Wrath & Rain #1-3

Wrath & Reign: Complete Series

Rate this book
The Demon King crossed over to our world looking for something that was stolen from him. What he found was me.

It used to be that the president was the most powerful person in the country. That all changed when Wrath came to our world. He’s more powerful than anything we’ve ever faced.

Now there are websites dedicated to worshipping him. Countless internet memes about how ridiculously gorgeous he is. And yeah, I can admit he’s fine as hell. But he’s a villain to end all villains. There’s no way I’m falling prey to that.

That is until I accidentally cross paths with the Demon King and he demands I kneel at his feet. For a second, I almost do. Being around him is...consuming. But dying is better than surrendering and I refuse.

Except when Wrath turns his dark, dangerous power on me...it doesn’t work. And now the villain is looking at me like I’m the enemy.

I manage to get away, but word quickly spreads -- I’m somehow immune to the Demon King.

Now Wrath is hellbent on destroying me and those who want to destroy him are hellbent on using me.

I’m no heroine. And I’m certainly no villain. But if I’m going to survive, I have to play the game. If the Demon King wants a fight, he’s going to get one. If only I could stop falling into his bed long enough to destroy him.

Wrath & Reign is a villain enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance trilogy. You can expect lots of tension, action, twists and hate kissing, and a villain you love to love. Please check the author's website for TWs.

DNF

I could not finish this book. The female main character is absolutely horrible. She lacks any sort of moral character, constantly breaking promises, listening to his enemies and betraying the demon king multiple times. She takes no responsibility for her actions, she just explains it all away because the demon king is the villain.
There is also some woke LGBT propaganda throughout the book. There is the cliché best friend who is gay with multiple scenes of him with his boyfriend having tragic language. There is negative comments about old white men, and powerful men with money. It wasn't anything that added to the story or furthered the story along. Just another author trying to preach her ideology instead of writing art.

For being a three book omnibus and over 640 pages (on Kindle), I devoured it in no time.

Very fast paced plot, easy to follow world-building and magic system.

Enemies to lovers - you know I’m a simp for it. The tension and spice between Wrath and Rain was *chefs kiss* - and the dirty talk 🥵 Daddy Wrath indeed. I too fell in love with the villain. Who doesn’t love a man with shadow/darkness hands.

I absolutely loved Gus and Adam - seriously wish I had those guys in my life.

If you love paranormal romance and are looking for a book/series to get you out of a reading slump, this one will do it!

This is a great, spicy, enemies-to-lovers paranormal/fantasy romance. I enjoyed it, even though the main FC was quite annoying and betrayed Wrath far too many times.

DNF. Rain Low has a deservedly near fatal case of stupid. With a good editor there is a salvageable single book here, but as it stands the incredibly weak protagonist and droning plot make this a don’t bother as a trilogy. It wants to set up Wrath as a villain, but other than telling me he’s the villain on every third page he never does anything particularly villainous. Frankly, the gullible and duplicitous Rain is a better candidate for Bad Guy. Never once does she bother to contemplate an action, question a statement or consider a consequence. Since she is the only POV character we have only her whining and lack decision making are available to break up the copy and paste smut. I didn’t even make it to the third book but I assume Wrath turns off his brain and dooms himself to an infinite lifetime of her idiocy.

content warnings: attempted sexual assault, blood play, and captivity.

while i'm, as of writing this review, reading jade war by fonda lee, i needed something not as heavy in between. this was an... interesting distraction.

the first third of the book started off relatively well. i was engaged with the plot. it read really fast and i was just blazing through it. however, the more it went on, the more i just didn't like it. firstly, the most glaring issue for me is the characters not having any chemistry. their dynamic is very repetitive and it didn't go anywhere till it was forced in the last third of the book. there was no sense of development for their relationship that felt earned. enemies to lovers dynamics are difficult to perfect; however, there is a line. the mmc hardly ever showed vulnerable sides to him and was consistently harsh towards the fmc. i was actively rooting against their relationship from happening.

secondly, the plot progression was sloppy. while there was set up for plot points with foreshadowing, the outcome felt really messy and rushed. this could've been fixed if this was elaborated further into deeper detail. additionally, it lead into tropes that i thought were poorly executed or that are just my personal pet peeves. (minor spoiler ahead)

overall, i was underwhelmed with this book. if this was written in a different way, i could see this being better.

The writing was pretty good, obviously! however... the main female character just did not click with me. She was just bland. She never seemed to think through her actions over and over and it made me think she was just too stupid to live.

This book is all three of Nikki’s Demon king trilogy into one book & I have thoughts.

3/5 stars, 3/5 spice. 18+ and lots of violence.

Book one is called Ruthless Demon King I would say that the start was very intriguing. I had an interest in the world and a defiant FMC really hooked me in. The initial greeting of characters was fast paced and filled with magic, much like Nikki St Crowe’s other books!

Rain was thrown into a completely different world when she refused to bow to Wrath, the plot develops from there. The rest of the book actually felt like whiplash and was slightly frustrating for me. Rain would be extremely problematic and brash, then immediately do a 180° when she got even the slightest sense of intimacy (if you can even call it that).

