The mage magic that saved them could also be their undoing.
Theon and his men escaped House Natas, only to face suspicion and unrest from the Shifter Resistance. Shifters don’t trust mages, even ones who freed an entire House from their bonds.
As tensions rise, Theon’s tenuous control on his magic slips further, until one outburst leads to an amount of damage Theon can’t bear. He must learn to control his magic before someone else he loves is harmed or the fire growing inside him burns him alive.
Luckily, Florin knows where to go. Unfortunately, going to learn control means leaving some of his men behind.
They may survive the battle of Tisak, but can their love survive mage fire and the difficult choices in their path?
The horrors of House Natas may be behind them, but the fight of their lives still lies ahead.
Tisak is the second novel in the Kingdoms of Pelas series featuring a scrawny mage, a towering half-orc, a beautiful tiger, a tiny human, and a fierce gargoyle. As well as plenty of surprises along the way. Equal parts unflinching brutality and robust love story, this book isn’t for the faint of heart. Our characters' journey is meant to be read in order and will continue through the Kingdoms of Pelas series. Tisak features a why choose/poly relationship and has a HFN ending. Ah, another one worth the five stars. It took forever for us to get the second book, to the point where I despaired over us getting it at all, but it is here. And it is amazing. Worth waiting the literal years it took to come to us. And while the dynamics change, I love that each individual character can have its own dynamic with each member of the group. And they all get their own character arcs! It gives it something special. It feels like five people with interconnected relationships, and not like a harem like some poly books can. Did I say I love it, because it bears saying again. And I hope the next one isn't as far off. Because we need to know!
I've been waiting a long time for TISAK so it was great to be back with Theon, Braz, Nica, Weylyn, and Florin and while they have some angsty moments in this one, their love is just as pure and strong as before. I loved seeing Theon come into his own, find his powers, and gain confidence in his ability to fight back against the mages that have enslaved so many people. I also adored seeing the softer side of Weylyn and how he really stepped in for Nica when he was hurting. There was more relationship drama than I was expecting and I personally wasn't a fan of the long separation for the group but I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next in book 3.

"You’re strong, but you’re allowed to break every now and then. You were my strength when I needed you, and now, I get to be yours."
This is not how a relationship is supposed to work. I was very disappointed, especially after the strong start of the book and the emotional developments all the characters went through. But I can't stand all this betrayal, especially when there are no repercussions.
A good second book in the Pelas series. I loved the dynamics between the main characters. My only complaint is that the group was split up for a chunk of the book. All in all, an enjoyable read.
People will go to great lengths to protect the ones they love. Whether that be protecting them from someone else’s harm, or even their own. And when you have multiple lovers, things can get a bit complicated. This month I am reviewing Tisak by Michelle Frost and Michele Notaro.
Tisak is the second book in the Kingdoms of Pelas series. A sequel to Zyon, which I read last year, it features the same main cast. We have Theon, a young man who only just realized he is a mage, Weylyn, a grumpy gargoyle, Nica, a playful tiger shifter, and Braz, an also-grumpy half-orc. Joining the four of them in both the main cast and their extended romantic relationship is Florin, the personal bed-slave of their former master.
The book picks up not long after the events of Zyon, with our group of men fleeing after their escape from House Natas. On the run and still traumatized from their time as slaves, the men are desperately clinging to each other for reassurance as they navigate their new world together.
Each chapter is told from one of the men's perspectives, switching between all five. As someone who prefers writing characters in first person myself, I liked getting to hear everyone's internal thoughts as the story progressed. That said, with five different characters I did feel it could sometimes be a little difficult for them to stand out from each other.
If it wasn't obvious, this book features a polyamorous romance between the main five characters. This isn't just a free for all, each of the men have specific relationships with each other, complete with pet names. And with a new member joining the family, we get to see how things develop between him and each of the other’s, much like what happened with Theon in the previous book. Additionally, this book’s spicy scenes are spicier than what I remembered from Zyon.
With such a large main cast, there are still plenty of side characters to meet. Sephiran, a slave who fled with our group, Kasper, the leader of the resistance and a fellow gargoyle they come across, and Jedrick, Florin’s mysterious cousin. Each of these characters serves to better flesh out the world of the books. The worldbuilding has been turned up a notch since the first book, our characters no longer confined to a single location.
Not to go into any spoilers, but I did feel the book meandered a bit before I was able to figure out the direction the plot was taking me. We have a lot of characters to focus on, each with their own goals and needs, but at times it felt like it lacked an overarching larger goal that everyone was working to. Still, I did enjoy some of the detours the story took.
This was a good read! With the three muscular monsters and the two boys they'd do anything to protect, this book will definitely scratch that monster-lover romantasy itch you might be trying to take care of. A third book has not officially been announced yet, but I am certainly interested in continuing the story of this family of fighters.

