Scarlett and Connie are finally closing in on the truth of what happened ten years ago, but Daeg Gallus is determined to eliminate all obstacles to the Holy Grail of Eris, with Connie and her fiancé Randolf at the top of the list. To thwart their plan, Connie allows herself to be framed and imprisoned, ensuring Randolf's freedom. But she never dreamed her actions would result in the first order of execution in ten years—with her head on the chopping block!
Although not as strong as the second book, this brings things to a very satisfying close. Nothing can change the tragedies of the past, but people can recognize them for what they were and move to prevent history from repeating, and that seems to be the theme here. Ultimately Scarlett and Connie are pawns in a much bigger game, but that doesn't mean that action can't be taken as the players learn that the pieces matter, too.
Definitely one of the best plotted and written light novel series currently available in English. (And one of the shortest, too!)
That was probably my favourite new series this year, and one of the best « Villainess » light novels I have read. This is mostly because it did not try to cling to the tropes of that particular subgenre, but instead attempted to be a fantasy Victorian Noir mystery, and turned out to be very good at it.
The previous volume had been a bit weak, particularly toward the end, but this one was great. It was also the last one of the trilogy, so it tied up neatly all the various threads of the series : Scarlett reconciled with her father and got her revenge, Connie and Randolph managed to outwit Daeg Gallus and prevent the war with Faris, and then Scarlett moved on to the afterlife… and then promptly came back to keep haunting (or rather watch over) Connie for the rest of her life.
I appreciate the fact that the story was only three books long instead of dragging on an interesting plot over too many books like so many light novels do. However, this is not apparently not the actual end of the series, since there is also a Volume 4 that is in fact a sequel, but it has yet to be translated.
