«Caminamos bajo una vía de Shinkansen mientras escuchamos el sonido de trenes de alta velocidad que pasan sobre nuestras cabezas, acompañados de vez en cuando del de un tren más lento en las vías y puentes a nuestra derecha.
Aquí, en este universo subterráneo, nada se mueve a excepción de nosotros. Nada cambia aparte de las luces de los semáforos. Me atrapa esta visión de un mundo comprimido, llano y sin cielo, que se extiende hacia el infinito.»
Las ilustraciones de este libro son un portal a otro mundo, una puerta de entrada al Tokyo nocturno a través de los ojos del artista polaco. La forma en que capta la luz —o las luces, mejor dicho— cuando cae la noche y lo materializa en el papel es increíble. Un oasis para descansar la vista después de un día de trabajo y pantallas. Además, las anotaciones que acompañan a cada una de las ilustraciones sirven como punto de apoyo para sumergirte todavía más en cada uno de los paisajes urbanos que se nos presentan.

Penso di star iniziando a sviluppare una sorta di ossessione per Urbanowicz, visto che, se esistesse un altro volume di illustrazioni dedicate a Tokyo, lo comprerei immediatamente per immergermici dentro.
Rispetto al mondo delle 𝘉𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪 𝘛𝘰𝘬𝘺𝘰, è qui presentata una città fatta di scorci cupi e spesso umidi, dove l’architettura industriale fa da padrona con le sue luci e l’imponenza delle singole costruzioni. L’autore stesso, nella conclusione, afferma che il libro nasce in parte per risolvere una sorta di conflitto che aveva con la città, vista come un “brutto e possente gigante”; solo il mantello della notte gli ha permesso di vederne gli angoli più emozionanti e unici, qualcosa che valesse la pena ritrarre e mostrare. Si ha una bellezza diversa, da cercare tra la quotidianità di ogni giorno e i dettagli più minuti.
è una riflessione interessante, già proposta nel precedente volume e che è approfondita anche nel dialogo proposto tra Urbanowiczk e Makoto Shinkai, regista di 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘕𝘢𝘮𝘦, dove si possono oltretutto notare le differenze e i punti di contatto tra una visione più europea e una locale. Le parole che entrambi spendono sulla pioggia e il passato sono splendide, qualcosa che ho avvertito anche molto vicino a me e al mio modo di pensare.
Considerazioni più specifiche a parte, sono rimasta affascinata dalla bellezza delle tavole. Il lavoro e la cura messa per farle si avvertono tutte, tanto che è impossibile non esserne colpiti – e desiderare ancora una volta di prendere un biglietto aereo e partire subito alla volta di Tokyo per esplorarla da soli. La sezione dedicata alla pioggia è forse quella che mi ha colpita di più, ma nel complesso sono tutte splendide.
Ultimo ma non per importanza, la qualità del volume è sempre altissima. Tanti complimenti a L’ippocampo – anche se il formato diverso dal volume precedente non lo perdono, eh.

An hymn to Tokyo as a liminal space, a narration weaved from a city both fascinatingly alive and terrifyingly inhuman: Tokyo at Night is this and so much more, and it WILL make you feel nostalgic for this wonderful place even if you've never been there.
Worth noting (and praising) is also the fact that Urbanowicz shares many individual and technical over each and every illustration, allowing all the drawings to be much more easily understandable and accessible.

Le "Botteghe di Tokyo" mi é piaciuto di piú, fondamentalmente perché piú colorato (ovviamente) e perché c'erano piú disegni e meno "chiacchiere".

So lovely! In the Tokyo Storefront collection, Urbanowicz took the city down to the smaller scale, and you really felt the presence of the people who formed and occupied the stores. In a way, this book does the opposite and zooms out to look at the sometimes impersonal, slightly alien aspects of the city at large. Weirdly, even though neither book includes people, the first feels very much populated and this one feels empty to the point you feel more aware of yourself as the viewer/occupier.
The discussions about the technical aspects of creating these pieces and the challenges tackled in depicting dark night scenes in watercolor were super interesting, and I loved gaining insight on what he chose to alter and why.
I loved this collection just as much as the last one, and appreciated the ways in which they were different. So so so wonderful!

Massive disappointment, this book in no way lives up to its predecessor, Tokyo Storefronts. Where that book was full of delightful art, interesting commentary, and careful details, this book is has only mediocre paintings, masturbatory art commentary, and no fun details to speak of.
I liked basically every page of Tokyo Storefronts, but I struggled to find even 2 paintings that I liked in Tokyo at Night, both from the section on rain. Everything about this book is worse, all the way down to the mediocre dust jacket and soulless cover. This is the kind of book I would return if I had bought it on Amazon.

Sono ripetitiva ma sono totalmente innamorata degli acquerelli di Mateusz Urbanowicz 😍 anche questo volume è assolutamente meraviglioso, tutte le tavole creano delle atmosfere pazzesche! Come sempre apprezzo che parli del making of e del materiale che ha utilizzato, molto bella anche l'intervista alla fine con Makoto Shinkai, regista di "Your Name", con cui ha lavorato per i fondali!

