Reread 2024

Reread this one so I'm caught up for book 2, Shield of the Mighty. And still love this one just as much as I did the first time.

"I took one last look at the man who'd made me feel seen, and cherished, for the first time in my life, then I turned and walked away because if there was anything I'd learned from Avi's stories of yahweh, it was that love was nothing without sacrifice."

I love what Connilyn is doing in the Christian fiction realm. She writes with such respect and reverence to the Bible, crafting fictional people set during real events to make the setting come alive. I typically don't read biblical fiction because I don't like reading fictionalized stories of real people, but that's not what Connilyn does. This book is yet again an incredible work of art - right down to the cover!

It's a fascinating yet incredibly tumultuous time for Israel as they crown their first king. This book is clearly setting up the series, so for the first third/half, it's a lot of explaining and getting the reader into the setting. I did enjoy that, though, as I love seeing what life was like in Bible times. Something Connilyn does well is contrast the brutality and futility of the pagan gods with our loving and gracious Lord. This book takes us to the outer edges of the Israelites, who strayed so far away from their covenant God and way of life that there was no difference between their worship and the pagans.

"In the kingdom to come, we may understand all. But for now, our eyes are blind to the ways of the Ancient One, are they not? Only Yahweh knows the end from the beginning."

I did find plot-wise (e.g. runaway bride, coming of age, girls 'sold off' to old men in marriage and treated like property), it's been done before in several of her books already. I'd actually love to see her take on the arranged marriage and make it work. Especially since it is mentioned many times over how common it was during that day, and obviously some people made it work.

All in all, an excellent start to what I'm sure will be a fascinating series. My only complaint is that I have to wait for the next one!

Voice of the Ancient is a stunning coming of age tale about four boys hoping to prove their manhood on a battlefield with King Saul. After a tragic detour changes Avidan’s plan, he discovers Keziah needs his help. With page after page of powerful truth, the Voice of the Ancient rocked their world—and mine as I read it!

Voice of the Ancient is the first in Connilyn Cossette’s The King’s Men series. It continues a generational story that began nearly 500 years earlier with her very first book! The skill with which she has woven story after story with fictional characters, historical insight, and the Truth of God’s Word is beyond admirable. It’s brilliant.

In her previous series, The Covenant House, readers experienced Israel’s burdensome years of Philistine oppression. Now, Voice of the Ancient introduces readers to four young men whose friendship draws them into the grand adventure of King Saul’s first battle.

Cossette’s signature tension, sweet romance, and exquisite eye for detail, sweeps readers into the era of King Saul’s reign. Get ready to be blown away!

Voice of the Ancient is the first in The King’s Men series and is a coming-of-age story set in 1043 Isreal, a transitional time in history, during King Saul’s first battle. When we first met Zevi, Ativan, Gavriel and Shalem in Cossette’s two prequel novellas, the boy cousins were young and playing soldiers in the forest. They’ve now grown into teenagers who want to prove themselves by heading out to rescue those in Gilead who’ve been sieged by the Ammonites.

Cossette's persistent reminders about faith and obedience and her ability to bring Ancient Israel alive for her readers make this one of my top biblical fiction reads EVER.

Ativan pulled on my heartstrings as he began to question his role and influence. He balked at being expected to continue his father’s legacy and was in anguish over his perceived belief that his own path had been set in stone by the happenstance of his birth. Cossette shows how his outlook catalyzed his growth. In many ways, we want to be in control of events and it takes God placing a roadblock in our path for us to slow down and yield. The roadblock in Avidan’s journey leads him to Keziah and Sarru, her horse with personality plus! I loved having a front-row seat to Ativan’s spectacular transformation.

It was good to be reminded that:
💜 love is nothing without sacrifice
💜 there’s a danger in going through the motions
💜 it’s important to wait for direction and share with strangers
💜 we need to keep our guard up at all times and remain united in our purpose

📍When watching the coronation, Ativan notes that he was “witness to the new order of things.” I thought that this always happens when we put a new king on the throne, especially in our hearts. Suddenly, the old way of doing things isn’t going to work.

