Wilde Contracts #1

Find the Jinn

Rate this book
Wilde Contract Killing and Fish Training, how can I help you?

Murder contract? Piece of cake.

Find a jinn? No problem.

New necromancy powers while being followed by an unwanted vampire bodyguard?

Not so much.

Trained to handle even the most fierce undead, Dallas Wilde took out a powerful necromancer without breaking a sweat. Okay, that’s a lie – there was tons of sweat, but he was victorious all the same.

Unfortunately, killing a necromancer comes with some repercussions.

Broody, annoying, vampire repercussions and new abilities to resurrect the dead.

Can Dallas navigate his blood-sucking bodyguard, new powers, feelings for his attractive client and still handle his contract in time to pay his very, very late rent – all while trying not to get super murdered in the process?

Let’s hope so.

Find the Jinn is the first contract in a trilogy of death, pining, dark magic and a grumpy fish named Kevin.

Maz Maddox is the odd lovechild between a unicorn, dinosaur and vampire. The outcome is a human-like figure who inherited aspects of all three. She is a champion of logic and science, adores beauty and whimsy, and has a slight streak of darkness that dances the line of genius and insanity.

Residing in the wild land of cowboy boots and Shiner beer, Maz spends her time with her two dogs and a husband who she adores, and is constantly demanding that science gives her a pocket sized triceratops. The efforts of these demands have yet to be fulfilled.

When she’s not pining over the lack of chihuahua sized ornithischia, she’s a writer who loves crafting adventures tales sprinkled with humor, a hefty helping of romance, and topped with a happy ending.

This story felt super-familiar to me and I (eventually) figured out that it was a continuation of a free, short prequel called "Kill the Messenger (Wilde Contracts #0.5)".

Dallas, the owner of Wilde Contract Killing and Fish Training, a side character from the prequel book, was the MC here and he was still his same odd, quirky, awesome self.

[My take on Dallas...]

The bad guy from the prequel did meet his end in the first chapters, but as the blurb says, killing him left Dallas with the necromancer's power and a bodyguard thrall vampire that he didn't anticipate. Or want.

After that, the main thrust of the story was about the assassination job that Dallas took to kill a Jinn in hiding for an incubus client / fuck buddy of his, after the Jinn stole millions in a business deal.

I loved every moment of the quirkiness and non-stop action in this book, but did find the "romance" aspects a bit confusing, as this installment did absolutely nothing to clarify if the final pairing would be between Dallas and Zane, his vampire thrall, or with Sias, his incubus / fuck buddy client.

As for steam, that mostly consisted of a quick fuck in a bathroom stall and a VERY out-in-the-open three-way (ish?) scene at an upscale, VIP-only orgy, the last of which I found slightly... disturbing.

Dallas' Siamese fighting fish, Kevin, was really entertaining, too, even though the story was a little skimpy on actual "fish training", but the bit at the end about Kevin's very own made me laugh pretty hard.

As always, Maz Maddox's stories are consistently weird and hilarious, without getting too OTT, so I'll definitely be continuing this series.

I'd rate it at around 4.25 stars and highly recommend to fans of her previous work, with the caveat that this isn't what I'd call a romance. At least not by the end of this particular book.

If you enjoyed reading this author's RELIC series, then you will absolutely love this weird, over the top and hilarious book! The release of the final book in a few days, demanded a reread and I still love it. The banter between Dallas and his mistakenly-magically-bonded vampire bodyguard Zane are laugh out loud inducing. AND THEN WE GOT BARNABY, the erotic antiquities connoisseur / eccentric landlord / asexual incubus, AKA. THE BEST CHARACTER STILL🤍

What a fun read!!!!!
I loved Dallas’ friendship with Kevin, his fish. Hilarious!

I am lost as to WHO is exactly his love interest? But I kind of want Zane to end up with the asexual incubus, Barnaby’s whole existence is HELLA interesting!

"You're a fucking idiot."

"But I'm
your idiot." I batted my lashes at him. "Now hurry up. I got shit to do, and you're still ugly."

🎵 can you feel the love tonight? 🎵 don't mind me, i'm just living for these interactions 🥰🥰🥰

if you're game for kooky humor of the entertaining & endearing sort, consider adding this to your tbr because boy is it applied with a liberal & idiosyncratic hand. i genuinely have no idea how to describe this book in a nutshell better than the all-encompassing blurb, so i'll stick to introducing a few mainstays of the cast so you can get a small taste of the kind of shenanigans to expect during the course of the story.

