The party has suffered crushing losses attempting to flee the Ironblood Kingdom. Kuzaku was cut down by Jumbo, and Setora was feasted upon by the orc’s great black eagle. No one had the power to prevent it. No one except the No-Life King, who has been sleeping inside of Merry. And with his awakening comes great upheaval. Now, the sekaishu has overrun Grimgar, eating away at the world. In this chaotic situation, the Frontier Army, the volunteer soldiers, the various races that populate the land, and even people who ought to be dead all take action in order to survive and to achieve their own wishes. As the world is stained black, they each live out their own tales of adventure.

This volume does things differently as we get multiple perspectives like Haruhiro, Hiyomu, Orc King, Goblin King Mogado Gwagajin, Jin Mogis, Kikkawa, Shinohara, Adachi of Team Renji and Kuzaku.

We get a dystopian world now. Most of the loose ends until now are covered except for the situation of Soma and Akira. I wonder if we will follow Merry or Kuzaku's perspectives into the war with the Undead DC or get a backstory on King Ishi and the Archduke. Merry most likely won't participate though.

Shihoru doesn't pop up in this book at all surprising, considering how we got so many POVs.

At the end, Haruhiro reminisces about Barbara and resolves himself to try to find a way to bring Merry and the others back.

Sad that we don't get a follow up on the future timeline mentioned as a side story in the previous volume, I was hoping we will find something. The way this story is currently, I can only imagine the next volume getting the time skip into that story or us following Kuzaku's perspective more than Haru's. It's way more likely to get the time skip though.

Edit : I am worried about how the ending will be, Grimgar despite being good always felt rushed to me, and the last 3 volumes even more so. I can't imagine how the story will end in a way that will make long time readers of this series satisfied. I am scared that I'll get a half cooked ending and idk if it will be a good ending or bad ending or a bad ending that continues to become a somewhat good ending through + and ++ volumes. For a story that started as a survival in an unknown fantasy world, the place the series is at currently feels very weird considering the fact that we didn't spend most of the time in Grimgar. It was always in different worlds. End of my rant.

Looks like this story is going to continue for awhile after all. Not sure what the point of the bonus chapter at end of Volume 18 was as it didn’t play into this one at all. Based on the afterword, the author is finally putting some effort into planning his writing (at the end). Overall, this series is at the bottom of my light novel rankings mostly due to the capriciousness of the narrative. I really hope we are at least given a decent conclusion but I am not holding my breath.

Sad it's ending

The book is pretty good, and tries to tie up all the loose ends of the story. Sad since the world was interesting and I feel like the author is learning his style.
