For When Everything Is Burning

Rate this book
This one is a little different.

If you feel like the world forgot to prepare a spot for you, this is for you.

If you feel like you were born into the wrong timeline, the wrong culture, or on the wrong planet, this is for you.

If you’ve ever found yourself questioning your humanity and wondering if you are “something else,” this is for you.

If you feel like your life has been an endless quest for something you haven’t found, this is for you.

If you feel more aware of the pain, the suffering, the darkness, and the brokenness of the world, this is for you.

If you relate to these words, please know that I see you. That you aren’t anywhere near as alone as you feel. That there are others like you. Your pain is real and valid, even if nobody around you understands it.

You don’t have to hide anymore. You don’t have to keep wearing that brave face for everyone else’s benefit, even when it feels like you’re drowning inside. You can face the darkness head-on, and I can teach you how.

First, we have to identify the lies the world tells you and how to stop listening to them. There are six of them in particular that we hear over and over

•Everything is your fault

•You can’t change anything

•You're missing something

•What feels true is true

•You're not trying hard enough

•You aren't ready

Most people believe and align with these lies. You don't have to. If you learn how to recognize them and speak truth to them over and over again, they start to quiet down. This lets you be you again, instead of what the world tries to make you into.

Second, we have to look at the automatic and subconscious choices your mind makes throughout your day. Most of your life is lived automatically based on programs and algorithms that are pre-loaded for you. You can change most of them. You can use neurological chainsaws to cut through the habits and routines, to reshape your mental processes into whatever you want them to be.

This work is a blend of psychology, neuroscience, and memoirs. Scattered in between the strategies and concepts are paired journal entries. Passages written by someone in their darkest hour, someone who resents the fact that they were forced to exist, and responses written by someone who has conquered their darkest hour and knows the way out. These passages add a personal, intimate, and raw touch for the reader.

This book is for those whose needs run deeper. For people whose problems cannot be solved with a lavish vacation and regular spa days. For people more in need of a renovation than a remodeling. If that sounds like you, then this work is for you.

I stumbled on Dr. Scott Eilers by chance through his YouTube channel. I have read a lot of educational books/seen many videos on suicide. Some have been great from a research perspective, but overall they always seem to focus on those with previous attempts or those who have acute suicidal ideation.
Individuals who live with chronic suicidal ideation are rarely…if ever mentioned.
In the odd chances that they are, it is in passing and the author often suggests these individuals “seek professional help”….entirely leaving out the phenomenology of what it’s like to live life with this condition or what actions therapist or patients can do about it.
Presently, Scott is the only psychologist I’ve found to speak honestly and with heart about what living with passive suicidal ideation is like. His YouTube videos on these subjects are wonderful.

…So it is no surprise that his book is also great. Reading it feels raw, and I do not doubt that the author has lived through similar experiences.
The book doesn’t specifically talk about passive SI. Nevertheless, I think the book still provides genuinely helpful suggestions for those who experience ideation, depressive thoughts, shame, etc.
I would definitely recommend this one.

Anyways..thanks Scott!

The book gives insights into methods of coping with certain things. Every chapter gives you strategies for changing your perspectives and ideas. It features stories from the author to represent that certain experiences aren't as unique as we might think they are.

I probably have to come back to this one and reread some chapters and give it time to mull over the ideas presented here.

In the last few months I've had a few self-help books which I have found helpful and insightful, but none has resonated as much as this one. The difference between this book and the others I have a read is that I truly identify with the author and all he has written here, it feels like he has experienced exactly what I'm going through. I love books I have read have touched the surface of depression and anxiety, and they had given helpful tips of how to manage. But this book goes deeper it explores the darkness that you are going through and says it's okay, you're only human we all go through this and we all need to understand it, not ignore it, not slap a Band-Aid on it and hope it will get better. But examine, question they'll be days where you will be in a dark place but it won't last forever, because nothing does.

If you are in a dark place, definitely seek professional help but I will also say read this book, it truly does feel like you're not alone.

Lots of really good chestnuts in this little book: “Immerse yourself in the language of your needs mattering.” “Challenging inappropriate self-blame is how we start to take back our mind.” “No more chasing an idealized version of yourself.” All very pragmatic and compassionate thoughts and advice.
