Cole Miller is a good-for-nothing nobody who skulks around dark alleyways and makes money by boosting cars from those more fortunate than he. He’s the unwanted child of a couple of deadbeats, so he never truly understood what family meant until he stumbled onto a treasure far more valuable than the GT he’s supposed to steal from the heavyweight world champion. Maya Blake, on the other hand, is the daughter of high flying shark lawyers. She has a hefty trust fund coming her way, the world at her feet, and a fresh new dream job only days from starting. Raised a good, obedient girl, Maya’s world is turned on it’s head when the mysterious newcomer takes an interest in her. Maya and Cole couldn’t be more opposite, but what begins as a ‘job’ for Cole becomes so much more, and when Maya finds herself in danger, the protective stranger she once considered a nuisance might be the difference between life and death when his enemies come looking to settle a score. MISTAKE is a sizzling new romance set in our favorite fighter town. Fans of Emilia Finn will get to revisit with old friends, while new readers can dive in and meet the family in this complete standalone story.

I had high expectations for the author’s new series, but unfortunately Mistake didn’t work for me.
Apart from the slow pace and development, there were SO MANY side characters that I literally couldn’t cope with.
Also, the main characters couldn’t hold my interest as well as their journey.

This book started out great. I really enjoyed the side characters. But that turned out to be the only good part about the book lol.

No joke, the town locals were far more entertaining than the main characters and I feel like I missed out on all their stories because this was book 1 of a series.

The female mc was generally unlikeable. Her personality contradicted its self every other paragraph. The male mc was the same, his story and personality contradicted themselves. He also turned into an absolute whiney baby by the end of the book and it was super annoying.

I hated how in-depth all the fighter stuff was. It made me dread when it switched to the male mcs pov because man I do not care about your fight practice.

Anyway, if you’re looking for an mma fighter romance book, prob go check out Nikki ash’s series instead.

Kinda boring

I'm usually an Emilia Finn fan, so it kills me to say this, but this one did not do it for me! I couldn't finish it because it was so boring. It felt like the Rollers storyline is just so drawn out.

Whoever said you can never go home again, has clearly never read any Emilia Finn books! Mistake is the first book in the new Lost Boys series, but it takes place in the infamous unnamed “Rollertown” that many of the author’s other series originate from. The main characters, Cole and Maya, are new to town, but quickly become immersed in the unparalleled world of the Rollin’ On Gym, the fighters who run it, and the people who love them. It felt just like coming home to dip back into the top notch world building with unmatched character development, easter eggs for fans to find, witty banter, authentic bonds, action, plot twists, real emotion, and so much sizzling chemistry!! I usually don’t like jumping back on a timeline, but using new characters in this way to show us old characters in new situations that we didn’t get to see, but would’ve loved to, is pure genius! And the new characters? Wow! Cole and Maya are just as lovable and intriguing as some of my favorite OG characters! I hope we see more of them in the next installment! I wish I had time to go back and do a reread now of some of the books that run concurrently with this one! I cannot wait for the second book!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

All the yesss to this new series!

I’ll start by saying that I adored the Rollin On series, so I super appreciated getting to visit those characters again. The next generation kids are spectacular, and of course all the originals are still amazing. It’s not necessary to read that series, but I definitely recommend it at some point.

This story is about Cole and Maya. Cole is a former foster kid, a nobody, a car thief, that’s just trying to get by. Maya is the polar opposite- the only daughter of two high profile attorneys, she lacked for nothing but affection and the ability to control her own life. In a bit of rebellion, she switches majors from law and becomes a kindergarten teacher. She moves to a small town and teaches some of the Rollers’ kids. Cole shows up when he is tasked with stealing a car that belongs to Jack Reilly, who is the current heavyweight champ and a Roller. These two have some instant chemistry, not always the good kind lol. They bicker and banter, and he makes a big mistake he regrets. They are seemingly opposites, but also fundamentally the same in some areas. They may have come from opposite sides of the track, but neither was raised with the loving parents they deserved. Cole may have come into town with less than respectable plans, but he finds himself taken in by the Rollers and given a shot at fighting. A shot at a real future, and he wants Maya in it.

I love this world, and all the characters in it. It was a great read and a great start in a new series. I put off starting it until I could binge through a few because I knew I was going to want to keep going to see what happens in the next book, and I was not wrong. I am definitely looking forward to the next story.

Actually a 3.75/5 I just can’t round up and give it a four for reasons.

Short version: I was really drawn in immediately with this story — I think maybe I just love a bad boy MMC? — but at several points I felt like I was missing something. At least 5 times I had a “wait did I skip a page?” moment (I hadn’t) where I just felt like something was missing. I might continue the series but probably not as a priority.

