I think all of us can relate to times of great joy or terrible heartbreak when we were bound to each other by meals we shared at the time. I ate spaghetti and meat sauce with my students at lunch on 9/11, not aware of the tragedy that had occurred in New York and Washington on that fateful day. I remember the meal my family shared when we came to understand that my ill mother wasn’t going to get better, or the time the neighborhood dog stole our turkey on Thanksgiving Day, or the first date with my wife to be, sharing ice cream at Friendly’s. Think about the most important moments in your life. A good (or bad) meal was part of the fabric of your experience. So set out your best (or worst) dinner ware, have a beverage at hand, bring plenty of napkins (and tissues!) and see how your life’s most important events included eating with the people you love.
I don't think anybody gives a lot of thought to the food they eat or the story surrounding the food. Rick Collins puts memories to food in his latest book, Good Bread : Life While Eating Really Good (and Bad) Food. In this book he devotes a chapter to a food and it's meaning to him, whether it's a small memory or a monumentous one, readers will enjoy getting lost in this book.
I never really gave much thought to food, although I guess I should, seeing as my mother would always make whatever meal and dessert my brother and I requested for our birthdays. My meal of choice for most years was baked stuffed pork chops with baked potatoes and brussel sprouts, the dessert always changed. My mother was an amazing chef and an even better baker.
Reading Good Bread : Life While Eating Really Good (and Bad) Food and seeing how Collins shares his food stories will open up readers to foods and the significants of it throughout their lives. As I read I was reminded of some foods and the memories attached to it. We don't give it much thought when we are preparing and eating food but I am sure that everyone while reading this book can relate some foods to memorable times in their lives.....and probably some bad times as well.
Good Bread : Life While Eating Really Good (and Bad) Food is a fun book to read when you have a few hours or a free afternoon or evening. It will not take you long to get through this book as the chapters are mostly short and the stories are sweet. The only thing that I recommend before you start reading this book is to grab something yummy to snack on......Collins will make you hungry but you won't want to put the book down to grab something to eat.
I really enjoyed reading Good Bread. It brought back so many memories of growing up in a large family with food being the centerpiece of so many celebrations. Everyone can easily substitute the food or the place in time as it effected your life growing up. A book that has you walking down memory lane of both the good and the not so good memories.
Mr. Collins fills this book with heartfelt and meaningful reflections on life as they are experienced through food. His stories will fill you will nostalgia and will take you everywhere from school classrooms to grandparents houses. Thank you, Mr. Collins, for sharing your stories with us and showing us how we should cherish the small yet precious moments of life.
