The White Horse and the Eagle: The myth of Daedalus reimagined.

Rate this book
I was told the story of Daedalus and Icarus was a myth.
If we were meant to fly, the gods would have given us wings.
For I am the cursed boy with three names.
The lowest of the low.
Born on that inauspicious day, the reviled son of a slave of Rome.
Betrayed to a fate worse than death, I defied an Emperor and soared with eagles .
All to journey to the hill of the white horse, with nothing but the promise around my neck.
I believed the impossible, for truth became lie and myth became real.

Caden is a likeable and capable character. The chase across the Roman Empire was interesting as well.
Sometimes it feels like there is quite a bit of distance between the reader and Caden. Towards the end, it becomes clear why that is, but it didn’t help the story to grip its reader. Some events and things that happen to other characters don’t affect him as much as one would expect if he were right in the moment.
Some characters over-explain things when they really don’t owe Caden any answer at all.
Overall an interesting tale, rounding up to four stars.

Unexpected and enjoyable!

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I purchased this book but am very glad I did! My degree is in the classics and this reminded me of why I enjoyed my studies. The classical world is full of magic and myth and this book gave life to a wonderful story. Thank you!

Not expected

This book was good. It follows a young slave's journey through life, while he endeavors to reach his mother's homeland while being pursued as a runaway.