The rest of book one and almost all of book two I was just confused if we were ever going to get romance? Or even a game plan to the conflict resolution? Wrath was violent and easily pissed off, and Rain was a brat and selfish for majority of the book, she made these irrational decisions that made me want to scream.

The side characters, mainly her mom Sunny and Gus, seemed to have these rose colored glasses the entire time and did not see anything wrong with what Rain was doing. There was absolutely zero accountability for the FMC, just an incoherent amount of i support you. Which, isn’t the worst thing but I was definitely taken back by their “i’m chill af gay best friend and I’m a cool mom” demeanor.

There was a lot of dialog in this what felt immature and more like a casual conversation rather than a novel. Some words would actually have extra letters to drag out the dialog like “okayyyy” and that just made it feel too rushed.

The saving grace was book three when we finally saw some maturity and emotional growth between the two MC’s. I think if you’re a fan of the rest of Nikki’s books read this one too, it just was not my favorite that she’s ever written.

This was a booktok recommendation and overall I was pleasantly surprised.

I do think they should’ve kept it as multiple books. There was a looot crammed into one book. Either multiple books, or even better, a good editor. The plot was interesting and it’s what carried this book for me, bc the characters were heavily lacking. There was almost no chemistry between the fmc and mmc. Also some of the physical interactions between the two of them were very unsettling and that’s what lowered my score. I understand this is a fantasy enemies to lovers and the MMC was supposed to be a villain but he was physically violent with her even after they were intimate. I could maybe explain assault away in a fantasy world where the characters first meet and they both have powers, but this wasn’t the case here. And it felt really personal and uncomfortable

Wrath backhands me. I slam to the floor, the air knocked out of me. He appears above me and takes a fistful of my shirt, yanking me to my feet as I gasp for oxygen.

I was full on rooting against them and kept thinking/hoping they didn’t end up together

Enjoyed the story but I did the audiobook and the voice the narrator used for Wrath made it very difficult to get lost in the world. It was incredibly stiff and didn't really represent the powerful force that Wrath was supposed to be. Kind of took some of the magic out of it.

“If you bow to me, dieva...then I will bow to you. My queen. Forever and an eternity.”
Wrath & Reign, Nikki Crowe

♡ Paranormal Romance
♡ Enemies to Lovers
♡ 3 books in one

A demon king, a human woman, twists, secrets, and ALL THE SPICE. Wrath & Reign is a must read if you love paranormal romance with a MMC that says things like: “Get on your knees.” I mean, do I need to explain any further because that line is top tier.

With chemistry, tension, and a sexy af villain, Wrath & Reign is pure addiction.

The only reason I’m giving it 3/5 stars was because some of the one liners were not in my tastes, it felt a bit insta-love, and I wasn’t connecting to the FMC as much as I would have liked.

But overall, I really enjoyed this villain paranormal romance.

This book contains the trilogy in one so I’ll break down each book and my overall review.

Book 1 - This book really pulled me in. The drama, magic and impossible situation created by the plot left me eager for the second book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book 2 - There was a larger sense of realism in this book. As Rain spent the book trying to cope with her new reality and the theme of betrayal became prominent. This book created the scene for the final book but I wasn’t as enthralled with the first until it reached its cliff hanger ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book 3 - Rain finally comes into her own and this is where the 2nd book starts to make more sense but the start had my really hating Wrath. He does redeem himself in the end and without too many spoilers it’s the perfect ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

How is this series not more talked about?! I literally spent 10 hours on the edge of my seat listening to this audio and getting lost in another world with these two 🔥

Reign has always just lived a normal life. She’s a photographer in a small town that was recently invaded by the demon king. No big deal. Until she comes face to face with the king, Wrath, and give him a run for his money. In a way no one else has Reign refuses Wrath which only makes him want her more. As the two have a cosmic battle of tug-o-war the plot thickens and not only do Wrath’s powers seem to affect Reign, she seems to have a little magic of her own.

This was such a complex story with such fantastic character growth and world development I found myself completely lost in the audio. Both Wrath and Reign were such stubborn personalities but ended up being each other’s weaknesses as well. The twists and turns in this book just kept coming and I had no idea which way was up for a while or what was going to come of it. This was a wild, wild ride and just solidified what a fantastic author Nikki is that she can create these magical realms where demons, witches and vampires all coexist (unhappily).

This is such an underrated series and I highly highly recommend if you’re looking for a new paranormal romance. This was like True Blood x Twilight x Constantine but with a grumpy demon MMC and a bad ass FMC.

Other than Hot Vampire Next Door season 5 I have officially completed the entire St. Crowe backlist….so I’m gonna need ya to write a little faster Nikki….😇

This is looking like a DNF at 80% (I'm onto the last book).

I really loved the premise here, and as a photographer I felt an extra connection to the FMC and her mum that I just wish had been explored more.

