In the two decades following the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the dissolution of a way of life held for centuries is forcing Scottish clan landholders across the Highlands and Islands to navigate rapid emigration and economic change, while trying to preserve some remnants of their culture.
For Clan MacLeod on the Isle of Skye, that means putting their faith and future in the hands of young Alexandra Flora MacLeod. She is the newly declared heir to the current laird at Castle Dunmara and will be only the second woman clan chief to serve in over five centuries.
With the challenges ahead of Alexandra, it is only natural to want to hold fast and raise her shield to protect herself, her family, and her future. However, through a series of unexpected events, she is forced to leave the comfort and security of her home for the crowded and soot-covered city of Edinburgh. There she discovers the mysterious life of her father and a new love she never knew was before her.