- Dallas: our vampire killer/professional assassin/fish trainer mc with an arsenal of magical knickknacks to aid him on his missions (including a tiny cartoon penis kekdog) and who is as "Wilde" as his last name implies.

"Richard Thundercock?" Reynold's bored voice called, glaring at me as I pushed to my feet.

"It is I." I made sure to give a flourish as I bowed. "The Thundercock you seek."

- Zane: the vampire servant bodyguard obligated to keep Dallas alive and safe for his own sake after he finds himself reluctantly bound to this new master

- Sias: the exceptionally attractive client who stirs all kinds of feelings in Dallas's loins

- Kevin: Dallas's judgey pet betta fish who means more than the world to him

- Barnaby: the asexual landlord with a passion for erotic antiquities

as i said, this barely scratches the surface of a tale you just have to read to believe, trust fall style. while the flood of new terms at the start had me scrambling to catch up, the dynamic between Dallas and Zane won me over - from the grudging acceptance of their new arrangement to animosity bathed in a sweet edge to sensual blood drinking, me likey 😏

as the first book of a trilogy, it's no surprise we're left on a HFN note, but it did its job in whetting my appetite for more. i'm eager to discover the additional layers to this world, the characters' backgrounds, and the outcome of this slow burn relationship.

full disclosure: i have no clue whether the author is planning a ménage romance as the end game or not, but if it helps, i haven't sent any of the contenders to the timeout corner just yet 😆 there is also a prequel from the ybbb giveaway called "Kill Your Messenger" that introduces the world which i forgot to check out beforehand. not necessary, but it gives further context to a certain pairing that makes an appearance.

Thank you to GRR and the publisher for providing an advanced copy of the book. This is my honest review :)

Find the Jinn by Maz Maddox
Wilde Contracts series #1. Fantasy, paranormal M-M romance. Trilogy. Romantic erotica.
Dallas Wilde is used to taking contracts killing vampires, necromancers and whatever else needs killing. The only companion in his life is his fish named Kevin. When Dallas kills a necromancer, he finds himself in a precarious position. Now he’s a necromancer and he has a vampire in thrall. How could that happen?
Dallas still needs to pay his rent, and since Kevin won’t help, Dallas needs to track down and kill the Jinn that got him in this mess. While lusting after his client.
What a mess.

Ridiculous and steamy hot.
Loved Kevin and his expressions.
Looking forward to learning more about Dallas, Kevin and where this could possibly go.

Find the Jinn is an urban fantasy set in a world with a plethora of paranormal beings. It's the first in the series and we get introduced to some potential love interests (although I already have my favourite and who I want Dallas to end up with!). It's more urban fantasy with a romantic side plot, which I enjoyed. There's nice world-building and plot, with an interesting cast of characters that I'm looking forward to returning to.

Our main character is Dallas, who finds himself with a vampire servant bodyguard. He's a contract killer and his latest case has him tracking down a Jinn. The job has him finding himself in multiple near-death situations as well as in some spicy encounters.

However, the star of the show is naturally his fish Kevin.

Book 1 of an urban fantasy/adventure trilogy with the tiniest sprinkle of m+m+m romance.

And yes, I deliberately chose to write m+m+m, because neither feels really couple-y to me.

To be honest: had I known it’s a trilogy, and had I known it’s not a romance, I doubt I’d have started reading it. I read and loved this author’s Relic-series, and there we have each book revolving around a different couple, so I kind of expected something similar here. On top of that - it might be urban fantasy with a lot of familiar elements (necromancers, demons and the like), but it’s quite complex nevertheless, with a lot of background and history that we’re kind of thrown into.

Yes, I’ve read the prequel, so it wasn’t all new. Nevertheless, it felt like a lot.

The main character is Dallas Wilde, who’s a contract killer and an exotic fish trainer. Sounds a bit weird? Well, that’s Maz Maddox for you - she has a knack for funny, sarcastic characters and writes breathtakingly fast action scenes. Dallas lives in an apartment rented by Barnaby, the asexual incubus, and has another incubus as a fuckbuddy - Sias, insanely rich and absolutely irresistible with his daddy-vibes.

