written by a leading numerical cosmologist who's Physics Chair at Edinburgh, this brief book is a fantastic gateway to the latest updates in cosmology. It contains one of the clearest layman's explanations and verbal descriptions of the stages of the early universe, as well as a thorough introduction to numerical cosmology, the steps by which it's done and the subdivisions of astronomy to which it has been applied. As the author says in the lead-up of this book, there is no grander question than why the cosmos is the way it is, and now thanks to scientific developments we have the tools at hand to explore this question objectively. At 180 pages, this book is such a great privilege to read during a long commute.

Prof Davé is an O.G. numerical cosmologist whose work is widely published and cited within the field. It's no wonder that he also carries the ability to make his knowledge accessible to the wider public through his narration of advances made in cosmology, particle physics and galaxy formation & evolution. As a young astrophysicist, I found the book thoroughly entertaining and elucidating in parts. An intensely enjoyable read for the lay-person, curious wanderer, and the expert.

A book that makes the parallel between the current state of knowledge in Cosmology (what we know about the way the universe is formed) and the current advancements and trends in computer universe simulation , and finishing with extrapolations toward the future and the year 2100. How will Quantum computing change the paradigm? How fine will we be able to go. Didactic and interesting.

I have found that spending time on adjacent topics to your main career can be the catalyst for new ideas. Indeed trying to simulate the almost infinite number of stars from the big bang forward, makes simulating the billions of transistors in an integrated circuit seem like child's play. The techniques to lower the complexity while maintaining the necessary fidelity was worth the read.

The part I enjoyed most was that the simulation of galaxy formation and the emergence of a web of galaxies through this simulation generally agreed with the observations that came later. Not seeding the starting conditions to finish with the known answer, gave numerical cosmology the credit it deserves. The book was well written, and the author had quite a bit of humor and gave interesting analogies to explain the complex.

I liked the book's treatment, which explains very well the origin of the universe, up to the origin of galaxies, also drawing parallels with the work of simulating that evolution and the limitations of that simulation. I liked that at the end, he explains Wolfram's theory of universe formation. If you want to learn more about whether we live in a simulation, I suggest reading The Silent Y: Humanity's Wave in the AI Era: Volume III by Nolan E. Rivers, which offers a philosophical analysis of the topic.
