I’m trapped in paradise with a monster. And this beast can’t keep his hands off me.
Emilio Bruno is the king of Saint Parras College, an elite institution built in the heart of an island wonderland. It’s all sex, drugs, and beach bodies, with Emilio calling the shots from the shadows.
But the constant party is a mask to cover the darkness lurking around every corner.
My sister died in a mysterious accident at Saint Parras, and Emilio was there when it happened.
I think he killed her, and I’m going to prove it.
He’s a gorgeous monster with rage in his heart and his fingers wrapped around the throats of the administration.
Which is why I have to join his student society and learn all their secrets if I want to find out the truth about my sister.
Emilio’s behind everything, manipulating, controlling, and dragging me deeper into his darkness.
I hate him so much it hurts, but if I'm not careful I'll give in to all his twisted needs.
Welcome to the next generation of the Bruno Famiglia! Emilio kicks it off at Saint Parras College, an island heaven (or hell) full of rumors, mystery, power, and secrets. Come for the steam, stay for the characters! You’ll love Calico Club as much as I do! As always, it’s a standalone novel with no cliffhanger, no cheating, and a guaranteed happily-ever-after. Enjoy! XO BB
This isn’t your typical mafia book, but boy did I love it! It was so good, I was instantly hooked and finished it in a couple hours. When Kaye starts college at the exclusive Saint Parras, it’s to get answers for her sisters death. What she doesn’t expect is to fall for the one guy who’s rumored to be responsible for her sisters death. Emilio. She came to Saint Parras for answers, but what she ends up getting is a lot more. She learns the truth about her sister, and admits alot to herself too. This was definitely another great book to the Iron and Lace series. There wasn’t really any mafia action, it was just referenced. But even so I loved it! Probably one of my favorite in the series. Emilio wasn’t your typical hard core mafia guy, and it made him so much more enjoyable. He loved his friends fiercely and would do anything for them. Even when they betrayed him. And his feelings for Kaye were so genuine right from the start. I’d love to get another book on this couple, seeing them get married and start a family.
3.75 stars--TWISTED BY RELEASE is the fifth instalment in BB Hamels’ contemporary, IRON AND LACE dark, Mafia, romance series. Twisted by Release focuses on the next generation, a new adult romance story line focusing on Emilio Bruno, and Kaye Drake.
WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Kaye and Emilio) TWISTED BY RELEASE follows Kaye Drake as she searches for the truth in her sister’s death at the exclusive Saint Parras College, an elite school for the rich and notorious. Kaye’s sister Lucy died under mysterious circumstances the year before, and Kaye is determined to uncover the truth. Believing Emilio Bruno, heir to the Bruno Mafia family killed her sister, Kaye find herself up close and personal with the young man in question, a young man who knows more than Kaye could have ever imagined. Struggling between hatred and lust, Kaye finds herself Emilio’s pet, a pet who is now the target of someone else. All is not well in the halls of Saint Parras College, and blackmail, murder and power are at the heart of everything that has happened.
Kaye Drake has no idea how she is about to stir up a hornet’s nest of danger and death. There are twelve ruling and controlling societies at Saint Parras College, each one vying to take control from Emilio’s Calico House. From the importing of illegal goods to the mysterious disappearance of Kaye’s sister, someone is battling for control at the very top. Emilio Bruno knows immediately why Kaye Drake is a student at Saint Parras College but Emilio knows that to wrest control he must immediately use his power to seduce our story line heroine.
The relationship between Kaye and Emilio begins as a power exchange; a bully vs naivety, a hatred vs lust. Kaye believes Emilio is the man who killed her sister but Emilio knows the truth, and refuses to let Kaye find herself in the same predicament. The $ex scenes are erotic, aggressive and intense with some scenes of questionable consent.
We are introduced to Emilio’s brother Nathan, and their cousin Dom, as well as Emilio’s right hand Lesley; fellow Calico House members Terrance and Dirk; head of Cask and Barrel house Malcolm; and Dean Walt Wotherspoon.
TWISTED BY RELEASE is a story of power and control, rage and vengeance, secrets and lies, love and acceptance. The premise is dark, raw and heart pounding; the romance is provocative; the characters are charismatic, energetic, selfish and strong.
