Much better than the first novel. Loved it, and made me shed a couple of tears.

- Bon conseil pour une source thermale;
- Le petit secret de Mitsuri Kanroji;
- Les conséquences du rêve;
- À toi qui ne rigole plus;

“i……love shinobu the most.” ... “so please stop pretending, i love the original kanroji-san the most.”

actual rating 3.5*

i read the english translation, but only the thai version of kimetsu no yaiba's second light novel is on gr so. i read the first four chapters weeks ago so i don't remember them well. i'm only slogging my way through this because having six books on my currently reading shelf is driving me crazy. genya, sanemi, mitsuri, shinobu, tanjiro, and giyuu COLLAPSE. the scenes in chapter three of iguro and shinobu caring about mitsuri.... naho being comfortable with genya after he tells her about sanemi.... everyone coming together in the arm wrestling match for giyuu's sake AHHHHH

ch 1: one winged butterfly: 4 stars
ch 2: the right way to recommend a hotspring: 2 stars
ch 3: kanroji mitsuri's secret: 5 stars ♡
ch 4: after waking up from a dream: 5 stars ♡
ch 5: for you who does not smile: 4 stars
ch 6: kimetsu academy tales - paradise lost: 1 stars

This is another fun, heartwarming addition to the main series!

In this collection, we get to see more of Kanae and Shinobu’s backstory as well as getting to see a glimpse into the fraught relationship between the Shinazugawa brothers. Since these are secondary characters in the main series, it’s nice to spend some time with them here.

I really love that Sanemi is actually a big softie, especially about his little brother.

Anyway.

Definitely recommend for fans of the main series~

I read the English translation. The English title of this one (according to wiki) is "Demon Slayer: One-Winged Butterfly". The original title (Japanese) is "Kimetsu no Yaiba: Katahane no Chou".

This is the second light novel of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba. I finished reading the third one before this and the first. I'm definitely gonna finish the first one within several days ahead.

Like the title, the main characters of this light novel are the butterfly sisters, Kochou Kanae and Shinobu. The first chapter of this light novel focuses on their story before they became Demon Slayers.

However, like the other light novels, this book also contains other stories about other characters, although Kanae and Shinobu's story is the focus.

It has been ages since the last time I read Japanese light novels. Reading this, I feel like reading fanfiction but canon, and it makes me so happy since I'm currently (and forever will be) in love with this series. The stories here are faithful to the events in the manga--I still remembered the manga's scenes well since I just finished reading all those 205 chapters of the manga several days prior. These stories dig much deeper though, with its narration and description. Novels and mangas have different styles of storytelling, right?

There are six stories in this light novel:

1. One-Winged Butterfly - the story of Kanae and Shinobu after they were saved by Himejima Gyomei from the demons who killed their parents. This is a sad story about the sisters, their strong bond, their determination, and the fate they embraced. We got a closer look about their relationship here, and how Kochou Kanae as a kind person she was.

2. The Right Way to Recommend a Hot Spring - this story takes place within the Pillar's Training Arc. Uzui had Zenitsu go around the mountain to search and dig a spring by giving him "insight" about how he would make the spring as a mixed bath. Zenitsu, tempted by the thought of seeing Uzui's wives naked (yeah I know, Zenitsu is kinda pervert isn't he), spending hours to dig that spring with Inosuke's help. Of course it's not that Inosuke helped him voluntarily; Zenitsu just tricked him. Anyway this is a light and fun (but kinda annoying) story and ends heartwarming when we found out what Uzui's real purpose to give Zenitsu such task.

3. Kanroji Mitsuri's Secret - this is a veeeeery wholesome story about the Love Pillar, Kanroji Mitsuri. :') She was acting strange because something bothered her. Overthinking as she was, she lost concentration and messed up many activities, even injured herself in a battle with a demon. This unusual behavior catched the eye of Iguro, the Snake Pillar, who we all know was head over heels for her. Iguro asked Shinobu, the only other female Pillar, to find out the reason of Mitsuri's change. I love, love, love this story so much, it's so full of hearts and make my own heart flutter. Not to mention that it left a big smile on my face after reading, and I have to admit that I re-read it several times.

4. After Waking Up from a Dream - the story about Shinazugawa Genya and his complex feelings towards his brother, Sanemi. He finally opened up to Sumi, one of the butterfly girls, whose name resembled his deceased younger sister's. This is such a heartwarming story, with a long pain afterwards (if you have read the manga, you should know what I'm talking about).