On top of that, he kind of inherited a vampire-thrall named Zane when killing a necromancer, so there’s your potential love triangle. But as I said - while there’s casual sex, there’s no real romance, and while I like the very slow relationship development between Dallas and Zane, and between Dallas and Sias, I really don’t see any crumb of chemistry between Zane and Sias so far. On top of that - I’m not overly fond of incubi-characters, because all they need to do is amp up their charm and everyone wants to bone them. Doesn’t sound like they really need to put in an effort for anything, right?

As for the plot: Sias contracts Dallas to kill his former business partner, an evil jinn named Omar. And the adventure side of the plot is basically all about hunting him down and killing his before he kills them.

That part I really loved, it’s fast paced, and with an underlying humour that I really dig.

Another thing I loved: listening to Kirt Graves narrating.

Nevertheless- I’m rounding the 3.5 stars down because it could have been SO much better, and I’m always a bit mad when I see wasted potential in a book. I’ll probably still listen to the next book, as reviews seem to unanimously say that it’s better than this one.

— Oh, and by the way, Dallas, you’re a necromancer now. Surprise! —

Who knew that if you kill a necromancer you become one, and inherit their vampire bodyguard? Certainly not Dallas.

In typical Maz Maddox fashion, this read was wacky and fun, action-filled and with a splash of sexiness.
There is a bit of a love triangle going on, with a very slow burn either way. Towards the end we still don’t know who the main love interest is — sexy fuck-buddy/client incubus, or his new broody and dark vampire bodyguard (guess who I’m rooting for).

“I have a vampire servant.” “Body. Guard.” “This is the best day of my life.” He pinched his nose again in agony at my happiness. “I don’t know what to do with myself.”

Despite the action, the plot felt a little slow at times. Hopefully, book two picks up a bit more. This isn’t much of a romance, but the sexy scenes that were present were very much worth it. And I also really enjoyed the banter between Dallas and Zane.

“I was starting to think you weren’t an asshole.”
“I’m glad I could clear that up for you.”

After about the 60% mark, I started to get into the story more, so I’m definitely intrigued enough to continue to follow Dallas and his adventures.

CW and tropes (spoilers):
* Monster hunter
* Love triangle?
* Slow burn
* on page SH (non intentional?)
* Coming untouched scene
* Public sex
* Magic cock ring

Look... the narrator did a good job with the audio for this one, but I was about 60% in when I finally realized, oh, this isn't a romance book... at all. Not what I was looking for. Plus, the kind of humor in this book just doesn't hit for me.

As a huge fan of Maz Maddox’s RELIC series, Stallion Ridge series and everything else I’ve read by her, I was super excited to see she’s started a new series! On the one hand, Find the Jinn was exactly what I expected from Maddox: solid, humorous, captivating writing, world building and story telling and enticing, entertaining characters. On the other hand, it was completely unexpected: it didn’t read as a romance to me, at least not so far in this installment of the series. I wouldn’t even categorize it as slow burn. Yet. And honestly, I’m not sure which characters will be at the center of the romance going forward. That said, it absolutely has the bones of an epic romance and I am definitely feelin it!

Where this story really shines is in its gritty, grungy, morally grey underbelly and it’s character interactions. Maddox does a fantastic job of painting this world in all its dark and dirty glory, I could see and smell and feel the blood, gore, guts and filth. It’s creepily atmospheric but infused with enough humor that it didn’t feel as heavy as it might have due to the character interactions that were wacky as well as intriguing and compelling. And I don’t just mean the interactions between Dallas and Zane either, but between Dallas and Barnaby, and Zane and Barnaby, and Dallas and Sias, and especially between Dallas and Kevin.

A bit of a heads up here: while the first 15% is by no means slow, I wasn’t immediately hooked and actually questioned sticking with it, even though it’s Maddox, whose worlds and stories I love. It felt sacrilegious to even consider DNFing. Knowing Alexandra is also a huge Maddox fan and had read it, I sought out her review when I was at 10%ish and decided I’d push on. I’m so happy I did. So thanks Alexandra! And if you find yourself struggling in the beginning, my advice is to at least get to 15%+. In my opinion, it picks up significantly past that point.

I now eagerly await the next in the series! The ending of Find the Jinn is satisfying, it does NOT end on a cliffhanger but there are still many unanswered questions. I’m invested in knowing more of Dallas’ backstory and history. I’m invested in seeing where Maddox will take us with Dallas and Zane and Sias, and with Kevin and Twig too.

Edited to add after reading the freebie prequel Kill the Messenger (Wilde Contracts #0.5) available at Prolific Works here: https://claims.prolificworks.com/gg/Y...

