The Surrounding Light

Rate this book
Two years of being an outcast in my pack, and I'm more than ready to escape.

Starting college is the ultimate chance to recreate myself, and I'm going all in. Hookup culture, parties, and maybe I can fit some studying in there too.

No one needs to know that when I shift, even other wolves are scared of me.

Finding out I have three fated mates was not part of the plan. With secrets of their own, nothing is certain, and when a tragic accident forces unspoken truths to light, it's all or nothing.

The Surrounding Light is a medium burn paranormal reverse harem romance with three delicious mates who fall hard for the MC (and maybe each other...)

This is a beautiful debut novel. Anna is such a fun and charismatic character. She has some trauma from her life in her home pack, who view her as an omen of death due to her deep black wolf form, with red eyes. College in a different state, with only her twin brother as a familiar face, seems like her best option for a new start where no one else knows what she is. Until a text from a wrong number leads to some fascinating new discoveries.

Anna meets three men who draw her in, and are drawn to her in return. They’re all hiding something but circumstances lead to secrets being revealed and changing everything.

I adore the characters in this book. Anna is bubbly and open. Despite her bad experiences from her pack, she remains friendly and learns to trust her instincts. Her relationship with her brother is sweet and funny, and she has established friendships outside of the harem. Her roommate and friend is genderqueer and uses they/them pronouns. They are a supporting character, but have more presence and agency than a typical background character, which I appreciate.

The guys, Bennett, Ash, and Logan, are all individuals with depth. They all have flaws, just as Anna does, and strengths that balance each or her out nicely.

I would classify this as a medium burn, because there are some extremely spicy scenes, but it takes some time to get there. This is almost an insta-love story, and although it’s book one, it ends on a fairly upbeat note.

I will absolutely be looking out for book two!

I loved this book! It was fast paced yet didn't seem to skip important details. It was funny, sweet, sexy, spicy and deep all in one and I loved it! It had the perfect mix of spice and plot and it was truly a joy to read! I'm a slower reader and tend to take about a week to read a novel but I read this in two days because I couldn't put it down! Loved the dynamic between all the characters (you will see when you read it 😁)! Overall definitely recommend this read!! 😍😍😍

I seriously loved this book. When I say I loved this book I mean I started it yesterday afternoon and I finished it last night. It has everything I love. PNR, RH, funny characters, good plot lines... And of course, smut haha. Possible spoilers ahead so I hid them as best as I could :)

Anna's personality grabbed me immediately. Bennett with his "adorkable" self. Ash with his intuitiveness. Logan with his charisma. Ugh. I love them all.

I truly cannot wait for more of this group. I also am looking forward to learning more about Aaron (like, hey, what's the significance of his fur color in comparison to his twins?!), Welly, and Georgie so I'm hopeful they will be sticking around as well. Bring on book 2!

PS. Ash, don't worry, I prefer chocolate sprinkles over rainbow too.

woah, i could NOT put this book down. finished it in two days, forgoing sleep and even reading during lunch breaks at work (risky given the nsfw scenes ;) )! im a big fan of fast-paced books and this one hit the spot with lots of character-driven action. the feelings each character felt were so tangible, relatable, and real even with the paranormal-ness of their world. while i find some paranormal books to fit into a certain mold, this one had quite a few nice twists with some creativity in building this specific world, making it unique. theres also some GREAT lgbtqia+ representation that i absolutely LIVE for!!! finally, you had no choice but to love the confidence anna carried herself with, sprinkled with just a few moments of vulnerability and insecurity. an overall great read, 10/10 would recommend.

If you want a book similar to Cricket, this one has very similar vibes!

From time to time there were info dumps, just a lot of information dumped on the reader (and the characters, who didn’t question any of it but just seemed to immediately accept it) where it felt a bit too sudden. But it’s a very interesting premise and I’m excited to see more of the world and the supernatural creatures in it.

Then on to the guys! While I would class it as medium burn (because the sex scenes only start about halfway through) there is definite attraction and feelings before that. The guys are all very cute and I’d love to get to know them better in the next books! Their communication skills could be better but they’re working on that.

I gave this book three stars because it has potential however the plot was lost often and also the issues that the book brings up didn't have a very good flow to them. How she found her mates. How the mates found each other. How they discovered what branch of supernatural they were. Just it didn't flow together. But there is potential. Also I absolutely positively hate it the ending. I'm just being honest.

good read

It was a good but but found there were issues when Anna referred to her room mate as they or them. Her only roommate was Georgia so it became a little difficult to have a smoother reading experience. Overall though I did enjoy reading the book and look forward two the second book. I would have given it a 3 1/2 but couldn’t get the half mark to work.