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a stunning book of watercolor illustrations by one of my favorite artists. The tone and experience here is a huge contrast to the sunny nature of his first book “Tokyo Storefronts”. This one is more gritty and dark of course because they are night paintings but still absolutely beautiful and complex. You can see the effort the artist made to make every painting tell a story and leap off the page. I’m delighted to have this one on my bookshelf!

"I tried showing the atmosphere of the portrayed places in such a way that would make the readers feel like they were seeing them in person." - the author, p. 122.
That he succeeds with. It is an incredibly atmospheric book, which works hard at capturing an essence of the motif beyond just reproducing it. It is true to life (even though, and that is on purpose, no real tourist hotspots are included - well, the lotus pond at Ueno would probably count as that, but then again, not as a night motif), I recognized a couple of places and they felt better represented than a mere photo would have been able to succeed with (and I say that, loving photography).
The book includes an interview with Urbanowicz and a close-up description of the work progress.

This is a tough book to review, mostly because while the quality of the artwork was first rate and the subject (Tokyo/Japan) should have been right up my alley, I really didn't like it.
To me, it felt flat, random, and jumbled, with some pretty iffy subject/composition choices. Again, the artist is quite talented and the quality of the art itself is good, but what he chose to depict just didn't work for me for whatever reasons.
I don't feel that marking it down for my own tastes is fair, though, and I do think it's a high-quality art book, including the quality of the artwork, the quality of the print/book. I also really enjoyed the discussion at the end about his tools and techniques.

The City and the Night Sky
Trains and bridges, back alleys: surreal scenes of the modern Asian city come to life in a colorful play of shadows and light. As with the rainy scenes; the artist sees the city night in layers. He doesn't forget to take account for the natural world overhead that is yet visible in the 'concrete jungle' of modern urban spaces.
Mateusz paints these from street-level perspective; the natural eye level of the tourist. You feel like you are walking there through the narrow Japanese alleys; underneath the bright night sky of Tokyo. The scenes feature Japanese architecture of both the Showa era (1926-1989) and the Heisei era (1989-2019.) Some scenes are the everyday. Some scenes feature strange places with juxtaposed spaces. It is a collection I have been wanting since I enjoyed his first work in the set, Tokyo Storefronts. This dual-language artbook is printed in both Japanese and English on facing pages, in a lovely designed book format.

“Notti di Tokyo” è un’opera incantevole che mi ha permesso di immergermi in una visione notturna della capitale giapponese attraverso gli occhi di Mateusz Urbanowicz.
Sono rimasta incantata dalle sue tavole, un chiaro esempio di come l’arte possa dare nuova vita anche a ponti di metallo, vicoli apparentemente anonimi e addirittura cantieri e sottopassaggi bui. Il fatto che l’artista abbia realizzato i dipinti ad acquerello mi ha lasciato ancora più stupita di fronte alla qualità dei dettagli all’interno delle opere.
Inoltre, a mio parere, la parte finale è proprio la ciliegina sulla torta: l’intervista con Makoto Shinkai, che confronta l’arte dell’animazione con l’arte contenuta nel libro, mette in evidenza aspetti che il lettore amatoriale sicuramente non poteva coglie da sé. In particolare mi ha colpito la riflessione su come la pioggia possa aggiungere informazione alla scena, sia tramite il suono delle gocce, sia attraverso i riflessi che si creano su superfici altrimenti monotone e opache.
Anche la sezione conclusiva in cui l’autore parla direttamente al lettore mi è piaciuta molto: il racconto delle sue passeggiate e il riassunto di tutti gli step necessari alla creazione di una tavola aprono un interessante scorcio sul dietro le quinte dell’esecuzione dell’opera.

Rapisce.
Un cammino sospeso che conduce il lettore in posti reali ma al contempo magici.. un libro che si apprezza di più se letto con calma e durante le ore notturne per potersi immergere totalmente nella realtà e nelle sensazioni trasmesse in maniera così viva da questo incredibile artista.

Acquerelli splendidi. Le spiegazione sul perché è stato scelto un determinato scorcio e le tecniche per riprodurre colori e sfumature arricchiscono in maniera notevole i già stupendi disegni di Mateusz Urbanowicz.

Un altro piccolo capolavoro di questo fantastico artista.
Riesce a immergerti nelle atmosfere vibranti delle notti di Tokyo, con quel vibe nostalgico e triste delle notti illuminate dai neon.
Ho trovato anche molto interessante l'intervista tra l'artista e Makoto Shinkai!

Favourite illustrations were 10, 13, 14, 19, 22, 24, 25 (looks like something out of tekkonkinkreet), and 30. Also appreciated the little comments from Shinkai at the end explaining his consistent use of rain in his films.

Wow! These paintings are amazing! He really captures the mood and it is incredible how dark these are considering he is using mostly watercolor. Beautiful work!

The 2nd book in the series of the authors watercolor paintings of Tokyo. Book is in Japanese as well as English and highly recommended. The artwork is beautiful and its a great coffee table book. 5/5

it's beautiful, what can i say?
despite being a genius, i know next to nothing about art but believe homie achieved his goal of capturing tokyo beyond the obvious highlights and brought out something deeper