While technically it’s not essential or necessary to read Kill the Messenger before reading Find the Jinn, had I done so, I suspect I would not have struggled through the beginning of Find the Jinn the way I did. I believe I’d have started out more invested as well as more acclimated to this world. Plus I’d have had more insight to some of the lesser side characters. Reading Kill the Messenger makes me want to read Find the Jinn again even though I just finished it yesterday 🤣 I’ll put that reread off until the next book in the series comes out however, it’ll be good to read them all at once.

This is a bit of an odd one to rate given it’s the first book in a trilogy and I suspect that a lot what was missing for me would be rectified with more story and development. I think that this if probably a soft 4 star read (maybe like a 3.75 rounded up). Which is a shame cause this story has all the elements for something that should make me feral and I am left just feeling kind of beige about it.

The concept of this world is so fun. Dallas Wilde is a human assassin of supernatural creatures for hire. When a job to kill a nasty Necromancer goes awry he ends up with not just the inherited mysterious necromancy powers but also a handsome vampire thrall bodyguard following his every move.

Dallas, along with the vampire, Zane, are then contracted for a job to kill a Jinn by Dallas’ friend/client with benefits, the beautiful incubus Sias. This leads to many sexy adventures and also some not so sexy adventures.

I am remaining tentatively hopeful that what is being set up here is a real love triangle where everyone is involved together. You can kind of get a bit of a sense that it could be heading that way and I always vastly prefer that and find it a more interesting dynamic then where the MC is made to pick one. I think that the relationships between Dallas, Zane and Sias has a lot of potential, but in this installment it kind of felt a little flat for me, possibly cause the relationships haven’t all been given sufficient development to hook me in.

I enjoyed that the world building here had some less frequently used supernatural creatures with the world including incubi and succubi, oni’s, jinn’s and imps. I have strangely enough been of on the look out for oni stories but they seem pretty rare, so this was a fun surprise.

I am definitely invested enough to want to continue on and see how this story plays out luke warm feelings aside.

Slight spoilers for content warnings.

This book is not heavy on sex scenes although features a lot of sex. There is an on page sex scene included between the MC and neither of the proposed love interests (sex is treated very casually throughout this book and this interaction specifically). There is also a kind of three way between the MCs in the middle of an orgy. As you do. I know that this might not be the cup of tea for a lot of people looking for paranormal romances so here’s your heads up if that doesn’t tickle your fancy.

Great start to a series, not much romance happens but some sexy time does occur haha

This is more of a slow burn hoping this becomes an MMM 🤞🏼🤞🏼 I loved Dallas and Zane’s dynamic and mix in Sias and we have 😘👌 haha

Kirt Graves does a great job with the narration, (it’s on Scribd btw), hope book two comes out soon but I don’t see it on goodreads anywhere!

“Murder was my day job, fish training my hobby, but my passions were sex, good food, and hunting vampires.”

- Urban fantasy
- Part of a series
- Slow burn - no romantic relationship yet
- Heavy on the world building
- Funny and action fuelled
- Steamy
- Single POV ( first person)
- Amazing writing, good plot, lovable characters
- No cliffhanger, but not the very end either.

I would recommend to read the book 0,5, Kill the Messenger before start this. ( It’s can be download from the author’s website).

I really enjoyed the book, its main focus is the world building and the beginning of the characters’ relationships. It’s funny and entertaining, with hot scenes, and adventurous investigation case. Perfect read for a break from the real world.

I’ve received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

Let’s start with the biggest concern: this book should be marked as dark. Comedy, yes, but definitely dark. It was something that I wasn't expecting, and I had to stop reading it for a couple of weeks.