Cossette’s story highlighting 1 Samuel is one all Christian historical fiction lovers will want to read before the sequel, Shield of the Mighty, is released on August 20, 2024.

Voice of the Ancient - Connilyn Cossette - 4 Stars - A beautiful coming of age story for Avidan and Keziah set during the crowning of King Saul!

What a great start to The King's Men series! I am so excited to see what Connilyn does next! The way she weaves in fictional characters set during biblical times and events is always amazing!

This follows both Avidan and Keziah at the start of the newly crowned King Saul's reign in 1042 BC. Avidan and his 3 cousins are the primary focus of the series - they have a brotherhood that is as strong as can be. In this books, we follow Avidan and his search to find one of his cousin's that goes missing in their battle together. He goes on a search alone to find him, but runs into Keziah, the daughter of a powerful clan chief in Manasseh who is on the run from a forced marriage to a terrible man. Avidan and Keziah begin their journey together and her true origins start to be revealed along the journey. They start to form feelings and a bond for one another in their travels. As those out for Keziah continue to get closer to her and Avidan continues searching for his missing cousin, they realize just what is important to them and the true protection of Yahweh.

This books took me on quite the journey - we see so much going on in Israel as they crown their first king and then seeing our young characters off in war, arranged unwanted marriages, leaving loved ones -- all at the young age of 17. It shows how strong they were during such a time to be alive. Avidan and his cousins were starting to see the true meaning of becoming a man during their time by going off to war and Keziah was learning so much of her true family origins and having to make hard decisions at such a young age. We see some of the Israelites who worshiped idols and pagan traditions and some learning the truth of Yahweh along the way.

While the romance was a bit young and fast for me, it definitely makes sense for the biblical time and I really like the way Avidan and Keziah would do anything to protect one another. The swimming scene was one of my favorites between them. Also, I loved Keziah's horse, my heart! Overall, this was such an engaging storyline that kept me on my toes and I am so excited to continue in this stunning generational series!

Thank you to Bethany House and Baker Publishing for a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“Only Yahweh knows the end from the beginning.”

Oh, readers… you are in for a real treat when you read Voice of the Ancient, the latest beautifully written Biblical-era fiction from Connilyn Cossette.

Avidan is the son of Ronen and Eliora, whom readers first met in To Dwell Among Cedars, but don’t worry if you haven’t read that duology yet (I haven’t). You won’t be lost at all; it’s simply a nice reunion for those who have. Avi is ordained by birth to be a Levite, the ancient version of a worship minister, but he would rather be doing almost anything else. Which is how he finds himself heading off to fight the Ammonites with his cousins, directly disobeying his parents and his place among the tribes of Israel… and running into more trouble than he bargained for. I loved how Cossette orchestrates Avi’s coming of age journey on these pages, how she uses the events that unfold to help him grow up in both responsibility and calling, shouldering the consequences of his decisions and finding the grace of God over his life. I saw a lot of myself in Avi, despite our very different circumstances, a testament to the author’s talent in characterization.

Like Avi, in just a few short days Keziah’s world is turned upside down. If not for her trusty horse (who I absolutely loved – his personality is so tangible and the source of some of the humor in this book), she would be all alone. On the run from a would-be forced marriage to an evil man, grieving the loss of someone she only just fully knew, and at the mercy of the unforgiving countryside, Keziah’s only hope is that the goddess Asherah will intervene. At least, until she meets Avi and joins her journey to his… and begins to learn about the One True God who loves her more than anyone else ever could. I found myself fascinated by Keziah’s religious background, the author’s detailed research evident in every aspect of this book but especially here. I loved Keziah’s spirit, her sense of humor, her kind heart, and her bravery … and I really loved watching her and Avi fall in love.

