Karma Wilson grew up an only child of a single mother in the wilds of North Idaho. Way back then (just past the stone age and somewhat before the era of computers) there was no cable TV and if there had been Karma could not have recieved it. TV reception was limited to 3 channels, of which one came in with some clarity. Karma did the only sensible thing a lonely little girl could do…she read or played outdoors.

Playing outdoors was fun, but reading was Karma’s “first love” and, by the age 11, she was devouring about a novel a day. She was even known to try to read while riding her bike down dirt roads, which she does not recommend as it is hazardous to the general well being of the bike, the rider, and more importantly the book. Her reading preferences were fantasy (C.S. Lewis, Terry Brooks, etc…) and historical fiction (L.M. Montgomery, Laura Ingalls Wilder, etc…). Those tastes have not changed much.

Karma never considered writing as a profession because her mother was a professional writer which made it seem like mundane work. At the age of 27 she realized that she still loved well-written children’s books of all kinds, from picture books to young adult novels. By that time Karma was a wife and the mother of three young children. Trips to the library with her kids were a combination of emotions…a good book meant fun for all! But so many of the books weren’t what her children wanted to listen to.

Then a tax refund changed everything. With the money the family decided to invest in a computer. Karma was forced to learn to type. Combining her desire to make the expensive computer pay for itself, her new-found typing skill, and her love of children’s literature, Karma started writing for children. She wanted to put a few more good books on the library shelves and pay off that computer! Countless rejections and three years later Karma was finally accepted by book agent Steven Malk (who had already rejected her once, which she never lets him forget). Her first book, Bear Snores On, was released in 2002. The computer was paid for!

Since then Karma has had more than 30 books accepted for publication. Many of those are on the shelves of libraries and bookstores around the world. Her books have received numerous state and national awards, been translated into dozens of languages, and a few have made an appearance on the New York Times bestseller list. Karma sincerely hopes that her books bring joy to children and families everywhere.

Karma writes humorous, rhythmic picture books for the very young, and humorous and wistful poetry for the primary grades.

These days Karma lives with her handsome husband Scott, and her three not-so-young-anymore children, two dogs, two chickens and one cat on some modest but lovely acreage in NW Montana. Her hobbies include reading (of course), photography, baking, yoga, and a passion for Mixed Martial Arts.

I am feeling a bit under the weather myself... My throat is really sore and i am starting to get nose bleeds again which sucks because the last time this happened i thought i was dieing and ended up in urgent care for hours and hours.... Hey whenever you have had sixty nosebleeds in a week it gets pretty alarming and whenever your so weak you can't move then thats pretty bad to...... So was the trip to urgent care useful... Well to answer your question the answer is no...... Now moveing on with my review.
Bear Feels Sick by Karma Wilson was another adorable read that i more then loved! The pictures were tremendous! I asked many people if they had ever read the bear books and everyones answer was yes... Where have i been? How have you people read these books and i have not.....EVER? My kids will be reading and listening to me read these cute stories from the day that they are born all the way to college!
These books display true friendship... Bears friends never left his side for a minute as he was battleing his illness they were there to comfort him all the way threw... Offering him hugs, food, blankets, and lots and lots of love which is the number one medicine in my opinion. Friends are so dear to me and i love all my Goodreads friends and i want to thank all of you for the comments on other reviews and the laughs some of us have shared together...
This story rates a five star mark and the pictures were beautiful as well and the color really cought my eye so thats another five stars... Well done to Karma Wilson for her great.... No i should say splendid work! This is a number one reccomindation for all ylu little readers out there!

There is nothing worse than feeling ill, as Bear soon comes to learn. Thankfully, he has wonderful friends who want to help with many a remedy. Still, Bear remained sick throughout most of the book, at least until he was able to rest. When he woke and felt much better, he saw that his fellow nursemaids had come down with something, allowing Bear to offer his own form of TLC. Neo liked the story and read it alongside me. I was a tad worried when he sneezed repeatedly through the latter portion of the book, but that might be related to the fact that I recently finished a massive tome that had a 'plague' storyline.

Bear can't enjoy the lovely fall weather because he's achy, and has a stuffed up nose. Luckily he's got the best medicine of all - good friends who will care for him. I love the beautiful warm-toned illustrations by Jane Chapman.

Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman make a wonderful author/illustrator team. I just love the Bear books! This one is another sweet rhyming story about Bear and his friends. On a beautiful autumn day, Bear does not want to play with his friends because he feels sick. The friends come to help. Mouse offers moral support, Badger fetches water, Gopher cooks broth, Mole places cool compresses on Bear's forehead. Finally Bear drifts off to sleep, and when he wakes up he feels better...but now his friends have caught his cold and are feeling sick. It's up to Bear to care for his friends until they are well. A nice story of friendship and of repaying a kindness. The illustrations couldn't be more precious. Soft colors and animated, expressive characters, plus some beautiful fall scenery.

