Wedding bells turn to sour notes for Emerald O'Brien. Her fiancé is wounded by gunfire, her ex-husband becomes the prime suspect, and her maid of honor is being stalked. Now it's up to Emerald to divine if the incidents are related.

All the elements of the previous books are present again and I am here for it. It still has the "Oh my God, why dont you see what is going on!" vibe, but I still liked the story. Probably because I like the characters and the town.
I am glad that the relationships between the sisters gets better, and that Roy finally shows some humanity and growth. Not that much, but that is more realistic. People just don't change overnight and when they do, they don't change much. A little change can however make a huge difference.
All things considered I enjoyed this series, flaws and all.
When I started reading the book, I really didn't enjoy it or the characters. I think my biggest problem is, that what is obvious to the reader takes the characters so long to realise and there is no reason why for it. I then took a break form the book and when I went back to it really got into it and enjoyed the characters... but then sadly the same thing happened again. That is the reason for me down-rating to 3. A seasoned detective would know better, no matter how close they are to the events.
(Sorry for any bad grammar in this review- I hardly slept last night, which is my excuse and I am sticking to it.)
Fifth in the Chintz 'n China cozy romantic paranormal mystery series and revolving around a village witch and tea shop owner, Emerald O’Brien. The focus is on Em’s wedding plans.
My Take Hmmm, I’m thinking I need to get into yoga . . . Em is reporting good results. Okay, she’s also cut back on sugar . . . sigh . . . always a negative. We learn this and more through Galenorn’s use of first person protagonist point-of-view from Em’s perspective.
Well, Em has learned to accept that she’ll have to deal with otherworldly visitors. She and Joe have also been decking out the old Brunswick house lot (A Harvest of Bones, 4).
I’m not liking Rose. She has a snit fit about not being Em’s maid of honor even though she’s been so out of touch with Em. As for Kip, his lack of forethought does make life so “interesting”, especially when he “invites” his lousy dad to Em’s pre-wedding party.
Joe is one sweetheart of a guy. He enjoys cooking and keeps the larder stocked — I love that Em has her weak spots and admits to them. For one thing, she admits that she doesn’t like Grandma M, even though she also loves her. I hear her on that one! I also believe that a husband’s and wife’s first loyalties are to each other!!
Oh, no. Randa lets her emotions get away from her, and we get one of those instances of how Em handles her children. I LOVE that she’s realistic about her kids yet supportive with the aim of raising decent children.
I do love cozies. There’s so much family/friend support, giving me that warm feeling of acceptance and love. That Em finally learns what it means to have a partner in her marriage. And Roy shows up with a shocker!! Who’d’ve thought?!? Then Rose follows up with her shockers!
Oh, wow! Wait’ll you read about the wedding gift the bikers give Em! Where can I find some bikers to help!?
There’s a good bit of action what with the drama of Em’s grandmother’s wedding gown, someone shooting at Joe, Murray’s family drama — why does everyone think a woman always wants to have kids?, heart attacks, the come-ons to Joe while he’s at the calendar shoot, Em’s jealousy, Randa’s jumping to conclusions, Rose’s sudden insight into perspective, a terrifying kidnapping, yep, there's no lack of action.
Whoa, Maeve has a fascinating bit of family lore! Another whoa is Roy and his about-face!!
The Story It’s an exciting time for Em. She’s marrying Joe and they’re having a party to celebrate it.
But then disaster strikes. Roy shows up, the bridal shop owner absconds leaving an undone wedding dress, the band cancels . . . and a cursed necklace affects Em’s emotions.
The Characters Emerald “Em” O’Brien, the village witch, owns the Chintz ’n China Tea Room and has two children: Miranda "Randa", who is fascinated by the stars, and Kipling "Kip", computer whiz, tumbler, who loves magic, but doesn’t think before he acts. Their four rescue cats are Samantha and her three kittens: Nebula, Nigel, and Noël.
Rose is Em’s estranged sister; Charles is her about-to-be ex-husband. Em and Rose’s mother is Klara O’Brien. Grandma McGrady, Em’s paternal grandmother, is a PITA who is easily offended. Her rival, Nanna, is Em’s maternal grandmother who taught her how to use her gift.