Bottom Line: Connilyn Cossette’s Voice of the Ancient is rich in compelling characters, vibrant settings, emotional storylines, and impeccable research. Avidan and Keziah drew me in from the moment I met each, and their romance is pitch perfect in its blend of sweet and swoony (the swimming scene!!!). Honestly, I hung on every word of this story. It’s emotional and, in many ways, tragic – yes. But it’s also warm and uplifting, full of deep friendship and sacrificial love, with dashes of humor at just the right times. I am so intrigued by where the other books could take Avi’s cousins, and I’ll definitely be along for the ride!

An intriguing first installment in The King's Men series!

Both Avidan and Keziah were well-developed characters who grew as the story progressed. Avidan's dissatisfaction with being a Levite and Keziah's escape from an abusive betrothal added plenty of tension to the book. I do wish both of them had been a bit older. Their ages almost made this book seem like a young adult novel.

The plot moved along well and included some action scenes, touching moments, and plenty of character-building sections. Connilyn Cossette's descriptive writing style worked great for this book, and I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series!

Overall, Voice of the Ancient was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and Biblical fiction.

A trip back in time to the beginning of the reign of King Saul. Four cousins embark on a journey to join the army slated to rescue their fellow Hebrews from the Ammonites. Told through the eyes of Avidan, a Benjaminite and a Levite and Kesziah, a girl being used as a pawn in a political alliance. I was transported to a world that was dangerous and interesting. I learned a bit about how the tribes of Israel diverged from worshipping only the One True God and accepted other gods alongside Yahweh, diluting His true character. I appreciated Avidan because he was taught the old stories of his people and kept the True Faith. He was representing Yahweh as he recounted the history. Keziah was so very brave and came to know that Yahweh was the Only God through the stories that Avi told.
The themes included the steadfastness of God, the importance of remaining faithful to God and that “Only Yahweh knows the end from the beginning.”
A very exciting and immersive book that has me eager to read the next book in the series.

1042 BC Israel

Fabulous! Voice of the Ancient grabbed me early on and didn't let go.

Four teenage cousins with strong bonds are the focus of this series. In Voice of the Ancient readers primarily get to know Avidan "Avi". His destiny as a Levite doesn't match with his desire to go to battle for his new king. Avi follows his own will knowing his parents will be devastated. Avi learned valuable lessons on his journey as a warrior and showed courage after war turned out to be so different than his dreams.

Keziah's story is equally compelling. She's the daughter of a clan chief and betrothed to a much older man in hopes of securing security for the clan. Her horse Sarru stole my heart.

Simply beautifully written and engaging. Loved the ending with so many loose threads to be pursued as the series continues.

My gratitude to the author and publisher Bethany House for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Voice of the Ancient kept me up past my bedtime on more than one occasion. I'll need to come back and revise this mess of words because I am sleep deprived and experiencing a book hangover.

Characters inspired me as they walked through extraordinarily challenging circumstances. I hung on every word as a new generation of characters learned to seek and trust God while navigating intimate familial connections and searching for His sovereign will for their individual lives.

Saul's early reign is represented in a subtle background manner from several different "everyday Joe" perspectives, effectively setting the tone of the time period's cultural atmosphere. Cossette paints a vivid landscape with grand scale without neglecting subtle wonders of creation.

As always, I am in awe of this master storyteller and her skillfully crafted world of words. Twists and turns lead to a satisfying conclusion, yet I am eager for future installments of the series as well. I highly recommend this book.

Voice of the Ancient spoke to my heart in so many ways. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every page. I found the book to be filled with action and soul stirring emotion from the beginning to the very end. Not only was there romance, but more than that, a love for family and a devotion to Yahweh. I was in tears at the end, I was moved not only by the progression of the characters' love for God, but it moved me to ponder how God designed each person for a reason. Are we listening to His Voice? We are all called to something. Not everyone can be a warrior or a storyteller, but we are all designed for the Glory of Adonai. I look forward to the continuation of the series. I am hooked, and I can't wait to read more about these characters who feel like family now.