5. For You Who Does Not Smile - this is a Pillar-centered story so I think everyone will love this. It tells about the Pillars who competed to make Tomioka Giyuu smile as the implication of misinterpreting Oyagata-sama's wish. I know the premise sounds so absurd--how come the Pillars, most elite swordsman in Demon Slayer Corps, spending time to do something as trivial as making Tomioka smile (not to mention most of them hate Tomioka)--but the story itself is not absurd at all. It is as funny as you think it will be, even more. I laughed so hard when reading it, totally can imagine the story as manga panels or anime scenes. I also re-read this one several times.

6. Kimetsu Academy Tales: Paradise Lost - in the light novels, there's always a chapter that sets in Kimetsu Academy, a middle/high school where our characters go to as students or teachers. This story tells about how the cultural festival's student executive comittees, consists of Shinobu-Aoi-Kanao-Senjurou, trying to thwart Modern Scruffy Democracy--a highly destructive band consists of Uzui, Tanjirou, Zenitsu, and Inosuke--to perform at the culture festival so that they can minimize the casualties. The band was so messed up that everyone who listened to their songs would get dizzy, throw up, and have to get medical aid. This is also a funny story, so comical with a perfect ending.

***

I enjoyed this light novel so much. The characters are so in-character. I can imagine the scenes in this light novel as a manga/anime visual in my head. I also love Yajima-sensei's writing. Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba is a manga series that full of heart, and this light novel also handles the story that way. This light novel is different media from the manga or anime, but it doesn't lose the "heart" that Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba has in its core story. It's so well-written, thoughtful, and presenting the deeper exploration of the characters without ruining them at all. This light novel completes the manga series in the most beautiful way.

There are some weak stories and not sure if its the translators fault because there are few instances where it should've been Hashira meeting but it was hasira training instead. Sanemi, Genya, Shinobu's story were the best.

Book Review
Title: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba One-Winged Butterfly by Koyoharu Gotouge & Aya Yajima
Genre: Manga, Fantasy
Rating: 4.5 Stars
This is short story collection set in the world of Demon Slayer that answers some questions left unanswered by the main series or just fills in more of the backstories of the characters we came to love. The first story in this collection is One-Winged Butterfly and it is the story of how Kanae and Shinobu became demon slayers. We know in the manga that there parents were killed by demons and they were saved by Gyomei who at the time was dealing with a lot of his own grief still. Afterwards the girls come to thank him and ask for him to train them in become demon slayers, at first he refuses because he doesn’t want to get attached to them but after doing just that he gives them a test. If they can move a boulder in his garden before he returns from his mission then he will introduce them to trainers but they will be going to different ones since Gyomei knows even at this point Shinobu will never be strong enough to cut off a demon’s head.
Despite being a lot smaller and physical weaker than Gyomei , the girls put their heads together and use a lever to move the boulder and Gyomei follows through on his promise. We then jump forward to just before the main story takes place and see the change in Shinobu after the death of her sister through Gyomei’s eyes and he feels like he lost them all over again and can’t bring himself to say anything about because he knows nothing will take that grief away.
The second story Correct Onsen Recommendation is set during the Pillar training when the younger demon slayers are training under Tengen. This training is really hard especially for the cowardly Zenitsu but Tengen want to make him stronger. Tengen eventually uses Zenitsu’s weakness to women against him by asking him to dig out an onsen for his wives. Zenitsu doesn’t want to do it but when Tengen mentions mixed bathing his attitude completely changes. Tanjiro has already moved on to the next Pillar while Inosuke and Zenitsu are still with Tengen. He enlists Inosuke’s help in finding the onsen by telling him bathing in it will make him stronger.
They eventually manage to find it just before nightfall and the pair are found a short time later by Tengen and his wives. However, when Inosuke learns Zenitsu lied to him, a chase begins that ends with Zenitsu passing out. While the wives and Inosuke take their turns in the onsen, Hinatsuru looks after Zenitsu and sees a wonderful potential trainer and father in Tengen even if he doesn’t see it himself.
The third story, Mitsuri Kanroji’s Secret was obviously Mitsuri’s story and it takes place entirely during a flashback Mitsuri has when Tanjirou asks her why she joined the demon slayer corps in the swordsmith village arc. In this flashback she is telling Shinobu why she joined the corps, later she learns of Shinobu’s past and her reason for becoming a demon slayer which leaves Mitsuri feeling incredibly embarrassed. Mitsuri wants to fit in with the other Pillars since she is pretty new and decides to hide her carefree, almost childish behaviour from them which eventually leads to a decline in her health and ability to fight.
Unsurprisingly it is Obanai who notices first and ropes Shinbou into finding out why Mitsuri is acting strange. When Shinobu literally sneak attacks Mitsuri and makes her explains why she is acting this way, Shinobu reassures her. She explains that while many of them have pasts that aren’t good which lead to them becoming demon slayers, it is people like Mitsuri who joined for the companionship that the corps offers and those that join to help others that keep the other Pillars going and urges Mitsuri to not hide who she is and not to change herself either as they love her for who she is.
The fourth story, A Dream in the Moment is Genya’s story and it was heart-breaking. After the fight with Hantengu and Gyokko while Genya is recovering at the Butterfly Mansion he has several dreams about when he and Sanemi were children before the death of their mother. These dreams make Genya realises how much he wronged his brother at the time and wants to make things right but doesn’t think he will ever get the chance. To my surprise, it is Sumi, one of the young girls living with Shinobu that helps Genya out of his depression and helps him find a way forward. While he hasn’t made things right with Sanemi at this point it doesn’t stop him from making new friends and relying on them like he does with Tanjirou and Muiichirou.
The fifth story, To An Unsmiling You was a fun little story told by Giyuu to Tanjirou during the Pillar training. Giyuu explains that Sanemi has always disliked him and the story is essentially all the other Pillars trying to make him smile in various ways and failing. When it is Sanemi’s turn, Shinobu tells Sanemi to ask Giyuu if he wants Salmon stewed with daikon (Japanese radish) which is his favourite and when he turns Sanemi down because he has already eaten, Sanemi explodes. While Giyuu still doesn’t understand to this day why Sanemi was angry with him, Tanjirou does and explains hoping to foster a friendship between Giyuu and Sanemi since at this point in the series, Giyuu has finally accepted his place among the Pillars.
The final story takes place in the world of Kimetsu Academy which is a short strip done in some Demon Slayer volumes where Gotouge writes the characters in modern day high school and while it was funny it was my least favourite of the collection since it didn’t add anything to the original series really. Overall, it was some nice insight into the characters we didn’t get to spend much time with and if you like the Demon Slayer manga or anime then definitely check it out.