Autumn is near, and Bear falls sick. His amazing group of friends helps to take care of him. They try to nurse him back to health by covering him up with a blanket and bringing him tea. With all of his friends' help, Bear gets better! Unfortunately, now, all his friends are sick, but not to worry! Bear will take care of them!

I really love this series of Bear books. I love the lessons that it teaches children. It promotes a caring, respectful, and loving environment. I have also read Bear's Loose Tooth. In both books, Jane Chapman does an amazing job on the illustrations. So much detail, shading, and warmth- it adds a lot to the story. I also made a text-to-text connection while reading. This reminds me of a Caldecott Award-winning book name A Sick Day for Mcgee. It follows the same theme of the main character being sick and how his friend care for him. Definitely would check it out!

This is an endearing story about bear and the care and love his friends have for him and he for them. It helps children learn about 'being sick' and what to do about it and that it feels terrible but does not last forever. I enjoyed the rhymes and rhythms of the words in this gentle, relatable story.

The rich illustrations are expressive with interesting little details to find and are a perfect accompaniment to the text. They are beautifully done with a spectacular colour palette that suits both the story and the natural setting of the animals.

I will read other Bear books.

Text to self connection

Such a cute book. I remembered when on of the children had gotten sick in my house and was running a fever. They feel so sick, they don't want to be bothered and she slept a lot and I kept wondering why is she crying so much during the night and come for find out that she had a double ear infection and at night it had became worse due to the fact of pressure on her ear when she laid down at night and I didn't even know that. She even went to daycare and they never called me when she was there about the pain in her ears but to see her just not wanting to be bothered and crying just made me feel bad for her but after 10 days of antibiotics she was fine and back to herself.

Bear Feels sick! His friends want him to come out and play, but he feels too unwell to go. So all of his friends pitch in to help him feel better. They start a fire to warm him and feed him healing broth. They sing until he falls asleep. They watch over him until he feels better.

The illustrations are done in acrylic paint. They are absolutely adorable and colorful. The facial expressions are well done. The pictures give you a warm and fuzzy feeling.

I adored this book! The rhyming was simple and not overdone. It was just enough to convey the message of the story. The friends all gather around and soothe Bear. They don't tell him to buck up and get over himself. Instead they do everything they know how to do to make him feel better. But most importantly, they surround him with their caring. I love the surprise and funny ending.

Advertized for ages 3-8. I think ages 2-7 would highly enjoy this book. This story is perfect for a read aloud during illness.

I don't usually write reviews for children's books but I have a few I would like to post.

This is such a sweet story about what true friendship is about.

The title says it all. Bear does feel sick for most of the book. His friends come over and comfort him as best they can. I love how much thought is put into the words on the pages. The artwork is simply stunning.

My two boys love reading about Bear and he's definitely one of our bedtime story favorites. You cannot go wrong with a Karma Wilson book.

A beautiful compassionate story about caring for those who are sick. It also teaches children that though we get sick, we also get better.

Talking Points - Who takes care of you when you are sick? When have you been the sickest? Do you generally have good health or poor health?

Bear Feels Sick
by Karma Wilson
Bear Feels Sick is one of many Bear books by Karma Wilson. On an Autumn day Bear is alone in his cave with aches and a stuffy nose. He feels sick. His friends come over trying to get him to play. He tells them he is too sick to play. They check his temperature and discover he is running a fever. His friends want to help him. They bring him a blanket and make Bear all cozy, but he still feels sick. So they get Bear some water and cook him some soup and give him a wet cloth for his head. Bear still feels sick. His friends bring him some herbs and make him drink tea, but he still feels sick. The friends continue to take care of Bear and keep a close eye on him. Bear begins to fall asleep and when he wakes up he feels all better. Bear wants to play, but all his friends are sick. He tucks them in and takes care of them, just as they did for him.
All the Bear books send a great message about friendship. This book is great for preschool to 1st grade. Preschoolers are beginning to make new friends and learning how to interact with everyone. This particular Bear book shows children what true friendship should be like. Reading this book teaches the children how they should treat their friends and how their friends should be treating them.
The illustrations in this book are beautiful. I like how they are very realistic with a lot of attention to detail. Many children books have drawings that are very animated. However, this book the animals and the landscape all look very life like. The cover of the book goes along perfectly with the story. It shows Bear laying in his cave all sick and his friends rushing around caring for him. The cover draws the readers attention.