🚨SPOILERS AHEAD SORRY🚨

Full Review: This book checks soo many boxes for me — Small town romance, witty banter, he chases her, etc etc. I had zero expectations when I started and was seriously into it by 15%. But I did have some serious issues later on in the book.

First and foremost..I feel like the in-depth focus on the practice fights was just too much specifically given how rushed other aspects of the story felt. Like when Maya comes to face Cole after everything blows up? That deserved more than the inner monologue during gym time.

You get to the end of the book (literally at 96%) and find out that the person who attacked Maya was Cole’s opponent in his first fight with a cash prize. I have SO MANY questions. Did he work for Box? How did that come about if so? If not, what the heck was the point? That little plot twist was just glossed right over and I felt like it was unfinished business.

Overall the story line was good. Bad guy meets good girl, messes up but fights to turn himself into a respectable man & win her back. Love the HEA and all that. I just needed….more.

A fantastic beginning to this series

Bad boys..... enough said! Lol! Ok, this story was a bit different from the original Rollin On series, which is expected since this isn't about those characters, even though they (as well as others) play a significant role in this book. Good girl, college educated, from a wealthy family. Bad boy, car thief, high school dropout, from an abandoned family, and homeless more often than not. Even though their lives are completely different, they don't seem to be compatible at all, neither are willing to accept the circumstances that they've been handed. It's a wild and crazy ride that will keep you guessing until the end.
I really enjoyed that many of my favorite characters were involved in this book. I was thrilled when I realized that I got to see more of them while learning about the newest characters. I would highly recommend reading all of the previous books by this talented author prior to starting this series. It's not necessary, but it will give you a better understanding of the characters (especially those who have already had their own stories), the connections ~ of which there are many, and the dynamics between all of them. They're all absolutely fantastic stories, and you certainly won't be disappointed!
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.

I'm looking forward to another awesome series!

back with the rollers!

We are back in the world of the Rollers and it is awesome! This new series takes place slightly before and during the Stacked Deck series and it’s so fun to put together the little bits here and there.

The bad boy gets the good girl right? Or is it when the bad boy goes good? Cole’s karma is catching up and it’s time to flip it. Maya can’t seem to stay away from the bad boy who is throwing every damn red flag there is! They both fight their attraction, it’s a literal opposites attract.

I love the spitfire that is Maya! She gives so much sass and attitude to Cole, yet he eats it all up. His love for her is all in right away. I will say, the love and intensity of their love move a little quick for me, yet their connection was still amazing.

I loved how Cole seemed to grow into himself when the rollers forced his chance. He had so much self doubt, which considering his upbringing, it’s understandable. Maya had a shitty childhood too for different reasons, yet together they make each other whole.

I would highly recommend this book. It’s the first kn a series and is interconnected with several other of Emilia’s series. Crossovers were definitely here, and I loved it!

Good read! I read the Checkmate and rollers series a while ago, so it was nice to come back to this world. I love good side characters, and this book has a ton of them, so that was a plus for me.

A thief on the wrong side of the tracks meets a sweet, innocent kindergarten teacher. When Cole's ordered to steal the current MMA heavyweight champions rare mustang, it doesn't go as planned. Its hard to blend in, in a small town with eyes and ears watching your every move, he gathers the eyes of the rolling gym crew, so to blend in to a small town he uses the sweet local kindergarten teacher as a pawn to keep attention off his presence in town. When his attempt goes sideways, the rolling crew offer him a lifeline, train in their gym to become the next world champion, or go to prison. His dream has always been to become a professional fighter, he is naturally good at it, since he's been fighting on the streets to survive his whole life. He is determined to make something out of himself, and get out of the shady lifestyle he has grown up in. Maya, left her prestigious lawyer parents, and law school to follow her dreams of becoming a teacher. She draws the eye of the new bad boy in town, and she can't seem to keep herself away.

OMixed feelings with this one. The writing is good, and I enjoyed the back story for the most part but wasn't expecting to be immersed into the roller world once again. It's getting a bit repetitive/tired for me, but obviously many readers love these MMA fighters and their expansive families.

There are so many characters in this book, that if you are new to the author, I'd advise to read her books in order, otherwise you'll be really confused as to who they all are. You can find the reading order on her website. As it is, I haven't yet read all the previous roller stories, so this book does have spoilers for heaps of them re couples and plot outcomes.

I also find that Emilia's characters always come across as exactly the same re personality, attitudes, speech - even the kids/teens. A bit of difference would be refreshing. The romance is slow burn to start, then steamy. There's lots of fun banter, drama and action, (which I love). It's certainly an entertaining book. Available in KU.