“Twisted by Release” is a story I’d describe as a combination of a dark mafia romance and a college bully romance. This isn’t the usual type of mafia book, but it works well. This is the third book in the ‘Iron and Lace’ series by B. B. Hamel.
Kaye starts attending college at an extremely unique one that’s located on a isolated island. She presents herself as simply an incoming freshman, but she actually has a much more important goal than getting an education; she’s there to avenge her sister’s murder. Emilio is a handsome upperclassman who runs an influential and exclusive club on campus, whose members live together in a house. Although Kaye is using a different last name, he immediately recognizes her for who she is. Her sister died in a tragic accident on the island the previous school year and he was the last one to have seen her, except Kaye doesn’t think it was an accident at all. Emilio is a member of the Bruno Famiglia, and he’s running his own secretive operation right there on the island. The attraction between Kaye and Emilio is immediate and intense, but she suspects he’s a killer and he suspects that she’s up to no good.
I thought this story was well-crafted with a bit of suspense and some excellent twists and turns. There are some steamy scenes between Kaye and Emilio, and all the one gets a little wild, nothing is too crazy. Lots of good secondary characters are there on the island, some of whom end up playing interesting roles in the story. This book held my interest from the intriguing beginning to the satisfying conclusion.
I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily sharing my thoughts and opinions. I also purchased a copy on Amazon.
This the the 5th story in the Iron and Lace Series and in this one we are take to a college campus on Saint Paris Island with the beach, jungle and unsafe cliffs. This is an elite college for the most powerful children to learn their craft and becoming the men of their mafia worlds. Kaye lost her sister while she was attending there and after revenge and her one person of interest is Emilio Bruno, next in line for their family. He knows exactly who she is but she’s trying to keep her secret close to her heart. Kaye’s life gets complicated from the time she makes her way to the island and Emilio opens her eyes to her body, needs and the truth about her sister. This is one crazy college life and you will not believe the way it’s run and how these young men and women learn to negotiate their lives. Emilio is one loyal man to his house - Calico House that he built with blood, sweat and help from those in his group. Emilio is the leader on the campus as he runs the most successful smuggling enterprise until it’s threatened. When secrets are uncovered everyone in Calico House lives are never going to be the same. I look forward to reading more on the characters in this story! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
As I expected, this is another page turner from this talented author. Such a compelling mystery read, I couldn't read fast enough!
I am glad I read the other stories in this Iron and Lace collection, but a reader does not need to have read the other Bruno family stories to enjoy this one. Helpful, yes. But not required.
Emilio and Kaye have a twisted beginning, full of steamy chemistry and oh so many lies! Both of these characters are driven (by their painful pasts and dark traumas) to protect themselves, while they pursue their goals.
Solving the mystery of her sister's disappearance is not as simple as it seems, and Kaye unknowingly finds herself tangled up in more dangerous situations than she could have foreseen. Emilio's a commanding guy, with a lot of power (as all Bruno men have) and his attraction to her only adds to her danger. The steamy scenes and drama between these two is seriously addictive.
I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this one. The betrayals and underlying truths kept me engrossed in these pages right up until their HEA. This is easy to read and lose yourself in Saint Parras, and Calico House.
I was thrilled to receive my free ARC from Booksprout, and I voluntarily leave my review.