It's been a long time coming, and Tisak absolutely lived up to my expectations and then some. After escaping House Natos with little more than the clothes on their backs, Theon, Weylen, Florin, Nica, and Braz were poised for the next step of their adventure. As uncertain as their path was, seeing all of them free and openly affectionate with each other was amazing, and I was eager to find out what would happen when they met up with the Resistance. Their family had a lot of healing to do, but with a safe place to rest and allies at their back, a future of freedom and love seemed within grasp for one of the first times. Of course, that's when Theon's magical outbursts took an unexpectedly dangerous turn, and nothing could have prepared me for how serious it got before Florin took matters into his own hands. The middle section of this story was incredibly difficult emotionally, but because I don't want to spoil the storyline for anyone I can't really talk about why. The choices these men made strained their relationship in ways that shook their very foundations, and as much as I didn't see another way out in the moment, it hurt to see how much some of them struggled in the aftermath. But as much as my heart was breaking for the pain these men were going through, there was also hope on the horizon. Theon did learn to control his magic, Weylen took back a huge part of his identity for himself, Florin practically transformed into a more assured, confident version of himself, and Braz and Nica both engaged in deep self-reflection that helped them understand themselves better. Even as some of their bonds strained, others grew even more rock-solid, and I never once doubted how deeply and unconditionally these men all loved one another. While the main relationship conflicts did end up resolved in this book, Florin, Nica, Braz, Theon, and Weylen still need more time to fully learn how to trust each other again after what they went through. And all the while, the Resistance movement continued on, taking out corrupt mages and going on missions to power up before their next big strike to free as many slaves as possible. I thought the Resistance storyline ended on a serious high, with a huge victory under their belts and a chance to rest up before planning their next venture, and that's the only reason I'm not going to go crazy waiting to see what life throws at my favorite champions next.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
This book picks up immediately after the events of the first, in which our heroes are fleeing their life of slavery and searching for the “Resistance.” While not everything is perfection, the opening third of this story features plenty of good moments of physical and emotional healing while the characters experience something close to safety for the first time in years. However, the revelation of Theon’s magical ability invites plenty of opportunity for conflict both within this family and with external influences.
Though Theon is the character that links everyone in this family together, the various bonds between others in his “harem” are given equal weight and importance. I also appreciate that not all of those bonds are purely physical, but instead emphasize elements of friendship and found family. Though I was unsurprised that the long-term happiness of this family is threatened by Theon’s inability to control his powers, his (and Florin’s) reaction to this problem verges into “too stupid to live” territory. Luckily, Braz was currently in possession of the collective brain cell, otherwise this might have been a much darker story. The best intentions don’t always translate to good ideas, but change brings growth, and I wasn’t mad about the resulting relationship development that occurred between the Weylyn/Nica and Braz/Florin pairings along the way.
The poignant aftermath of Theon’s decision did fulfill all my expectations, fortunately, but in the process, I fear that Theon made some promises he might not be able to keep. The grand finale of this particular installment of the series was almost anticlimactic in that regard, but the events do set up the promise of epic adventure and conflict for the final act. Since I’m currently unclear how the Resistance plans to operate or rule once they achieve their endgame of ending slavery, I foresee plenty of opportunity for this wonderfully unique found family to face external threats while also encountering strife that forces the characters and relationships to grow even further.
Tisak is the second book in the Kingdom of Pelas and should be read in order.
An emotional, heartwarming romance filled with the kind of angst that has you holding your breath, protecting your heart, and begging for more!
I was soooo excited to read Tisak after absolutely loving Zyon (one of my favourite books) two years ago when it was released. It was so nice to catch up with Theon, Braz, Nica, Weylyn and Florin. I loved them, I adored them, and I was sucked right into their life and didn't want to leave!!
Tisak picks up right where the last book finished and with Theon and his men we are back in a world filled with danger. We learn some interesting information, meet a few new side characters, have our hearts broken but most of all witness the love, loyalty and devotion between these men who have battled their way in our hearts and refuse to leave.
This story had me on my toes from the first chapter all the way to the last sentence .... Read it you will NOT regret it.
This book contains triggering content such as graphic violence, death, bigotry, mentions off-page sexual assault, refers to previous enslavement/ current enslavement for others and previous abuse.

