Ayanna is a stressed-out school counselor and ready for Spring Break. Then her boyfriend decides they need to take a break to reevaluate their relationship. She posts her frustration on social media. Then Zack, an old flame, slides into her DMs. He offers to help her enjoy her break.
Ayanna is a stressed out school counselor counting down the seconds until Spring Break when her boyfriend hits her with the classic “we need to take a break.” Now she’s single adjacent, irritated, and tweeting her feelings into the void when Zack, her old college flame, slides into her DMs like he’s been waiting for this moment. What starts as a little digital flirting turns into a second chance she didn’t realize she still wanted.
This was such a cute, feel good second chance romance with a grown woman choosing herself first before she chooses anyone else. I loved Ayanna’s energy, especially the way she leans on her best friend like the world owes them both good things. And Zack? That man said “I’m intentional now” and proved it every time he opened his mouth. No games, no confusion, just effort, clarity, and a little spice.
The story is novella short but still delivers a full arc, and I appreciated the message about not waiting around for someone who doesn’t know what they want. Ayanna deserved softness and peace, and Zack showed up ready to give it to her.
A sweet, quick read with Black love, good vibes, and a reminder to never let anybody put you on pause.
If your ex decides he needs a break from the relationship, do you cry or boss up and move on? If you’re Ayanna you take that opportunity to visit an old flame from college and watch all the pieces fall in place.
“I’m no longer interested in someone who isn’t sure about me”
This quote resonated with my soul and I promise I read that line about ten times before moving on. This is a short and sweet second chance Novella that proves that timing is everything. I absolutely LOVE the friendship that Ayanna had with her bestie. We all need that friend to encourage our shenanigans while keeping us safe. The twitter gods must have heard my cry because we have a 5’10 hero in this book. He’s not short but he ain’t a 6 ft plus giant. I love the representation because men under six feet need love too lol! This story isn’t heavy on the sex, but I enjoyed it because it sends a great message to NEVER sit at a table that no longer serves you. Get up, pack your shit and bounce. Kudos to Ayanna
on break was such a cute, quick second-chance vibe — i really enjoyed this one. ayanna is a stressed-out school counselor literally counting the minutes until spring break, and then her boyfriend hits her with that classic, tired “we need to take a break.” like… sir, please. she’s suddenly single-adjacent, annoyed, and venting on social media when zack — her old college flame — slides into her dms like he’s been waiting for his opening. the shift from digital flirting to “oh wait… this might be something real again” felt so natural. even in novella length, the chemistry was there, the timing made sense, and the pacing didn’t feel rushed. i loved that ayanna didn’t sit around waiting for a man who wasn’t sure about her — she deserved softness, clarity, and a partner who actually wanted her. and zack? yeah, he showed up ready to give all of that without hesitation. short, sweet, and a solid 4/5 for me. the message hit exactly how it needed to: stop holding space for someone who doesn’t know what they want when someone who does is right there willing to love you correctly.
Tropes: second chance romance, exs to strangers to lovers
TW/CW: 18+
Representation: black romance
Thoughts: this book was recommended to me based off another book i read on kindle. shoutout to kindle for telling me to read this cuz it was everything i needed!!! i love a good second change romance!! mike who? this book was short sweet and to the point! but zack dont play about this girl and im hear for it. zack is a true examples of “if he wanted to he would” my only issue was that the synopsis said the female mc is school counselor when shes actually is a school social worker. and im only pointing this out because there is a difference between the two career paths.
Ayanna is tired from work and a recent break with her boyfriend. Her ex reaches out to seize the opportunity of this break. It was a cute second-chance romance. I enjoyed that it was realistic and not over the top in the love and commitment area.
