From a humble family in northern Michigan he was prodded into the spotlight by his lifelong friend Norm Michaels. Yet his real inspiration was his wife Diane, who saw in him what he would chose to the ability to inspire and lead. His story will sometimes inspire, at times sadden or anger, but ultimately uplift everyone who reads it.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat. Turning each page as quickly as I could read.
What truly sets David Gideon apart are its characters. Martin is known for his fully realized and relatable characters, and this novel is no exception. David Gideon, the protagonist, is richly developed—a man both haunted by his past and motivated by a razor-sharp sense of justice. The supporting cast is equally compelling, with dynamic relationships that bring depth and emotional resonance to the plot. Whether it’s allies or antagonists, every character serves a purpose, driving the story forward in meaningful ways.

Inspiring Ascent
I just finished reading this book about David Gideon's life, and wow, it's really something! It's like following someone's life from being a regular school kid to becoming the President of the United States. What's cool about it is how it shows that sometimes other people see greatness in us that we don't see in ourselves. David's wife, Diane, and his best friend, Norm, really push him to do amazing things.
The way the story is written makes it super easy and exciting to read. I thought it would be all about politics, but it's actually about David's whole life - his family, friends, and all the ups and downs he goes through. It's really inspiring and kind of makes you think about what's possible in your own life.
It's not just a story about a guy who becomes president; it’s about real stuff that happens in life and how someone can grow and change over time. The ending is pretty great too – it leaves you feeling good and kind of hopeful. It's definitely a book I'd tell my friends to read, especially if they think politics is boring. This book shows it's about more than just politics – it's about life.

A stout read!
Well, a bit slow to start but it gets interesting when a teacher gives young David some pointer points about becoming a teacher.
It’s quite moving the way he tries to support his friend, Tom.
Things start hotting up when he announces his run for the Senate and faces down a barrage of questions from the press. The realities of public office soon hit home with incessant demands on his time - bills, meetings, interviews, phone calls and votes on NASA’s new Mars project.
As an Irishman I liked the line “there’s always a Kennedy in the Senate.”
A lot of things seemed to flow from Whitefish Point, an actual place in Michigan (I googled it).
His rise to the President’s role is astounding; a bit like a Pope Francis moment. I’ve always liked politics and I’m really liking this book and the way that the work of a Senator differs than that of the President.
Also liked the line you don't have to be Irish to enjoy a good stout.
I’d highly recommend this page turner.

Fresh Take on American Politics
This was truly a breath of fresh air explaining the plight of the political system told through the lens of a great story. David was definitely a character you would want to talk to for an afternoon. The story did champion American individualism which is often under attack.

I struggled to keep an elevated interest in the story but plodded through. I understood the essence of a narrative about a life well-lived but wanted more excitement to encourage faster page turns. I didn’t get that. Still, the effort was good.