I am actually surprised and it pains me to actually say that I enjoyed this second novel more than the first one?!!! I say it because from all the stories in the novels so far, I think my favorite is still the Flower of Happiness because I am nezutan trash lol.

Thus, it was so surprising to find how enjoyable these stories were. Granted, the other stories in the first novel were not bad by any means, no. It's just that it waa focused a bit on other characters like the Pillars who I don't particularly care for, tbh.

Yet, despite the focus on them in this novel as well. I actually had feels and had me smiling and laughing throughout the novel!!

Okay, so first off the first story with Shinobu, her sister and Gyomei. Again, don't particular care for the Pillars, but I can still appreciate blood sibling bonds because I'm a sap for blood family; anyways reading this story it gave me the feels just seeing their past, Gyomei telling himself he will not regret his decisions in helping them become Slayers and just knowing what ultimately changes and how Shinobu herself had to change to deal with her sister's death. Urgh, yeah I did not ask for these feels! Lol

The one with Zenitsu was probably my least favorite story despite him and Inosuke being my more top likeable characters. I'm sorry, but Zenitsu's perviness I can never like. And this is also part of why I can never ship him with Nezuko. Just eeew no. Still, not a bad story.

The same is true with Mitsuri. I also don't particularly care for her as with all the Pillars except Giyu (reasons that I will not list here). It wasn't bad and I had the feels for Mitsuri too, though, ofc, not on the same level as blood family feels. But it was nice seeing her grappling and coming to terms with her reasons for becoming a slayer and also seeing how these issues began to affect her overall health and well being.

Again as with the Pillars also don't particularly care for Genya and his brother, but ofc, I could appreciate the sibling bonds and surprising feels this brought me. Just the novels are very well written so they do a good job in potraying the emotions and struggles of the characters. Not to say the manga doesn't do a good job in doing this, but this novel was quite fun.

With the 5th story akakkamamma Okay, that with how the Pillars view and misunderstand Giyu is one of the reasons I can't particularly care for them or like them. I mean they only wanted to make Giyu "smile" due to Ubuyashiki not because they particularly care for Giyu himself. So like yeah, no, that just doesn't sit well with me despite how funny everyone's antics and reactions were. Like with characters such as Mitsuri and maybe Rengoku it can be argued that they do care for him as a fellow Pillar, but still it comes off as a little bit superficial or like they don't try hard enough. Idk how to explain it properly.