DNF at 81%. I tried so hard to like this book and give it a chance—and I got most of the way through it. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t take it anymore and since it couldn’t keep my interest I figured there was no point in forcing myself to finish. My biggest issue was just how shallow everything felt: “witches are extinct! Oh you’re a witch? Cool!”, “dryads don’t exist. Oh you’re a dryad? Cool!”, “I am completely inseparable from my twin. But I’m going to forget that he exists for most of the book”, “I know I have two mates already, but how nice of you two to force me to kiss your friend because I want him as a mate too! Oh, but you aren’t actually okay with me having multiple mates? Better spontaneously decide you are okay with it because it feels wrong otherwise!” Just. No. The lack of any real depth or character development is what killed this for me.

Wow! What an incredible debut novel! Seriously major kudos to Sienna, I am so impressed.

This book was everything promised and more. I loved it!

😂 A funny FMC - ✔️ I don’t usually like the whole impulsive thing but Anna was the perfect balance of impulse, compassion, heat and hilarity

🔥 Fast burn - ✔️ Perfect amount of heat and everything felt super organic which can be hard to achieve in RH.

💕 Fated mates - ✔️✔️✔️✔️ I am such a sucker for fated mates and I love it even more in the RH context, especially when the mate bonds extend beyond the heroine with other members 🥰

🐺 Paranormal shenanigans - ✔️ The mythos in the story is familiar but still unique enough that it doesn’t feel overdone, there were some elements that were clearly original too which was awesome.

👨‍❤️‍👨 MM in the harem - ✔️ I cannot gush about this part without spoilers so I will just say: *unintelligible girly squeals of delight*

🤭 Emotional character arcs - ✔️✔️ This was done SO well. Everyone had -something- that they worked on in the course of 366 pages and it wasn’t rushed or drawn out, it again felt really organic. And the way the story ended it could honestly end there and be an HEA but I also really want to know what happens next lol

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ representation - ✔️ they/them character without any awkwardness or needing to explain non-binary; they just were!! Lesbians! Bisexuals! Polyamory! We love to see it! 🥰

Again, I’m really impressed. Sienna Swift will be an author to watch for sure. I can’t wait to read the next book 🤩

.

Also, this doesn’t reflect on the book (and isn’t reflected in my review) but does reflect on the author and I feel like she deserves the recognition : as an ARC reader I had the privilege of reading before the release (tomorrow!!!) and the format sent initially had some wonky affects from the distributing platform — I emailed the author about it as it was an accessibility concern that I didnt want to affect her release and she got back to me almost immediately promising to check into it and offering to send a different format. As a disabled reader this meant everything to me. 💙

Dnf - 71% then skimmed to the end.

The writing and storyline were not bad. I'm having a hard time with little incidentals that are giving me anxiety. If I was in another head space right now my experience might have been different.

Here are my reasons for needing a break:

1. Real world political ideologues kept being slipped in. I honestly don't have any issue with correct pronouns or people who think climate change deniers are dumb, but I read to escape the world and when these things are slipped into the story it takes me out of my happy space.

2. I am not a fan of rh reading more like polyamory. Feels like cheating to me. I honestly wish this wasn't a thing for me because I'm seeing it more and more in rh books.

3. I suspect her twin brother, who follows the "old religion" which has been presented as a cult, will end up betraying her and her group. And we're full circle back to that feeling of betrayal.

** So for my own sanity ... I must step away until I get my external anxiety under control. **

*** Spoiler ***

69%
So two of her mates just had a sexual experience together and then decided to keep it a secret ... I HATE anything resembling cheating and this might have pushed that line too much for me. I think I have to take a break.

* If you label something RH it needs to be centered around the female or it needs to be labeled something else like polyamory (imo).

** I get that m/m is excused from being labeled cheating in these types of books, which I don't understand. Imagine if it was a female mate and a male mate of hers that experimented on the side and decided to keep it a secret. I can guarantee this would be called out for cheating. I don't mind m/m play when they are altogether, but I hate this new trend of independent relationships forming within the group. And before you tell me it was labeled m/f/m/m this encompasses both of the scenarios I just mentioned.

