Rate this book

Vasily Mahanenko is a fantasy author working in the new genre of LitRPG - the MMO-based fantasy and sci fi. His Way of the Shaman series took Russian literature by storm in 2012.

Vasily dipped into his college-days insider knowledge as a hardcore gamer in order to create a believable world of the virtual-reality MMO game. His bestselling series combines fiction and video games, telling the story of Shaman and his friends stuck in the ruthless reality of Barliona. He used his more than ten years' experience as an ERP implementation project manager to approach his writing in a well-organized manner, working to a strict schedule, a set of deadlines and even a budget. At the moment, the series boasts six novels with the seventh one in the works - this time the author expands on stories of Shaman's companions and those who helped and supported him in his trials and tribulations.

The first book of the series has already been translated into English, with more translations to follow, aiming to make the Way of the Shaman series available to the English-language reader in its entirety.

Vasily's other passion is space exploration which is why he now works on a follow-up series entitled Galaktiona. Set in a space-simulator based world, the first book of the series in already finished while Vasily works on its sequel.

This one really showcased how a LitRPG character could be well-rounded in his skills AND be OP. The hacking feature came in really, really handy, but rebalances were obviously necessary. I don't think I mind that too much.

The story itself is very quick-paced and almost always interesting. The elements, as always in LitRPGs, are familiar, but Mahanenko has a real talent when it comes to putting everything together. I personally love the SF/F mix, the ancient setup and discovery of an ancient mystery, and the characters.

I'm really quite amazed at the balance achieved here. It's very pleasant. :)

*Sigh*

This was a great series. It was a story with decent characters and good plot and lots of interesting ups and downs. The MC was enjoyable and not completely bland. The leading lady had a personality and wasn't just a prop. Honestly compared to other stories I've read this story deserves full marks. That being said, I'm pretty sure I'm done. It's not anything against the author of the work. I just have a rule against NERFING...If the MC is in a world with characters multiple leagues higher than them and the writer feels the need to nerf them, I assume the writer is losing hold of the plot or aiming for cheap tension. That and the major party wipe and needless complications near the end just sort of left me with a bad taste in my mouth. But that's just me. If you're the kind of reader who spends all day bellyaching about MCD who are too OP this book is for you. The author just literally dumped the dude back to square one. If you like progress and the thrill of watching a zero become a hero, well honestly this book might still be for you. Yes the author just bumped our hero back to zero territory but maybe that's not a deal breaker for you I mean it wasn't a complete wipe...just a partial one. (The aggravating sort that might make me stop playing an actual game). Like I said the author did a good job here. I'm just over it. Maybe I'll come back after a couple more books but for now this series is a no for me.

Typical Russian grimdark

If you like to gain levels this book is not for you. If you like to work hard then have everything taken from you, this book IS for you. Everone wants to kill him. Half of them have no good reason. Not a feel good story. More like a kick in the ... story.

Bad ending

While nobody expects everything to work out perfectly for an adventure...The ending was bad and merely placed more hardship and impossibility on an already exaggerated storyline. I won't be continuing with this author's books.

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Over the past year it has become apparent that my reviews are somewhat antagonistic and I apologize to those of you that have taken offense. I think I had hoped to change peoples’ minds about reviewing works of art and that seems to have backfired spectacularly. However, I am still going to be true to myself and write what I believe.

To the author: Thank you for this chance to escape reality and enjoy the world you created! Keep up the good work.

To my fellow reviewers: Messaging me and reviewing my reviews is as productive as trying to shovel water out of the ocean. Stop. I get it. Let’s just all live peacefully.

To potential readers: Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

Cheers

I enjoyed Tears of Alron. It is much like the other books in the series where the protagonist continues to grow stronger and a chance to dominate a few battles. There is some intrigue but it isn't very fulfilling. You have a pretty solid idea who it is who is against him but you never really know who the instigator is so you don't getting the satisfaction of guessing correctly.

The worst part I felt in the book was the ending where the protagonist is nerfed. Granted he was getting overpowered (while still feeling underpowered against his real enemies) but the nerfing comes off as very forced on the author's part and doesn't seem to fit well in the book. I guess we will see if Vasily can bring it together in the next book.

