🎶 Oh happy days, happy days 🎶

Anyway.

If you are from the Philippines, you've probably seen a comic strip or two from @tarantadongkalbo. Well, he just recently released his 3rd book, and this one mostly chronicles the happenings from the recent Philippine elections (which really feels like a different timeline - more on that later) and the pandemic.

His illustrations and words are always spot-on. They are rooted in reality, which is kind of sad, because it is our reality.

While I have seen some of the strips in this book online, there are still some that have surprised me, and opened up a can of emotions that I've suppressed since May 2022 aka the darkest timeline (I know a lot of us have done the same thing, and have been kind of on auto-pilot since). Even just seeing the 'dancing sibuyas' on the inside cover already broke me, and took me back to that time when hope was what I truly felt.

I like the way the comic strips were arranged: light (somehow) at first, and then heavy, and then finally, some hope at the end.

It was the last few pages (esp page 205) of this book that really did me in, though. I was not prepared for that 😅🥺😭 I did not want to feel this way again, but I guess, I also needed to. I'll quote from 13 Going on 30: 𝒘𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅. 𝑰𝒇 𝒘𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕, 𝒘𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒛𝒆 𝒊𝒕 -- 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒇 𝒊𝒕 𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒖𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒚𝒆𝒔.

Five stars, kahit masakit.

And I share these sentiments with him.

We may have lost the election, but the fight for good governance will always be our advocacy. That election season, which TK so wonderfully portrayed in this edition, will always be close to our hearts. And to that, I thank TK, for perfectly capturing our sentiments through every page of this book. Salamat, Kakampink. Lalaban pa rin tayo.

What a year it has been. I can’t believe that it’s already December and how we’ve felt a whirlwind of emotions in the early months of 2022. Thank you, Tarantadong Kalbo for helping me relive all the hopeful memories and all the raw emotions I should carry to continue to fight this battle for our country. We may not know what the future brings but seeing your work always give me the spark to #NeverForget. And with that, “Patuloy tayong titindig.”

I love Tarantadong Kalbo’s works and this is his most subversive and political anthology yet! As a Leni supporter, this is so relateable in so many levels and is a good souvenir of the Election Season and a good reminder of what transpired during 2022.

This is a perfect way to look back at the 2022 elex. Bonus points kung babasahin mo sya ng 2024 with non-existent "unity". Salamat TK!

The foreword by Lourd de Veyra does a great job of framing this third compilation of Tarantadong Kalbo's brilliant comics. He describes him as being more than a political cartoonist but more as an opinion columnist in his own right even if no broadsheet newspaper carries his byline.

If Volume 2 did an amazing job of capturing our life in quarantine with all the ridiculous decisions made in the name of the pandemic, Volume 3 captures the emotional lead-up to the 2022 Presidential Elections. And beyond his amazing ability to capture such nuanced moments and insights based on Philippine current events and headline stories, he speaks with an amazing genuineness that shines through even with a single-panel comic.

One of the most emotionally impactful parts of this book is how he responded to the backlash by some Leni supporters to his "y a s s i s t a 💖" comic. Most cartoonists don't break format and "reply" to readers through their art, which is exactly what he did.

And you don't expect a compilation of comics to have a narrative flow to it, but that's exactly what we got here. You feel the build-up to the elections, the fires of hope that we might actually get a better level of leader, and of course the actual results and how we all reacted to our new reality. And to wrap it all up, he ends with a call to continue to resist and to fight for what's right.

And he didn't have to do that. He could have just ended things with a joke. But not TK - he ended it by continuing to raise his voice and speak truth to power.
