Born for a Difficult Time
Who would want to murder Dr. Danny Phillips? On a crisp autumn morning, a toddler, found standing alone beside a lonely country road in her pajamas, leads Nurse Libby Fletcher and Beau Regan, a UPS truck driver, to an isolated house in the woods. There, Libby and Beau make a grisly discovery. Dr. Danny Phillips, the child’s father lies on the grass behind the house, dead from a bullet to the heart.
Everyone says his death is a huge loss to the community and yet the search for Dr. Phillips’ killer, led by Sheriff Adam Fletcher and detectives from the Chelatchie County Sheriff’s Department, quickly identifies several potential suspects. Dr. Phillips, who was adopted at birth, has recently found his birth father, dot-com billionaire Dale Goldstein. Mr. Goldstein has changed his will to include his newly-found son but Zeb Goldstein, Danny Phillips’ half-brother is decidedly not happy.
Then there is Joanne Johnson, the daughter of a man who died while in Dr. Phillips’ care. She sued the doctor and lost in court, but did she follow him from Seattle to this remote northeastern Oregon town with murderous intent? Or could it be a member of the Tabernacle of God, a tiny church whose only reason to exist seems to be to harass physicians who provide abortion as part of the care they offer to their women patients? But perhaps the motive lies far in the past, buried so deep even the killer is no longer aware of it.