Joseph Ethan Files, a.k.a. Joe, is the captain of the town’s Medic Rescue Unit — even better, he’s engaged to Em. Nathan is Joe’s irresponsible brother. The even more irresponsible Dexter is their father. Terri is their mother with her string of boyfriends. The only reliable relative is Great-aunt Margaret “Maggie” Files, a retired county clerk. Maggie is dating Dr Lanford Willis, a retired doctor.
Chiqetaw, Washington, is . . . . . . where Em and Joe live. Employees at Chintz ’n China include Cinnamon, who has graduated with her AA in accounting, and Lana. Clients include Farrah Warnoff.
Harlow, a former fashion model, is married to James Rainmark, a famous photographer about to go off on a three-month photo shoot and Harl’s childhood sweetheart. They have a new baby girl, Eileen. Lily is their nanny. Ida, a retired schoolteacher, is both neighbor and frequent babysitter for the O’Briens. Horvald is another neighbor and sitter who is courting Ida.
Chiqetaw PD The Native American Anna “Mur” Murray, the chief of detectives and a warrior, is Em’s best friend (since college) and her maid of honor. Sid and Nancy are Murray’s pet boas. Police officers include Deacon, Greg, and Sandy Whitmeyer. Tad Bonner is the chief of police.
Roger White works with Joe; Melissa is his wife. Other EMTs include Larry Davidson.
White Deer, Murray’s aunt, is a medicine woman in the tribe; Lynx is an inner teacher. Maeve Elliston, a friend, raises llamas and sells blankets, caps, and sweaters made from their wool; she’s thinking of opening a new shop.
Jimbo “Jimmy” Warren, a biker extraordinaire who lives off the land and is Anna’s significant other, turns out to be quite the dancer. Snidely and Whiplash are Jimbo’s cats. Roo is the three-legged dog Jimbo rescued. Sugar is the name he gave his motorcycle. Trigger and Terry-T are some of Jimbo’s fellow bikers, who are in the Klickavail Valley enclave. Clyde and Scar had also been fellow bikers (Murder Under a Mystic Moon, 3). Traci had been Scar’s pregnant wife.
Janette Armor owns the Bridal Veil and lives at the Wilkenshire Arms where Doreen Jenks is the manager. Tilda is the shop cat. Lavyrl McKenzie was one of Janette’s clients. Joanne’s Bridal Boutique is overwhelming. The Crystal Pyramid is a metaphysical shop owned by Ryan Neilson. Cadillac Bob’s is a camping area owned by the disreputable Bob Cappinalo.
Gunner Lindemeyer had briefly been Miranda’s boyfriend (A Harvest of Bones), and Andrea has just dumped him. Lori Thomas is Randa’s best friend; her parents, Natalie and Luke, are both lawyers and very self-entitled.
Ingrid Lindstrom is a gossip columnist for the Chiqetaw Town Crier, which seems to have a problem with the difference between reality and speculation. Cathy Sutton is another media hound, who owes Em a favor.
The annoying Roy is Em’s ex-husband with no brakes. Tyra is his second wife, who just left him. The Barry Boys are a popular band. The Forest End’s Diner is an upscale restaurant. Wilma Velcox is a nurse at the hospital. Andrew had been Em’s previous boyfriend who thought he could do better and is now stalking Em. Marvin Eyrland is a handyman. Brigit had been a ghost in A Harvest of Bones. Josh had been Rose’s pilates trainer. Wilber Perry had been a wealthy eccentric. Eunice Addison, the social maven of Chiqetaw, is the annoying photo shoot manager. Dylan seems to be the photographer. The misogynistic Rusty Jones, a former clerk in the office, was fired in A Harvest of Bones. Bernard Dresser is friends with Rusty; Jolene Johnson is his angry girlfriend. Destiny is Jolene’s youngest daughter. The Bread and Butter House helps people procure food and get meals.
Thomas Carter had commissioned a necklace, the Bride’s Circlet in 1805 for his daughter, Sally. She was engaged to Niles, a cousin. Betsy had been a family slave. Charles Carter immigrated to the US and sold it outside the family.
The Cover and Title The cover has a dark background that begins to lighten up with a path leading to a wedding arch trellised with roses opening into the new garden Em and Joe have planted. A framed window is open to the right side. On the sill sits the jade teapot with Samantha sitting to the right. A wedding veil is draped over it all. At the top is the author's name in white with an info blurb between her first and last name. At the bottom is the title in a white cursive font. At the very bottom is a beige banner that fades out on the sides with the series info in black.
