Donna Grant has done it again! Done what you say? Wrote an amazing book I say!

Thank you to Donna Grant and Goodreads for allowing me this opportunity to read and enjoy this book!!

Drama ✔️
Action ✔️
Adventure ✔️
Intrigue ✔️
Romance ✔️
Suspense ✔️
Spice✔️ (just enough to keep you interested without being grossly vulgar)

I want to start by saying thank you to Melissa B. Who got me hooked on Grants books back in 2010 with the release of Dangerous Highlander when I received an autographed copy of the book. 13 years later I still love her books. @Donna Grant, if you ever need ARC readers, I very enthusiastically volunteer!!

Asa is a beautiful Norse witch whose been living in the highlands of Scotland while her sister Liss is keeping the home fires burning back in Norway. Unbeknownst to Asa her sister is also a witch that has kept her powers hidden for years because of a horrible Norseman named Hosvir.

Hosvir wants a power and wealth and needs a powerful witch by his side as his wife. He wants ASA.

Rory being different from his family, a strong Scottish clan has taken to living in Norway. Learning how witches are most revered there. He comes across Liss and the 2 quickly become great friends. It is then that Liss asks Rory for his help to save her sister Asa from Hosvir who will stop at nothing in attaining Ada.

Rory having a score to settle with Hosvir quickly agrees to help Liss and Asa be rid of the threat of Hosvir. Rory gets an image of Asa sent to him by Liss so that he will recognize her. It is then that Rory decides he will do anything, including risk his life to save Asa because upon initially seeing Asa in his mind, he knows he loves her and wants her for himself.

He really does risk his life as once he’s in his homeland his only family, mostly cousins, sets upon him and gravely injures him. With is last few breaths he’s able to warn Asa of the impending danger, but Asa will not let this handsome specimen of a man die because he was trying to save and warn her.

The book only gets better from there. I hope I’ve interested you enough that you’ll want to read this steady paced book. It’s worth it even if I am a bit biased. The ending is worth it.

5/5 🌟 from me!!

Donna Grant has returned with the second book in the Kindred: The Fated series. After enjoying the first book of the series, I was very interested to see what Donna Grant has is store for her readers this time.

With RUIN, I was surprised by the opening as it puts Rory, the hero, in a different light than I expected. We see him vulnerable and when you think about what he’s been through and how he is now returning to Scotland, it made me very interested in his character.

Asa is a witch and I loved following her around and being in her head. I find that with most of Grant’s heroines, they are unique and sensible, never doing anything too foolish. Although things do take a turn in the book, I always find that I never get frustrated or annoyed by any of Grant’s heroines and Asa is no expection. There’s always something to love about her style of heroines.

RUIN is a book that changes its pace often. Staring off slow and then picking up and then slowing down again. It was interesting to read and now, I’m more curious about what’s to come with this series.

Asa’s journey
Ruin is the second book of Donna Grant’s Kindred: The Fated series (a spinoff of her Kindred series.)
In this book, we find Asa, who was a part of the original Kindred series. She escaped the devastation of her home, the home Edra and Radnar built to help train witches, and those without magic, to defend themselves against the Coven. She feels guilty that she was not there to help defend the home she found in Scotland, but now she feels she must return to her original home in Norway, and the little sister she left behind. She felt she was able to leave Liss because her sister had no magic and would be safer without Asa around. It turns out Liss does have magic and has sent Rory, a highlander who has spent time fighting with Vikings, to warn Asa that a chieftain has become obsessed with Asa, and that he a formidable witch on his side.
Rory & Asa must navigate Scotland, and their growing attraction to each other, on their quest to confront the chieftain, Hosvir, and his witch, hopefully with the help of someone from the Varroki. Asa knew that their best bet to confront Hosvir’s witch, Dagny, was in a Witch’s Grove. Luckily, Jarrin received Asa’s request for help and he & Helena journey to assist Rory & Asa. None of them were prepared for who would show in that Witches’ Grove. Hosvir was defeated, but his witch’s true identity will change everything for our characters going forward.
The Kindred: The Fated, has given Donna Grant’s fans of the original Kindred series the opportunity to learn more about characters whose fates were left up in the air at the end of that series. As usual, the road is never direct, but the journey is always full of surprises!

