As Liverpool and its residents begin to heal from the wounds and memories of World War I, life on Weaver Street in 1924 is blessedly peaceful. At number eleven, widow Kitty Conlon is dreaming about her upcoming wedding to John, while at number nine her best friend Maggie is cursing her bad luck as she juggles the demands of her cantankerous mother, stroppy daughter and fly-by-night beau. At number fifteen, Mavis has a mysterious new lodger, while further along the street the O Malley family are missing their beloved Ireland. But as the Depression begins to bite, and the arrival of the Muller family on Weaver Street signals the worrying drumbeats of conflict coming from Germany, the fragile happiness and peace Liverpool has been enjoying looks destined to end. And as the neighbours pull together in the toughest of times, the women on Weaver Street face the prospect of waving their menfolk off to war.
We're back in Weaver Street with Kitty Conlon and her neighbours in the second book of this series. This one is every bit as good as the first one. It's packed with action from beginning to end. It begins in 1924 and we go all the way through to 1939. We have the Depression of 1929 which brings severe hardship, then King Edward's Abdication, also Mosley's Black Shirts and then the threat of war. Through it all, Kitty, Maggie, Mavis, Beth and new edition Rose, drink tea by the gallon and put the world, mainly the neighbourhood, to rights. The 'Street' sticks together. The children are growing up and having their own problems. There are births, marriages and deaths. We have two new families on the street and though they fit in initially, it isn't all plain sailing. I love this series and can't wait for the next one!! I read it in one day. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who loves good historical fiction!
Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an early copy of this book.
Kitty Collins is so excited she’s going to marry her John and after her not so great first marriage to Eddie she knows this time she has found a winner, but when little Molly wakes her up saying she doesn’t feel good kitty wants nothing more but for her little girl to feel better her and the six-year-old are supposed to be isolated but a little scarlet fever isn’t going to keep her beloved John away. With the help of Maggie Bethany and Mavis however she’ll get through this John also has a grand surprise in store for his new bride they also get new neighbors who just like when Ketty moved to 10 Weaver St. are not her instant friends we’re doing reviews for literary fiction it’s always hard to know what is there it would not to share so I will just say kitty and her friends are getting older as well as their children and they face each new challenge with the tenacity vigor in charm they did in the first book I truly love the books about Weaver Street and can only hope the author will find a way to do a third book. Chrissy Walsh is one of those authors who books I will reread when I am feeling low and need to pick me up or in and one of those moods. I thoroughly enjoyed hard times on Weaver Street in highly recommend it. I received this book from NetGalley and BoldWoodBooks but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Chrissie Walsh is back with Hard Times on Weaver Street, the latest addictive instalment of her captivating saga series set in Liverpool after World War I.
It’s 1924 and after the upheaval of the First World War, life seems to have settled down in Liverpool and in Weaver Street. Widow Kitty Conlon is counting down the days until her upcoming wedding to John, while her best friend Maggie finds herself besieged by bad luck as she juggles the challenges of a very demanding mother, ungrateful daughter and a fly-by-night beau. Meanwhile, Mavis finds herself contending with a mysterious new lodger while the O’Malleys continue to miss their beloved Ireland.
However, the depression begins to make itself felt and every single resident begins to feel the pinch and wonder just what the future might hold for them. As a new family arrives on Weaver Street, their neighbours worry whether the longed-for peace and happiness that they had craved after the war might be slipping away as worrying rumours begin to gather momentum about Germany preparing itself for another brutal conflict.
The women of Weaver Street have just got their men back. Will they be waving them off to war again? Or could there be brighter times ahead for them all?
Chrissie Walsh’s Liverpool sagas never fail to delight and with Hard Times on Weaver Street, she has written a touching, dramatic, witty and heartwarming tale about community, friendship and love that is a joy to curl up with. Guaranteed to make readers laugh and cry, Hard Times on Weaver Street is an emotional, poignant and brilliantly written Liverpool saga sure to appeal to fans of Katie Flynn and Lyn Andrews.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hard Times On Weaver Street by Chrissie Walsh is a fabulous historical novel and the second book in the Weaver Street series. It can be read as a stand-alone. I enjoyed catching up with familiar faces as the residents of Weaver Street journey through the 1920’s and 1930’s. These are challenging decades as the residents who are recovering from World War I find themselves plunged into depression before war once more looms on the horizon. All the women are strong, realistic and likable. They support each other throughout life’s changing seasons. They also welcome new faces. “There was more love in those shabby little houses in Lamb Lane than there ever had been in Heathcote Manor.” Money does not buy happiness. There is no judging of situations as the women realise that there but for the grace of God. We all make mistakes and need love not judgement. It is delightful to watch the children grow throughout the course of the book as we welcome the next generation of residents to occupy Weaver Street. Strikes and a visit by Oswald Moseley reveal the unrest of the day. Despite the world changing, the residents of Weaver Street remain constant and true. Their love shines from the pages of the book. I am looking forward to many more visits to Weaver Street. I received a free copy from Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
As the great depression hits Liverpool, can she keep her family safe.
1924 Weaver street, Kitty Conlon is marrying her second husband John Sykes, John is a smashing bloke and will be a good dad to her children Molly and Patrick, then Molly is hit with scarlet fever and Maggie Stubbs and all the neighbours come to her rescue getting the house and the wedding ready. A new house built by John on the ground beside Weaver Street she will still see all her friends every day. Giving them new hopes for the future its now 1935 and the depression is taking its toll on everyone, bringing hard times to the family and neighbours Maggie, Beth and Mavis right up to the beginning of WW2.