**4.5** A fantastic continuation of the Pelas series. The relationship between our five MC's becomes more complicated and they join the Shifter Resistance, hoping to help and continue the fight. Theon, Weylyn, Nica, Braz and Florin escaped the House of Zyon after Theon's mage ability kicked in, giving them the chance to fight back and escape. Now, joining the Resistance would mean helping others and putting Weylyn, Nica and Braz's champion fighting skills to use. They'd also like to use Theon's mage powers but he is struggling to contain them having had no training or knowledge passed on. One incident leaves him running and Florin and Braz lead him to those who they hope will pass on everything he needs to become a powerful fighter but he's not the only one learning something new. Unfortunately, Weylyn and Nica are left behind and tensions rise, strong emotions bringing them closer together but possibly further apart from the others. With five MC's, all of whom are different species, things are bound to get complicated but I love how they all interact and not all of them are loving on each other. It's more of a two and a three with a crossover for Theon. Bonds do develop and strengthen but things also become tense when they're all reunited and Nica pulled on the heartstrings, finally sharing with Theon what he'd done to their group. The story line of the book holds strong throughout and the characters and their relationships made me feel engaged with everything that goes on, the good and the bad. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Shifter Resistance moves forward and how all of the characters play their roles in that. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
I liked this book a lot more than the previous one, which didn't really have much of an emotional connection for me. As in, lots of spice, not a lot of heart. But my favorite character is still Nica. For all that Theon is the center of the relationships, it still feels like Nica is the heart who constantly takes a beating but comes through it. He's more forgiving than I am, but I appreciate that for him, love can still be there alongside anger and hurt.
These authors both have many great books written so it’s not a surprise that this series is so well done. The world building just increases in this volume as the guys have to travel to find the Shifter Resistance and Theon feels like he has to go away and learn how to control his power better. I love the way the struggles and danger they go through are interspersed with relationship stuff and not always with all five guys together but individual couples and groups within the five man group (don’t know what you call a relationship of five people together? Busy? Lol) I used to read a lot of fantasy books when I was younger that never had much romance in them but I enjoy this type where love is part of the story partly because people generally keep feeling things even when action, danger, conflict, etc is going on around them. It’s also because I like knowing that there is going to be some type of happy ending even if it’s just happy for now which is what we get in this book. There are big hints in this book about what might be happening in the future volumes and I look forward to reading what does happen next.
We pick up where we left our family of five, working their way through the forest in search of the Resistance now they are free. Don't worry, they find them rather quickly. But as you would imagine, Braz and Theon aren't as welcome in the camp. Which causes a lot of tension.
But it's what happens after a raid on a mage caravan that really ignites the strife and angst in this story. Our little family gets pulled apart, and it's really hard to watch. Especially seeing it from both sides. But fear not, there is a reunion, and there is a plan for the Resistance to take a big step. So if you liked the last story, we get to see more of who each person in our MC group are, we get more great battle scenes, you get some really good emotional angst, and you get to see the growth of Theon and Florin. Yes, it's time for Florin's secrets to be revealed as well. I would say the series could end here, you have a good HEA, but the end promises a book three. So I hope to see Theon confront his brother.
“With these men beside me, we could face anything.” Angst, angst, who has the angst? This book for sure and Theon. Whoo, did I want to shake that mage something fierce during this book. But through it all, and there are many sweet and squishy ups and heart-rending lows, the one truth that shines through is that these men love each other, and I adore how multi-faceted that love is becoming, and together can accomplish anything.
It tickles me to watch these five men find their way together and form special bonds. I adore each of them in their own ways, but I must admit that some of these characters, and I won’t say who, have carved a permanent place in my heart, and I will never let them go. Be prepared to face all the emotions in this amazing continuation, and possibly some you didn’t even know you had, but know with one-hundred percent surety that you will fall deeper in love with these men along their incredible journey.
Tisak is a solid follow up to Zyon, and I look forward to reading the next in series!
The blurb is pretty accurate, so I won’t go into much plot summary. But in short, if you liked Zyon then you’ll enjoy getting back into the thick of things and picking up right where it left off – with a clear path for future installments as our heroes work to rid the world of slavery.
We’ve got character development, relationship development, world building (I always appreciate when there’s more to uncover in sequels!), action from the resistance forces, and some steamy times.
We gain insight into the background of some of the characters, particularly Florin, as we learn about his heritage while he follows his instincts to help Theon control his magic.
I really enjoy the multiple POVs, but one thing I did feel like I was missing was a bit more of Theon.
Theon, Braz, Weylyn, Nica, and Florin story continues with more danger, harder challenges that leads to hard decisions, separation, despair, secrets that change the balance, hard won achievements, redemption, forgiveness and lots of love. The adrenaline is higher and higher as the missions becomes more dangerous and the bad surprises leads to actions that causes hurt and protectiveness that leads to bad decisions. Trust is broken and amends need to be made as well as assurance. It was beautiful to see how they evolves, embrace new sides of them and become more careful and thoughtful about their feelings before taking a decision. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to see what happens next with our beloved characters.
