Her Orc King

Rate this book
Captured by slavers, sold at auction to brutal orcs, and dragged halfway across the realm…

I never thought I’d say this, but being kidnapped by a band of pillaging bandits wasn’t the low point of my life.

No, that came when a massive, scarred orc king decided I was his mate and refused to let me leave his cave.

Orcs are a vile race without a shred of propriety, and their king is the worst of all - he expects me to accept their wicked ways and doesn’t understand that my thoughts scatter whenever he removes his shirt. He insists on taking care of me - both my body and soul - and won’t take no for an answer.

But trouble brews in this remote kingdom. The orcs are keeping secrets, and I want to learn the truth. And I’m no longer certain I want to return to the human world. Maybe I want to stay right here, in King Gorvor’s arms.

Her Orc King is an orc fantasy romance with a big, scarred hero who falls hard for the stubborn human heroine. You’ll love it if you enjoy your books with a hint of kidnapping, size difference issues, and lots of steamy scenes. This is the first book of a series of standalones - each book can be read separately and features a happily-ever-after ending for that couple.

This felt like… if Finley Fenn’s orc books are a death metal band. This book is Imagine Dragons.
Here’s why.
This had a lot of similar elements, as most orc books do. Big green people living in a mountain/underground. Fated type mates. Lots of sniffing.
But where as Fenn’s orc aren’t always the nicest, the sex isn’t the sweetest, and orgies just be popping up. This was much more digestible for the general public…like Imagine Dragons. You might not like that band but I bet your mom knows the words to at least one of their songs.
Even though darker things are hinted at we aren’t seeing them first hand . Sexy stuff happens but it is much sweeter at first. Don’t get me wrong this is an orc book. Orcs like sex.
It didn’t go cartoonishly silly either which is the other direction orc books go. (I’m looking at you Layla Fae😂) don’t get me wrong I had a great time reading that bucket nonsense!
If you want a spicy and not super dark orc romance thats also not silly either. Boom I’ve found your book.

3.5 stars rounded up

Sweet with a heaping dose of monster love interest smuttiness (including knotting) and some fated mates made this a solid read. Human and orc culture differences, character development, some secrets, a touch of angst, a bit of danger, and awesome side characters rounded everything out. Epilogue a few months out that was also sweet and steamy was a lovely ending (and since this is the king and queen, we know we’ll see more of them). Written in first person, single POV of the h. No ow/om drama, no virgins, and bc discussed (herbal tea).

Her Orc King is the first book in the Black Bear Clan series and features Orc King Gorvor and Dawn. This story? What can I say about this story and all my feelings toward it?

description

Dawn has been snatched by slavers and is saved and brought to King Gorvor's small kingdom. She is not familiar with Orc customs and is understandably angry and desperate to escape what she feels is another captivity situation. Paraded in front of the Orcs to see if any of them scent her as their mate, it comes as a complete surprise to Dawn and Gorvor when he realizes she is his.

Without a second thought, Gorvor whisks her away to his dwelling eager to claim and protect his mate. Dawn is scared and reluctant and unsure of his true motives and thus there is a distrust between her and Gorvor. Despite the cultural differences, Gorvor is set on showing Dawn how amazing their life could be and Dawn is slowly coming around to the new life she could lead and being the new human Orc Queen.

Even though this should be a time of joy and celebration, danger is on the horizon and Gorvor has not disclosed everything to Dawn. Will Gorvor be able to not only protect Dawn but build their bond so they'll never be apart? Or will Dawn feel betrayed when everything comes out and their carefully constructed bond be broken?

“You’re beautiful. I never thought I’d find my mate, and there you were. So fucking perfect.”

Her Orc King was everything I love when reading romance. Dawn was a headstrong and fierce woman that let her femininity shine through when Gorvor was with her in and out of the bedroom. Gorvor was nurturing and caring and alpha male in the most intentional and powerful ways. The sexual tension in here was deliberate and sexy as hell. While this was spicy and erotic in many ways, it still had a solid plot and amazing character development. I loved reading how Dawn started out so unsure and distrustful but Gorvor was patient and giving and broke down all the walls she erected. In turn, Dawn showed Gorvor how to love her in all the ways she needed and gave Gorvor everything he had been hoping to have one day. Their intimate encounters started small and grew to something deeper and passionate in ways that made me melt. MELT I TELL YOU.