🤔

What to say???? It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything to rave over either. It could have been a full length novel with a bit of artful storytelling, more plot, and better characterisation. Felt very rushed.

Asa is a witch but not just any witch, she is a descendant from the very first witch. That makes her strong, powerful and wanted by all. Asa can heal and speak with animals. She meets a man who is very wounded and all he says is " run ". But she cannot just leave him so she heals him. Rory knows her sister and was sent to warn her of the evil coming for her. His family thinks he's dead because some friends and cousins tried to kill him. A chieftain and a witch are coming. The chieftain wants Asa for his bride and the witch will make sure he gets what he wants. Asa and Rory team up to take them down but in doing so they can't fight the attraction they feel. Can they defeat their enemies and live happily ever after?
Very good story. Not very long. Easy to read. Fighting. A little sex. Witches and warlocks. No cliffhangers. Historical. Two people who find love in the middle of running.

Rory, a Highlander, has been sent by Asa’s sister to warn her of impending evil. Asa is a witch but she is the descendant of the First Witch. Rory is stricken by her beauty and immediately sparks fly when they meet. Rory will help Asa fight against Hosvir and his evil witch. There is a surprise at the end I didn’t expect. I loved this story of love, bravery, and loyalty.

A wider field for evil
In this, book 2, we meet two new characters, Asa, a witch from the Viking homelands and Rory Sutherland who is the banished 3rd son of the Laird of Sutherland of Scotland. He has been tasked by Asa’s sister in Norway to find her and warn her of an impending crisis. Traveling from Norway Rory is dying from his wounds after being attacked while hunting Asa. He finds her in Scotland, and collapses after only telling her she must run. Asa has been meandering after having lost everyone who has meant something in her life. She left her home in Norway and now finds herself trying to help this man who is dying on the ground in front of her…. And so, Donna Grant starts weaving another compelling tale in her Kindred universe. An exciting storyline will keep you reading and invested in the main characters, along with new evil in the wilds of Scotland where the Kindred stories are set. Enjoyed this book, with the turns and reappearance of others who are fighting this new evil. I received this ARC from the author through BookFunnel and this is my honest opinion.

I have been waiting for Asa’s book and I was not disappointed.
It was captivating from the very beginning. I really like the mixing of Norse and Celtic cultures and mythologies. This story was fast paced and kept be engaged through the whole thing. The twist at the end I did not see coming and now I really want the next book.

Would I love Asa's magic ability. We get Asa and Rory's story. Read it it in once sitting as I couldn't put it down as I want to know what was gonna happened.

I like the balance of Witch and Highlander, two worlds collide as Rory learned about magic while he was in Norway. Rory searched for Asa to give her heads up on wants happening back home and tells her to run. But Asa doesn't want to and to make a stand as she doesn't want to keep running forever. Rory is injured and Asa heals him. I like their relationship ship as was like a small slow burn as they were both interested in each other. Glad they got together.

We get a surprise from the last book (which I have to read eventually, sorry to many books to keep up with) but you can read this as a standalone as I wasn't confused at all.

I received an arc for my honest review.
P.s I hope this made sense as I've had a light headache from the weather here. Planning on an reread.