Voice of the Ancient exceeds a 5-star rating! If possible, I would rate it 10+ stars! It is perfectly written with well-developed characters (some loved, some despised), brilliant story, descriptive settings, and exquisitely incorporated Biblical truths.

Readers who enjoy the writings of Tamera Alexander, Mesu Andrews, Julie Klassen, Jill Eileen Smith, Kim Vogel Sawyer, and Elizabeth Camden will fall in love with the pace and writing style of this incredible novel.

Connilyn Cossette, Christy Award and Carol Award winning author, wonderfully weaves stories of love, forgiveness, marriage, trust, family, friendships, hope, and fears together with spiritual and emotional panoramas -- for the complete immersive experience! This author challenges us to be warriors for Truth.

This five+-star book details in numerous ways that calling out to God, surrendering all to Him, and moment-by-moment obeying Him are choices we need to make. This is all necessary if we want to have a close relationship with Him and meaningful relationships with those around us. Listening to His voice and obeying God is always worth it!

Voice of the Ancient certainly stirs up countless emotions and as the reader steps into the pages of the ancient world. This reader thoroughly enjoyed being carried away to another time and place and connecting with Keziah and Avidan. As I try to wrap up this review without including any spoilers, I saw myself in both main characters. Cossette’s writing has a way of doing this via each of her books.

Sometimes my ears are so overwhelmed with the noise of this world, that I allow that racket to drown out the Voice of the Ancient One. May it never be so again as I actively cherish and cultivate my “set apartness” to Yahweh, the One True God.

I received an eARC of Voice of the Ancient from Bethany House Publishers through NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review nor am I paid to do so. The words above are my honest review of this life-changing book.

I absolutely adore the stories this author sets in Old Testament times. She has such a gift of bringing that historical time to life in such a new way.

This time we get to know Avidan and his cousins who were in Between the Wild Branches! This story is set during 1 Samuel when Saul becomes king. Sometimes, we get into our heads what we think we want and what we think is best and try to go our own way. This is what leads Avi away from his Levitical future to the battleground with his cousins. He wants to do more for the Lord, and he believes this is it!

At the same time, Keziah has been forced into a marriage with an evil man, but she escapes with only her life and horse. Keziah & Avi's paths cross at just the right time, and they journey together with each of their purposes in mind. The battlefield wasn't at all what Avidan had expected and has decided to go home with his tail between his legs. Unfortunately, his young cousin is missing and the search is on.

It was incredible watching Avi grow and learn about how the Lord had gifted him as he traveled with Keziah. For Keziah to finally know that she was finally seen and loved just for who she was melted my heart.

I'm so excited for the journey readers will be taking on The King's Men series!

I'm so glad to see Connilyn Cossette continuing to write stories about the Israelites in the Old Testament, and highly anticipated this book. Time marches on, and now Israel is crowning their first king as the children from her last series grow into adults. I really enjoyed seeing the effects of some of the country's historical choices on the culture, such as the way the tribes on the east side of the Jordan intermingled more of the surrounding nations' beliefs into their own religion. It was also interesting to me how cousins could live together and belong to different tribes and have different responsibilities.

Avidan is an imperfect hero, discontent with the role God has given him, wanting to be and do things he views as more worthy. In a lot of ways, this book was very familiar, even though the time period and some plot points were new. It read very much like the author's other books, which means that if you like her other books, you'll like this one too. I'm interested in some of Avi's cousins and looking forward to reading their stories.

I read a copy provided by Netgalley for review but these are my own honest, unfiltered thoughts and opinions.

“‘The anointed one shall abide by the counsel of the Most High, The voice of the Ancient One to light his every step.’”

I have been slowly developing a love for Biblical fiction over the last year, and that is thanks in large part to finding stellar authors in the genre. Their work is not only impeccably researched, though that is crucial. These books are beautifully written, packed with interesting and compelling fictional characters alongside their factual counterparts. And these stories are incredibly engaging, pairing original stories with true settings in time and place, or allowing readers to see a true story from Scripture from a fascinating new fictitious angle.
“He is just and powerful, but he is also a God of steadfast love. A God of mercy and kindness who has called our people to share in his goodness and be a light to the nations.”