Summary: This book is about a bear that starts to feel sick and along the way his many friends try to help cheer him up and make him feel better. It is a book of friendship and the great relationships that you make that can make a lasting impact within one's life. This book is not just not about a bear being sick but the love, kindness, and joy people have among each other,

Personal Thoughts: I love this book so much because of the pictures that are within the book. This sets up the emotion that you read within about all of the bears ' friends coming together to help their friend in a time of need. I think this is really important today because of COVID and everything that is happening. We have to stick together and help others during this time.

How I Will Use: I think this a great book to help teach children about the importance of helping others friends or strangers. Not only does it have a good meaning behind it but the pictures within it are great. I think this book is just great for any person to read younger or older.

Summary: This fun rhyming book written by Karma Wilson tells the story of Bear and his forest friends nursing him back to care. The illustrations seem so whimsical and warm making the book inviting for kids. Bear aches and he shakes and he feels sick but his friends are with him the whole time. Then bear feels better and his friends begin to feel sick.

Analysis: I loved the illustrations in this book the colors are so warm and bring out the personalities of the characters also. I love the words and that the words rhyme making the book flow very easily. I love that the characters are portraying kindness and coming together in the forest.

How could I use in classroom: This book could be used to teach poetry. Another use for this book could be used to tell story's of when we get sick and who takes care of us. Another use for this book would be to discuss animals and give facts about them.

Olen kerrassaan hullaantunut Jane Chapmanin kuvituksiin ja Karma Wilsonin Kalle-karhun seikkailuihin! Huomaan harkitsevani vakavissani Kalle-karhun tarinoiden hankkimista omaan kirjahyllyymme, sen verran useasti olemme karhun tarinoiden pariin palanneet viimeisten kuukausien aikana.

Kirjan kuvitus on todella kaunista ja herkkää. Eläimet on kuvattu mielestäni realistisesti, kuitenkin lapsille sopivalla tavalla.

One morning Bear feels sick and cannot come out of his cave to play. His woodland friends are worried for him and go to great measures to care for him until Bear gets better. They wrap him up, make him some soup, and gather herbs. With patience and great care, Bear makes a successful recovery.

Rather short, but written in a small form of poetic verses, forms a sweet little story of a group of friends caring for one of their own. The pictures really take up the space as the entire setting is in Bear's cave, capturing the autumn glow. I am sure children will know what it means to have empathy and what to do when you feel sick from reading this book.

Browsing books to give my friends' children as gifts since I won't gift anything I haven't first read myself.

I have yet to find a Bear book that I don't just fall in love with from page one. In this rhyming story (the rhyming, by the way, is always perfection in these books), poor Bear does not feel well. Which child can't relate to that! But even better, we get a story based on empathy and caring for one another, as Bear's friends rally around him and try to comfort him until he recovers. My favorite illustration of them all is where Bear is finally starting to doze off. Another winning book from this collection.

Bear stories are always solid storytime bets. They are sweetly rhyming, easy for the kids to follow (and even finish lines) without being sing-songy. And the illustrations are always precious. Bear and all his friends are so expressive! And as a read-aloud, all the different friends can have such different voices if you want. I've pulled this one out for friendship and for being sick. It's also a great one for 'being kind.'

Read for Storytime, January 4th
Theme: Sick Days & Germs

Karma Wilson is a favorite for both our authors to read at Baby & Me and Storytime. Preschoolers love the illustrations and story of how Bear is sick and his friends take care of him. This book is just as wonderful as the other Bear stories.

I was kind of wondering where this book was going. I mean, it totally makes sense to have a book about getting sick (considering that kids are sick literally all the time) but it was also kind of depressing until he finally felt better. I did love the ending though, where the bear helps his friends who are now feeling sick with the same cold / flu / virus / whatever.

Bear's friends come and do nice things when he feels under the weather, and it's cute and nice while being true to the experience of feeling sick. And then there's a twist which is equally cute and nice.
Your kids might play sick after reading this, which means getting themselves and their dolls into bed and being very quiet.
We need more books like this one.

What a precious heartwarming book. I love this book so much I want to own it. Plus, I love how it rhymed so beautifully! It had such a wonderful flow with the words and the story. The illustrations are absolutely fabulous and adorable too. The bear's friends are so cute, helpful, and have such kind hearts. I love this book!

A cute picture book of friends helping out when Bear feels sick (it looks like a cold or flu). Shows true love and caring for each other.

I love the colorful quilt in all the illustrations.

Pretty clear that Bear contaminated all his friends, though. Might be an opportunity for classroom teachers or parents to talk about how NOT to share germs.