What a absolutely fantastic read that you feel so drawn into the story, this book two will bring so much joy to readers and leaving you hoping that we now get another delightful read in book three.
This book, the second in the series, highlights life in Englad between WWI and WWII during the 1920s and 1930s. It's about how a neighborhood of people learns to cope with life and the many changes and challenges of that time. It puts a real-life spin on the stories we've heard through history books. We could learn a lot from them about pulling together to share what we have, while also finding a way to recognize there are people both beter off and less fortunate than we are, and finding a way to help them when we can, in very different ways. You root for them, both looking forward to their dreams and dreading what's to come. The book continues to follow the characters we were introduced to in the first book, while introducing new ones, as life goes on. I am looking foward to the next book.
I felt I was welcomed home to Weaver Street when I had the privilege to read the next chapter of these wonderful neighbors. New neighbors were introduced. Would they fit in? Will Weaver Street change?
I loved that the neighborhood was one of different cultures and economic status. They pulled together and survived the bad times. They came together to celebrate the good times. It was lovely to see how they united. You don't see that in today's world.
My favorite character was Kitty. She had such high hopes for her future. She arrived on Weaver Street as a young bride and developed into one of the strongest on the street.
I really enjoy period pieces. This was a page turner.
Hard Times on Weaver Street is the second book in the Weaver Street series by Chrissie Walsh. After reading Welcome to Weaver Street I was really looking forward to starting this one and it certainly didn’t disappoint. It’s a wonderful saga book with fabulous characters. The author describes the characters so well she makes them come alive through her books. There are some new characters introduced and one especially I grew very fond of as I read through this story. The neighbours of Weaver Street are facing some tough times during the 1930’s as Britain is hit by the Great Depression. However in spite of their troubles they battle on and have great spirit. I adored this book and really hope there will be a third one.
This is Chrissie’s second Weaver Street book and this one finds the friends and families struggling to survive through the depression of the 1930’s. We also meet a few new characters in this book. As with life some you love and some aren’t ones you’d wish to meet. I enjoyed catching up with Kitty and her friends again and thing’s definitely were not easy during this time but the love and friendship they had for each other certainly helped them through the difficult times. As the book ends World War Two had just been declared and I look forward to seeing how they all cope with this if Chrissie decides on a third book which I hope she does.
A heartwarming historical fiction saga that I am in love with! The drama is packed into the story and I for one found it a joy to read about the families on Weaver Street. There are deaths, secrets and the usual family dramas and there's even a new family to welcome to the neighbourhood. From the start of the book the drama starts and it doesn't stop until the last page. I love all the characters who I can easily relate to but I think the endless cups of tea would have me constantly running to the toilet. A pleasurable read and I can't wait for the next book to see what the families on Weaver Street are up too.
Hard Times on Weaver Street by Chrissie Walsh (Audiobook read on Hoopla app)
. The people of Weaver Street have rejoiced the end of World War I and now face the challenges of the Great Depression.
For Kitty Conlon, this is the beginning of a New marriage for and her children. As the years go by, she watches her children grow as she and the other Ladies of Weaver Street work together to get themselves and others less fortunate through this trying time. Then a little reprieve for all as the next war looms on the horizon.
A great continuation of the Series. This Series does not stand Alone, they need to be read in order.
I enjoyed this book from the recovery from the First World War and all the preparation for the coming war. As a parent you could feel and anxiety’s of the mothers and the stiff upper lip and pride that the men show seeing their sons going to fight. I would hope that another book would show the coming devastation of the families at home and the horror of who didn’t come home and the joy of those who did.
I really enjoyed this book, it gave me the closure I was looking for after the first one, bringing back familiar characters while introducing new faces. The author captures life on Weaver Street so vividly, with all its ups and downs, and it really drew me in. The sense of community and resilience among the women of Weaver Street is heartwarming, especially as they face uncertain times. I enjoyed every page and couldn’t wait to start the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend it!
This book is a historical saga bases in Liverpool . The title is very apt as it revolves around the residents of Weaver Street after world war 1 - the characters are entwined throughout the tale and it’s written so well that you actually feel like you are in the street amongst the neighbours very atmospheric! Loved the storyline with laughter and sadness and would highly recommend.
Love this new saga this is the second book following the lives of the residents of weaver street I love how they all look out for each other and the community of the street written beautifully look forward to book 3
This is the second book in the Weaver Street series. The close friends and neighbours stick together through all the trouble they face. Excellent series.looking forward to the next book.
We're back with Kitty Conlon and Weaver Street. A lovely book, with the warm feeling of neighbours and friends coming together to support each other through a difficult time. With lovely characters and friendships, this book wraps you in a warm blanket and sigh.
I love these characters, what a joy to feel how close they are in there friendship. Every character was fun to read, about there joys , there sorrows. I think this is a great series. Mrs. Walsh is an excellent author.
Binged read both books in one weekend. It's a well written world and characters. You feel like you could sit down with any character with a cup of tea and have a good chat. Looking forward to book three.
Enjoyed this second book as it follows current characters you read in Welcome to Weaver Street. As a mom enjoyed the growing up kids of characters. I'm looking forward to the final read in the well-written books by Chrissie Walsh.
