Want a little spice with your sugar? Cats and Sugar Bowls delivers with nine bite-sized stories about love between women. Rena and Sanae are like a pair of naughty kitties who act far more innocent than they really are. Touka, while looking for a lover willing to indulge her more extreme BDSM fantasies, runs into her boss at a bondage club. All these delights and more await!
A yuri anthology by the creator of Futaribeya, which undoubtedly means some harmless fluff? Right? Hold on to your tweezers, though, because we’re gonna get really weird.
Well, the description of this book promises something spicier than the mangaka’s ongoing and they definitely deliver on that, to the extent that this is a very, um, fetish-forward book that might be a little too indulgent for some.
Interestingly, this doesn’t go for the traditional taboos (at least this doesn’t have incest in it), but it sure does go to some places. There’s something very, very just a smidgen too far with some of these that makes for a rather rocky romp.
Undoubtedly the best story is the first set, about a hostess with an unusual visual problem who winds up letting somebody into her life. Their relationship quickly evolves over the course of three stories. It’s mostly fluff, but it’s got enough chemistry to make it work.
The next section is about S&M and, while I laud the notion of normalizing kink play as something adults might do, this one definitely has a squick factor to it that foregoes the usual image of bondage (there’s a great background image of some shibari that seems somebody had fun researching) in favour of something a little more… wounding.
As a consequence, this one’s going to appeal more to a certain subset of fetishists than just about anybody else simply because of the subject matter. It’s too bad, I see the merit in not just doing the old whips/chains/handcuffs, but its replacement is… no thanks.
Which brings us to the next story, which is so focused on a particular act that comes across as really, really gross rather than sensual to me personally that I couldn’t stand it. This will obviously not be a problem for the luckier people, but it churned my stomach.
Things pick up again towards the end. There’s a very silly laundry encounter between two women, one incredibly innocent and the other decidedly not so much. A maid who is not very good at being a maid shows up and has a delightfully imbalanced dynamic with her owner’s daughter - this feels like it could easily be spun off, as these two are really fun in the short time we spend with them.
There’s a story about two schoolgirls who were inseparable and this one skews closest to Futaribeya, but it has a dark streak to it that I kind of loved. The author describes it as yandere, but really the one girl just comes off as brilliantly manipulative and this one wound up being mean-spirited fun.
The story that closes off the book is a little quickie about fantasy beings that was kind of sweet and I wish had been a little more fleshed out. It’s probably the tale with the least bite to it (in one case most definitely).
Overall, a really mixed bag. There are some stories here that I hope to never read again and some others that will be fun to go through again another day. Seeing this mangaka’s artwork like this makes you really appreciate her skill, which the mostly-chibi Futaribeya only occasionally showcases.
3 stars - I won’t be ranking this high on my yuri anthology list, which is still basically “every volume of Eclair and then everything else”, but I think some of these stories that made me raise the old eyebrow are ones that others will be fine with, so I put that down to personal taste. Not a waste of time, but nothing I feel the urge to re-read any time soon.
Don't let the adorable cover fool you! While some of the stories in this were definitely cute, this yuri manga is unexpectedly bold in its exploration of some rather unconventional kinks. I can definitely see where it would be a bit much for some readers, but I actually really liked the longer BDSM story in this. While I've never really seen this in manga, I'm pretty open to most consensual kinks, so it worked for me. Aside from the two longer stories, the shorter stories were mostly underdeveloped, and left me wishing the author had chosen to focus more on depth than quantity. Nevertheless, the art is cute and I definitely think I'll reread the first two stories, so it's still a solid read for me.
Some of the stories were really cute, others under developed. Fantastic art 🤌🤌🤌 that hair plucking one was weird. Idk how to rate it honestly. I wish the second story was longer and the last one too. I'll give it a 2.5 to 3
This was…okay. I have to remember that I’m not the biggest fan of short story collections 😭
Tbh, I bought this on a whim when I found it at Barnes & Noble. I mostly got it because I saw the panels of the short story that has S&M 🙊 I’m a predictable hoe, and I was into it.
However, most of the stories were too disjointed for me. There were definitely some gems in here, but I was left wanting more from some of them. It often felt like I was getting a preview for a much larger story.