The saga of the witches and those out to get them continues in the newest story of the Kindred by Donna Grant. Ruin is the story of Asa, one of the witches that are familiar to those of us that have followed the series since the beginning, a woman that lived through battles and the loss of her friends when the Coven came for them, but never stopped fighting. I was really looking forward not only to her story, but also to finding out more about Malene and hopefully learning what happened to her, but I have to say I wasn’t as thrilled as I was hoping for. Not to say I was disappointed in the story at all, but I was just the tiniest bit letdown that the story was not longer, giving us a more in depth look at Asa and Rory and their relationship and giving us more info on Armir and Malene. Asa is on the fence about staying in Scotland or returning to her belong Norway when a man comes to her, bleeding to death and warning her to run. Never one to leave someone to their deaths when she can help, Asa determines to save Rory, if only to understand who is coming for her, but finding out that she’s being hunted by a powerful witch and former friend determined to make him her wife—whether she likes it or not—is not what she expected. As they work together to try to get to a safe place they can make their stand, Rory and Asa begin to fall for one another and come to want a future together, but they have to defeat the enemy stalking them in order to do that. I liked Asa, she’s a kickass witch, with some serious skills, but she never let all the loss in her past harden her heart or brew hatred in her heart. She is sweet, strong, and willing to do whatever is needed to protect those she loves, but knows how to work with her team in order to reach their goals. Rory was a fascinating character and I would have loved to get to know him more; he obviously had some serious issue with his family, but he was still a good guy and he stood up against evil for what is right, including fighting even almost to the death (more than once) to protect Asa. The passion between them was sweet and the love that developed was obviously meant to last. It was great to see some couples from previous novels and I look forward to seeing more as the series continues, but I really wish the story had been a bit longer (really my only gripe) giving us more time for Rory and Asa to develop together. I am dying for the next book now and hope the wait isn’t too very long. Donna Grant is never fails to grip you by the heart and drag you into her characters’ lives and force you to experience their heartbreak right along with them.

3.75stars—RUIN is the second instalment in Donna Grant’s adult KINDRED: THE FATED erotic, historical, paranormal / fantasy romance series set in the author’s World of the Kindred. This is Norse witch Asa, and Highlander Rory Sutherland. RUIN can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous storyline is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Rory and Asa) RUIN follows the building romance and relationship between Norse witch Asa, and Highlander Rory Sutherland. Norse witch Asa left her homeland of Norway seven years earlier in the search for something more, a search that took her to Scotland where she would find a family, a family that The Coven would destroy. Hoping someday to return to Norway to find her younger sister Lissa, Asa would come upon an injured Highlander, sent to warn Asa about an impending war. Viking Hosvir Ivarsson, and a powerful witch hunt for the bones of the first witch, and Asa is a direct descendant of the witch in question. With Rory by her side, and the help of another powerful witch and warlock, Asa would face down the danger, a danger too familiar to our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship and quick proclamation of love between Asa and Rory, and the potential fall-out as Rory is severely injured trying to protect the woman he loves.

The relationship between Rory and Asa is predicated on a warning. Asa’s sister Lissa has sent Rory to warn our heroine about the witch and men coming to claim our story line heroine. Rory is determined to protect Asa with his life, a life he is willing to sacrifice for the woman he loves. Asa is a powerful healer, and is gifted with the ability to speak to animals but never expected to fall for the injured Highlander.Something about Rory drew Asa like a moth to a flame, a flame that could easily be doused with the swing of a sword. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.

The secondary and supporting characters are limited. We are introduced to Armir, Jarin and Helena, Elin (Rage 1), as well as Hosvir Ivarsson, and his witch Dagny. The requisite evil has many faces.

RUIN is a quick read; a fast paced story of betrayal and vengeance, obsession and greed, acceptance and love. The premise is intriguing and entertaining; the romance is swift and seductive; the characters are powerful and determined.

Witches and Vikings and one hot Highlander, oh my, make for a tense and sizzling read.

Rory Sutherland had traveled to Norway to secure an alliance for his family, but things went horribly wrong with the leader of a village there. He escaped back to Scotland where he was betrayed by his own family. Asa found him on the brink of death. Rory warned her to run and hide from the danger coming for her, but Asa healed his wounds and they stayed together.