🌙 In general, I’m not a fan of dark/noir worldbuilding. Filth, crimson, sins, and decadence aren’t my thing, especially when they are treated as a base for everything else. That being said, the world created by the author was unique and new. There were familiar elements, and traits known from other urban fantasy books, but a lot was just new and shiny. (Or new and filthy, I guess.) Different species, with their own sexual needs, physical features, magic, and powers, were fascinating. There were a lot of neon colors, and a lot of darkness, the perfect combination for a new-noir story.
🌙 I hated the MC. I’m sorry, but Dallas is insufferable. The mix of humor, unprocessed trauma, and being horny all the time, with a great lack of knowledge or common sense made him look like a stupid teenager. And I dislike teenagers. We get to know the world from his POV, his relationships with other people, his view towards things, and his traumatic experiences, and it’s one of the most headache-offering rides that I endured. His decisions make no sense, his lack of empathy towards others is triggering, and his repressed emotions make me want to hit him with a table. He jumps into the action, never considering what price he will pay for that.
And yes, I know it’s a character trait (I hope it's well-motivated because it’s only the first book in the series and we don't really get to know his reasons). It still makes me hate Dallas with my whole heart.
🌙 The plot sometimes made no sense. There were instances when I had to stop reading and try to understand WHY this was the thing that happened. And not only when Dallas was making decisions! Some acts were done only because the author decided it, not because it seemed like a proper development.
🌙 There is a semi-love triangle. I don’t think it will get resolved in another way than becoming a polygamous relationship - but it’s not clearly stated, so it can go anywhere I guess. I’m sad to say, it’s unhealthy.
🌙 Zane is the most likable person in this book and the most fascinating one too. I love the subplot with the void! I want a whole book focusing on that, Dallas can just disappear as far as I'm concerned.
Zane looked like he could be a good influence for Dallas - not taking his bullshit, caring (in his own way), actually talking with him, and helping. Sadly, Dallas wasn't really interested in... knowing him as a person. Or as a Thrall. Or just in general.
🌙 Sias… is a very rich and very powerful incubus and behaves like one. It didn’t make me like him - his approach to sex and Dallas, especially during The Orgy (?) Scene made me just disappointed in him. He is far too manipulative and withdrawn to give me enough reasons to like him. The way he uses Dallas and treats him like some kind of pet, without giving him a proper footing in this relationship (even though it’s not romantic, at least not right now), made it icky.
And again, I know it’s the first book in the series. I know there is A LOT of baggage that has to be resolved before any good and healthy relations can happen, but… The powerplay and balance on the edge of non-consent (even when we did read “yes”) gave me shivers.
It should be advertised as a dark romance, that’s for sure.
🌙 It's a book that disappointed me on many levels and provided content that I didn't expect. I wanted to like it, and there were elements that I absolutely loved, but most of the story it was just me being angry or disgusted at MCs, confused with how the plot is developing. Some things are written perfectly, and then things make 0 sense.
🌙 There is no cliffhanger, not really an HFN because there is no romantic relationship going on, but at the same time, we don't really get to understand anything that happened in the book. I ended up with more questions and a lack of will to continue the series. I think I would recommend this book to people who like dark romance, and slow burn, and... will read all books one after another. Without it, it's just a grim episode of a story that we don't know where it's heading.

TW: torture, panic attacks, gore, blood play (? there is a vampire, okay), drug & magic use (with similar effect), cheating & open relationships, corpses and killing (necromancy, remember), and some existential crisis moments

I liked this but it just wasn't holding my attention and it felt like a chore to get through.

There's so much build up and then essentially everything is resolved within less than a chapter? It made the pacing feel off for me.

Also how stupid is Dallas to not understand the whole necromancer thing applies to him when he's the one who explained how it works to begin with?? It was confusing and frustrating that he just seemed to stop knowing what he'd already talked about... Even when Zane explains it to him multiple times, he still doesn't comprehend it or remember it...

Intrigued enough to read the next book but I'm not in any mad rush to get to it.

I'm a big fan of the Maz Maddox's RELIC series so when I saw that they were starting a new paranormal series I jumped at the chance to read it. From the very first chapter chaos seems to ensue. The pacing is GO GO GO for much of the book, but it does slow down a bit towards the end. It pains me to say this, but I really could have used some more worldbuilding. The entire book is in Dallas POV and I didn't even realize he was a human until half way through it. I assumed since he used magical instruments that he was a part of the paranormal community such as a witch or mage or something. I also wasn't totally positive on what humans knew of the paranormal community as well. I settled on that they were aware of other species, but not all of them. It seems Vampires are one of the species that humans mistakenly believe are gone, which causes some pretty dicey situations for Dallas once he gains himself his very own bodyguard vampire named Zane.

Even though we only get Dallas POV, Zane was my favorite. He's been dealt a crappy hand so to speak, but he doesn't spend all his time whining about it. He accepts it and moves on. The moment he showed up at Dallas apartment with a stray kitten I was done for. Alpha male with a hidden sweet side SIGN ME UP! I think my love for Zane may have colored my perception of Dallas a bit as Dallas was basically an asshole to him for the entire book. It made me want to protect that sweet vamp.

