This book is life changing. Pastor Matt, you’re a genius with words. I devoured this book and I’m reading it again 10000%!!! It helped put so much into perspective at a time when I needed it more than I can explain. This book hits you in places you didn’t think it would and my relationship with God has grown so much from it!
Pastor Matt, I know I will never see my donkey missions the same again. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such an outstanding pastor and Jesus-loving role model. 💙
Great book that makes you slow down and think about your greater purposes. This book was written by my pastor about life’s “donkey missions”. As relating to the story of Saul, sometimes you seem to be on these pointless missions or times in your life, yet He is really setting you up for something bigger. This book takes you through biblical stories, Pastor Matt’s own personal stories and teaches you to embrace your own donkey missions.
How easy is it to give up on something that seems mundane and pointless. Pastor Matt Keller's book has given me perspective to see how nothing is pointless and every "donkey mission" is a part of God's greater mission for our lives. Thank you Pastor Matt for being obedient in writing this book.
My former pastor wrote this book, and it’s amazing! Super easy read, packed with SO MUCH good biblical advice, and wisdom. It’s the perfect book to read when you’re not sure of the direction of your life, or why certain situations are occurring when you pictured things to be so different. 10/10.
This book feels more like the author's free association on random topics loosely guided by a story that is taken out of context. The author went through a wide range of topics that included patience, humility, temptation, perseverance, integrity, etc. The teachings on these topics are mostly on point, but the interpretative frame from 1 Samuel Chapter 9 seems problematic. To the author's own repeated admissions, readers must stretch their imagination to connect the Biblical narrative to the lessons at hand.
The most serious issue with the author's approach is that anything could become justified as a donkey mission. There is no attempt to help readers think about what kind of pursuits might be temptations and distractions that carry us away from genuine discipleship. Saul's donkey mission was not related to pursuing God, nor did he pray or seek God's guidance in the process (until his servant convinced him at the end). God didn't really want Israel to have kings. Saul's donkey mission was interrupted by a reluctant anointing that ultimately led to a murderous kingship. It begs the question: Why glorify donkey missions? Why not turn away (repent) from donkey missions that at best promises temporary worldly recognition and instead focus on the small acts of following in God's mission?
