A young woman’s liaison with a ‘powerful man’. NOT #MeToo – on the contrary, it becomes inspiring and empowering for her. Set within the multinational environment of a large bank in the late eighties, the novella contains reflections on cultural differences between Europeans and Americans and capitalism in general. It has explicit content.
Ursula Mirbach has worked for many years at an international organisation in Brussels. She is now into writing prose and poetry.
In May 2021, she has published her first novel, 'Phoenix - 1st Act', available on Amazon. It is about a descent into alcohol dependency and the path to recovery. It contains a critical analysis of the 12-step programme used by Alcoholics Anonymous as well as an attempt to create a renewed, non-religious 8-step programme, based on the teachings of the Epicureans and Stoicists to help alcoholics coping with daily life and remain sober.
The novel is addressed to fellow alcoholics, physicians and psychologists involved with alcohol addiction issues and everybody else interested in the subject of alcoholism and life within the Brussels international community.
I feel really bad because I was lucky enough to win this book from a Goodreads giveaway. Honestly this reads like a textbook and the narration is very awkward. The sexy parts of the book feel mechanical and the rest of it sounds like a person making excuses for their behavior when they really don’t need to.
I had a hard time getting into the book. The characters were one dimensional and flat to me. The story slow moving and plodding. There were a couple moderate sex scenes. I actually feel like the book was a waste of my time.
I won this book on Goodreads and sadly, I didn’t enjoy it. I read until the end waiting for it to get better and it never did. This is a first for me with my wins on Goodreads.
Interesting plot taking us back to the ‘80’s, to the world of investment banking in Germany. Reading about the fashion and happenings of the time was fun, and the plot was on point too. I thought the book had a rather abrupt ending, but that sort of fit into a tale about a young German woman. Enjoyed the well written story! I received this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.
I won a Kindle copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Unfortunately, I tried but couldn't get into the story or characters. The book was really boring, and I couldn't relate to the protagonist, the setting, or the sardonic tone. Did not finish.