Then we have Sias, the billionaire incubus whom Dallas hooks up with on the regular it seems. Jury is still out on that one, but I have a feeling that this whole thing is moving into MMM territory. I liked how he didn't treat Zane as if he was below him so that scored him major points. I also love the fact that his emotions can be seen in the colors his eye change. I just wish that Maddox provided us with a handy little color key so I could know what the green means when he looks at Dallas!

I'm landing on 3.5 stars for this one. I liked it enough to continue with the series. I'm invested in the characters now, even if Dallas irked me a bit. So even if this didn't knock me off my feet, the author did what they aimed to do. Convince me to pick up the next one.

This was surprisingly fun! The humor throughout this worked for me; it was dark and dry, which is always a good time. Vampire bodyguard and assassin who, gasp, inadvertently becomes bonded to the creature he kills. The bantering and bickering of the two of them binded to each other really did add to the story.

Warning to romance readers: the lead MC has explicit sex with multiple other people throughout this book, and this appears to be a slow burn and mystery of who the actual LI will be. No HFN or HEA at the moment.

The plotline and shenanigans in this are entertaining enough that the lack of romance worked, if that makes any sense. There's some murder, some incubus's, horny magic, and a fish named Kevin who is beloved by his owner. Lots of sass, plenty of bickering, an assassin who says whatever is on his mind.

Kirt Graves did an excellent job narrating. It takes a bit of skill to make bickering with yourself sound realistic and humorous.

Well, that was completely non-stop fun! From the very first scene of Find the Jinn, Maz Maddox doesn't stop with the creative characters and their zany interactions. All manner of paranormals, with a vast variety of abilities make for a very enjoyable listen.

Kirt Graves executes a marvelous performance in the audio edition of Find the Jinn. His dry delivery is the perfect complement to Maddox's wacky sense of humor. Lovely!

I swear I wrote a review for this. Oh, well, here we go again...
If you've enjoyed any of Maddox's other books, you'll find the same brand of humor here.

An assassin accidentally inherits necromantic powers and a vampire "familiar."

It was a very fun read and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Fabulous narration.

So, I kinda skimmed the first line of the blurb and left it at that. I don’t know if reading it would have been helpful, but Maz Maddox’s website sure does give some helpful info:

The Wilde Contract Series is an Urban Fantasy series with a slow burn, gay romance that spans three books.

Boy, do I wish I had known that, because then I definitely would have held off for the series to be completed. Books 2 & 3 have TBDs for 2023. While I really enjoyed this, I got a lot of questions and I need answers. And while I do love a slowburn, with how this book ends, on it’s own, the romance takes the backest back burner that there ever was.

There were a few typos, nothing to crazy. I do think maybe there could have been a few more CWs thrown in there. Drug use, murder. And there is sex with random people in this, for those that don’t want the MC having sex with anyone on page outside of the main pairing(s?).

So, really enjoyable. I had quite a few chuckles. Lots of highlights, most of them good. I love Dallas, Zane, Kevin… there’s even an asexual incubus… what more could I want (other than a nice big warning that this is a bit of a cliffhanger).

This was such an unexpected delight. I will listen to Kirt Graves tell me a story about absolutely anything but a contract killer who gets a vampire bodyguard and has sex magic? I ate this up with a spoon. He kills a necromancer and ends up with the surliest of surly vampire thralls as a bodyguard whether they like it or not (and to be clear, they do not). He has a kind of friend with bennies, Sias, who is a succubus and knows how to throw a party. Sias asks him to do a little casual murder and away we go.

I need the sequel like yesterday and will anxiously be watching for news.

Thank you to Libro.FM for a copy in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own.

DNF. MC is basically Ryan Reynold's in Deadpool, except he's gay and horny. The same smartass remarks, inside American humor and action en masse. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

Okay, so lets start by saying that I've always enjoyed Maz's writing, but wow. This was good... I laughed SO MUCH through this whole thing. I genuinely liked all of the characters, the plot, and the humor. A freaking assassin fish trainer? I need to see a training session. I'm dying.

------Spoilers below------

The oooooonly thing I personally didn't love was the drug use and the sex scene with the rando. Not saying it wasn't done well, and honestly it didn't ruin the book in any way... I just really don't enjoy sex scenes outside of the relationship. It's definitely a preference. The drug use was also done well, I just don't enjoy it.

But seriously? I really only shaved .5 off my rating, so I cant wait for more. I need all three of them together NOW. And exclusive. ASAP.