But unfortunately the FMC's complete lack of agency is grating on me harder and harder as I get deeper into the trilogy. To make matters worse, when she has even an inkling of control over the plot she engages in really dumb decisions that are so painful to read 😬

This book had a heap of potential - demons, vampires, witches etc in the modern world, with a demon king having merch and insta followers?? I love it. But the plot was just a complete mess. There was so much telling with little to no showing. There was absolutely no description of what Wrath was doing that had so many people fighting him. There was no background given that would help us to understand him. Meanwhile the FMC seemed completely out of control when it came to her lust for him, which I might have accepted if we'd been given some explanation for why?

Anyway, I've been trying so hard to push through and read this, but it's just reminding me of another series I read which I enjoyed so much more, so I'm thinking I'll stop here and reread that instead 😅

Two stars, don't recommend.

Nikki St. Crowe, I must say, this three-book omnibus was an absolute feast for the senses, despite its hefty 640-page count on Kindle. The pages melted away under my eager eyes as the story unfurled at a breakneck pace. The plot was intricately woven with a world-building and magic system that were both comprehensive and yet straightforward to comprehend.

The classic trope of enemies turned lovers was masterfully executed here - it's a narrative device that I've always had a soft spot for. The simmering tension and palpable chemistry between Wrath and Rain were simply irresistible - as delectable as a perfectly cooked dish from a master chef. And let's not shy away from the saucy dialogue; Wrath certainly knows how to turn up the heat with his words!

I found myself, much to my surprise, falling head over heels for the villain of the piece. There's just something undeniably captivating about a man who wields shadows and darkness with such finesse.

Gus and Adam, too, quickly became dear to my heart - their characters are so endearing that I sorely wish they were part of my real-life entourage.

For those who have an affinity for paranormal romance or anyone seeking a series capable of pulling them out of their reading rut, look no further! This omnibus will do precisely that! Nikki St. Crowe, I can't help but express my adoration for this series; its delicious spice left me craving more.

Review:

I guess this is a review on a single book and a series at the same time? this is the trilogy within the one book.

The character developments within this is minimal but there are some interesting plot twists and setting developments that captived me. It reminds me of Scarlett St. Clair’s A Touch of Darkness series and I wonder if it is a very lose Hades and Persephopne retelling. I have listened some of Nikki’s previous work and I think this is slightly better written and developed than her Vicious Lost Boys Series.

Overall I enjoyed it, however the FMC was rebelling just for the sake of it. Sometimes there was a good reason but more often she didn't stop to think it through or hear the other side out before acting. The MMC was also a bit insufferable at times since he wanted her to be an inferior instead of an equal just because he feared being powerless. Fortunately, they both more or less overcame their flaws

I actually really enjoyed this book and will probably reread in the future. I usually find Nikki St. Crowe's books lacking something, whether it's a good editor or an extra 150 pages, but this book felt like the perfect balance of storyline, spice, and drama.

A cool story with two stubborn characters that can't keep their hands off each other.
Plot
Classic - human that may not be human and is irresistible to the non-human- troupe but well done and creative.

Characters
This would be my one complaint. It may be the POV issue with it only being first person for the FMC but I felt like everyone else was a little underdeveloped. I wanted more of what the MMC was thinking to help me understand the character arcs better.

Romance
Insta-sex but slow burn romance that is full of misunderstandings and stubborn love interests.

Spice - 3/5
Open door, explicit descriptions and language with mostly vanilla sex. Spice that had almost nothing to do with plot or character development but was not a distraction from the overall plot.

Overall good - Creative story that was interesting. I like that the FMC was strong and confident but also just a photographer from a small town.

Overall bad - Somewhat shallow character development but the overall tone of the characters was clear and consistent all the way through.

Troupes -
Deamon/human
enemy to lovers
morally grey MMC
fated mates/magical mates
inherited magic
vampires
witches

These are the type of novels that the author writes so THEY enjoy reading it. The writing was actually really good. Of course, there are some parts where I cringe (a given with these types of stories) but I read it really fast so kudos. Plot was meh, FL kept getting herself into these situations and being shocked at the outcome. I think if she made some better choices the book could have been shorter but where is the fun in that, I suppose. The whole dominance thing has been overdone I think. It’s a bit tired but all in all, I think this might be the highest rating I’ve given this type of book.

...WHEW, I'm glad that's done with...

The characters were unlikable. The FMC was giving me whiplash with her decision-making and her actions. The MMC was frustratingly egotistical. The writing could've been better in terms of the pacing and the smut scenes—those scenes felt so jarring and oddly placed. The writing was great during the action scenes though, but other than that...this wasn't it!
Finally, the narrator Bridget Bordeaux...ugh, I hated how she voiced Wrath 😭 this was just a mess to me 🫡 and I'm glad I'm free. The execution was rough.

DNF, but I really, really tried. I don’t want to leave a rude review because I know how hard authors work on their books, but I didn’t enjoy anything about this book. Every character is so static, the plot is predictable, and it tells a lot more than shows.

Dnf with an hour to go. I've accepted I don't care enough to listen to the ending. I loved book one but got tired of Wrath in books 2 and 3. He didn't have enough redeeming qualities for me to keep wanting to read about him.