The second book in the Kingdom of Pelas series is as riveting as the first. The authors continue building their world, which is a brutal and beautiful place. Theon and his family/lovers are separated during a good portion of this book. Theon, Florin and Braz leave the Resistance camp to find someone who can teach Theon to control his magic. After he almost killed Nica in an uncontrolled burst of fire. Nica and Weylyn begin to doubt the mage's love for them with Nica falling into a listless depression. Notaro and Frost like to torture their MCs, so the extreme angst that Nica experiences isn't a surprise. Excellent writing, multiple POVs. Great secondary characters. Book three will come out in about a million dog years I'm sure. Can't wait.
Picking up where Zyon left off, Tisak brings us to Theon and his men joining the resistance. While there is overarching plot moving the overall story forward, the underlying theme really focuses on development of the individual characters and the dyad/triad relationships. The characters ultimately end up split (no spoilers) for a chunk of the book so we really end of focusing on Nica and Wey, and then Theon, Braz, and Fioren, ultimately coming back to their polyamorous group. Tisak brings more spice, more action, and a deeper appreciation for our characters. It’s a HFN but doesn’t end on a cliffhanger. Definitely read Zyon first otherwise it will be a struggle to know what is happening. And then basically strap in and enjoy the ride by an amazing PNL writing duo.
absolutely loved book two of Kingdoms of Pelas. It picks up where book one left off and leaves us at a comfortable place, if not highly anxious for more! This series is my first of Michelle Frost's books and I will definitely be reading more.
This is a paranormal fantasy, so expect lots of different types of characters from shifters to orcs to fae. I love the gladiator/slave dynamic and where it goes in book two.
I've seen this described as harem, but it's really poly. The poly aspect is done so well with many POVs, all bringing different dynamics of love, sexy times, and friendships. I adore where this is going.
I was on the edge of my seat for a good portion of this! I can't wait for the next one!
Such great story telling, and a direct continuation from Zyon. A lot more action and adventure in this book. We are introduced to many new characters, while the originals still hold a special place in our hearts, I personally hope for some more of the others to find their love interest. I had to take one star away for the ending. I feel like it was rushed, and could have been written so much better by either of the authors. I honestly felt like the Big Battle would start the next book, instead in like 2 chapters it was all wrapped up. I loved the story, and the characters, I just wasn't happy with the end. That certainly isn't going to stop me from reading the next one!
I have been waiting a while for this next book! I love reading about poly relationships and I am so pleased this is a series of books. There is the perfect balance of fantasy world building with danger and adventure plot along with getting to really know all of the guys in depth. The journey is tough and there is actually quite a bit of tension and angst in this installment. I appreciate how none of these guys is perfect, but they are all finding their place in the family they are building together. Each has very evident strengths and weaknesses. I hope the next installment is soon!
I’ve been looking forward to reading this book and it didn’t disappoint.
This was an emotional instalment. How far would you go to protect those you love? Poor Theon shattered his own heart to protect his men but will they understand or will it be the end for them?
Theon and Florin have come along way. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for these amazing men.
*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*
Whew! At first it looked like things might settle down for a bit for our guys and they do briefly only for their relationships to be strained almost beyond the breaking point by Theon's lack of control over his magic. The story of the resistance is blended here with a focus on the emotional development of the characters which clearly will make them able to withstand the trials that are to follow in the series. Bonds forged in fire, literally and figuratively.
Theon is such a lucky little human mage ;) His tiger shifter, his half Orc, his fae, and his gargoyle all love him. They are working to end slavery for shifters and humans.
In this book, Florin, Theon and Braz are on their own for a bit. It's kind of nice to have more Braz and Florin time.
I enjoy the over arching story. I love the characters. Looking forward to the next book.
This book was amazing!!! I highly recommend this series. This book may have been even better than the first one. In this one there is a lot more character development we get to see a new side to florin and Braz as their relationship deepens as well as Nica and Wey. Theon, Braz, and florin are separated from Nica and Wey leading to very interesting dynamics. If you havent read this series go ahead and pick up book 1 and 2 you wont regret it.
This series is not an easy read but it is so good. Theon and his lovers are now with the Resistance, trying to stop the way the kings and lords hold entire lands hostage. Their world is brutal but beautiful at the same time. These five love each other so much. They all have some hard choices to make but no one can keep them apart for long. Don’t read this one if you haven’t read book one, Zyon, yet.
I loved the closeness between Theon and his men and how they were able to more freely express their feelings after the horrors of the House of Natas. I highly recommend that you read this book but urge you to read the first book before you read this one so you can truly see for yourselves what they are fighting against.
A fantastic addition to the series. This was a rollercoaster ride of separation anxiety and angst but I enjoyed watching everyone find their spot in this wonderful dynamic group. I am loving the series so far and I can't wait to see the next part of their journey.
*I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the GRR team*
Wow! This is such an amazing series and I am LOVING book two! It's so good! M. Frost and M. Nataro of course spin such an amazing tale it's hard to put their books down! I can't wait for book three! Fingers crossed for a short wait between books! I read an advanced copy of this book and this is my unbiased review!