“I want your lips wrapped around my cock and to see you take so much you choke,” he growls. “Then I’d put you on your hands and knees and fuck you from behind so I could watch how your pretty pussy takes my knot. You’d be limp with pleasure, but I’d hold you up and pinch your nipples until you screamed and climaxed again and again.”

While the suspenseful part of this story was enjoyable and engaging, I loved the attention on their budding relationship. I adored when Dawn and Gorvor lost sight of what their bond stood for and I loved the way they found their way back to each other. Zoe did an an incredible job at creating realness and devotion between her MCs and balancing the sweet and the dirty.

“Do you like it, Dawn? Having a big orc mate who can fill you up with his seed over and over in a single night?”

Her Orc King was written with so much emotion. In times of uncertainty, it's true and pure love that saves us and continues to keep us safe. Gorvor and Dawn were everything and I can't wait to binge the rest of this series.

After being filled with rage over Finley Fenns Orcs, this was the perfect book to redeem Orc romance for me. An alpha, protect her at all costs hero, that cares about consent? Yes please. Perfect for Ruby Dixon fans.

"You never need to worry again, little mate. I'll protect you. From humans. From orcs. From anyone who would wish to hurt you."

4 stars!

This was another fantastic series start by Zoe Ashwood! Gorvor is a stern and respected orc king who values his subject's safety over everything else. Unfortunately, this translates to keeping his new mate in the dark surrounding his kingdom's origin and who the mysterious orcs hanging around the fringes of his clan are. Despite the immense attraction and satisfaction that Dawn finds in her mate's arms, she is determined to know every part of him and his kingdom which creates plenty of friction and angst between the new mates. There was plenty of action, steamy sex, and intrigue, and I'm so excited for the next book and more orc romance

Tropes: fated mates, hate-to-love-you, auctioned heroine, misunderstood hero, hidden community, secretive/alpha hero, kidnapped heroine, knotting

HER ORC KING was everything I look for in my orc romances -- big, protective orcs, feisty humans, culture shock, and high heat. And the cherry on top for me was the abundantly clear consent from the beginning. When Dawn is kidnapped and put on the auction block she finds herself bought by orcs and brought back to their village where the King quickly declares Dawn as his mate. But Gorvor, and the rest of the Black Bear orc clan are nothing like she was expecting.

I loved this book and I devoured Dawn and Gorvor's story. The writing and plot was quick and well paced with just the right amount of world-building to paint the picture. It's told completely from Dawn's POV and I loved seeing her learn about orc culture, connect with others, and make a home for herself. Dawn was a really enjoyable MC with her spirited personality, her bravery, and her determination to thrive no matter her circumstances. She falls quickly for her orc King but considering how swoony Gorvor was, I would have fallen quickly too.

Gorvor was the perfect blend of gentle and alpha and his compassion and loyalty to his people jumped off the pages. He's thrilled to have found his mate and I adored the way he treated Dawn; he respects her ideas and her autonomy, he worships her, and he's a total consent king in bed with just the right amount of push to make things sexy. Together, these two were on fire!

I can't wait to dive into the rest of this series and the authors' other books.

THIS is this orc romance I’ve been waiting on! Zoe Ashwood just became a must read for me - I loved every page of this!

What I liked:

•The characters - Not only did we get a heroine who was competent and not afraid to stand her ground, but our orc king is set on developing a healthy relationship with her. And the side characters? Im invested in every single one of them.

•The romance - Mating bonds always come across as a little instalove for me, and this had that same feeling. But there was this initial phase of Dawn and Gorvor’s relationship where they took the time to acclimate and learn the other’s wants and needs. I loved watching their relationship grow with their love! And that spice? SO GOOD. 🔥🔥🔥

• The plot - Listen, I’m a character over plot reader. As long as characters are well developed and interesting, I can read through any plot. But this one had me so invested in the safety of this orc village. It definitely takes a backseat to the romance, but I liked the setting up we got of this world for the rest of the series.

What I didn’t like:
• Honestly, I’m just upset I didn’t get longer with this couple. Ashwood established some really great secondary characters, and I’m assuming their stories will take up the next few books…and I’m hoping for constant visits from our king and queen.

Overall, this is a solid addition to my monster romance reads, and I can’t wait to continue this series!

HR Letter vs Sci-Fi Letter Fun Read
For my own entertainment (because I never know what to choose from my TBR) I've chosen a book starting with the same letter from two genres: Historical Romance and Sci-Fi Romance.

This the Sci-Fi for the letter H
3 stars
★★★☆☆

I know I'm supposed to choose a sci-fi and this is fantasy, but it's the one that call my attention the most among my non-HR, H-starting TBR books.