I Need Book 2 B/C I Read This in 4 Hrs…

I don’t write many reviews, but I felt like this book needed one. The slow build of not only the relationship, but of the characters themselves is so refreshing.

One refreshing thing to read is how honest the college sex life is. Not everyone is out “whoring” themselves around, but a lot of people, like Anna, do go about trying to find themselves in college & they do that through sexual relationships.

Reading Anna‘s relationship with all three of her mates slowly grow, with the common insecurities that normal monogamous relationships have, is also something I haven’t read a lot in RH or Polyamorous books.

*** CONTENT SPOILER BELOW ***
***** PLEASE STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN’T READ BOOK YET ****

I wouldn’t necessarily classify this book as an RH so to speak, because of the additional relationship that occurs within the harem. Revers harems are Why choose for the girl only & therefore, shouldn’t have other MM relationships within since there is another relationship between Ash & Logan, I would classify this as a Polyamory book since both Ash & Logan are having a relationship with each other & Anna, while Anna is also having a relationship with Bennett (making it a MMFM = Poly not a FMMM = RH)

All I’m gonna say next is that there better be a second book coming out soon because I absolutely need to know what happens next!!!

Sienna’s debut novel was a sweet and light read that I dived into between heavy books. This is a “Why Choose” paranormal romance with three mates and a girl who stands out and has experienced rejection for being different ( large black wolf with red eyes = symbol of death to her community).

I found the dynamic between Anna, Bennett, Ash, and Logan was delightful and layered as they all came in with clear and distinct back stories that influenced their world. I also liked how Anna approached interactions with others who showed bias towards her differences.

‘[Anna]: I love you but you really hurt me. Give me some time?’

There is spice in this book that I found pleasant and well done - I also appreciate how it didn’t just jump into “the final act” with them - I would say medium to fast-burn in this case. The romance is insta-love.

There is representation in the dynamic and with side characters that was great to see. The were not simply thrown in for diversity but added to the story by supporting the characters and their journeys

In terms of the world - I felt the world building was a little less than I was hoping for. It is teased and introduced but the focus for this initial book is the relationships so I hope to see it grow.

Overall, if you’re looking for a light paranormal read with feels then this is a great option! There is a slight cliff-hanger in this book but it is set as a HFN so the wait is bearable for me.

In the first book, in what I hope will be a several book series, we are introduced to Anna, a wolf shifter who was pretty much a pariah since she shifted the for the first time when she was 16. Her sifted form is a black wolf with red eyes, a symbol of death, or so she’s been told for the last couple of years. Though the college she ends up it, isn’t specific for supernaturals (at least we aren’t told it is), she ends up connecting with quite a few, and her world expands beyond what she ever knew existed. Bolstered by her human/banshee mate, her wolf/witch mate and her shape shifter mate, she navigate what the color of her coat actually means. This is a sweet story. Anna is a bit quirky, which I love. Her guys are fun. I feel like this book was more of a prequel and was setting us up in the world rather than a first book in a series. There really wasn’t an antagonist in this one, it was just a sweet intro to Anna, her background, and her discovering what she was, who her mates where and felt like it was setting up to what she could do. I’m looking forward to what comes next for sure. I felt the book was well written. I’m hoping we see more into Anna’s brothers, and perhaps why the supernatural congregate at the college. I’m super curious where the story will go from here.

I really enjoyed this debut book by Sienna Swift! It was super cozy, light and sweet! DEFINITELY a great palate cleanser after a darker read.
This was a college PRN RH. I really liked our main character, heroes and even our side characters!
Anna, our heroine, is a wolf shifter and the black sheep😉 of her pack. She’s been ostracized for years for being different. She meets 3 absolute cinnamon rolls of guys and they discover that everything may not be as it seems. At this point my favorite it Logan- I love good golden-retriever energy. But Bennetts shy nerdyness and Ashes slight grumpiness were fun too💙 Also, can I be besties with our MC Anna?! She’s so spunky, I loved it!
If you’re looking for a low angst, sweet, sexy, easy read- I’d reccomend this book for you!
No harsh cliffhanger but this is book 1 in a series and the story is just getting started!
I also wanted to mention that this book has tons of great queer representation and seemed to put alot of emphasis on consent prior to sexy scenes👌

-RH
-PNR
-college age/ NA
-MM
-Book 1 in a series
-Safe
Would reccomend!👍

This is a nicely balanced and creative story. The plot is interesting and something a little different from your typical shifter RH. There is a decent mix of plot and spice, it doesn’t feel like a slow burn- I’d say it’s a medium. We’re left with enough questions to tease us for book 2, but no cliffhanger. I generally think this was well done and is a good example of this sub-genre. I liked the characters and felt like the pacing was good as well.