A case of insta-lust/love brought Asa and Rory together fairly quickly and then we had the pleasure of seeing them work together as a team to defeat Hosvir and his witch. Rory struggled a bit with the break from his clan and the fact that his father considered him useless. With Asa he felt as if he had found a home again. Asa had an interesting range of powers that she used effectively. She showed time and again that she cared deeply, not just about Rory, but also the animals she could talk to, and through references to her good deeds in the past. I quite liked the two of them together.

As our group of heroes made their preparations, the writing creating sufficient tension to make the wait quite nerve-wracking. The odds seemed overwhelmingly against them and it was difficult to imagine how the battle would unfold. And then the highly anticipated battle threw new twists into the mix.

The warriors and witches from Norway were unexpected and provided an interesting slant to the story. Asa and Rory asked the very same questions I had in the aftermath of the battle. I do hope more will be revealed soon.

I can recommend this book and this series if you like fantasy with steamy romance. Ruin stands well on its own. It doesn’t tie in with the events of Rage, other than it takes place in the same world and slightly after the events of the first book.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Exceptional Storytelling

Once again Donna Grant has enthralled me with her magical words. RUIN, book #2 in the Kindred: Fated series, was a thrilling, mesmerizing, action-filled journey from the first word to the last. It is the story of Asa and Rory.

Asa is special, a descendant of the first witches, and she is being sought after by Hosvir, a Viking Chieftain, who wants her as his wife. As a result, she is in danger. Her sister Lissa, who is in Norway, sends Rory Sutherland, a Scottish warrior, with a message of impending danger. When a wounded Rory finally delivers his message of "run" to Asa, she decides to remain and heal him, as she's tired of running. They join forces to fight the enemy, along with some other favourite previous characters. Who will win the battle? Who will survive?

I oved both Asa and Rory. Asa was incredible, with powers beyond belief, yet she often doubted herself. Rory is a fighter, a man who stands up for his beliefs. When Asa and Rory meet their attraction and chemistry are instant, they are drawn to each other, they are meant to be together. Will they get their HEA?

Donna Grant has again held me spellbound. I knew that when her readers would finally be given Asa's story it would be mouthwatering, what I didn't realise was just how mouthwatering and exceptional it would be. Another EPIC adventure. Now to wait for Reign.

Ruin is a fast pace, hanging onto the edge of your seat type of read. Donna Grant once again captivates her readers with this short story.

Asa is a powerful witch, who carries a very important bloodline. Asa was part of the original kindred series, she escaped the destruction of the place that became her home after leaving her family. Asa is beginning to work her way back to her sister that she had to leave behind when she knows something is not quite right.

Rory is a man of his word. He’s loyal and devoted. And absolutely amazing with a sword. If only his father could see the talents that he possesses. Rory makes a promise to a friend that he will warn her sister of the danger that is on her tail. Even when wounded he defeats the odds to be able to warn Asa of the danger that is coming. What he didn’t count on was the feelings he had the moment that he saw her. Or then again maybe he did.

Talk about instant connection in chemistry. Asa and Rory are amazing together from the moment they meet. Asa couldn’t believe that someone would go through what this man did to give her a warning to run. Not able to leave him lying there to die she uses her abilities to get them both out of there. They soon realize that there is a connection between them, even though they do try to fight it. With danger on their tail and a bond forming these two will fight in every way to be able to get rid of the evil, and somehow end up together. This is a quick read, but yet it packs a powerful punch. Donna Grant knows how to give her readers a thoroughly entertaining story.

Asa is a descendant of the First Witch’s sister. She wants to reunite with her younger sister in Norway. However, Asa encounters a gravely wounded Highlander who warns her of danger. She prepares for the threat coming for her. Can Asa defeat the powerful witch targeting her? Will she get a chance to see her beloved sister again?

