Elaine Walker is a writer and consultant on the horse in cultural history. Her books include Horse (Reaktion), which was chosen for translation into Arabic by the Kalima Project. "To Amaze the People with Pleasure and Delight": The Horsemanship Manuals of William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle, (Xenophon) began life as her PhD thesis and she has given several presentations on Newcastle's method in his riding house at Bolsover Castle. She has worked on projects for the Royal Historic Palaces Commission, the Royal Armouries, English Heritage, and Royal Mail, among others.

بيحكي علاقة الحصان والانسان عبر الزمن.. :)

على عكس الإصدارات الأخرى لسلسلة الحيوانات وما تمتاز به من معلومات مثرية ، أجد إفتقار شديد في المعرفة وفوضى في المحتوى ، وهذا لم أجده عند قراءتي التاريخ الطبيعي والثقافي للبومة ، الحوت والحمام .

كان اجتهاد السيدة إلين دون المستوى المطلوب رغم سعيها النابع من شغفها ، ربما يرجع لتخصصها الأكاديمي الذي لا يمت بصلة في عالم الحيوان ، أرجو إصدار آخر مستفيض عن تاريخ ذلك الحيوان النبيل .

يرصد هذا الكتاب العلاقة المعقدة التي ربطت الإنسان بالحصان على مدى 6000 سنة، محاولا أن يجملها الكتاب في مئتي صفحة، بالكلمة والصورة... علاقة متشعبة يمكن اختصارها بقول الكاتب في نهاية كتابه:
(من دون الحصان، ما كان البشر ليكونوا مختلفين)

تتناول إلين ووكر التاريخ الطويل للحصان، هذا الكائن الجميل الذي رافق الإنسان عبر العصور ملبيًا احتياجاته التي تختلف حسب البيئة المحيطة وظروف الزمان والمكان.
افتتحت إلين أولى فصول هذا الكتاب بقول ميشيل دو مونتيتني:"عندما أمتطي صهوة الحصان فإنني لاأرغب في الترجل عنه أبدًا، لأنني سواءً كنت مريضًا أم مُعافى، أشعر بأنني أحسن حالًا في تلك الوضعية"

مُحبة الأحصنة إلين ووكر كاتبة مستقلة حاصلة على الدكتوراة في الأدب الإنجليزي تأخذ شكل الحكواتي في كتابها هذا لتروي تاريخ الأحصنة بشكل موجز وموثق بالصور منذ أن استخدمه الإنسان كغذاء ووسيلة للنقل والسفر عبر القارات إلى الترفيه وعروض البهلوان والفروسية كما يحدث اليوم.
تلقي إلين الضوء على دور الحصان كرمز في العديد من الثقافات والحضارات ودوره في حبكت الخرافات والأساطير كما هي صورة الحصان الأبيض المجنح بيغاسوس الذي عُرف في الميثولوجيا الإغريقية.
و بحسب نظريات داروين في أصل الأنواع "أن أكثر العلامات المميزة في الأجناس التي استأنسناها هي أننا نلحظ فيها القدرة على التكييف ليس بالضرورة لصالح الحيوان أو النبات بل لمنفعة الإنسان وأهوائه.
و هذا بالضبط ماحصل مع الحصان الذي نظم الإنسان عملية تزواجه منذ أربعة آلاف عام ليصبح ملائما لمتطلباته من رشاقة أو سرعة أو طول أو لون أو جلد مرقط على وجه التحديد!

أما في أزمنة الحروب وقبل ظهور التكنولوجيا فقد كان الحصان مفتاح النجاح في المعركة والأداة الأولى للركوب والسحب وجر العربات.
يرى البعض أن دور الأحصنة اليوم انتهى باعتبارها كائنات فائضة عن الحاجة وهذا ما أكده برنامج وثائقي عام 1972 بعنوان"من يحتاج الأحصنة؟".
إلاّ أن ووكر تذكرنا في سطورها الأخيرة أن الحصان هو معلم الإنسان الأول الذي علمه كيف يكون قائد جيّد ومتكيف ماهر مع الطبيعة.

من الجدير بالذكر أن الكتاب تضمن مائة وثلاثة وثلاثون رسمًا توضيحيًا وعشرات المراجع.

Not quite as smart, well-written, or interesting as other books I've read in the Reaktion Books single-species series (e.g., RHINOCEROS, SNAKE, FALCON, RAT)and too much information about the author's Appaloosa fixation, but still useful, and well worth buying for the beautiful illustrations alone. This whole series, distributed in the U.S. by the University of Chicago Press, is really great--wonderfully well produced, fine authors for the most part, and, overall, fascinating. There are thirty-odd books in the series, and I plan to collect them all.

The Animal series is very much like Reaktion's Edible series. Each book is a brief (150-200 pages) overview of the title animal, from biology to historical interactions with humans. For some animals, that might be fine. But for an animal like the horse, it's necessarily barely adequate. The book itself is well-written, and nicely illustrated, but it's simply not enough. If you want anything more than the barest of overviews, you'll need to find another book to supplement it.

This book was an interesting journey through the history of horses all over the world, with occasional digressions into art, literature, and of course culture. Clearly such as small book could only cover a small part of this extensive history, but the author has crafted a thought provoking read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

مذهل!
ذاك الحصان المرقط، يعدو في الغابات الواسعة، إلى الحصان كما نتعارف عليه اليوم. تاريخ طويل عريض، يستعرض العلاقة بين الإنسان والحصان،
"عندما ننظر إلى الحصان فإن ما نراه يعتمد كلياً على فهمنا الخاص للعالم، والمتغير باستمرار"
أحببت الكتاب جداً، طريقة عرض و سلاسة المعلومة ثم الصور الجزء المفضل لدي،
وهو كما قال رسول الله:
"الخيل معقود في نواصيها الخير إلى يوم القيامة"
