On the hunt, her source disappears, leaving Kat with more questions than she’s prepared to answer.
Thrust into a snare of torture, murder and treason, Kat must decide if she’s strong enough to chase down the people who are trying to sell the technology despite what her broken body and mind tell her.
What she doesn’t realize is how many lives are on the line – including her own.

This is book seven of the Kat Beckman Thriller series and the stress and strains of her recent cases as well as her PTSD from Afghanistan have finally hit home, leaving her to be placed in a treatment centre for a month. She has just got back home to her husband Van Beck and their two dogs, Tyrant and Dillon, and is under Dr May’s orders to rest. But a phone call to her desk at The Hot Sheet, the online paper where she is the senior investigative reporter and Van is the Editor-in-Chief, soon has her wondering if a rest is really the best thing for her. She tries to tell the caller, Logan Galbo, that she isn’t taking any cases at the moment, but he tells her national security is at risk, with secret weapon technology possibly being sold overseas. Logan works for Alphacon, a company with a large contract for the US Navy, and Logan is worried after two other members of his team had disappeared without trace. He has found worrying emails and other information on their servers, showing that his bosses, Jeff Morrow, the new CEO, and Zeke Estes, the head of security, as well as a Sam Rutger, have been discussing selling the technology to others. Kat finally agrees to meet with Logan, but it seems someone has been following him and sees Kat with him, placing her in danger yet again. Van is worried about her jumping straight back into an investigation, having had to look after himself and the dogs whilst she was away, as well as the paper, plus the stress of seeing her fall apart completely. The tech is already on one of the Navy’s newest destroyers, the USS Protea, with a small team of engineers from Alphacon there to oversee the installation and initial testing of the new laser weapon, going under the name of the MARS project. One of them, Roy Robinson an engineer, is querying the readings they are getting from the device, with them being far more powerful than expected. After Kat’s initial refusal to undertake any investigation, Logan had tried calling the San Francisco branch of NCIS and spoke to Special Agent Paul (Paulina) Vegas, but since he had no real proof of what he thought was happening, other than a few emails, she wasn’t able to do anything to help him, even though he thought he was in danger! When he suddenly disappears after sending more information on to Kat, Van steps in to help her stop whoever is behind this threat to national security and to hopefully find Logan before something happens to him. Treason is high on the agenda and those behind it all want to know what Logan has shared and with whom, so they can plug all the leaks. They are willing to torture and kill to get their final payout, which will only come about if the test firing of the weapon goes ahead without any issues. Kat doesn’t realise how close she may become to being a target, whilst Van gets a close up and personal threat to him and those he loves, as the gloves come off. Kat struggles at every step to hold it all together, despite her mind bringing back the horrors of the past and leaving her mind and body broken. She isn’t the sort of person who can just sit around and do nothing. Once her head is in an investigation, she will want to see it through to the bitter end! There are many more lives on the line than even she could have ever imagined, with one being someone very close to her and her family, from the incident in Afghanistan all those years ago. He and others are in peril, with a weapon that has been made more deadly and from people willing to see them all die, just to get a huge payout! Another cracking investigation for Kat and Van, with danger at every turn, but also showing the very physical and psychological damage that all these cases have done to Kat and how she is trying to cope with it all, using Dillon as a support dog and having the love of Van and their son Jack. I can’t wait to see what they might get mixed up in next! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Kat Beckman, investigative journalist, has suffered more than her fair share of traumas in her life. This story picks up just as she is completing a voluntary sabbatical at a mental health facility where she went to learn some new coping techniques for her PTSD. Just prior to her discharge, her therapist cautioned Kat to “take it easy” and not jump right back into everything at once. Good advice but I guess the therapist didn’t realize that just isn’t how Kat rolls. Besides, fate has big plans for Kat. She is immediately drawn into a dangerous web of treachery when she decides to take on an investigation concerning treasonous government contractors developing highly advanced laser weaponry capable of changing the world’s balance of power. This just isn’t the kind of thing Kat can turn her back on or delegate to another journalist. She jumps in with both feet and brings her husband, Van, along for the ride. I would like to think the technology at the center of this story is total fiction but with the advances being made at record speed these days, who knows!? I don’t have to have every single loose thread tied up at the end of a story – I like the potential of having certain issues/characters reappear in future installments as a unifying thread for a series. If you like fast-paced, action-filled intrigue centered around outstanding characters being pushed to their limits, you have found your perfect “next read”. Enjoy!
Please note: I firmly believe that you could fully enjoy and understand the events of this book without having read the previous books in this series, but I would highly recommend reading them because this is a riveting series filled with amazing plotlines, great characters, and awesome dogs!
Kat Beckman has to fight her own demons in order to be able to do her job as an investigative reporter. She fears for her family and friends but she does not hesitate once she is set in the story to do what she has to do. The Project has a believable plot that could unfortunately happen, is well-written and fast-paced grabbing the reader's attention from the beginning. Another great addition to the Kat Beckman series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
This was a compelling story but also an eye opener. This really seemed like a warning of what could happen in our world. The real world. Bless those who would be willing to risk everything to do what's right.