Rory Sutherland is the banished third son of the Laird of the Sutherlands. He returns to Scotland to search for Asa and warn her of the danger coming. Rory decides to help Asa fight the enemies who want her only for her special bloodline. Can Rory defeat the Viking chieftain who intends to possess Asa? Will he find the place he truly belongs?

There is only one nitpick I have about Rory. I wanted to know more about his connection with Yggdrasil. I felt that angle should have been explored more in the story. There must be a mystical reason why the tree appeared to him twice, unless the author plans to reveal that in future books.

RUIN is the second book in Donna Grant’s paranormal-historical romance series, KINDRED: THE FATED, a spinoff from her five-book series THE KINDRED. The story can standalone. The prior series sets up the world where witches reside, why they are hated, and the factions among them. I am behind on both series, but it did not hinder my ability to follow the story’s plot. The author does a good job summarizing the important parts of the previous books.

The second installment of this trilogy is exceptional! Not to mention a wild ride that has one heck of a shocker. It's so shocking it will rock you to your core. Especially if you connect to the characters as I do.

This is Asa and Rory's story with some very welcomed special guests. The enemies are Hosvir a viking and an extremely powerful witch named "Dagny." Plus 60 viking warriors.

It all starts when a near dead man (Rory) warns Asa to run. She, like any stubborn woman, refuses and instead, gets him out of where he's hiding so she can heal him. Once healed, he tells her that the witch is coming to make her submit to Hosvir and become his wife. All because she is a descendant of the First Witch. Asa knows she has to stop both "Dangy" and Hosvir or they will go after her sister Liss next. A bloody battle ensues and even Armir shows up. Do they win the battle? Do Asa and Rory get a HEA? Why did Armir show up out of the blue? You must read to find out.

This is filled with happiness and agonizing sorrow, love and betrayal, battle royals and true friendship. And let's not forget the shocker towards the end.

5 stars doesn't cut it. This is a 10+ star book at least! Donna Grant has such a wonderful writing style that captivates the read immediately, to the point of not wanting to put the book down until it's finished.

Asa, a witch, is making plans to go back to Norway to get her sister, when she comes upon an injured man. He is gravely injured but she heals him.

Rory knows who she is. Asa's sister asked Rory to look for her as danger was coming for her. The Norwegian ruler's son, Hosvir and a very strong witch are coming to get her and she will be forced to become Hosvir's bride. He has come to save her from that fate.

As soon as Rory sees Asa, he knows she is his destined mate. Will she feel the same?

Asa and Rory travel, their destination being the Witches Grove. There they will receive aid from the Varocki's who are witches and warlocks.
They talk about their lives which only hastens the attraction between them.

Will they reach their destination before the Norwegian's catch up? Will the Varocki be able to help? Will they ever be together?

As usual, Ms Grant draws you into the story from the first pages! You could feel the bond between Asa and Rory and it makes you want to cheer for their success!

I loved the story, needless to say. I was almost jealous of the closeness between Asa and Rory, it was so natural. What they were willing to do for one another was awesome and they knew they would always be together whether in this life or another.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

In this next entry in the Kindred-Fated series, witch Asa had planned to leave Scotland for Norway to rescue her sister from those who would force her into marriage and use her against Asa. Until she came upon an injured Scottish warrior injured, close to death and urging her to run. Rory fought to stay conscious until he he could issue the warning. Unwilling to leave him to die, Asa gathers manages to get him to safety where she uses her magic to heal him. Rory then shares the story of the danger that is coming for Asa. She refuses to run, but insists the only way past the danger is to fight. So they proceed to make plans to face the danger head on. When the time came, Asa was read for the fight, but she certainly was prepared when she discovered just who was leading the enemy .

This is a fast paced, engaging story. Asa, in addition to being a witch, proves she's a warrior in her own right. The author has given us a strong, courageous female character with a true warrior's instinct. Rory's warrior blood urges him to be the protector, but he can't help but admire Asa's courage and respect her commitment to the fight. This is a captivating story of two solitary individuals who discover love makes them stronger.