All in all, not mad I got this, but it was just fine. Might try out other works by this mangaka tho 🤷🏻♀️
is the ogre and the mountain god the last short story in this collection? yes. is it also the one I will think about for the next six months? absolutely.
it pains me to give a yuri manga such a low rating, but it also pains me to read such a half-assed yuri manga, sooooo... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ that hair plucking story was weird af
Luettu lokakuussa. Upeasti kuvitettuja lyhäreitä naisten välisestä rakkaudesta. Aika pöhkö kokoelma sinänsä, mutta nautin joka hetkestä. Lukisin uudestaan. Lisäksi: aina kun muistan, yritän tarkistaa onko piirtäjän sukupuoli tiedossa (yuriin liittyvien stereotypioiden hälventämiseksi). Yukiko taitaa olla nainen!
I normally am not a huge fan of anthology manga like this, but I saw it with a friend in a bookstore and I have been intrigued ever since, based upon the summary at least. It seemed right up her alley, and I was interested too.
The first story is a set of three chapters- a trilogy. The "cat" trilogy. I liked this one in that it felt like a very normal albeit somewhat shallow adult relationship between two young women. The hostess seemed to live life by the seat of her pants (or however the saying goes) and the other seemed to be comfortable with just about anything so long as she felt she was enjoying the way she used her time. I don't know, something about it felt so niche but realistic too for adulthood and I quite liked it.
The second story, Unbreakable Sugar Bowl; ohh, I very much enjoyed its representation of everything it stood for. I just want to say it now; realistic and likable and thank you, Yukiko-sensei, for writing it. The mangaka said they'd like to write more S&M things and I'm totally here for it.
The third story, Silky, wasn't something I felt comfortable with. But I did think the two girls were very cute in design. But I can agree with one thing. I do prefer silky over scratchy.
The fourth story, My Childhood Friend, was... interesting. Yet another pretty realistic story but I don't think I like people like Miwa... maybe it's because I sort of was her at her age. It gives me the chills to think about it... I don't like it at all. Gal-san, please run away.
The fifth story, One AM At The Laundromat, is actually featured in Syrup: A Yuri Anthology Vol. 1! So, this wasn't my first time reading it. Both times around, I thought it was very brisk, fresh, and cute. I really liked this one; I always think about chance encounters at laundromats and all the sorts of things that could happen connected to a laundromat. Maybe it's from all the time spent waiting... even though I've rarely used laundromats in my life.
The sixth story, Killing Time of the Butterfly, was very elegant, very pretty. Too short-lived for me to say much about though... except that the mistress looked notably younger than the maid, hmm... But it's also possible they were roughly the same age, especially if younger, say, 13 and 15? I wonder how many mistresses and maids might have killed time like this together for real.
The seventh story, The Ogre and the Mountain God, was faaar too short-lived! I really liked the art and the idea of it, but it didn't quite feel grandiose or anything. It was more like the mangaka had drawn a picture, and this was the very small story behind the meaning of the picture. If she ever wrote more of these two or things of this nature, however, I'd scoop it up right away. I do love ogre/oni stories.
Lastly, the author notes in the back of the book, especially the last page, really make me smile from the bottom of my heart. I also quite adore the way Yukiko-sensei draws, even the little doodles of themselves, but especially anytime they draw a kitty cat. The doodle of them sleeping with their cat gave me immeasurable happiness.
BEFORE YOU READ MY REVIEWS FOR EACH STORIES. KNOW THAT I LOVED GOING IN BLIND. IT MADE THE EXPERIENCE BETTER IN MY OPINION. IF YOU STILL WANT TO SEE MY THOUGHTS ON EACH STORIES THOUGH I TRIED MY BEST TO NOT SPOIL ANYTHING.
watchful cat to the phone and the cat; i honestly would've read a full manga about these two girls. i was very confused at first but the more i read the more i loved the concept and i found them so cute together. i just needed more honestly but i am still glad they had three short stories for me to enjoy.
unbreakable sugar bowl; i loved this story way more than i thought i would. i learned a little about s&m fetishes. it made me realise that their's a whole fetish world that we know little to nothing about. in this story we have a classic dom fetish for the love interest and a blood/lover hurting them fetish. you could see tho how both made compromises and it was really cute.