I’m happy to report that I can now add Connilyn Cossette to my ever-increasing list of Biblical fiction authors I love. Voice of the Ancient was a captivating introduction to her work. This is a series opener following Avidan, one of four cousins around whom the series centers, all couched within the rise and reign of Israel’s first king, Saul. Avi is a Levite who bucks against his intended role as musician, following a long line of Levitical musicians in his family. He yearns instead to go to war on behalf of the newly anointed King Saul, to make a name for himself alongside his cousins. When he joins the fray only to find that he was not cut out of war, heartbreak follows. But God uses even the darkest of circumstances for our good and His glory, as Avi discovers on what turns out to be the adventure of a lifetime.
"But at the same time, I felt the weight of my own words. Because had I not tried to be my own king as well? Had I not placed my own selfish desires above my sacred duties to Yahweh? I too had much to repent for, both to my earthly father and the one who’d created me, a son of Levi, to fight for his people with the truth. For without that truth, and the clear understanding of both their identity and their God, how would Israel stave off the many enemies that crouched at our door? Unless we turned our faces fully toward Yahweh, we would continue to bow our knees to worthless idols and open the gates to the Enemy himself."

Our female protagonist is Keziah, the daughter of a clan chief among the portion of the tribe of Manasseh living across the Jordan River from the larger part of Israel. These trans-Jordan tribes have lost much of their memory of their history, their heritage, and the God who rescued them from Egypt. Keziah’s family is the same, worshiping a number of false deities instead of the One True God. A marriage has been arranged for Keziah that will protect her clan from coming attack. She is pledged to a man at least a decade older than her father, one who already has multiple wives and murdered one of them.
"I have learned of a power that far surpasses yours, no matter how many towns you overthrow or how much gold and silver you amass by treachery, lies, and deceit. And when you die surrounded by your ill-gotten gains, your name and memory will crumble into obscurity. But as the true and eternal king of Israel, Yahweh’s name will be glorious for all of time.”

Avidan and Keziah cross paths in interesting circumstances. From the point of their meeting, the pace and tension ratchet up. I was engrossed by their separate plot lines, but was wholly entranced by their combined story. And that story was strongly underpinned by the presence of God and His orchestration of events. The faith element of this story was exceptionally well done, and I loved its prevalence across the entire novel. I loved Avidan's developing talent and passion for telling the stories of Israel's history to those among their people who had forgotten them. Or had never known them to begin with. There were also some fantastic themes here, largely centered around fighting against your destiny, fighting for that same destiny when you embrace God’s plan for your life, and forgiving yourself and those closest to you for huge mistakes propelled by fear, made in the heat of the moment.
"Only the One Who Heals could mend wounds that lay so far below the ones on our skin."

"For the rest of my days, my mouth would boldly bear witness to his incomprehensible power and the unending, steadfast love he had for a people who did not deserve such grace.”

I absolutely loved this book, and I’m eager to continue with the series and learn where God takes the rest of the cousins. I’m also excited to dig into Cossette’s backlist, as I was captivated by her writing. If you’re someone who tends to skip over an Author’s Note at the end of a novel, please don’t miss this one. I found it profound and moving. It added even more dimension to an already incredible story. If you’re even remotely interested in Biblical fiction, especially focused around a vitally important but not often explored moment in Israel’s history, I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

A compelling new chapter in Cossette's Old Testament Saga that stands well on it's own, but is also a wonderful addition with familiar faces that you will recognize if you have been following along.

Avidan goes with his cousins to fight with the newly anointed Saul, but a rift separates him from his cousins and instead his path crosses with that of Keziah, who is escaping an unwanted marriage. Together can they face the challenges before them and trust in the Mighty God who brought them together?

