Dazai 1941’de yazdığı Yeni Bir Hamlet’te Norveç-Danimarka arasındaki savaşı aynı yıl patlak veren Amerika-Japonya savaşıyla, melankolik Hamlet’i kendisiyle ve Hamlet’in çevresindeki Gertrude ve Ophelia karakterlerini hayatındaki kadınlarla değiştiriyor. Karakterlerin yer yer dördüncü duvarı yıktığı Yeni Bir Hamlet’te Dazai birçok eserinde olduğu gibi yine kaleminin yoldan çıkmasına ket vurmadan aykırı bir eser yaratıyor.

About the author

Osamu DAZAI (native name: 太宰治, real name Shūji Tsushima) was a Japanese author who is considered one of the foremost fiction writers of 20th-century Japan. A number of his most popular works, such as Shayō (The Setting Sun) and Ningen Shikkaku (No Longer Human), are considered modern-day classics in Japan.
With a semi-autobiographical style and transparency into his personal life, Dazai’s stories have intrigued the minds of many readers. His books also bring about awareness to a number of important topics such as human nature, mental illness, social relationships, and postwar Japan.

The play of Hamlet is infamous for its ambiguity. You see the thoughts of various characters but much is left ambiguous which makes it all the more enthralling. At least, for me it does.

Enter Osamu Dazai, stage left, with his pen ready to crank things up to even higher levels of ambiguity. This is certainly not the edition of Hamlet you're expecting. Sure it follows the plot to some degree, but this time Hamlet is sassy and emotional and much more rational; and his introduction into the play is one that had me bursting at the seems. The characters in this rendition have more depth as their characters are fleshed out. There are no purely evil/good characters and characters do not necessarily play the roles they have been assigned. It's almost like a comedic murder mystery where you are trying to understand who killed the previous king while also trying to understand who is who. And as usual, Dazai throws in his own self into the book. However, this time the game of where's Waldo is much harder. Normally, he incorporates his self into one character. It's often the down-on-his-luck character who's life is no good but whose thoughts are generations ahead of the world he lives in. This time, it's tougher but I think I figured it out.

You see, we are not fictional characters. We don't consistently react to situations in the same way. Yes, we do have dominant traits that shape out personality, but nothing is concrete. The same person who can lead a group of men into war can also break down because he cannot handle the situation. It's human nature to be so fickle in our emotions. This is a type of book you'll only appreciate if you can understand what I am about to say. I think, the author was playing the ultimate game of chess. The version where you're playing with none other than yourself, but your opponent is not 1 person but rather the various aspects of your mind. The different ids that reside in you. Some you show, some you hide. But nonetheless, they make up who you are and you are in constant battle with them. It's draining and tiring but it's something that occurs in many of us. And it's something that occurs in Hamlet both in this version and the original.

I like how Dazai kept the ambiguity in this novel in regards to the characters and plot. I like how he handled the situation with much practicality and rationalization. Things made sense in their own nonsensical way. Or maybe, I've just lost my mind too. xD

The only reason why this isn't a full 5 stars is because of 2 things.
1. The fact that he ended the novel at the friking climax scene. The hell! Did he do that on purpose!?
2. This scene was not in the play:

If you know anything about Osamu Dazai, it's that he was a gloomy guy. He tried to kill himself at least half a dozen times, including three double suicides, two of which left his partner dead. His track record in life wasn't much better -- a drug addict, philanderer, turncoat and spendthrift. So it's no surprise that when he decided to rewrite Hamlet, he should model the central character on himself.

At first, this might sound like an act of hubris -- after all, even though everyone realizes he's an indecisive and whiny jerk, most English speakers see Hamlet as a towering figure of literature, right up there with Achilles (another whiner), Odysseus and King Arthur. But in Dazai's retelling, there's nothing grand about Hamlet. He's a kid on the verge of adulthood who feels betrayed by every adult in his life, while the adults wring their hands with genuine worry about his actions. To complicate things, in this version Ophelia is pregnant, and Hamlet, who seduced her in the hopes of launching a career as a Don Juan, spends most of the play angsting over this, not even noticing the rumors about a ghost until Horatio mentions them to distract him from his problems. Claudius and Gertrude for their part want to bundle Ophelia off to the country where she can give birth without anyone being aware, which just feeds Hamlet's sense that adults want to control him without regard for his own interests.