The title is too accurate, for it is One Hex of a Wedding.
You know how stuff always goes wrong when you're planning a wedding? OH, boy! You've NEVER seen things go wrong like they do for Emerald O'Brien, owner and proprietor of Chintz 'n' China shop and tearoom, and village witch. Let's see now...her very difficult family is in town for the festivities, her shower is crashed by her drunken ex, her dress is abandoned (in pieces) in the seamstress' shop, her best friend is being stalked by a psycho, her sister has given her a gift that feels "off," and...oh, yeah, her fiancé has been shot! Em knows that there isn't a snowball's chance that these things are NOT related. But can she get to the bottom of this in time to walk down the aisle for her "happily ever after," and what on earth will she wear, even if she can?
***I received a free copy of this book and this review is voluntary*** Well ding dong and sound the gong, Emerald is getting married!!! True to his word in the previous book, Joe had done pop the question. I totally believe that the universe had presented Joe to Emerald and made sure they hooked up. Even if it was one of the worst nights of her life at the time. But what is supposed to be the best time of her life, is turning into cannon fodder for any bridezilla! What can go wrong, will go wrong! First, her ex-husband appears, thanks kip...and then he totally ruins the engagement party. You totally get why he is the worst shmuck alive....until you find out...things are not always as they seem.
Emerald then gets a cursed necklace from her sister...but honestly, she didn't know that when she bought it, so you can't blame her. Unfortunately, because of this curse, we get to follow poor Emerald around as everything becomes a catastrophe. Her dress is ruined, the dress store owner skips town, her grandmother has a heart attack and THEN!! and THEN!!! Joe get's shot. Couldn't anything get worse?? Seriously, if it were me, I would have gone ballistic. This book has some comical things that make you go WTF? Why me? What did I do in a past life to deserve this? And then some real danger..and we are talking about the nutso kind. A person from the past comes back and is out for blood. You'll have to read this book to find out who. At this rate, is anyone going to get to the chapel in time? And is Emerald still on for the wedding...or will the universe have other plans....This book was filled with suspense and thrills as well as wedding angst, which most women, should be able to relate.
What a heart pounding race to the altar. The poor bride to be just can’t have one event go right. She’s got her ex-husband showing up right at the beginning, causing a scene, then getting drunk and causing a fight. Her fiancé gets shot, her maid of honor’s house gets broken into and trashed, her wedding dress is left in tatters on the floor of the bridal shop and the owner has fled, taking money from a bunch of devastated brides to be, while leaving a mound of bills. We’ve also got her grandmother having a heart attack, her maid of honors boyfriend’s house being set on fire while he’s inside asleep, plus more. This all happens in less than two weeks, in the run up to her wedding, and she has to deal with it all, plus stay sane. Then she has to use her powers to figure out who is stalking her best friend (maid of honor) and find out where he is hiding. Will she be able to find him before he hurts her best friend? Will her wedding go on as planned? What a wonderful story. Witty writing, wonderful characters, and a plot that keeps you engaged from the first page. I didn’t even know it was part of a series when I purchased, now I want to read the whole series.
A good book. I read the first 3 books in this series and (at the time) there weren't anymore. However, I have since learned that there are two more (this one and book 6).
Emerald O'Brian is on "vacation" to prepare for her wedding to Joe! Her ex-husband, Roy, shows up at the wedding shower and makes a scene. (Note: Roy only showed up because his 13-year-old son invited him). Emerald and Roy share 2 kids: a 14-year-old girl named Amanda but called Randa and her 13-year-old son, Kip. However, they don't feature as much in this book as in previous books.
The day after the wedding shower, Joe is shot and suspicion falls on Roy. However, Emerald isn't sure that Joe could have done it. But this isn't the only weird thing that happens! But it seems that something or someone does not want the wedding to go off. First Emerald's grandmother has a heart attack, the wedding dress that her grandmother wore in which Emerald plans to wear is totally destroyed, her best friend, Murry is being stalked by a psychopath.