A well crafted novel set in the tumultuous time right after Saul is anointed king over Israel, I loved how the author brings this time period to life, showing the division and disunity of the times. Keziah has a beautiful horse, I loved his loyalty to her and protective nature. Avidan is a faithful friend, and I liked seeing how he matures over the course of the book, recalling the histories of his people and sharing it with others.

Overall, this was a well done Biblical novel about a time period that I don't think I've often seen tackled in fiction before. I liked how the author brings to life the times through fictional characters, so that we can imagine what life might have been like for the Israelites. Engaging and well written, with captivating characters, plenty of adventure, romance and faith.

Such a good story! I loved Avidan and Keziah! Their story was so beautiful and sweet.❤️ As with all of Connilyn Cossette’s books, the faith element in this book was beautifully woven in. There was just enough action to keep me on the edge-of-my-seat. I find that I really enjoy plots where the characters are on traveling and are on a journey/mission, especially in historical fiction, so I enjoyed that part of the plot as well. Now I want to reread book 2 (I read them out of order😅) and I absolutely can’t wait for book 3!

"No longer did I fear the one who had crushed Egypt. I now understood how he offered mercy and protection to those who called on his name, guidance to those who sought his wisdom, and steadfast love to all of humankind from the very beginning. And if Yahweh heard the cries of Hagar the Egyptian, Rahab the Canaanite, and Eliora the Philistine, then surely he would hear me...wouldn’t he? "

This was the first of Connilyn's books that I've read, and I really enjoyed it. She's a great storyteller, and you can by the confident writing style that she did a lot of good research for this book.

The only thing I didn't care for was a word used near the end, but that was the only one and can be easily fixed with white-out.

My thanks to the author and Bethany House Publishers for the complimentary

Wonderful beginning of what promises to be a great series! I love the fact that the author chose to set the series during the early years of King Saul's reign, a setting that has not been explored much by authors of Biblical fiction.

In Voice of the Ancient, readers will be captivated by Avidan and Keziah's story. Avidan chafes under the restraints of his destiny as a Levite, longing for adventure and glory in service to the newly crowned king. Readers will find his journey compelling, as he learns that following his own will leads to unexpected consequences and disillusionment. Keziah is running away from an abusive betrothal and finds safety as she journeys with Avidan.

I found this to be an engaging blend of rich historical detail woven into a story filled with action, danger and a sweet romance. While there is a satisfying conclusion to Avidan and Keziah's story, the author masterfully leaves some loose threads, foreshadowing intriguing storylines as the series unfolds.

It felt SO GOOD to be reading a Connilyn Cossette book again! While I read slowly at first, once I got to the main inciting incident where Avi's quest begins, I became much more invested. I LOVE a good quest/road trip story (I've loved these since I was a kid!), so I really enjoyed following along on his journey--especially once he joined forces with Keziah! These two together... **Sigh** The way Avidan looked out for her and tried to make her feel safe with him was so sweet, and their friendship dynamic blossoming into love was so well done. Though they only knew each other for a short period of time before falling in love, it didn't feel rushed or unrealistic. Their relationship felt earned because of their shared experiences and I was able to buy into it.

I admired Keziah for her courage but also gentleness, and Avi for his commitment to loving and protecting his family--and those he "adopts" as family. I also loved that Avi was a storyteller and that he wasn't your typical warrior hero type.

The plot took so many twists, particularly toward the latter part of the book! Though I was ultimately satisfied with the story's ending, the route to that ending kept me on my toes. During the climax I was thinking, "Come on, Conni, give me a break!" because I was such a nervous wreck LOL!

Connilyn always puts a unique spin on her Biblical fiction by highlighting unexpected areas of the Biblical event or time period. This particular book shed light on Saul's early days as king--a period of Israel's history that tends to be overlooked--and the spiritual state of the tribes at this time. It was fascinating to see the different levels of idolatry that had crept in, from "small" misunderstandings of God's law in some towns or villages to full out paganism and perversion of the truth in other places. I felt just as disheartened as Avi to encounter Hebrews who didn't even know their own history anymore and had no idea where they came from. It's a sobering comparison to our own world these days... and the ending of the last chapter (you'll just have to read it to know what I'm talking about) convicted my own heart to remember WHO is the true King of Kings.