Anyway, the last story. First off hated that Kanoe/Tanjiro stuff going on. No just no. Notp. I'm sorry, but all the canon pairings feel forced. But again anyway, it was hilarious. I just don't really know what else to say. I feel bad for Tanjiro cause he's so honest and earnest and hardworking, but my poor boy is so tone deaf. Lol

Overall, I have no idea what this review is. I feel like it's all over the place, but I did enjoy this novel. I really did. It gave me the feels, made me smile and laugh despite my own personal feelings and gripes with some of the characters. Lol.

I really look forward to the next novel being released in June and hope that the new books being released in Japan get an official English release!!

For now, will wait eagerly for the art book to be released in English and for the 3rd season in June!!

(not finished just writing review as I go)
Chapter 1
I wasn't that interested to read the story about Himejima and the Kocho sisters (chapter 1) at first, but I actually quite enjoyed their story and finished it in one sitting. I think it added a lot to their characters, especially with Himejima. Himejima is described very highly by other characters in the show, so it felt more authentic to be in his perspective (particularly in a timeframe closer to his backstory) and see more of his flaws, with him suppressing his emotions and viewing women and children almost condescendingly, but not so much in a way that ruins his character. In fact, I think it gave him more depth.
Not only that, but seeing Shinobu and Kanae's story from his perspective helped shine a light on who they are as characters too. Especially at the end, when he talks about Shinobu and her smile (which is referencing the way she adopted Kanae's personality) and implies that she will have the same fate as her sister, but she is okay with that, and he cannot stop her. Despite this, or perhaps in light of this, he has deep respect for both Kanae and Shinobu, and this helps to wrap up all of their characters quite well.

Chapter 2
Finished this over the course of two days. I was really excited to read this one because I love zenitsu, inosuke, and uzui, and I wanted to see more of zenitsu and uzui’s dynamic. Honestly, I think it’s there, but it kind of feels like something not super important to the writers. But whatever, it’s important to me! One thing I didn’t like was that they focused on freaky zenitsu, and why uzui would suggest that all? 😭 why would he suggest his wives. They never really cleared up that he was doing it to get zenitsu stronger or if he ordered him just so that he could have a hot spring. Either way, it’s strange, because in the end, tengen didn’t have to worry about zenitsu getting in the hot spring because he fainted and hit his head on a rock out of fear 😭, but it’s not like uzui was planning for that to happen?? So I think that was just a bit unclear which I didn’t like.
There was some really cute passages, like the interaction between zenitsu and inosuke was really cute and nice to see, because usually, the show and manga focuses more on their relationships with tanjiro or nezuko, so I love to see their interactions sm!! And I like hinatsuru’s POV at the end. For the most part, there were certain parts I just really didn’t like, but then there were parts I really did! So I would reread this chapter for sure, but there are things I wish were resolved or improved.

Chapter 3
I found it funny (and fun) the way shinobu and iguro interact. We never see that in the show, so the first scene with them here is endearing.. in a way haha. They have a sibling like dynamic, where it seems like shinobu is almost willing to let her calm smiley persona drop and tease him sometimes, like for his crush on mitsuri.
Also extra extra bonus for mentioning my Shayla muichiro. I miss my son mui
Overall, this chapter was probably my favorite so far! I enjoyed the story thoroughly and I thought it was well written. It makes me so happy that they are expanding upon Mitsuris character and her relationship with Shinobu, and using that to give them both more depth. I love how mitsuri and shinobus characters complement each other’s writing. I could write an essay about it!
I love seeing the Hashira interact with each other and this duo is especially one of my favorites!
Loved this one.

Chapter 4
Well written short snippet about genya. I don’t fully understand sanemi and genya’s relationship but I know there is miscommunication so I’m giving sanemi some grace. I’ve always found their relationship interesting, so I can’t wait to see sanemi’s perspective better. But this was a really cute little story and the flash back was cute too. I loved seeing tanjiro at the end and I love when they expand upon the writing of the butterfly mansion girls. This one was short but great!

(One winged butterfly)
This is a novel from the book series Demon slayer, also know as kimetsu no yaiba.

