Before the War of the Lance, magic faced and fought its own demise.
The Journeyman is charged to use the ancient Anvil of Time to travel back along the river of time and find the lost stories that fell between the pages of the history books.
He finds Tythonnia, a young red robe learning magic in company with Ladonna of the black robes and Par-Salian of the white. The three are sent on an easy quest to find the leader of the renegade wizards, a man named Berthal, but if it was that simple, they wouldn't need mages. Instead, what started out easy turns into betrayal - magic against sorcery, the wizards against each other, and Tythonnia against herself. When Berthal finally unleashes his final attack, everyone knows that it won't end that simply.
I hate bios - it's the only time I have writer's block - but, in a nutshell, I was: 1) Born in Saudi Arabia 2) Lived there for 12 years 3) Went to school in Hell… er… Houston, Texas for 8 years. 4) Moved to Montreal, Quebec and in doing so, found the glove that fit my hand. 5) I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
So instead of those dry boring tidbits, I present the Frequently Asked Questions concerning Lucien Soulban. You know you've been waiting for it! The following questions come from the patient folks who frequent my Live Journal as well as some of the questions I've heard in my lifetime.
A novel that is part of the Dragonlance universe. In this one the use of the old magic is spreading. The wizards devise a plan where they will send one member of each order to infiltrate and find out more of these renegade magic users.
This was a strong novel for this world. The aspect that jumps out was the strong characterization. Although the three main characters are united in their cause we see their differences that pertain to their orders and how they would like to accomplish their mission. The author does a terrific job of looking into these character's minds. This book has several plot arcs like wondering if oneself is on the right path or evil plans to obtain more power. It also questions who the real heroes are and who are the real villains. Fans of this world will enjoy a prequel look at two characters that have major roles in this world.
I believe fans of this universe will especially enjoy this novel. One doesn't have to have vast knowledge of this universe to understand the proceedings as this can be read as a stand alone book. If you are a fan of magic users this book has plenty of that.
This series keeps getting better! I just finished Renegade Wizards and loved it. It takes place years before the War of the Lance, around the time of the Defenders of Magic series, I believe. Young Par-Salian and Ladonna join with a young red robe to uncover the threat of renegade sorcerers who refuse to follow the laws of magic laid out by the Orders of High Sorcery. The use of magic felt very true to the original books, and I liked the trained hunters hired by the Orders. Tythonnia, the red robe in the group, had the potential to be a bit flat and one note but I was pleasantly surprised at how her character developed. Again, I really enjoyed this book and this series overall.
I accidently read this book without reading the other two, and had no idea who the characters were because it's been years since I've even looked at a dragonlance novel, but I was pleased with it. One of the main characters is LBGT which was a pleasant suprise, and handled fairly well. Her struggle was a sidestory going on with the main plot but it didn't detract from the book as a whole and I felt enriched the character.
I really enjoyed this book. Lucien did a good job of describing the characters and events so that you felt like you were really there. I also enjoyed how the main character struggled with finding her sexuality and if she was attracted to men or women, very nicely done.