“ He’s harder than I imagined. Sharper, tougher. He’s angry, but not in the way I pictured. He’s not selfish—he cares about his crew and they care about him too—but he also has secrets. There are depths to him, a darkness I want to explore, and yet I’m terrified. I thought he killed my sister. Now I have my doubts. After meeting him and knowing him, it’s hard for me to imagine he’d let my sister die, even if she did write a scathing article revealing some secrets about his smuggling operation. She probably made his life harder, but everyone at this school already knew about him before it came out. It’s just that she brought it into the light, and Emilio thrives in the dark. But to kill her for it? He’d say it’d be the right move—but could he actually do it? ”
Twisted By Release is the fifth book in the Iron and Lace series by B.B. Hamel. I hadn’t read any of B.B. Hamel’s work before, so I really didn’t know what I could expect from her- but WOW, what an awesome introduction to her work this turned out to be. I was completely absorbed in the story from the very first page. Riveted in my seat as the story unfolded. I loved how cleverly crafted this story was, reeling me in and keeping me glued to the pages… building the tension, intrigue, mystery, suspense, and psychological elements into a finely tuned and intense bit of a mind game. This is romantic suspense done right- a mafia academy thriller, with an enemies to lovers element, a mysterious island, murder mystery, forced proximity, dark details, violence, action, adventure, emotion, and so much more that had me devouring the pages to find out how it all played out in the end. Kaye arrives on the island to try and discover what happened to her sister. She has a pretty good idea of where to start, and his name is Emilio Bruno. But getting to the truth is no easy feat, and Kaye soon finds herself in a bit of a twisted cat and mouse game, where danger lurks, and things aren’t quite what they seem. She had a plan, but things aren’t quite working out the way she thought. Sparks fly and danger mounts. Will she discover the truth, or will she meet the same fate as her sister? This is well worth the read to find out. Addictive… Riveting…. Deliciously Dark…. I came into this series a little backwards, not realising at the time that this is the fifth book in the series. #standalones ….But after loving this so so much, I will definitely be going back to the beginning of this series and reading them all from the start, as well as exploring all of B.B’s other works that I can lay my hands on. #newobsession Happy Reading…

Did Kaye finally get her revenge on Emilio or the person who kill her sister? Did Emilio and Kaye fall in love? Who was person vying for control of Club Calico from Emilio?
I received an advanced copy of this book via Booksprout and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This one is more fantasy than fiction. Emilio is at college, on an island that is nothing but the college, and it’s one never-ending party. Emilio runs Calico House, which is one of several secret societies on the island, and is also responsible for the smuggling operation that keeps the kids in booze, drugs, and condoms.
Kaye arrives for her first year determined to discover what happened to her older sister, Lucy. She’s convinced Emilio killed her because he was the last person to see her alive. Naturally she wants to join Calico House to get close to Emilio to investigate, and she says as much right away. He arranges an initiation which is really just him taking Kaye to the basement and pouring hot wax on her body until she gets off on the pain. Which seems not at all like the initiation into a secret society should be - what about all the others members? - but whatever. Their attraction to each other is instant, even though she supposedly believes Emilio murdered her sister.
The steamy bits were not very steamy. There’s a scene in a hotel where Kaye is trying to convince Emilio to continue their sexual relationship and he basically tells her he can find “a wet hole” with any number of girls on the island, and I’m sorry WHAT? That’s gross and demeaning, and we also learn that Kaye is a virgin…but of course she seems to find him irresistibly sexy when he says it. There’s dirty talk and then there’s just disrespect.
There’s a whole bunch of far-fetched stuff about blackmailing the dean (who actually killed Lucy) and rival societies and their smuggling operations, and of course Kaye is kidnapped and held against her will and has to be rescued by Emilio. It’s all beyond belief, and Kaye & Emilio’s “romance” seemed forced and unnatural.
The book Twisted by Release is the 5th book in the Bruno Mafia family series called Iron and Lace. In this book Kaye is going to college at Saint Parras Island which is close to Catalina Island. Her perfect sister Lucy (according to Kaye) came to school at Saint Parras and was killed. It was ruled as a suicide but Kaye knows her sister would never kill herself. Kaye is determined to find the person responsible for the death of Lucy. While on the ferry to the college Kaye becomes acquainted with Dom and Nathan on the ferry. When they disembark from the ferry Dom and Nathan are greeted by Emilio. He is the leader of Calico House on Saint Parras Island. Emilio is smuggling all sorts of things that is transported by Jeeps to the college. Some of the items being smuggled is alcohol, cigars, pills, marijuana and possibly cocaine where it is sold to students, teachers and administrators. Emilio knows who Kaye is and when she requests to be part of the Calico Club he decides to allow it. Will Kaye get her revenge? Will Emilio get Kaye? Will Kaye and Emilio find peace and comfort? As the previous books in this series there is action, lots of twists that you don’t see coming, great secondary characters and of course some very steamy sexy scenes. I enjoyed the previous four books and this is was no exception it’s actually good to follow up with a family later to see what the kids are up to since Emilo is the son of the Don.
