Homes: A Novel
Gram is a grouchy, boring dwarf who spends his days with the only thing he cares about: banging iron into interesting shapes. His jovial friend Faff annoys him; his ridiculous people, the dwarves of the Homes, irritate him; and to top it all off an inconsequential spat with Tad, a mining foreman, lands him a tidy exile for a year and a day. While he is away his land is thrust into rebellion and war, but his exile is not without purpose. There, and on his return, he learns that his people have deep roots, that they are stronger and more noble than he ever thought, and that great history, as well as danger, reside in the ground beneath his feet.
Homes is a fantasy novel that feels both familiar and fresh, immediate and ancient. It is playful and witty and deep as the bowels of the earth.

I ended up in love with this book. I'm not joking or exaggerating when I say that it's my favorite book I've read all year.
It's a simple premise, as pointed out in the Author's Notes in the book itself, Dwarf Fortress meets the hobbit. Sometimes simple stories can become the most fantastic.
The pace of the story is just right, never going too fast or lingering on anything it shouldn't. The writing is great and the characters are all extremely likable as well as memorable.
The world constructed by Kamal is interesting and well fleshed out for a single book. The action is well written and the emotions are realistic.
The only thing I hate about it is that, other than the roleplaying game (The Dig) based on it and a supplement for Quill there isn't anymore to read in this wonderful little world. I would easily buy a whole series of it.

Homes offers a unique story centered on a dwarf named Gram. This book offers adventure and whimsy within a well-crafted world. If you enjoy tabletop gaming, I would highly recommend this book. To everyone else, you will love the characters.
