Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist. García Márquez, familiarly known as "Gabo" in his native country, was considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century. In 1982, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

He studied at the University of Bogotá and later worked as a reporter for the Colombian newspaper El Espectador and as a foreign correspondent in Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Caracas, and New York. He wrote many acclaimed non-fiction works and short stories, but is best-known for his novels, such as One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985). His works have achieved significant critical acclaim and widespread commercial success, most notably for popularizing a literary style labeled as magical realism, which uses magical elements and events in order to explain real experiences. Some of his works are set in a fictional village called Macondo, and most of them express the theme of solitude.

Having previously written shorter fiction and screenplays, García Márquez sequestered himself away in his Mexico City home for an extended period of time to complete his novel Cien años de soledad, or One Hundred Years of Solitude, published in 1967. The author drew international acclaim for the work, which ultimately sold tens of millions of copies worldwide. García Márquez is credited with helping introduce an array of readers to magical realism, a genre that combines more conventional storytelling forms with vivid, layers of fantasy.

Another one of his novels, El amor en los tiempos del cólera (1985), or Love in the Time of Cholera, drew a large global audience as well. The work was partially based on his parents' courtship and was adapted into a 2007 film starring Javier Bardem. García Márquez wrote seven novels during his life, with additional titles that include El general en su laberinto (1989), or The General in His Labyrinth, and Del amor y otros demonios (1994), or Of Love and Other Demons.

I bought this spanish book online, and since I cannot pay much attention to details, I thought this was actually the book One Hundred Years of Solitude but turns out this is only 40 pages long and it's Carlos Fuentes talking about his journey with Garcia Marquez and how he got inspiration to write the book and vice versa.

But yeah, if I was really really really looking forward to read this book, after reading this one, i want it more!

To say I loved the book is an understatement. This book is beyond magical. The only problem I had with this book was the translation. I cannot imagine the reason behind this massacre of translation. How somebody can be so cruel and ruin the pleasure of reading Marquez's masterpiece? If your life lacks magic, you will find it between the pages of this book. And for those of you who intend on reading this book in Macedonian, let me just tell you it is better if you decided to learn Spanish than embarking on this 1000 days of torment endeavor in Macedonian.

The Buendías, one of the most important families in Latin American literature. A story that takes place in the hundred years of this family and that each member of each of the seven generations suffers in solitude. That is the premise of the novel, although this time to take advantage of the furore of his series on Netflix and be able to catch up with everything, I decided to listen to the audiobook instead of reading the novel again knowing that I would not give myself enough time to do it before the series.

In fact, I reached a little more than half by the time I saw the series, so if I managed to catch up at least with the first 50 years hahahaha.

I didn't remember the narrative so well, when I read it I was still a new teenager, I wasn't someone who understood this type of book in a complex way.

I have tried to resume the habit of reading, because I have gotten used to listening only to fiction podcasts.

I can't find a way to make this review, because the idea is that you read it and let yourself be immersed in the depths of the town, Macondo. In the Buendía family and that for me generation II and IV were the ones I liked the most, the last generations made me desperate for those decisions.

With this he left the last sentence that culminates the book:

This is, without a doubt, my favourite author.
100 Years of Solitude is a beautiful book that stays in your heart long after you finish it. From the 'time going around in circles', the symbolism of the repetitious yellow, the magical realism.... simply stunning!
Macondo and the Buendia's family is an amazing story I highly recommend as a must-read for everyone.

No volvería a leerlo

A beautiful book of intelligence and magic and far far too many words. I think a book without a classic plot and through-line is always in danger of stagnating between episodes. This one goes through so many episodes, and some of them are phenomenal, some merely good.

This book made me think of life in the big scope. How things repeat themsleves how there are some things that are unavoidable I noticed that nothing has to be realistic to make perfect sense.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is an absolute masterpiece of literature. This book is a stunning achievement in storytelling, weaving together the history of a family over several generations with elements of magical realism and social commentary.

One of the most impressive aspects of the book is the sheer scope of its narrative. Marquez creates an entire world with its own history, culture, and mythology, and he populates it with a cast of unforgettable characters. From the patriarch of the Buendía family, José Arcadio Buendía, to his great-great-grandson, Aureliano Buendía, each character is unique and fully realized.

The book's use of magical realism is also masterful. Marquez blends the fantastical elements seamlessly with the story, creating a world that is both recognizable and surreal. This technique adds a layer of depth to the book, allowing it to explore themes of love, death, and the cyclical nature of history in a way that is both poignant and thought-provoking.

Finally, the book's prose is simply beautiful. Marquez's writing is lyrical and evocative, capturing the essence of the characters and their environment in vivid detail. His use of language is both poetic and precise, drawing the reader in and immersing them in the world of the Buendía family.

In short, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a literary masterpiece that deserves its place among the greatest works of fiction of all time. Marquez's storytelling, use of magical realism, and prose combine to create a book that is both timeless and unforgettable. If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend that you do so as soon as possible.

Gabriel takes us to Macondo from the moment it is founded onwards, following the magical and difficult life of the the Colombian Buendía generations and presenting us along the way with multiple elements of Colombia's history e.g. liberals vs conservatives civil wars.
During the 100 years of the story, real life is constantly being challenged by superstitions and in some cases magic events demanding the reader to constantly adapt his/her vision of Gabriel words pushing the boundaries of our imagination.
It is specially beautiful to see how Gabriel tricks the reader in multiple times by showing us small bits of what each character future could look like without turning off the hope of going beyond their birth name destiny.
There are multiple metaphors and symbolisms between the Buendía family and Latin America that "Cien años de soledad" brings, but for someone that did not grow in Latin America and whose knowledge of their history is more limited, there are still a lot of elements that enlarged my knowledge of Colombia, my view of normal Latin America day-to-day life, my imagination and my understanding of the impact of certain social and economical developments like the arrival of the train to Macondo whose impact is way different than the arrival of the subway to a new suburb of an European capital...
Looking forward to visit Colombia, and put real colors to Gabriel's words

to be honest, the first time reading this book did not allow me a concise and precise analysis of this incredible book. I am re-reading it now to allow myself a second opinion.
The first time, my focus was on the injustices of a system and the things individuals face on a daily basis. This time around, my focus is more on the anti hero theme of the book. So my review is pending upon conclusion and the reading other reviews.