silky; this one was short and interesting. I didn't even know pulling hair could be a fetish to some people. well, it wasn't presented in this one as something sexual tho. both the characters had a real nice dynamic.
my childhood friend; yandere style story that i feel was the most boring story of them all. it was okay and but i don't know why i felt it was kind of basic? i know, a yandere isn't basic but, to me, in this book, it was. i know it isn't the story i'll remember the most.
one am at the laundromat; this was odd but really cute too. small town girl moves to big city tokyo and tries to figure out how those big machines work. cute lady just comes in and start to try and seduce her but in such a gentle way (after a weird moment tho but i don't want to spoil it. without this scene tho it wouldn't have had the same impact tho.)
killing time of the butterfly; not gonna lie i wasn't expecting and historical short love story. it was such a great surprise tho as it was so cute and i loved it. it was simple but effective.
the ogre and the mountain god; i told you i didn't expect the historical short well i expected fantasy even less ahah! it was one of the shorter reads of this manga but oh was it so adorable. I can't really explain more than this because i don't want to spoil the smallest of thing from it but it was my second favorite story for sure!
Stars: 3 Stars Format: Print Series: Stand Alone Steam Level:
CW: blood,
This the same creator of Futaribeya A Room for Two and it is why I picked this manga up.
Quick Thoughts: - I love Yukiko’s art style, it’s just so cute. It works great with adorable stories and when juxtaposed with a serious storyline, it gives the story a unique feel - Loved the vegetable story. I would have happily read a whole book with just these two ladies - I was not expecting the Unbreakable Sugar Bowl story. It’s a perfect example of that cutesy style enhancing a serious storyline - I absolutely adore stories that don’t pull their punches with characters. This was wonderfully shown in the Unbreakable Sugar Bowl. The author doesn’t dial back on sadist and masochist characters - The Monster story was a bit lackluster, which was disappointing since I was excited for that one - The reason I only gave this three stars is that the flow of stories felt disjointed. Yes, this is a short story collection but it felt like a dumping ground of works from all over the place. It didn’t have a theme beyond wlw. That is something I expect from an anthology featuring a bunch of different artists, not a single person’s own book
Overall this was fun. I don’t see myself picking this up again but it wasn’t bad just middle of the road.
This is a hard one to rate... I enjoyed it very much, but it also had many moments that either were problematic or just made me really uncomfortable (In a bad way). The BDSM themed elements for example weren't always handled great. (For example the boss forcing her colleague to vomit, without any prior discussion of boundaries or time to build up trust etc). Also, some of the romantic relationships really felt like they happened completely out of nowhere.
Generally, I rarely like short story collections. I guess the fact that I still gave this one three stars, and even contemplated giving it four, says something about the quality. I really loved the dialogues and how the characters felt so real and human, despite the stories being very short. The drawings were really pretty as well.
Would I recommend it? Erm, maybe if you don't mind vomit, blood and non-consent. (It's not graphic or anything though, just was not what I expected from the cover)
It was a short read, which mangas normally are. But it is a collection of Yuri short stories. Too short for my opinion. They aren’t bad reads, they are cute and interesting. I wish the author stuck to one story and made each their own manga. They are kinda cut short and leave you meh. I felt like I read the snippets opening to each story, because they didn’t give you any insides to the stories or characters. Nothing really exciting happens. Just meh, not the worst reads but wouldn’t read again or recommend.
Rating this is a bit difficult. Some of the stories I really liked. A couple of them were kind of out there and I didn't like as much. I wish the last story was longer, that was a really interesting concept. The art was lovely, and the writing was good, though at least a couple weren't really my cup of tea.
A collection of stories exploring some quite unconventional links - this was a weird mix of cute girls and graphic themes which I didn't hate, I didn't love the mixture of cutesie stuff alongside the weirdly specific content ... It felt a bit strange.
Also because they were separate stories I kept confusing characters and didn't really feel like I connected to anyone.
I didn’t know this was a collection of short stories, I saw it was wlw and I saw the beautiful cover and thought yes and bought it. A few of the stories were enjoyable though and it’d be awesome to see more of those stories (the boss and employee bdsm story and the first story). The art style is amazing also.
Yuri anthologies are good; I like little short manga romance bites. Also, there's actual biting, if that's a thing you're into. :) And various other kinky dynamics.