Yay I'm home in roller town again

Fantastic, phenomenal! Could NOT put it down. I dont know how finn does it every time. It's her superpower. This book had it all and was absolutely amazing as always from emilia. We return to roller town but with new fighter! Cole. God he's so different from our other rollers but then he's so familiar.
Great to be back in Roller town again. It feels like we never left.. Finn knows her dang town. Even if we don't lol... the fact she can so easily out us back there is amazing... Cole, and Maya bring back vibes of Kit and Bobby, and Jack and Britt. Ee totally get the amazing chemistry. We get trash talking fighters as always in roller town, and lots of action. Sizzling, hot moments between our main characters. There are ups and downs and it's a hell of a roller coaster and one that I never wanted to get off. I can NOT wait for more. I need more rollers.. always. Lol so never stop with roller town. We all might die if you do.

"Sometimes a person just steals"

I didn't know I needed to go back to the Rollers. I've read every series by Emilia and I've loved them all. Checkmate was there and intermingles but they fight a different fight with different rules. Stacked Deck showed us the kids all grown. The Rosa's took us back in time but on the outskirts. Sinful gives us hints of characters but it's a different city. And now we're back. Two new characters that were there and we didn't know them.
I love this story and I can't wait for more. Maya and Cole. She has a strong moral compass and believes in Karma and he... doesn't. Its fantastic and heartbreaking, funny af and nostalgic, too. I wasn't ready for the book to end, even though the story was complete. I wanted more. I still want more.

lost Boys Series starter

This new foray into Roller town is fun and nostalgic, with new people and situations intermingled with with visits from some of our favorite characters from the original Rollin On series. Maya has just moved to town to start her position as a kindergarten teacher. She literally bumps into Cole as she is preparing to meet some new friends for dinner. Cole is in town to steal a car, but can’t help being drawn to Maya. When everything goes wrong, he’s given a second chance by a plucky teenager and grabs on with both hands so he can earn the right to be with Maya.
If you enjoy Alpha male behavior, sassy and strong females, and a cast of unforgettable support characters (many of whom have their own books), you don’t want to miss this latest from Emilia Finn.

Absolutely freakin love that Emilia took us back to Roller town!!! My god how I adore her writing. This author is a magician in her ability to suck you in to her stories. I loved the intro of new characters and my heart exploded at the return of the originals. Little Charlie I beg for his story one day. I couldn’t put Mistake down I tried waiting as close to the release of the Lost Boys book 2 because I knew it was going to be torture to wait but I just couldn’t hold strong. Nor could I put it down once I started - so there I stood attempting to put mascara on with one hand while trying to read on my kindle with the other!!! This is what Emilia’s books do to me!!! If you haven’t read Mistake go do it now, you won’t regret it!

Cole & Maya

Just loved their story.

Maya goes against her elitist parents wishes and after four years of law school she decides its not for her. She follows her dream to be a school teacher in a small town.

Cole has had it rough all his life and he winds up stealing cars to keep a roof over his head and food in his belly. He never really had a reason to strive for better in his life...until he and Maya cross paths.

What starts out as a ploy to take a not yet released car from the towns best known MMA fighter turns into a chance for Cole to turn his life around.

But first he has to convince Maya the he wants her in his life forever.

Her parents aggravated the heck out of me!!!

This is the first in a new series, and this is Cole and Maya’s journey. Cole is the typical bad boy, and Maya is a sassy spitfire, and they are both new in town. It does not take them long to become immersed into the Rollin’ On Gym, where Cole is a new fighter. There is an intense connection between these two, and the chemistry is undeniable. The only downside for me is that the story was a tad repetitive in places, however, I look forward to reading more in this intriguing series. This is a good story which is an opposites attract romance, which is a slow burn, with action, emotions, witty banter, humor, twists, drama, and love, which leads to an enjoyable page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this author whose work I recommend.

The teacher and the thief

This is a typical good girl, bad boy story. What makes it amazing is that it's written by Emilia Finn and is set in the Rollers world!! So we see our new characters immersed in these crazy loving strong men and women from her previous series a lot! It's set in a timeline before the next generation series, so the kids aren't all grown and have there own books. The main characters in this story are Maya, a kindergarden teacher and Cole a car thief who wants to steal Jack Reilly's new car. I love Emilia's writing. It's always hot, funny and of course there is drama, but not frustrating, predictable drama where you want yo scream at the characters lol loved it!

YESSS!!!

This was everything I hoped it would be and more!! We get to see our Rollers and the “lost boys” become more, I am always in such awe of Emilia’s books they never and I mean never fail to make me realise how incredible her writing is. The stories captivate you and hold on too your attention and heart from the first page! Now on to the rest!! These are incredible.. Emilia never and I mean never stop listening to those characters and writing their stories, no one has gone this far sticking to the intertwined plots more or better than you.. and that my friend, speaks volumes!