This is about the characters Shinobu, Kanae and Himejima Gyoumei. Shinobu and Kanae loose their family as they have gotten eaten by a demon. Himejima a blind man working in the demon slayer corps saves them from the demon. Later Shinobu and Kanae follow Gyoumei home and cook dinner for him and ask to stay. He reply’s “no. go home and live happily” “we have no home. And how can we live happily when we know people are dying and loosing loved ones like us.” Shinobu says. Gyoumei sighs and brings them outside to a big rock where he says, “if you can move this rock, I will bring you to Master” Shinobu and Kanae say reluctantl, “how are we supposed to move such a big rock?” Gyoumei knows with such small bodies Kanae and Shinobu will not be able to move the rock, he leaves off to do his duties. When he returns he sees Kanae and Shinobu covered in dirt smiling happily as they lead him to the rock which he can feel has moved. Shinobu explains that she has made a machine to move the rock. Gyoumei, supriesed takes them to a master who soon teaches them both. Years later Kanae has been killed by a strong demon and Shinobu lives in despair, but she does not show it on her face and takes on how sister was, her smile, her kindness but one thing she could not take on was how she felt about demons. Kanae, who was very kind always had felt bad for the demons and killed them hoping they could be reborn into better people. Shinobu even works hard toward turning into a pillar. The highest class in the demon slayer corps, just like her sis was once.

I feel like this book was very interesting to me because it shows how the relationship of the sisters were so strong and loyal. This book has more than one short story and has multiple. (I think there was five)

I mentioned this in a prior review, but these sort of "side story" books are low-key almost by definition, since they can't contradict the main storyline. Therefore, none of the stories can be too extreme or result in something permanently changing for any of the major characters.

The stories are cute (mostly), and there's art from the original creator, but I don't know if I'd read this again. It's a bit like a (good) crossword puzzle: enjoyable, but less interesting once it's finished.

Stories include:
- Relationship between Himejima and the Kocho sisters, Shinobu and Kanae
- Uzui orders Zenitsu to "dig up a hot spring" (literally)
- Kanroji's "secret"
- Genya thinks about his brother Sanemi
- the other Hashira attempt to make Tomioka laugh
- Kimetsu Academy story about Tanjiro's horrible band

*Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review*

I enjoyed this short story collection more than the previous one, I felt like the stories were better and more engaging. This book focuses more on the hashira characters (and Genya), giving us glimpses of these characters we didn't really get in the series. Shinobu is my favorite, so I was delighted to get more of her and learn a bit more about her character and her connections to the other hashira. I had always felt that the group was a bit neglected in the series, given that most of the died without really getting much background about them, so I'd definitely recommend this book just based on the fact that you'll get more of these characters.

Demon Slayer: Kupu-kupu Bersayap Satu

I rate the first part 5/5 stars! I absolutely love the bond between the sisters. Kanae has such a warm and gentle presence and i wanna give Shinobu a hug. They’re so precious :(

As a someone who loves Tomioka, i love this part soooooo muchhhh ahhhshsh i miss my man ~~~

And ofc i will talk about Obanai & Mitsuri!! I love how Obanai cares about Mitsuri and notices the little things about her, it’s such a quiet kind of love but you can feel how much he treasures her, arghhhh comelnyaa part niii

Personally, i like the Malay translation because it feels natural, easy to read and dialog dia tak kaku. It makes the story easier to connect with.

If you haven’t read or watched Demon Slayer, you should give it a try. The story is beautiful and the characters are unforgettable!! Definitely worth the time!

A huge thank you to Edelweiss for the review copy of this book!

I am a big fan of the Demon Slayer series. So when I saw that there were a series of light novels, I had to get into them! I went ahead and read the first volume and felt like it wasn't as well written. Going into this volume, I worried about the quality of the writing and what kind of subjects it would cover. I was heavily impressed with this volume! These stories focused on some of the secondary characters, bringing more depth and personality to them. I really enjoyed these stories and had a hard time putting the book down. I am looking forward to reading the next volume, and potentially more!

kanae and shinobu hurt my heart so so much. i highlighted a lot but knowing gyomei as the eldest pillar and being able to see shinobu's development through his eyes was wonderful however my personal favorite story was the mitsuri one. obanai cares so so much for her and this additional light novel helps give more development that wasn't really given in the anime or the manga. I wish i didn't have to do homework to understand some stuff, but when the homework is this fun... I'll let it slide.

I know that the novelizations are over. I kind of wished we could have seen an additional nezuko novelization. her and the butterfly girls cameo were the sweetest.

A great collection of short stories in the Demon Slayer universe. Both the highlights featured Inosuke the latter with him in a band that is causing physical harm with their performance fits his outlandishly aggressive and competitive character perfectly.

The second chapter story is probably my favourite out of the collection and this is a light and breezy read for anime fans, it would suit a younger fan who is just branching into reading more prose but there’s still enough for adult fans to enjoy.

Going to check out the other light novels in this series now.