Hamel’s books always bring good steam with a teaser story that could be so much deeper and developed. Her characters are typically flat and the relationship development is lacking. However, I keep gobbling them up because I like that they are stand alones and sometimes I get tired of waiting for the next installment of the same book in a series of 10. So in this book we see baby Emilio all grown up carving out a place for himself away from his mob family. I loved/hated all the stories with his family and I took a break because it was weird to go from his parents straight to him. So I just came back after a few months and he is just as delicious as his dad and uncles. Our FMC, like all of Hamel’s, is pretty boring without much self awareness or development. The basis of the story is there I just wanted more. Can we get some better descriptions about what chapters look like please!!! I wanted more development between the characters and the “l” word and I wanted more depth from the “bad guy”. Sometimes Hamel gets stuck on side character development when we could be sticking to our main characters and their plot. Again, I’ll keep reading them because steamy steamy steamy and quick to the point cuts.
This is a dark Mafia romance about the next generation of the Bruno Famiglia. It focuses on Emilio. He is at a very exclusive private college on a remote island off the coast of California. And he is true to his roots. He builds a family business of smuggling beer, liquor, weed, and anything else that a college co-ed might need or want. He is in his third year and has built up his house with a select few members. As the year starts he is joined by his younger brother, Nathan, and cousin, Dom. Also joining the school is Kaye Drake. She is here for her own reasons. Her sister Lucy was a student who died in a tragic accident last year. But Kaye doesn’t buy the story. She thinks Lucy was murdered. And the last person to see her was Emilio. She gets a spot in the house by her brave front. And their attraction is immediate. But does Emilio know who she is? And did he kill her sister? This story is full on danger, angst and passion. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. I love BB Hamel’s dark tales. I did receive an advance copy for my honest review.
Kaye and Emilio's story isn't my usual read, aka college bullying trope. I like this author and was intrigued by the mystery surrounding the death of Kaye's sister so I gave it a try. I felt the story was well done and possessed enough of a storyline that wasn't completely focused on the college bully scenario to hold my interest and loved the idea it took place on a remote island. It's original and different and not the same ole story over and over again with different characters and a different location. The writing was good and both Kaye and Emilio possessed interesting characteristics that brought depth to a story that could have been "just okay". There is plenty of intrigue and suspense and a growing attraction between Emilio and Kaye.
Allies are formed, enemies are uncovered and the truth to Kaye's sisters death is answered by books' end. I have read all of the Iron and Lace series to date and have not been disappointed. This author has a good grasp on Mafia genre, unlike other authors who don't. It can be a difficult genre to develop and be original in it's presentation. Well done.
What a great introduction to a new the college Saint Parras for the elite of society both legal and illegal. Its set in the middle of the ocean, seclude from everything. Emilo is the next generation of the Bruno family. H has become the king of smuggling in contraband for the students and staff. Kaye is searching for her sister’s killer, Emilo Bruno and to find out what really happened to her sister Lucy. This story has it all mystery surrounding the death of her sister, secrets, lies and blackmail and betrayal. I really enjoyed the banter between Emilo and Kaye. He knows who she really is, and she thinks he along with everyone at the college is in the dark about her true identity and her purpose there. She struggles with seeing Emilo as the killer, but she persists in finding out the truth, and it puts in more danger as secrets and lies are revealed. This book isn't without some minor issues but I found it to be somewhat unique. I tore through it. I read a fair number of college romances and this is unlike any other college romance. I don't read a ton of mafia romances, but it's different than any of those I've read, too. And it is definitely different than the first four books. Not sure why it wasn't written as a spinoff since his brother and cousin could easily have books in the same setting.
As with all of her books, there are a fair number if typos. She needs a better proofreader. Also, Emilio has been in college for 3 years already. That would make this his 4th year but he isn't graduating at the end of the year. I know some people take 5 years for an undergrad degree, but it felt more like something overlooked.
I've read books from some of her other series since this series and they aren't as good. I'll gladly read more of the Bruno family.
Unraveling The Mysteries Of Their Love - Kaye thought she was only going to investigate the death of her sister by Emilio and get an education, but what actually happened was that she was taken on a wild ride that forced her to make life changing decisions. The storyline seemed to have been set in a college, where the characters had created their own version of the New World Mafia and Cartel families, but without the guns and trafficking.
I started reading this book in the morning and found myself so engrossed in the story, that I had to switch off my mobile phone. I really didn’t think B. B. Hamel could surprise me with her stories, but boy was I wrong. You should just get ready to have your mind blown and leave you wanting more.