I'm really curious to see how the rest of this series plays out, and especially which cousin's story is up next. I loved Shalem, but Zevi and Gavriel were being a pain... I can just imagine the incredible character arcs that could be written for them though! I have a feeling they will both end up winning my heart in the end.

An excellent read and exciting start to a promising series! 5/5 Stars!

4.5🌟 I loved this so much!! I have never read biblical fiction and didn’t know what to expect. I loved the nonstop adventure and richness of story. Found family is my FAVORITE. It did feel like a YA at times but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable. I am really looking forward to the second book!

My first read by this author, and I have to say, I'm quite impressed! I loved the way the flavor of the setting and the time period came through, and I loved the way biblical details were worked in (have to admit with all the times I've read the Bible, I've never made that connection with Jabesh Gilead before)! Oh, while I'm saying that--I did have a bit of a hard time with the way some of the names were written--I'm guessing it was to be more authentic and add flavor? The only issue was that every time a known name or place name came up, I had to do a split-second mental translation to connect it to the Bible names and places I know. A small annoyance, but I did notice it, so I thought I'd mention it. ;)

I really wasn't sure what I was going to think of Avidan because usually rebellious characters don't sit very well with me. But Avi and his cousins were such regular and believable teenagers, straining against the bonds as they grew, and caught up in world-changing events perfectly calculated to stir their blood and make them want to be a part of something more. I didn't always like Avi's choices, but I understood them so well, and I never disliked him, even when his attitude was worst, which was also a shorter time than it might have been. I loved his bond with his cousins, and my heart hurt for his struggle after everything went wrong. And I loved the way he finally found his place in the work God had put before him--not exactly the thing he'd been fighting against, but not as far off from it as he imagined at first.

Keziah was a dear, and I loved the way her attitude reflected what would have been normal in her time--she had her hopes and fears about who she would marry, but she accepted the inevitable with grace and only fled when the situation spiraled significantly. I liked the realism of her struggles, both on the journey and spiritually. (Can I also say, I loved the fact that Avi knew she was a girl from the very beginning, even though he didn't let on?) All the talk about her Asherahs, etc. was a bit uncomfortable, especially when it was weirdly melded with leftover bits of worship to the true God, but it was a sobering reminder of how easy it is for a society to go off track spiritually and not even realize it. I loved watching her interest in learning from Avi (okay honestly, I just loved the dynamic between her and Avi overall) and seeing her begin to turn more and more toward the true God.

A couple small notes--I'm still a bit confused about the family's backstory and exactly how it all fits together (seriously, WHAT is it with me stumbling into book-one-but-the-series-is-a-sequel titles lately???). All those details left me confused for a while at the beginning, but once the story picked up more, it didn't bother me as much. Also I loved the cousin bonds so much that seeing the cracks left there at the end saddened me quite a bit. Also, there was one plot point that I did NOT expect to be left hanging... O.O (I know, I know, the others' stories are coming; it was just a more bittersweet ending in some ways than I was prepared for.) But those drawbacks aside, I very much enjoyed the story and will probably continue the series--when it comes out. (Perhaps I should have started with an earlier series... XD) 4.5 stars

BOOK REVIEW - Voice of the Ancient - Connilyn Cossette - 4/5 Stars

THE STORY
Connilyn Cossette is one of my favourite authors and I'm so in awe that she was able to write this story while being so unwell. While storywise it wasn't my favourite of hers, the lessons within the story were so profound and thought provoking. Voice of the Ancient is so rich in Biblical history that the whole time I was reading, I just wanted to go read my Bible to remind myself of the stories it contained. While I love my warrior battling heroes, this story was a welcome reminder that there is nothing glorious about war and that there are other ways to 'fight' that can be more powerful when you have Yahweh by your side. This book is a great kickoff and I'm so excited to read the rest of this series!