Back to Rollertown

Going back to Rollertown to watch Cole and Maya’s story unfold while seeing glimpses of Roller friends and family is as wonderful as the main story. Emilia creates a world that just sucks you in. I strongly recommend reading her books in order (see her web site) as this story interweaves with characters and locations established in previous book series. (Even Pawns…we’ve *seen* that bullet-holed mattress before!) While the story is readable as a standalone, it makes much more sense when you already know the characters and Cole and Maya are truly the “new kids in town”.

trip down memory lane

How do you accurately describe sheer perfection? How it feels to meet new people and yet love visiting with old favorites? How can someone make you feel like you’re reading about real people? Emilia Finn is just pure genius! She could literally write a how to manual on how to watch paint dry, and I would read it with relish and rave about it!!

Thank you for taking us on a new journey while still letting us visit back in Roller Town.

Run, don’t walk, and get this book!!

A Taste of home

I forgot how much I've missed the rollin on family. Emilia finn has created a world where the author, readers, and the fictional characters feel like one big happy, dysfunctional family. Maya and Coles' story was no different. Wheather you've been there from the beginning or are new to the crew. It feels like home. Everything you could possibly want is in this series. You can start with mistake but, in my opinion, start from the beginning to completely immerse yourself in the world.

The Lost boys are in Roller town

This book was absolutely EVERYTHING I was missing. It was like coming home after a long time away. Cole Miller was the element I didn't know I needed to discover in Roller Town. As we are caught back in with favorite beloved characters, and introduced to some new keepers. Brilliant story from a perspective we never saw in previous books. Absolutely page turning amazingness, that had me laughing as much as I swooned.
Cannot wait for Prestons story. Chefs 💋 brilliance. Thanks for taking us back.

Cole is the stereotypical bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks
Maya is a trust fund good girl trying to find herself in a small town.
When coke wind up in her town to steal a rare car, he finds himself stumbling on a treasure much more valuable. Whilst they couldn’t be more different she soon discovers that Cole will do anything to protect her.
This was a relatively easy read, it flowed well and had be interested in the story from the get go… keen to read book 2 next!

“It’s a pretty town, but somehow it comes with a lot of personality.” It was beyond amazing to be back in *this* town, with all of these unforgettable personalities. This book would read just fine as a stand-alone, but if you’ve read other books by this author- the side characters being so many favorites from the past made this quite possibly one of my favorite books EVER. Cole is a boy whose had it rough since the beginning, but loves so hard. Maya is a girl whose always had it all, but is afraid to fall in love. Together, they are hilarious, steamy, and a (hard-earned) perfect HEA.

Looks like I’m in the minority here, but I just didn’t enjoy this book. I didn’t care for Cole or Maya and so much focus was put on the characters from the Rollers that it stole focus. I almost DNF, but stuck it out. Maya’s constant shy stuttering airhead act was annoying and I’m not sure how parents would trust her to teach their kids. Cole was just a turd through 80% of this book. When Cole is stealing cars and acting like a juvenile a**, Maya was a kindergarten teacher. I never felt their connection.

Back to the World of Rollers

I LOVED Cole and Maya’s story! Instant attraction with a lot of road blocks. Loved getting to see a different view from the Roller’s world as this takes place while Smalls is off to college. The loyalty, family and good vibes that this town holds just makes you want to move there! Cole and Maya fight for each other and come out with a HEA. Can’t wait for Preston’s story!

Cole and Maya

I couldn't put this book down. Cole had me laughing my butt off with all his crazy ways and Maya is the best at keeping him on his toes. It was great getting reacquainted with the rollers and their crew and especially Sophia. That girl just rocks!! I loved every single second of this book. Emilia Finn knows how to keep us entertained. I just wish this book never ended. I absolutely love any and all things to do with my favorite crew.

Loved this!

I was so happy to back to the rollers. Cole has had to learn to take care of himself his whole life. He has a lot of demons to overcome. He becomes someone loyal and with a good heart. Maya is so sweet and innocent. She had to learn how to stand on her own and follow her heart. Shed finds the total opposite person than her and falls in love with him. This book was so good. I think it's time for a reread of the rollers.

Awwww

I'm not sure how Emilia does it. You'd think staying in the same world for soooooo many books would make the stories unbearably repetitive. But every book that is released I devour as soon as I can because the author can really spin a good love story.
Going back to roller town, revisiting characters and meeting the new arrivals, Cole and Maya who come from different backgrounds but somehow are perfect for each other... just *chefs kiss*