I found this book to be delightful and the main protagonist was quite hard to figure out! (Well, at least I didn't figure it out until it was revealed.) :)
One Hex of a Wedding by Yasmine Galenorn is book 5 in her Chintz ‘n China Mysteries series. In One Hex of a Wedding we catch up with Emerald O’Brien as she prepares to get married to her fiancée Joe Files. The wedding is just a matter of days away but that doesn’t mean that trouble isn’t going to start cropping up all around her. Things get roaring away when Emerald’s ex-husband Roy makes an appearance thanks to a misplaced invitation from her son Kip but Roy isn’t able to keep his mouth shut once he gets some alcohol in his system so things quickly get heated when Roy steps to Joe and starts trying to spout his resentments concerning Emerald. But things only continue to escalate from there. While Emerald receives a beautiful crystal choker from her sister but then bad things quickly begin to follow in almost every way that it possibly could from Joe getting shot, to the band cancelling on her to teenage drama with her daughter Miranda and so much more in between. But of course there’s more with her friend Anna Murray dealing with her own threat to not only her safety but the safety of the man she loves, Jimbo, as a stalker begins to make himself very much known and that he won’t go away quietly. One Hex of a Wedding is a real page turner as things hit the ground running picking up where things left off after Joe Files proposes to Emerald. Emerald is excited for it and busily preparing to get married to the man she loves. She is hoping that the supernatural will let her be but she knows that at the end she has to step in and help when she can and is called upon. We definitely see Emerald get stressed out and lose her cool more than once with all the drama that follows not just her but her friends as well. In this book the story pings back and forth between Emerald and her friend Murray as Murray struggles to find out who is stalking her, invading her life and looking to eliminate Jimbo from her life. While it takes Emerald a bit to put two and two together concerning the crystal necklace it’s nice to see that her friends are there to be there for her when she needs them. This is a really well written story. If you’ve read the previous books then figuring out whom is the person stalking Murray. But even if you haven’t read the previous books you can still read this book as a standalone novel. There are more than a few close calls in this story and there is definitely a lot going on as Emerald prepares for her wedding and deals with all the chaos that the hexed necklace brings into her life. There are quite a few surprises that are written in that really pull this story together and make it a very enjoyable read. My only complaint really would be is that we don’t get to read about the actual wedding which is what I had hoped for but it’s a good ending nonetheless. Whether you are a returning fan of Yasmine Galenorn’s or someone who has stumbled across this story and are interested in checking it out I definitely recommend this story for sure. It’s a good fun read that gives you mystery, romance, danger and hope. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and two thumbs up. I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future. I received a copy of this book in exchange for a voluntary review.
𝑶𝒏𝒆 𝑯𝒆𝒙 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝑾𝒆𝒅𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈, A Chintz & China Mystery, #5, by Yasmine Galenorn
This is a fun series and I've enjoyed all of the books except the 6th one, which is a Christmas themed book, and I'm saving it for my usual December month-of-reading-only-Christmas-themed-novels. While I've seen nothing that says outright that this series is at an end, the fact that there has been nothing new published since, I think, 2016, indicates that unless Galenorn is pulling a Jim Butcher, the series is complete.
As is obvious from the title, Emerald O'Brien and her younger, hot fireman boyfriend are getting married. But first, they need to survive the week leading up to the ceremony and it seems that, as usual, nothing is going smoothly on either the paranormal plain or in everyday life.
A quick and enjoyable read. I'm very sorry to be saying goodbye to Emerald's adventures.
This is the 5th book about the china/tea/tarot shop owner, Emerald, and her family and friends. Although the time before a wedding is ofter marked by tension and ups amd downs, everything seemed to be going wrong just before Emerald and Joe's wedding. After Joe got shot, Jimbo is in a house that burned down, Emerald's ex crashes her pre-wedding party, Murray runs into a stalker, Emerald's grandma has a heart attack, Emerald's wedding dress is not finished, and her band cancels less than 1 week prior to the wedding. All the threads come together at the end of this book in a most satisfying way. Emerald and Joe finally tie the knot in grand style.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
As the wedding day for Emerald and Joe approaches, a certain amount of chaos beyond the norm of wedding planning is no unexpected
Ex husband Roy makes a messy appearance at a pre nuptial party. A creepy stalker is lurking nearby with Murray in his sights.
Randa seems to be adding teenaged bitchiness to her repertoire, though she is generally pretty cool. When she looses her cool, it’s epic and explosive. Her brother Kip sadly works too hard to try to keep everyone getting along and helps nurture the opposite
A wedding week as filled with curses, crazy bad guys and wacky extended family as you might expect
Great read!