DNF for now. Started listening to this, only to realize it’s basically a love triangle until the 3rd book where it becomes MMM. Audiobooks need to kind of do better at including TWs so I don’t have to work so hard to find them… anyway.. I have to be in a specific mood to do this much relationship angst. I like my MMMs to be more insta-lovey. Hahah. I’ll come back to this though. My mood is just not on this level right now.

Well this was just a ride!

I unabashedly love Maz Maddox - those dinosaur shifter stories just crack me up so I was excited for Dallas after reading the prequel Kill the Messenger.

Dallas hunts demons and other bad entities. He also trains fish, does way too many drugs and is perennially late on his rent. In the process of destroying a necromancer (yes, its the one from the prequel) he finds himself suddenly imbued with said necromancer's powers. And an unwanted Thrall bound to him... 🤣🤣🤣

As we met the Thrall in the prequel, this is just super hilarious!

Dallas has an inconvenient attraction to his client, a burgeoning lack of hatred for his Thrall (who is funny as f*ck - who knew a Thrall was going to be funny?) and and asexual landlord who wants his rent (and the sex crystals). Oh. He also has to kill a jinn who has gotten involved in death magic. No biggie.

Honestly, this was just so much fun! The juxtaposition the author does between the very solid writing and the casual less than verbose at times perspective of Dallas just makes a really good read.

LOVED IT!

DNF 43%

I’m 43% in and there is no speck of romance on the horizon and I’m honestly not even sure who our main character Dallas’ love interest is supposed to be. I might return to this once the series is done because this author writes a lot of fun shit but as of right now I’d prefer to read a typical romance.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Find the Jinn is fast-paced and wild fun with a complicated main character and fascinating potential. Dallas is an hunter turned assassin-cum fish trainer who bit off more than he could chew when he killed an extremely powerful necromancer. When powerful necromancers are killed, their abilities are only returned to the void from which they arise when the proper rituals are done; otherwise, they transfer to whoever killed the necromancer, fine print Dallas failed to read. Dallas is his own worst enemy and is as infuriating as he is interesting. The only connection Dallas allows himself is with his best friend Kevin—the beta fish. He’s allergic to deep emotion and runs away from the emotional and/or complicated faster than Usain Bolt. Being unable to run away from his bond with Zane and his nightmares being on a hair trigger makes him even more reckless and avoidant, and Zane is forced to save him from himself many times.

This whirlwind of chaos and Maddox’s cheeky, dark humor are captured well by Kirt Graves’ narration.

Oh, I enjoyed this so much. Dallas Wilde is such a beautifully chaotic disaster, and I loved it. His antics provided great entertainment. The plot was interesting, and the world-building was definitely intriguing. I really like how Maz Maddox approached what we know of vampires and made it their own. I was hooked by the adventure and stayed for the even more interesting characters. Dallas is a great MC to experience the story through. We also have his vampire Thrall, Zane, whose dry sense of humor spoke to me. He should get a gold medal for the amount of patience he has for Dallas' shenanigans. We also have the mysterious Sias. The incubus friend with benefits of Dallas, who brings on Dallas to investigate for him. Then, oddly enough, we have the sassy betta fish, Kevin. Who knew a fish could become such a fun side character. All in all, this was a great time and a great introduction to this trilogy. The adventure is great, the humor had me laughing, and the characters are just so interesting. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book.

If you're up for a wild ride filled with quirky humour and charming eccentricities, "Find the Jinn" by Maz Maddox should definitely be on your reading list. This book is brimming with a unique and whimsical style that’s hard to capture in a brief summary, so let me give you a glimpse of what to expect through some key characters and their escapades.

Set in a world brimming with fantastical elements, the story follows Dallas Wilde, a human assassin specializing in supernatural beings and the training of fish. After a mission to eliminate a malevolent Necromancer goes awry, Dallas finds himself not only inheriting mysterious necromantic powers but also acquiring a dashing vampire thrall named Zane, who becomes his ever-present bodyguard.

The plot thickens when Dallas and Zane are enlisted by Dallas’ friend and occasional lover, the captivating incubus Sias, to hunt down a Jinn. This quest leads them through a series of thrilling, and sometimes steamy, adventures. While the book leaves some questions about future romantic developments open, the dynamic among Dallas, Zane, and Sias is definitely intriguing. I called each of them asshat at least twice, and then there's a fish called Kevin, who seems to have an equally mean streak.
