Mirri thought her life as a midwife and priestess of fertility would carry on in and out in the same old routine for the rest of her life. Little did she know, her newest client has a royal secret that will turn her life upside down.
Iron is captivated by his sister-in-law's midwife at the very first glance. When circumstances demand he and Mirri flee with his newborn nephew, he has to find a balance between his duty to the crown, and his happiness.
This is the first installment in an adult fantasy romance series featuring plus-size heroines, a variety of magical races as the heroes, and just a touch of divine magical intervention.
I spent a lot of this book crying my eyes out, so I had to give it 5 stars. I loved that the FMC, Mirri, had a large port wine mark on her face and neck and was working through a lifetime of insecurity about it. She was competent, brave, and very compassionate but absolutely not a pushover. Iron was stubborn and loving, but also had foot-in-mouth syndrome, which caused some big problems. Both characters were imperfect and did things they regretted, but they worked through their problems with time. Iron helped set Mirri on the path of self acceptance and helped her learn not to hide herself away. Their love story was tender. The broader plot was full of danger and political machinations
Spice: 4/5
Triggers: torture and assault (non-sexual, but brief verbal threat of SA), fatphobic and negative self talk, fatphobic and hateful speech from antagonist, childbirth and pregnancy, poisoning, violence, blood, death of minor, explosion, battle (mostly off page), murder/revenge killing, mention of corpse desecration, death of parent when MC is child, mention of suicidal ideation by side character
I really enjoyed this book, I liked it a lot. It's a Romantasy and the balance between the plot and the romance, is perfect🙌🏻 I liked the romance, building their relationship stronger as the book progresses and with spicy moments😉🔥 And I loved the plot, I needed to read something with major fantasy vibes right now, and this book has fulfilled it: the different races, magic, royal family, clashes... this kind of fantasy vibes with a good worldbuilding ✨😌
Fat rep: She struggles with self-worth. At first I had my doubts but as the book progresses, Mirri was working on her self-esteem and you can see how it's developing. And I think this whole situation is well managed🤗
Mirri is content. A goddess blessed midwife, Mirri has made a happy living for herself helping women, parents, and babies. However, her life is unexpectedly upended after helping an unknown woman who turns out to be a queen in hiding.
After helping to deliver Nadia’s baby, Mirri is whisked away by Nadia’s blue horned brother in law with the baby in her care. There is an usurper hoping to use Nadia to legitimize his claim to the throne, and he will go to any measure, kill anyone, to keep the crown.
Iron and Mirri are seeking out Nadia’s husband- Iron’s brother- to join the revolution looking to recapture Nadia’s throne. Dedicated to keeping the princely babe safe, Mirri keeps her head down and out of the way, but Iron has other ideas…
I really enjoyed this book! What drew me to it originally was the fact that it’s a fantasy with not only a fat heroine, but one who’s also a midwife. I’ve been very vocal about how fantasy heroines don’t always have to wield a sword and be frosty to be strong, and Mirri proves that I’m spades.
Marked by wine colored birthmarks from her face and down her body, Mirri has always stood out. Couple that with the fact she’s fat, she’s learned to let negative comments roll off her back and has accepted that she might not find the family she’s always wanted. I loved seeing Mirri be both comfortable with herself but also self-conscious when people get too close. I definitely got the vibe she was more worried about how her birthmarks are perceived than her body, but when she’s being scrutinized, you can really tell these are things at the front of her mind.
Spoilers! The anal sex scene in ch. 27 is so well weitten. I've never been big into anal scenes, just not my cup of tea personally, never hated them but i just paid less attention to them if i wasnt into the sex scene, like i normally do. I'll still read it, but i can skim it. It was well written and caught my attention, not overly graphic but still painting a great picture, a great intimate one. Then, by the end its very graphic, but still soft in an afterglow, the tenderness and overt horniness is still shining through the graphic, lewd acts. All in all, this book was sweet, it was so healing and it was so good.

This was a sweet quick read. Couldn't put it down and finished in one go, roughly four hours. Mirri is beautifully written, full of insecurity and anxieties many women face. It was a joy to see her come to life with the support of Iron, but mainly the connections she made with the other characters like Urul, Nadia, the matron at the fortress. Iron's devotion was punctuated masterfully with his ability to put his foot in his mouth, and miscommunication trouble never felt drawn out. The world and it's political intrigue had me hooked and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book in the series.
As a plus sized woman who is (and has always been) single, and who has body issues, completely connect with Mirri. It's like Pix crawled inside my brain and pulled out every single insecurity I have about my body and put it on paper. I cried a lot during this book because in a lot of ways I am Mirri. I am still waiting to find my Iron. But I hope that if I find him, he's not so dumb. Ha! This seriously one of my favorites.
This paranormal romance draws you right in. This insecure woman becomes a confident goddess when she puts her midwife hat on. Not only is she an amazing midwife but she goes above and beyond when a client is endager. The love story that develops is perfectly imperfect, dealing with miscommunication ( that is not ignored, accountability taken and attempts at righting wrongs done. Just a great couple and exciting story.