I’m surprised this is a debut novel and I didn’t rate it more graciously because of the fact. I’ve read a lot of indie published debut novels in this exact genre and this is absolutely one of the better ones. It’s definitely on par with stuff you’d see from more seasoned writers of PNR/Shifter RH.

interesting

The storyline is interesting. The characters are funny and have good chemistry. I think for this being the beginning of a series it was ok. It felt like an introduction of sorts and just the beginning. So hopefully there is more to come and this is not just the only book. So I do look forward to seeing what this author comes up with. How the relationships and secondary characters all come together. I feel like this could become a great series. Stand alone it was ok but like I said I feel like it was like an intro of a sort and I so look forward to what comes next.

awesome book

Ok I need the next book . Her parents and her pack are some hoity-toity jerks that need a wake up call . I don’t know if I trust her twin I know he loves her and fallowed her but I also think he drank the kool aid because he’s very judgey sometimes yet he’s doing things I’m assuming are against his religion. Logan is sweet but I think his dad really screwed with him and people not wanting him but he’s awesome. Benny needs to talk , speak up if something makes him uncomfortable because it’s only going to hurt him and his relationship with the others. Ash just needs to be more confident in everything in the relationships he has .

It was alright.

While I liked the idea, and the general plotline.. it was just an okay book.
Plot: slow and didn’t really go anywhere. No big bad, or ultimate goal here except to heal souls.
Characters: the guys all seemed the same but had their own struggles. The MFC was just a bit too positive.
The brother was forgotten about the second she met her mates.
Ending: very rushed.
I dunno.. I just wanted this book to be over since it was kinda boring. I doubt I will pick up a sequel.

You would probably really like this book if you like smut with a spice of plot. Or low threat plots. Very sweet and happy book. Just not my usual preference.

Amazing read!

This was such an amazing debut and I can’t wait to read more of this series! I love all things shifters and fated mates and this book had such a different and fresh way of presenting these. It’s great to get to see as Anna and her guys get to know each other and build their relationship, while at the same time seeing how each of them begin to evolve more as individuals. Also loved to see how they are helping each other understand more about their powers and help expand them.

Sweet, RH, MFMM, College, Mystery

A quiet beginning to college, Anna and her twin brother leave their home pack. Anna is not an ordinary shifter and has always been treated different. In college, she finds her fated mates and starts to figure out her purpose in life. There is really no drama, this book is a path of discovery and learning that there are more supernatural beings out there besides just shifters.

If you are looking for sweet, no drama with a bit of spice, then this is for you!

Such an enjoyable book! It is well-paced and it was really hard to put down once I started reading it! I felt the relationship between Anna, Bennett, Ash, and Logan developed individually and as a group in such a believable manner. I liked that there were some bumps in the road with their relationships and they had to get lots of big feelings out in the open. Loved the LGBTIQ+ representation, so well done! If you enjoyed the Cricket Kendall series, you will enjoy this one. It has the same sweet, romantic but spicy dynamic to it! Definitely recommend picking this one up!!

great debut novel

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are very likable and the world building was well done.

Anna and the guys relationships were fun to see grow and I am excited to see where they go!

I loved that there wasn’t a cliffhanger but there are enough open questions that I am really looking forward to the next one!

Book was good. Had a great plot but was confusing at times. It drove me crazy when she kept referring to the roommate as "they, their, them" when it was only one person that was human! It was distracting and confusing.

Ending could have been better! There was to much inter monolog that could have been avoided.

To much other stuff that didn't need to be in the book at all!

I got this book as part of the two southern smuts reading challenge. I loved it so much. It’s paranormal reverse Harem, and I loved how confident Anna was even though her pack let he down. I was disappointed in Aaron a little bit when it came to his relationship with Anna. Bennett, Logan, and Ash were all big softies and total nerds. I hope there will be a continuation to this book.

I liked the premise behind this book.

- Paranormal RH
- Fated Mates
- M/M in RH
- Loveable FMC
- Males that gave the impression of: Alpha, Beta, Nerd

I felt the struggles were either glossed over or too easily solved. I loved Anna’s bubbly personality. Even the boys. Great characters. Great world being build, but would have liked more detail.

I will read book 2, because I want to know what will happen next.