Too much

I'm giving 3 stars purely because this and the previous series where a great conceptual take on the "aliens turn world into a game" genre. Plot errors abound as the translation or author cannot keep track of the equipment, stats, rule and requirements of the game system. The MC in both series are absolute idiots who constantly lose their borderline OP gear because they are stupid. Each book is a repeat of having to rebuild their abilities after having done something stupid or being outthought by the current antagonist. Too much fething plot armor and angst. To the point where I cannot even bear to read the next book for Yet Another Miraculous Training Montage.

I received a review copy of this book.
Excellent story, and a great continuation to the series. Lots of new things about the world learned here, and even new academy info as well. If you liked any of the previous books, you'll enjoy this one for sure. If you haven't read any of the previous books, you may not want to start here, because the story picks up where the previous book left off, and many things won't make much sense if you've not read previous installments in the series. I'm looking forward to the next one for sure.

For me, this was an easy fun read that is slightly better than the second book. It is similar enough you'll know if you want to read it.

This book was a slight disappointment for me mainly because it had been building toward going to the academy for a long time (which I was looking forward to) and the time there was minimal. The protagonist is getting close to a superman character but still finds a fairly endless stream of new challenges and constant new abilities.

Overall though its a well-done children's adventure book for gamers.

Fight to Live & Live to Love(lost all above!)

Just an amazing read. Each book is nail bitingly exciting and scary as hell. This was a fight after fight until a fight at the end and I'm still crying with the outcome. I'm in absolute awe of this story of a 12 year old boy that has had to grow up well beyond his years to achieve where he is with his magic.

Just a Wow! read. I'm shuddering trying to write a review because I can't wait to read more.

The blurb about this series really isn't the greatest. Though this is better than the first one. It sounds like it is a lot about the magic school. It really isn't. It really is about another quest which leads to more danger and more information about the founding of this world with a system in it.

The relationship between Valia and Tailyn is sweet and completely innocent.

The book is somewhat addicting. I've read three books in about 24 hours.

Book 3 in the Alchemist series. This one was great. Leading us into intrigue and politics. Not just more killing things way above his level. This book focused more on strategy. Although the end of the book leaves us in a terrible place hopefully Tailyn will be able to find a way out of this one. This book series isn’t as good as Way of the Shaman but still is good. I recommend this to any RPGLit fans out there.

Great book, but author needs to remember what he writes.

Loved the books, brilliant series. Great worldbuilding characters & magic system. Only down fall was the MC used crystals through all three books for personal gain and then at the end of this book all of a sudden he's sentenced for death for using them.

This wasn't too bad. There wasn't much POV of the "herbalist" in this one, so my hatred towards her didn't rise to the forefront.

This book seems to be about redemption of characters, people are slowly changing. Although I don't like how the protagonist changed his distrust he had of everyone in book one.

I will pickup the sequel to see how the story goes.

Book three

Mistakes: I found five mistakes in this book.

Plot: The author found an interesting way to keep the Mc from becoming over powered. He does allow him to get a lot done in the story before he nerfs him though.

Characters: Well everyone is dead, or are they?

This story of a young man who gets lots of perks but is used by the AI god to fix things is a very interesting entertaining fast paced action packed story that I really enjoyed reading.

Good book

While the vast majority of characters in this book are selfish jerks. This book introduced some actual humanity to the main characters.

So basically the world sucks but 5 people seemed to have figured out how to be decent. So keep reading and enjoying the progress.

I really enjoyed all 5 books in this series, I love the continuation of the original series "World of the Changed" It was very interesting to see what the world would become many years after the Game left a planet. Loved it. Thanks.

The magic system is all over the place, and the rules just don’t matter when it comes to the MC…

At this point I'm going with the motion… I have all five books, It's somewhat interesting and they are shot.

So why not?

3/5 it's ok

Two against the empire.

Tailyn and Velia just keep on doing the impossible and in the process making lots of new enemies , Forian is even dumber than I thought and I've lost count of how many times Finiel has outwitted and humiliated him.