THE ROMANCE
I think the romance was the reason I didn't fully embrace this story. I have a personal pet hate for insta-romances that occur over a matter of a few days/weeks. Avidan and Keziah were extremely sweet but a bit too young for my liking. The older I get the more I want mature characters and romances.

THE TRUTHS
When you read through the early years of the Hebrew nation, the one consistency you'll notice is that they kept forgetting everything God had done for them which led them to sin and its consequences. We must always always remember the great things He has done for us, blessed us with and forgiven us for. When we forget, we begin to doubt God's goodness and promises and seek answers elsewhere leading us away from Him. So remember to count your blessings, be thankful and remind yourself and others of God's continued goodness to us, His loved ones.

After the time of the judges in the Bible, the people of Israel asked for a king. In 1 Samuel, Saul is chosen to be king. In reading the book Voice of the Ancient, I felt like I fell in to the this time period of Israel. I was able to look from with in; seeing the landscape, culture, and what life was like among the tribes. ⁣

Abidjan, a young Levite man struggles with his duty for his future. He runs off the help fight a battle for the newly crowned Saul. During the fighting one of his younger cousins goes missing, so he sets off to find him. On his journey he comes across the daughter of a powerful clan chief running away from her future. Together they travel, facing challenges together learning to rely and trust in Yahweh. This is a beautiful coming-of-age story, full of adventure, a sweet romance, and God’s love. Sometimes we don’t always understand why things happen the way they do, but we can rest in God’s sovereignty and overall plan. "In the kingdom to come, we may understand all.⁣
But for now, our eyes are blind to the ways of the Ancient One, are they not? Only Yahweh knows the end from the beginning. You, my new friend, do not."⁣

Thank you so much Bethany House for sending me this copy to read and review!⁣

I don't know where to begin, but my rating for this is a 3.5 star rating. I just wasn't a huge fan of this story. As much as I love me some Connilyn, I felt like the mystery of the missing cousin Shallem just still loomed over my head, and I never got the satisfaction of the ending.

However, I did enjoy Keziah and Avidan. I was more so a fan of Avidan than Keziah. Keziah just annoyed me at times. Avidan was such a great guy for all that he did for Keziah and his cousin. His other two relatives: Zevi and Gavriel.

I did like that Connilyn showed the realness of what some of the tribes did as far as changing their views of God and mingling with other Gods. That was interesting to read and see how both Avidan and Keziah knew the same God, but viewed Him differently.

Keziah's father irked me to no end, and Vadim was just ewww.

The premise surrounding King Saul was interesting, and how they went to war.

Overall, I will continue on with reading the sequel to see how the other cousins fared out and what they went through.

This book is an example of Biblical fiction at its finest. I really enjoyed spending time, deeply immersed in the Israel of the Old Testament. The beginning of King Saul’s reign was a turbulent time and reading this book brought the characters and their challenges to life for me.

I loved how the skill and the act of storytelling played such an important role. Through oral storytelling and song, the history of the Hebrews was taught, shared and preserved.

I loved the many storylines of loved ones being reunited and families being restored. Grace and forgiveness were generously extended and humbly received. I read about examples of sacrificial love that absolutely touched my heart and moved me to tears, more than once.

This beautifully written book is filled with history, adventure, danger, faith, restoration and, of course, some very satisfying romance. I absolutely loved it and I highly recommend it!

I received complimentary copies of this book from NetGalley and Bethany House Publishers. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I really liked this new release from Connilyn Cossette. She does a great job at bringing the era of biblical fiction to life.

A dual perspective novel of a storyteller and a wealthy girl who runs away from an arranged marriage.

My favorite parts of this story was the storyteller, how he was so passionate of the Bible and was sharing God's word to everyone who would listen. The friendship between the two characters was really great too. There were some surprises throughout the story that I really enjoyed. I can't wait for the sequel to come, and am wondering if it's going to continue the story where it left off.

*thank you to Baker Publishing for a copy of this book to read and honestly review.
