Get ready to experience two more origin stories in the Backyard Starship universe.
Legendary Peacemaker Petyrn Groshenko wasn’t always on the good side of the law.
As a young agent of the KGB, the murder of his father sets events in motion that begin with Petyr doing something beyond his wildest dreams. He leaves the earth. In a starship. And not of his own volition. Abducted by an alien con artist, Petyr Groshenko holds the key to a mystery worth millions—or billions—of bonds, thanks to an ancient secret that began in Russia, passed through Tunisia, and ends in the most unlikely place of all, thanks to a clever American soldier who kept a promise across the years and miles.
To find the treasure, Petyr is going to need luck, and help, and the wits of an alien who is far more than she appears to be.
Join Petyr as he begins the journey of a lifetime in this origin story from the Backyard Starship Universe. Even legends have to start somewhere, and for Petyr Groshenko, it begins here, in Red Agent.

Before Van went to the stars, Mark Tudor was there-- but he wasn't alone.
Perry was Mark's guardian, advisor, and friend, serving decades as they battled for the forces of good, solving cases and stopping crime of all kinds.
But in-between Mark and Van, there was a gap in time where Perry was faced with a choice. Serve the Guild, do what's right and take the next step in a career measured in centuries, not years. In this thrilling look at Perry's history, find out what happens when an AI feels the greatest loss of all-- and moves on, honoring a duty that spans time and the stars themselves.
-Oh, I found out how a young WWI Russian soldier, KGB officer Petyr Groshenko became a legendary Peacemaker. So, this is what happens to abducted humans? I want to be abducted then! 😄a I want to be a Peacemaker, and have Perry as a companion and travel in a fighter spaceship!
With action and unsuspecting twists throughout the story, I was in awe, viewing the wonders of space, the possibility of an alternate history come true, and I stopped to think many times, “could I be abducted too?” The possibilities are infinite!
This origins-2 is so much fun, Perry the bird like AI is fantastic, quasi James Bond like! Lol. I had a wonderful time reading this short story. Next in line is Legacy of Stars #4, of the 11 instalments already released.
Backgrounds on Perry and Greshenko?!! This was a perfect intro Into who and what they are. I very much enjoyed this short introduction. I really hope there's more of this to come!
These stories provide background information about two of the characters in the series. They also give us some insight into how Perry became partners with Van. Well written and interesting.
Two short stories provide some background on Perry and Petyr
Ever wondered what Perry did between van Tudors? Find out in the first tale where he is on a rescue mission to remove a deadly contagion that could wipe out life on Earth. Alternatively (or as well) read about how Petyr came to leave Earth and become a peacemaker and meet B also. While short, these self-contained stories are entertaining, and provide some backstory for a main character and a recurring acquaintance or two. You don't need to read them to follow the main story, but they do provide an insight into the past.
Great way to get reading material for the rest of your life. I really enjoy the story of Van Tudor, a clueless farmer from Iowa, discovering a spaceship in his barn (it was invisible). He learns his grandfather was a space peacekeeper and Van can pick up the family mantle if he wishes to put in the work. A combat AI (in the form of an eagle) is not only a font of information, but also a real smartass. The ship itself is sentient and is very helpful since she really does want to travel the universe catching bad guys.
The bad guy aliens come in all varieties, but their crimes are relatively mundane. They pirate other ships, sell stolen goods, and (worst of all) steal identities and use them in horrible ways.
I like the concept of a guy who gets tossed into a universe he didn't know existed and how his AIs, Perry and Nettie, help him learn the ins and outs of being a space cop--just like his grandpa. He also collects others for his crew, including the woman he'll fall in love with, a huge teenage mechanic, a prissy expert on just about everything, and others who share Van's adventures.
The science is believable (which I really like) and the characters are entertaining. I'm plowing through the books and, fortunately, Chaney keeps writing more for me to read.
Chaney and Maggert never disappoint this reader. The line that divides historic humanity from humans thrust into the eternity of space is clear, yet still compelling. This is an excellent intro into the Backyard Starship series which is my very favorite space conflict series. Hollywood, are you listening????
Wow! It took me for a ride to read this and helped to understand from where Van and Groshensko came from. Love this story, and you will like the other stories as well. Lots of kudos. Perry is the best. Don’t get jealous Skippy, both of you guys Rock! Keep the story rolling J.N and Terry! Thanks
These two shirt stories are a solid plot with a nice progression,,and no need for previous context of the other novels. This is nice little read that I quite enjoyed
Great read, nice to read the back story of the main series. Already read the 9 books. Awaiting the 10th one can't wait. Great authors, will definitely read their other series.
Coming from another book. Different author, the dialogue was quite refreshing and delightful. The references to the Soviet mindset were spot on. I guess I shouldn't stray. from Chaney if I want enjoyable reading.
These are good stories and definitely flesh out our favorite characters (and others). Only rated it 3 stars because I’m not a big short story fan. I always feel as if there should be more, but that’s why they call them “short” stories.
A couple of good, quick short stories that provide a little insight into a couple of the characters in the Backyard Starship universe. These are background only so they can be read at anytime in the series. Not essential, but interesting.
Ok now, this is exactly what I needed in the Backyard Starship series. It’s making even more sense now. I loved the history on Perry and the backstory of Petyr Groshenko and B.
Really getting into this story. Likening the characters, good and not so good.Looking forward to more stories. Just hope it gets wrapped up in about 5 or 6 books.
This is not #2 it's a great jump into how things got started. I can't believe what great writers these two are. Hope.you enjoy this look back into time.
