Detective Jim Higgins becomes suspicious when stolen Iraqi treasures from the National Museum in Baghdad show up in a La Crosse, Wisconsin, antique store. But that’s just the beginning. A delivery truck is bombed, and the driver is killed. The discovery of its surprising cargo deepens the sinister mystery. Higgins and his team must untangle the source of the ancient stolen antiquities and find a murderer with a dark, evil secret.
The most interesting parts of this book are the relationships between the characters. The "mysteries" seem to get solved almost too readily. Although the author does a lot of foreshadowing to help the reader in case we're too slow to catch on the first time.... This is especially true when it comes to an "unexpected" pregnancy - we all know it before the parties involved catch on!
I like the characters in Sue Berg’s Driftless series, for the most part anyway. There’s an artificial quality about Jim Higgins and the bible quotes mixed with an out of date preachiness doesn’t set well with me. I know Sue Berg’s a woman of faith and I imagine it is natural for her to add this quality to her books. I can’t fault her for that but it makes it difficult for me to continue on with the Driftless series.
The Driftless mysteries are written well, and I enjoy them and would do so even more if there wasn’t a detailed description of each character’s outfit and hairdo. What is it about Jim’s hair that must be commented upon quite often? Is it really strange? I doubt it.
I’ve lived in LaCrosse and enjoy reading about areas I’ve been. It’s a special place. I think I need to watch Grumpy (and Grumpier) Old Men again!
Continuing onward with the second book in the (A Jim Higgins Driftless Mystery) series by Sue Berg "Driftless Treasure " is a well designed story. The continuous characters, southwestern Wisconsin setting, and an ending that hints of more tales to follow in this series. Maybe a baby, marriage, and more criminal activity will be the next story or two. copy right 2021 365 pages chapter of next book, Driftless Deceit
