coming first), because the anime is SO much better, exacerbated by the fact it's a story about video games, which are easier to 3-D render than to hand-draw.* The difference is a little less severe with a story like Witch Hat Atelier, where the original manga is GORGEOUS and the anime just kicks it up a notch.
So, despite REALLY liking the anime, I feel like I'm losing interest in the manga, at least as far as keeping it around when I have more interesting titles I'd like to hang onto. It's not a BAD series by far, but it's also a lot of KonMari-ing my shelves when I have a limited number of them. I'll still definitely look out for other volumes, but probably only if they're in the library (or... free library?? which NEVER happens).
Recommended for fans, NOT recommended for complete newcomers, based on the sheer volume of existing knowledge needed to even approach following the story. Also not really recommended if you love Emul—Sunraku is particularly callous about her in this volume. :(
*at least, in my experience, and definitely with the things like the crystal scorpions that EASILY must be a pain to keep consistent between hand-drawn panels vs. just having a 3-D model to clone and move around
An underrated aspect of this story is the inter-clan intrigue and the players that thrive within that structure. Players like Sunraku's rival and sometime rivel, Pencilgon, are natural political intrigue that are able to trade information and parlay it into power in the game.
It is handy having Pencilgon around. With her as the clan leader of their fledging clan, Sunraku is able to concentrate on just being the best gamer ever.
4.25/5 Another good volume and this one does a good job with plot progression. We meet a fascinating new character and the group starts working together with other clans. It feels appropriate that the story is delving more into the lore and worldbuilding aspects. We've seen hints of how extensive the game world is and I hope this starts further work in that direction.
This is a fun shonen to read. Sunraku journey through the game continues with the special mission to help Beelach obtain the skills to become an Ancient technologies smith - skills he needs her master if he is to use the treasure he won with his friends by defeating the tomb guardian.