I’m looking forward to checking out the Bedlam series now- bought the first book, but wanted to read all about the long awaited wedding before starting
Live the family Emerald and Murray have made, and expect to visit it again
Because all the books in this series have been slowly working their way to the Heroine's HEA with her true love. And she got that, don't get me wrong. But it almost seemed an afterthought. The entire wedding was rushed through without much description or emotion. Boo!
But still, it was a good read for me. I like the main characters and the supernatural aspects in these books. The writing, although not up to the Author's later standards, is still good. I hold to read more in this series.
Fun easy read that kept me entertained and turning the page... fast paced with lots of wonderful earth magic, a tea shopkeeper trouble finding Witch for the Bride who’s BFF is the small town Detective dating a Biker... I enjoyed the characters, very real and especially the Family & Friendships, how they deal with the strife that can ensue... The setting of a small mountain town in Washington was lovely as well.
I received this free eBook through Freesbooksy in exchange for a fair review. In the fifth book of the series, Emerald and Joe finally get ready to tie the knot; therefore, we get to learn more about their siblings and parents. Not only Emerald has to deal with a hexed wedding, because of a cursed wedding gift, and one disaster after another as a result, but she also has to identify and find a dangerous and obsessed stalker who intends to kill her best friend, Murphy, and her new boyfriend in this suspenseful and entertaining book.
Can't a gal be allowed just one problem-free celebration?! Not if she's Emerald O'Brien, chaos magnet! An appearance by the abusive loser ex, unrelenting wedding catastrophes, and numerous hospital visits culminate in dire peril in this well-crafted mystery. Em is such a relatable character because her life is so realistic (beyond the paranormal); the author certainly makes Em earn her happy ending!
4/5 This review is taken from my notes from when I finished the book years ago.
Emerald "Em" O'Brien is the town witch and owns a tea shop. It seems fate has decided she is the local paranormal crime fighter. She is getting married to Joe in a week. He is an EMT. The story starts with her ex crashing their engagement party. Joe gets shot the next day. It appears that anything that can go wrong will.
Ms. Galenorn has a very rich vocabulary, and her descriptions are very vivid. However, she could use a little review of sentence structure and English grammar. I also would edit out some of the hocus pocus. It started to get a little repetitive, and dark.
I would probably classify this as paranormal suspense. The focus is too mixed and the suspect too obvious for it to feel like a mystery to me. It works, MC is likeable, but just isn't something that excites me. That's okay... I read too many books to expect them all to be a perfect match to my taste.
Good read, good story, good characters. I found the book enjoyable but unnecessarily long due to long descriptions that I found superfluous, but that's just me. I hate long descriptions that do not add to the story, just lengthen it and, therefore, try to avoid books that contain them. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this series to mystery readers as it is worthwhile.
Talk about being jinxed! Emerald has a hard enough time just running her tea room and selling china but when you add in a wedding and a CRAZY stalker, well it's a good thing she has some seriously wonderful friends. Love, suspense, danger and really good tea that's what you will find in this book.
Omg 😲 these books were so awesome! Emerald, Murray & Harlow are so good together, Joe & Jimbo I was great add in to the mix of all the ghosts and paranormal stuff that always hit Emerald. I laughed and then there were times I cried I felt so bad for her, I can't wait for book number 7
This is an awesome book, a cross between a paranormal romance and a cozy mystery. Great characters and an intriguing storyline. Part of a series but just fine as a stand-alone. Highly recommended!
Wedding plans are hard enough without having an uninvited ex who fights with your fiancé. The next day gun shot at Joe. and ex is the suspect. This is giving Emerald worries she doesn’t want, instead of happy memories. Been a delightful series, good characters and clean enjoyment.
So very wonderful a tale of danger, love, family relationships, paranormal occurrences and beautiful scenery. Loving the unexpected twists tying it all into a very sweet rendering.
I'm not usually into many of the things to do with scents, folklore etc. but this was a great story. Lots of friends and family that truly cared. I do like the way problems were resolved. This story really had my attention
Emerald and Murray are best friends. Emerald is a psychic type of witch who must use all her powers to save Murray from a very dangerous and a very sick man. And during all through this emerald is trying to plan her wedding!
The characters forge relationships that may seem unusual but reflect how things can happen in real life. This is a standalone but I believe you will enjoy it more if you start at the beginning of the series.
Paranormal series with grand character development. Enjoyed reading another chapter of story of the main character, working to come to terms with her gifts, while protecting Tuesdays cards about.
