The year is 1943, and Ivy Jones has been sent to Beacon's Ash. A remote, private English school for unmarried mothers, Beacon's Ash is ruled by the vicious Jeremiah Kane, a man who has a reputation for cruelty.
But are the ghosts of his former students haunting the school at night?
Ivy soon discovers that one student in particular, Abigail Cartwright, died a particularly horrific death. Is Abigail now haunting the school, desperate for vengeance? Is Jeremiah Kane simply a madman, or does he have a higher calling? And is the Devil really coming for the girls?
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
This was a story about a residential "school" for unmarried and pregnant young girls. Run by a sadistic and fanatically religious pervert, who took great delight in torturing and abusing the children in his "care". He was ably assisted by a "quack" doctor and an alcoholic matron. Only one girl was strong enough to confront this monster and with horrific results. The story was well written, the characters were all believable but I found the book to be sad and depressing, hence my low score.
“It's almost midnight!” he snarls, pushing the door open and limping into the room, leaning heavily on his walking stick. “What's so important that you couldn't wait until -” He stops suddenly, and for a moment even he seems shocked by the sight of the dead girl on my table. Or maybe, knowing him, it's not shock at all; maybe it's a sense of fulfillment, a sense that once again the world has proved him right. Maybe he thinks this was supposed to happen all along. “Abigail Cartwright,” he mutters, making his way over to take a closer look at the girl's corpse. “I can't say I'm surprised.”
I really enjoy reading books by Amy cross, really easy reading, great story telling and character development in her stories, and they keep your gripped and want to keep reading .
