As a deadly red algae bloom sweeps uncontrolled across the globe, those who survive will be tested to their limits - and beyond. Tired of the usual post-apocalyptic tale? Welcome to your new addiction.
In the Atlantic, a red tide has blossomed unlike any seen before. Maiming and killing plants, animals, and humans who experience even the slightest exposure, it grows out of control - both in salt and fresh water - wreaking havoc across the world.
On the Gulf Coast, disgraced biologist Sam Griffin makes a discovery about the algae that could lead to the cure - if he could convince anyone to believe him.
Texas schoolteacher Misty Swanson waves goodbye to her parents as they embark on a cruise, clueless as to the danger they - and she - are about to be thrust into.
And a disgraced senator with connections to the disaster who crawled inside a bottle must pull himself out to rescue his estranged wife and sick child - or die trying.

Sometimes you have to kill a few frogs to find your…
… apocalypse cure. Great read! I definitely enjoyed it & I’m looking forward to continuing on to Book 2. This story, Dark Tide, is a foundational one for all the books to come. Chock full of solid character development & rich world building. It is a bit frustrating to me, however - & this is just me personally as a reader & my preferences - when a character has to fight so long & hard (no spoiler, just a generality) simply “to be heard.” So we can get on with the story. That sensation of …. dragged out frustration with no relief ….. is not one I particularly enjoy in a book. And about 60% of the way through, I almost gave up on this story. But I stuck with it & I’m glad I did. As it’s a fairly unique take on the apocalypse theme. With complex main characters who have “never say die” attitudes, no matter how dire their situations. As well as intriguing secondary characters. And though I’ve yet to see much of my “frustration” situation resolved, though I’ve swiped the final page on Book 1. I do have hope all will be settled /achieved just a chapter or a half dozen into Book 2! So, overall, this 1st book in this series by Brook & Kraus is absolutely worth checking out. And meets the usual outstanding level of writing by the pair. So! I’m off to seek my adventure & resolution in Book 2 (& continue to be a witness to all bullfrogs everywhere’s great sacrifice in the name of the health humanity!)…. Maybe ….. ? …..
The writing itself was decent with not a lot of editing issues (there was a knofe instead of a knife); there could have been more, but I ended up having to skim through some of this. Red bloom algae is a very real environmental issue, and this plot had a red algae on steroids. There is a hint that the nature of this "outbreak" is not natural. My biggest issue is that there are no really decent characters to cheer on, except Luna the dog. Greg Paulson is a completely sleazy and self-serving politician and execrable human. Rabia Laurent and her group are possibly complicit in what is happening and only frantic to get themselves to a place of safety. Why belong to a group that offers this type of escape if you have to get a quorum in the "Algaepocalypse" to vote on what you need to accomplish this? Misty Swanson does the very foolish thing of heading toward danger to rescue her parents who are likely already out to sea, getting her best friend killed and running back to a toxic ex. Sam has more potential, but nit-picks and agonizes about his expulsion and shunning from the CDC. Yep that really just leaves Luna the dog, but I can't justify continuing the series to see if Luna is OK. I will just pretend she is still standing tall at the end.
A hideous red algae that causes a worldwide 'algaepocalypse', killing any life-forms it touches, may be man-made, but who will dare to become a whistleblower, as he's slandered by his cowardly bosses and disheartedly decides it's in his family's best interests if he goes home to save them, before it's too late...but what obstacles must be overcome along the way? Meanwhile a woman who fears the worst, having paid for her parents to take an anniversary cruise and being unable to contact them, speeds to the coast, hoping against hope for good news. What happens to her travelling companion? DF Brook and Mike Kraus' excellent Dead Sea series opener Dark Tide will bring back memories of the Jaws franchise tag-line, 'Don't go in the water!' as it grips you firmly by the imagination throughout. The Dark Tide is a gripping, unputdownable thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. It's a heart-pounding race against time as our heroes try to find a cure for the deadly red algae bloom that is sweeping the globe. Was twists and turns at every bend this is a must read for fans of apocalyptic fiction.
Sorry, I haven't finished this book but, so far, I don't like it. You have almost every character being vicious or just mean. I know that's the way most of these books are written but this one is over the top. It doesn't make me want to finish it.
This story takes you through a lot of danger. How will the survivors make it through. Each page keeps you guessing as to what could possibly happen next. Once again Mike Kraus has teamed up with another talented author.
This was a great start to a new series, chock full of red algae, cross country driving and the evil that can follow panic. There’s good folk as well and that gives balance. A good read!
I struggled thru 1/3 of the book and gave up. Just seems poorly written plus the writer seems to have a serious bias against the southern US states, making several derogatory comments. I'm passing on this series.
This is a series of 6 books and I just finished the last novel. It’s a fast paced story of worldwide disaster. Interesting characters trying to survive it and some looking to stop it.