It was a decent orc romance book. Nothing stood out, it did a lot of the common tropes in the genre, and was generally well written. If you have wanted to dabble in a monster and/or orc romance, I would recommend this as a starting point. It isn't dark, it isn't heavy-handed on the size difference, protectiveness, or public schmex, but it hits all the subgenre high points.

This was a spicy love story with fated mates and a fast burn. Dawn was an interesting character with a lot of baggage from her life so far. She had been tossed from bad situations to worse until she ended up with her orc king. She was prickly but compassionate. Gorvor was enigmatic and very horny, with devotion to his mate’s well being but difficulty being open about much. I get that the mate bond helped her open up fairly quickly, but I thought she trusted him awfully quickly for how hurt she was. I also thought a lot of her apologies were less necessary than she thought they were. But it was still cute.

Spice: 5/5

Okay they cute for that. I like the “mystery” of what the clan does but I think that it could be longer for more character depth and world exploration.

Orcs are my absolute favorite!

This story did not disappoint, I loved Dawn and Gorvor’s story!

Dawn had had an extremely rough life and is sold at a slave auction, but luckily she is bought by orcs that (even though she has no clue) don’t intend to hurt her.
Gorvor is the king of the territory and knows immediately that Dawn is his mate. I live fated mates and it’s so well done in this book! The plot is interesting and the spice is amazing!!

Highly recommend this book and I can’t wait for more!

This is my first ever Orc story and I freaking loved it. It was a short, fun book that was just easy to read!

We’ve got a human sold into slavery, fated mates, hidden agendas, prejudices to over come. It was a little sprinkle of everything that turned into the sweetest romance. That’s right, I said sweetest in relation to Orcs. But it’s exactly what it was. I just fell in love with the characters and I don’t know about you guys, but I am desperately seeking more of Vark 😭

I am here for the Orcs of the Black Bear Clan and am looking forward to reading some more.

Nothing really wrong with the writing per se (other than the FMC being blatantly annoying), but it’s just not for me. I got to 48% and I’m giving up. 🛑🫥

For one, this book seems to have an agenda that is very passive aggressively sprinkled throughout the text and, for the given genre, does not blend well at all. I mean, we’re supposed to be focusing on mythical creatures (orcs) in a mythical land FFS that buy people at auctions. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Then the author continues on to either get distracted by this agenda or is consumed by it when developing her plot and any mythical/fantastical story that could have been developed is completely lost to it. 🫡☠️

The spice that I read was ok. But that’s about it. No depth, heart, or creativity to be found here, unfortunately. 💔😬

I came across this book because I was on Libby and the book I was looking for wasn’t available. So I clicked “similar”. I started with this big green guy on the cover and pretty much from the beginning I was hooked.

I eventually downloaded the KU book literally so I could just go back and highlight the spice. It happens early on and often. And then there’s an actual good plot!? Excuse me!? Sold.

This was a sweet orc romance. The orcs were good people, the human FMC settled into life with the orc king MMC very quickly (it’s a short romance, okay), and there was external plot to move the series as well. I wanted a touch more depth to the relationship, but still enjoyed the read.

2.5 - I would have DNF-ed this one if it wasn’t so short. Everything in this felt like a cliche. I don’t mind cliches in general, but this book had too much for me. I’m a character driven reader and the characters especially felt cut and paste and didn’t have much depth.

This book really hit the spot with its blend of sultry monster romance and those spicy elements that make your heart race a bit faster. I'm all in for the fated mates storyline—it just adds that extra layer of 'meant to be' that I can't resist. The exploration of the cultural rifts between humans and orcs, coupled with meaningful character arcs, hidden tidbits, a dash of emotional turmoil, a hint of risk, and the dynamite secondary characters, really tied the whole narrative together beautifully.

The King and Queen captured my heart entirely. Witnessing the evolution of their love was a highlight, from the Queen's eventual embrace and advocacy for the orc community to the King's fair leadership and unwavering commitment to his queen and their people. I'm seriously thinking about diving into the rest of the series just to catch more glimpses into their enchanting world.

A pleasant and short read—like a long novella, or that’s what it felt like. Because of the length there was very little conflict, or I guess that’s not right, there could have still been a lot of conflict—but point is, there wasn’t. There were a few bumps in the road between Dawn and Gorvor, but not many, and nothing serious. Nice sexy read though, and my first orc book.