This is the 5th book in this fascinating series, and this is Emilio and Kaye’s story. Emilio is the king of Saint Parras College, and he is fiercely protective to those he loves. Saint Parras is for the elite and notorious, and when Kaye’s sister dies in mysterious circumstances, she is determined to prove that Emilio is the one who killed her. Emilio knows who Kaye is, and that she is seeking answers, but she becomes a target herself. Will Emilio be able to protect and keep Kaye safe? This is a well written story which is dark, raw, gritty, intense, and emotionally charged, with secrets, lies, betrayal, twists, friendships, family, vengeance, acceptance, and mystery, which all leads to a riveting page turner. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Excellent and extremely unpredictable It's an excellent dark romance, with a few raunchy scenes, some related to pain, but it's also mostly an unpredictable story about a death in an isolated university, with a criminal group discovering enemies and a strong desire for revenge for the heroine. Kaye wants to avenge the death of her sister on an island that only serves an elite with its university. Her target: Emilio, the son of a mobster but to whom she is immediately attracted. A rather intense effect of hatred and attraction is created, in an increasingly tense atmosphere, full of secrecy. It's excellent and unpredictable, from start to finish. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
Next Generation Emilio Bruno and Kaye Drake’s dark story is definitely a page turner. Kaye’s sister was killed at on the elite island where Saint Parras College is situated. Now she is there to take revenge on her sister’s killer. She is sure it was Emilio Bruno who seems to have control of everything illegal on the island, however, it is not that simple. Everyone is keeping secrets. Who can be trusted? This dark mafia romance takes a different path than B.B. Hamel’s mafia stories usually do, but it still has the captivating drama, mystery, danger and suspense that all her books do. A fascinating well written read of betrayal and unexpected outcomes that I could not put down. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book is twisted and full of secrets. Emilio is from the Bruno family who we met in a few past books. Bruno is part of the younger generation of Bruno’s. We also see his brother and a cousin as well in this book. They are part of a secret society the Emilio created at their exclusive college. Kaye comes to the college on its private island to find out how her sister really died while at the school. Kaye goes in thinking Emilio was the cause of her sisters death. Throughout their story we find out how twisted thing’s actually were at the school and the truth into the sisters death. There are so many layers of things going on that you will be left wondering what will happen next. This is definitely a book you want to carve out the time to sit down and read at once.
Kaye goes to the university where her sister died to seek out the truth and get revenge. There she is forced to face some terrible truths about her past while starting an uncomfortable but very intense relationship with her prime suspect, who teaches her a lot she didn’t know about herself and her sister. I think Emilio has a strong set of morals, just not the normal ones. His people are everything to him. It does not take Kaye very long to figure that out.

Who will be the cat and who will be the mouse between these two
Twisted by Release is the fifth book in the Iron and Lace series. This story starts with a mystery and keeps the suspense going until the end. I was sucked into the story from the start and found it an easy to understand read but it still had twists along the way that I was not expecting. There are a couple cat and mouse games happening between the main characters of Kaye and Emilio, which make for some interesting reading.
Kaye wanted answers for her sisters mysterious death, heading to the place it all happened she doesnt expect to be drawn to Emilio, the one she suspects is behind her sisters murder. but as truth get uncovered where will it leave Kaye and Emilio? well written engaging, drama, desires a great addition to the series.

This is the second generation of the Bruno Mafia Family and the first book didn’t disappoint. Emilio and Kaye have secrets and if exposed could test there relationship. He’s the oldest cousin and big man on this island school. Making a name for himself he does unconventional dealing. Hidden truths, and betrayal. This book is not your typical mafia book, it’s only mentioned in conversation. Good read.

BB is back with another 5 star book! I had a really hard time putting this book down and I loved the twists and turns it had. Kaye and Emilio were fantastic together with their intense connection and chemistry. I can't wait for the BB's next book!.

This was definitely twisted! Loved the characters involved and the interactions, even if most of them were legal! The mystery wasn't hard to figure out but the story around it and the conclusion made it worth the easy part.

Another great book by BB Hamel. Second generation Bruno Famiglia. College on an isolated island where the rules are what you make them. Intense attraction, burning hatred, a mysterious death and sexual release like none other. Great book!.

Kaye goes to the island to find the truth about who killed her older sister Lucy. She hates Emilio because she believes that he's the one who killed Lucy, and she is planning on killing him in return. This story is dark and has themes that could be triggering for some. I really enjoyed this book. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book via BookSprout.
