This book gets a 4 or 5 for the wonderful full color views of the Lake and its sunsets, and there are a lot of them! Also, there are many historic views, some in black and white or sepia, of old cabins, old and new timers (mostly hunters or craftsmen), and duck blinds (where hunters hide and hunt from). If you are against animal killing at all, you may want to give this book a pass. If it helps at all, many of these hunters are conservationists who believe in creating and obeying hunting laws in order to conserve nature and the birds. Thus, there are numerous pictures of trophy ducks, often the limit killed.
Wooden duck calls crafted by some famous makers, which can be "blown" or manipulated to call in the ducks, are photographed in abundance. Some of these can't be had for less than 10,000 dollars!!! And we thought the FIFA seats were expensive! These duck calls can be very artistic and beautiful.
The text itself gets 3 or 4 stars. The reading may be dull if you're not into hunting or care for the history of a small area of the state of Tennessee. However, I always love to read about the formation of the lake itself in 1811-1812 from a violent series of earthquakes. Some eye-witness accounts are included. There is also the violence of the night riders during the early 1900's when there was a war between the farmers and hunters of the area and businessmen who wanted to take title to much of the lake area. Hooded farmers got quite violent, with a kidnapping or two, one noted hanging, and another who swam and hiked his way out of his hanging and through this swampy area for two days.
Reelfoot Lake is still a beautiful place with marvelous restaurants, fantastic views, good fishing and birding (with binoculars for me), and cabins to vacation in. You may want to case it out!