But don't think the story is dark and ponderous. Dazai gives his story a sardonic tone, with the grandiosity of the proceedings constantly undermined by characters turning out to be petty and low in character. For instance, the farewell speech Polonius gives to Laertes isn't a list of pious, cliched orders, as in Shakespeare, but rather things like, "It's better to be a cheater than a failure -- people will forget that you cheated, but they'll never forget if you fail."

Bu kitabı puanlamak inanılmaz zordu. Gerek konusu gerek yazım tarzı çok yaratıcıydı ve manipülatif/yalancı karakterleri okuyucunun analiz etmek zorunda kalmasını ben çok severim. Fakat o kadar mizojinist bir kitap ki her iki sayfada bir durup derin nefes almam falan gerekti. Anakronizme düşmemeye çok çabalarım, çok fazla eski ve erkekler tarafından yazılmış kitaplar okudum ama bu kitap ayrı bir seviyedeydi ve sabretmek çok zordu. Bu yanı benim için iyi yönlerine baya gölge düşürdü maalesef.

Selamlar, Yeni Bir Hamlet'i bitirdim ama vakitsizlikten elimde sürünen bir kitap olduğu için hiç tat alamadım.

Orijinal Hamlet kurgusuna Japon kültüründen esintiler katan Osamu Dazai'nin kurgusuyla meşhur oyunu bir kez daha okuyoruz.

Ben Hamlet'i üniversite dönemimde ödevim için defalarca kez okumuş birisi olarak oyuna yeterince doymuşum. Bu versiyonu bana fazla geldi.

Yazarın önsözde belirttiği gibi orijinal Hamlet'in ne açıklaması ne de yeniden uyarlamasıdır. Karakterlerin ismi ve olayın geçtiği yer aynı kalkmakla beraber konusunda değişiklikler yapılmıştır. Dazai sadece bu kurguyu kullanarak kendi Hamlet'ini ortaya koymuş. Biçim olarak tiyatro gibi gözükse de roman akıcılığında bir kitap. Orijinal kitapta amca ve anne Hamlet'in babasının ölümünden sorumludur. Bu kitapta da amca öldürmüştür ancak bazı kısımlarda farklılıklar vardır. Orijinal Hamlet'in babasının intikamını almak için akıl hastası gibi davranması bu kitapta daha çok şımarık bir velet gibi gösterilmiş. Kralın adamlarından Polonius'un Hamlet'in kızına aşık olduğu için delirdiğini öne sürer ancak bu kitapta Ophelia Hamletten hamiledir ve Hamlet sadece Don Juan'lığa merak saldığı için onu elde etmiştir. Kimsenin kendisini sevmediğini öne sürerek herkesten şüphe ederek sarayda vakit geçirir. Başka farklılıklar da vardır :orijinal kitapta uzağa gönderilen Polonius'un oğlu değil Hamlet'tir. Karakterler o kadar dengesizdi ki okurken benim de dengem şaştı. Bir dedikleri bir dediklerin tutmuyordu. Olan olayları sadece konuşmalar üzerinden yazmak çok zordur diye düşünüyorum o yüzden takdir ettim ama.

Hamlet’ten tammmamen farklı yeni bir Hamlet. Çok daha dramatik çok daha günümüze uyarlanmış bir versiyon. Hamlet’in ruh hali değişimleri, dramatikliği Dazai’nin kendinden esinlendiğini gösteriyor zaten. Karakterler arası diyaloglar, ilişkiler Shakespeare’in Hamleti ile kıyaslanınca tamamen farklı kalıyor. Dazai’nin önerdiği gibi karşılaştırarak okuyup her farklılıkta “noluyo ya???” diye bakakalmak çok keyifliydi. Hamlette geçen olaylarla burada açık açık dalga geçilmesi de eğlenceliydi. Duygu geçişleri ve sarkastik diyaloglar 10/10

Well I had only read half of it but...considering he was a novelist and not a playwright, I had pretty much like it. especially the little parts where he didn't try to convince his audience that it was an interesting spin off, like Ophelia's speech about being in dephts of depression.
